This beautiful and friendly little pub is one of the few remaining genuine watering holes in the UK. It is staffed by the most delightful people and without exception, the locals are extremely warm and friendly. The setting is perfect and the traditional quirkiness of the pub is beyond charming.

The George is an outstanding village pub that is one of the hubs of this small, rural farming community. I have lived all over the UK, from Cornwall to Scotland, as well as Cyprus and Germany and the village residents and the pub are more welcoming and friendly than anywhere else I've lived. Local residents and visitors to the area support the George because they enjoy the people and the atmosphere. Perhaps it might not appeal to certain types of people who don't understand how a rural community functions and, if that is the case, then they should simply go else where.

One of the last remaining true country pubs that hasn’t been taken over by a brewery or large chain we are so lucky. Feel compelled to counterbalance some poor reviews by a previous post. Full disclosure : Yes you will bump into some friendly farmers it’s their local as farming is a large proportion of the employment in this area : I can guarantee they will welcome you with open arms. You will likely be greeted at the door when you enter the pub but that’s because it’s a small pub and the main door enters into the bar. You will be greeted with a smile and a welcome by the locals we don’t like ignoring people in this area it’s not our style. I can 100% refute the comment about locals not seeing well dressed ladies and can confirm that the floors of the royal George has been walked on in some incredible footwear jimmy choo , louboutin and fairfax and favour to name a few … but yes you will see the majority of people wearing comfy casual because people visit the George to relax. The beer and food is fantastic , the landlady and staff amazing and the locals friendly. If you’re looking for a soulless pub that has been stripped of all its character and has out-priced the locals then this is NOT the pub for you. May I suggest the weather spoons in the local town. If you’re looking for a characterful pub with friendly locals cracking beer great food and fantastic hosts look no further . You are likely to be brought into conversation by said locals and maybe a farmer or two but don’t worry they aren’t trying to ‘jump you’ they are just being friendly and genuinely interested in who you are .

The Royal George in Lingen is an unspoilt village pub with a great atmosphere. Jo and her team are always so accomodating and friendly. Whether you want a quiet pint or a meal with family or friends, it's just perfect. And it's a proper pub, it hasn't had the character ripped out of it. The regulars are locals who all love the area and come down to the pub for a chat. Every village should have a pub like The George. Good food, good selection of beers, spirits and wine and above all lovely people.

Total disclosure - I have known Jo, the landlady, for around 40 years and have hosted a quiz or two at the pub. Jo has worked very hard to make a success of The Royal George at a time when we all know running a rural pub is hardly a short cut to making a million. In my experience, 'The George' is everything you could want from a local village pub - good atmosphere and a few characters around the bar. I have eaten there in the past and the food has always been very good - even when there were 18 of us for a Christmas meal and so the pressure would have been on. Jo and her staff - particularly Nyree and Grace, but there are doubtless others - always make you feel welcome. I have read some of the reviews of The George on here and wonder if those people were at the same pub as I didn't recognise the George at all in some of those comments. Yes, we are all entitled to an opinion - that is kind of the point of TripAdvisor - but some of those comments seem very much over the top. Oh, and the 'smelly farmers' referred to in one review are the very people who help keep rural pubs going... As for those reviewers who say they got the silent treatment - well, did you try to make conversation? I know those 'smelly farmers' and the majority of them like nothing more than a chat and are generally very welcoming. They don't turn their noses up at visitors - even if some of those visitors clearly feel they need to hold theirs.... :-)

We’d booked previously, but they told us they weren’t expecting us. They acted as if they were doing us a great favour by “fitting us in”. The pub was half empty. We looked at the food the other tables were eating. Absolutely horrid. We decided as a group that there was no point eating here. We had a couple of drinks but a large group of men at the bar stared at us in silence all the way through. Really weird vibes. Places like this should be shut down. Gross!!!!!

The very first thing that we noticed was the fantastic garden. Huge and well kept. Lots of lovely little features. If we had stayed for just a drink in the sun it would have been fine. Unfortunately we made the mistake of ordering food. Our meals were frankly disgusting. Bland, over-cooked, tragically amateurish pub food. Personally I did not like the atmosphere inside. There were many local men at the bar just staring. Perhaps they have never seen a well-dressed woman? All too provincial for me. No thanks. Please try better we are in the year 2024.

Full disclosure: we live in the area & I have been known to put in a shift behind the bar. However, a recent - totally unfair- poor review has so incensed me, I’m here to redress the balance. Being a retired/ semi-retired couple, we no longer eat out as often as we would like, but Jo’s food is always superb. Her steaks are melt-in-the-mouth delicious and the only complaint I’ve ever heard - or made myself - about her Sunday roast is that there’s too much food! As other reviewers have noted, the bar prices are very reasonable. It is advisable to book in advance. The Royal George is a gem of a village pub, the like of which is becoming all too rare.

My wife and I had an interesting lunch here. We’ve scored this pub a solid 3 as the drinks were fantastic and very reasonably priced, but our meals were awful. We’ve never been served such dry meat in our lives, it was like a shabby school dinner. However we really enjoyed ourselves mainly due to the lady serving us. We’ve forgotten her name but she was so fun and friendly and had us in stitches. We adored the local drinkers we met at the bar. Real rustic folk with good old fashioned opinions about what’s going on in this country. Not for the woke or politically correct! Archi and Hattie

This is your perfect country pub, which if we don’t watch out will soon disappear. It serves excellent pub grub, has a great selection of drinks , and at times is full of local characters, none of whom is as described in a recent review. Winter is coming, wood burner will be lit, nowhere nicer to spend an hour or two👍👍

Lovely family pub , with great food a huge range of drinks and entertainment arranged on tap. Locals are in fact incredibly friendly, we regularly visit with our two nine years olds and I have never been concerned about them over hearing racist or homophobic content. In fact I would suggest a previous reviewers negative comments on a number of local pubs suggest he doesn’t particularly like country folk especially North Herefordians !

This is a lovely friendly village pub, the landlady is young, enthusiastic and imaginative with ideas to keep the experience fresh and interesting. Staff are lovely and the locals are friendly and happy to chat to strangers, drawing them in to the conversation. The previous review accusing it of being racist and homophobic is surprising, I have never found it so. Interestingly the person who left that review has levelled the same accusations at other pubs and one wonders whether perhaps they are somewhat lacking in empathy themselves.

To start with, 2 excellent beers. The HPA was very fresh and was kept at a good temperature. There were 6 of us ranging from 9 to 91 years old. The menu catered for all of us. The food was excellent, with my steak being cooked rare exactly as I like it. The other meals were just as good, with the steak pie being particularly hearty. The service matched the food, excellent as well. We will return!

Was recommended by people, arrived on a quiet Bank Holiday so no queue to worry about, ordered a pint of bitter ugh, 1st mistake, surly barman with no people skills poured an insipid glass of something. Ordered burger for myself and fish and chips for my wife, what turned up was meal that even aunt Bessie would have been embarrassed to serve up. Cod was grey and batter overdone, so much oil floating around thought Torrey Canyon was back!! No welcome just a cold acceptance and all for £27 Best to give this a miss, extremely overpriced for quality.

Lorna does a fantastic job with the best lasagna in Shropshire (I order it just about every time). Everyone makes you feel welcome, from the staff to the locals that are there enjoying a pint and a yarn. Make the effort to get there, you won't be disappointed.

On our first night of our holiday, we headed over to this pub on recommendation. We were not disappointed, lovely quiet country pub, still comfortably frequented by the locals, no blaring music, excellent beers and honest to good, reasonably priced food. Pleasant bar staff. We visited on two occasions, and it was brilliant on both counts. If you want to step back in time, and enjoy good food, beer and atmosphere, don’t miss this pub.
