Great location in a quiet village with garden, traditional pub food of high quality and reasonable price in an atmospheric old inn. Friendly staff. We've been a number of times over the years and it is our favourite. Only one bad experience when it was leased over a year or so ago.

We decided on the spur of the moment to visit The Rose because it’s set in a beautiful village and we hadn’t visited in some time . They were friendly when we phoned for a Sat evening table and welcomed us when we arrived. It was 6.15pm and Parking was easy and most of the customers were in the beer garden but we decided with some others to eat inside. It became quite full but the staff remained happy and helpful. It’s a proper country pub of the old school I’d say, especially for kent with hops hanging and wooden floors , people with dogs and children welcomed too. The food was excellent pub food and all home made, down to the tartar sauce. Lovely staff and landlady in that day.

The Rose Inn is the perfect English country pub. Delicious food, a great range of drinks, a gorgeous pub garden and traditional Kentish hops decorating the inside. Everyone who works there is so kind and helpful, and the pub really has a lovely, welcoming feel to it. Wickhambreaux is really lucky to have this amazing spot!

Lovely warm friendly welcome. Asked if we would like a drink at the bar first. I like this. Nice to take in the pubs warm atmosphere before being seated to eat. It had a lovely cosy traditional Kentish Pub feel. Lovely smiley ladies waited on our table. We were 2 couples for Valentines. We did all pick from the Valentines menu but there was plenty of other options and specials as well. All our food was fantastic. 3 Monkfish and chorizo skewers, 1 broccoli and stilton soup. The sharing Cote de Boeuf was a huge platter with all the trimmings. Looked amazing and tasted it too. The chicken and my beetroot wellington were better than I expected. The Rhubarb posset with ginger biscuits was so delicious. Would go back just for that!! We noticed the pints were a very reasonable price. Will definitely be returning. Cannot recommend enough. Please support this super pub before they all disappear. Thanks for a lovely evening, not rushed in any way. Great staff. Fantastic Food

Nice little pub lovely friendly atmosphere unfortunately the food doesn’t match its feeling. Roast Dinner is limited choice and bland in taste also presentation poor. The meat had little flavour and cabbage (white variety)had no seasoning or butter chopped into it. Carrots looked dried up cauliflower cheese hard and not baked in the oven just thin sauce, lots of big hard lumps in swede and watery gravy. Not cheap at £21 so all in all not a good experience such a shame as it’s fairly local to us.

Good start we arrived and our table was ready and we had a warm welcome from a couple of the staff. Unfortunately I think this restaurant maybe suffering something that so many restaurants are in this country and that is unfortunately having to hire “young”, and this is not ageist, inexperienced staff. One of the most important things when serving people is to just be friendly and polite- which was very visible from the full time staff- but unfortunately the less experienced staff this wasn’t. To give an explanation when we were finishing our mains one of the table was still eating, and the plates started to be cleared when we asked to wait until we are all finished it became very uncomfortable. Cannot understand the reason for that as we asked politely and somebody was eating still. We also felt like we got there between first service and second service maybe? Our plates seemed to be sparser than the plates we saw before and the plates we saw after. Portions weren’t huge. The thing that got us all going more than anything was the cheese sauce on the cauliflower didn’t cover the cauliflower and it was very visible that the cauliflower had that brown tinge to the florets. Starters were nice but small, and desserts were nice. Which is what brings it up to average, as you will note from my many many restaurant reviews I am quite lax to give poor reviews and try to find positives. We only went to The Rose as the restaurant where we were going, which is the closest restaurant to The Rose, could only fit us in at a later time and we wanted to lunch early, but we do wish we had waited. Pluses- experienced staff all seemed lovely. Starters were nice. Nice pub atmosphere. Allow dogs. One of the ladies noted we had waited a long time for our food and offered us tea/coffee on the house but to be honest we hadn’t noticed the wait as with our disappointment with some of the service and the quality of the roast dinner. Negatives- inexperienced staff who should be politer. Roast dinner. Portion size. Two pork belly ordered only one got crackling and that was when they asked as it had been left off and we had been told the dish came with crackling. Lack of potatoes and when we asked for more we were told it would be 25minute wait??

This was a super Sunday pub lunch. Welcoming atmosphere, log fire, dog friendly, great service (very understanding despite us being half an hour late due to flooding encountered on our pre-pub walk). Very good starters of whitebait, prawn cocktail and BBQ ribs, and big portions of roast beef and pork belly. Excellent desserts such as forest fruits crumble. Only point for improvement - more than one cask ale on offer would be good.

Denise gave us a warm welcome, the pub on Google is mistakenly marked as permanently closed - it is certainly open. We had a pint of beer and cider respectively both very well kept. The menu looks fantastic, we shall be returning to sample the food. The location is completely unique, on the green in Wickhambreaux beside Wickhambreaux Court which features in Michael Powell’s war-time classic ‘A Canterbury Tale’. The pub itself has landlords dating back to 1718 and the site itself has had a dwelling on it from the 14th century. What more do you need to know - visit yourself for a truly English experience with a friendly welcome. The church, just a few steps away, is worth a visit too, dating from the 14th century it boasts a famous window of major Art Nouveau significance depicting the Annunciation with many angels on a field of lilies.

We visited today, thinking it had shut down. Not at all! It’s had a change from its previous tenants and is welcoming one and all. The location is simply breathtaking and the welcome warm. If you want the absolutely perfect ancient English village, complete with beautiful church, river, mill and grand houses full of rich history, then you should look no further than Wickhambreaux. Amazingly, it doesn’t have a million instagrammers and tiktokers spoiling the views, so visit, have a pint, sample the food, the views and meet the lovely owner. There’s even a stream nearby reputed to be fought over by a saint and two Norse gods. Yes, really. Picture perfect? Oh yes.

Looks like a nice place and started well. The starters were nice. One main looked like a dogs dinner but tasted ok while the other looked ok but was sadly inedible. We sent it back uneaten (I never send food back and hate complaining in restaurants). We were then ignored until we asked for the bill. When we asked why we were expected to pay full price for food that wasn't eaten we were told "because other people hadn't complained". All of this was with the very young server while the shift supervisor avoided us (not easily done in such a small place so props for that). We paid the full bill and left without further comment as we didn't want to ruin other patrons experience. The female shift supervisor did manage to shout "goodbye" to us over her shoulder with her back to us which made us feel great.

A nice welcome in a lovely Kent village setting. Sunday lunch - overall opinion was it was found wanting. Sunday roast for our family is deemed to be generous with fresh vegetables and big fat roasties. This wasn’t. Limited menu generally isn’t an issue but strangely we asked if one of our party could have just ice cream for dessert, to be told no as it was all portioned out for the sticky toffee pudding. However, the one dessert our party had - they enjoyed.

Maybe we were unlucky. The tiny plates thing is just silly as we ended up with quite substantial portions of, sadly, rather horrid food., crammed onto plates which were too small. The ribs were in a sauce that tasted of Bisto gravy granules and worcs sauce and didn’t seem very fresh either. Honestly unpleasant to recall, even over a month ago. Other dish was scallops with morcilla so that bullied all other flavours from the plate. We didn’t dare try anything else.

Service was excellent and friendly. We did a mixture of dishes having eaten too well at breakfast. I had fish soup which was very intensely flavored and I loved it (wife didn't). The intensity really needed some bread with it but at 5 quid extra I wasn't bothering. We tried the fish terrine too, but it was overwhelmed by the soup so that combination didn't work. Wife had a shallot and goat cheese thing which she liked very much, I didn't. Had Kent blue cheese and fennel pickle for pud. Very nice indeed. Wife had blood orange meringue. The flavour of the pod was great but the base less successful. The meringue was mushy then blow torched. Modern technique I suppose, but just shove it in the oven, it works much better. This was so much more interesting than the standard pub gate that seems to be the norm round here, but I can't see their pricing structure serving then well. Beer was local and first rate.

I wanted to complain whilst there but did not want to embarrass our friends. There was another table that complained whilst we were there refusing to pay the bill. The roast was served on child size plates. Te beef was too tough it was difficult to chew. It was served with cabbage and roast potatoes not other vegetables or choice of potatoes. one small bowl for 3 people to share. The soup (celeriac was tasteless and by the time we got it, it was cold). Service was good but overall a very disappointing meal.

Really enjoyed our experience, with friendly attentive staff and good food. There were good social distancing signs and plenty of measures in place to keep us safe. The staff were very welcoming when we arrived and explained how sitting inside or out worked for either just drinking or drinking and eating. We decided to sit outside in the garden as it was a sunny day and we ordered our food from the fire engine...very novel!. It was a family gathering with adults and children and we found a good choice of food at very reasonable prices. We all enjoyed our lunch very much and the atmosphere in the garden was very jovial. We will definitely visit again! Thank you.

id past this place so many times and it always looked quaint & had really wanted to visit. we went on a really hot day and sat outside so i never got to actually see what the pub was like. the garden was really busy with families and we made the mistake of sitting at the back under a tree full of wasps. the menu looked really good and was good value due to the eat out scheme. portions were big but the dish i chose ,the pork wasnt that flavoured and the potatoes to spicy for me to eat. one of our party ordered the burger and that looked the nicest. It seemed like lots of locals finishing work go there and has the potential to be rowdy. The man working the van was really friendly as were the servers but for us it wasnt quite the quiet country lunch that we had expected it to be.

We went as a family group of all ages and were made to feel very welcome, naturally we had many different dishes and all agreed that everyone’s meal was delicious, with absolutely no complaints - even from fussy teenagers! The waitress/bar service was great, very attentive without being in the least intrusive. We would recommend the Rose Inn to anybody who wants to eat very well in a comfortable and friendly environment and we will definitely be back as soon as it is possible.

Now I’m not one to usually post negatively on these sites as am a big believer in trying to promote local business, but when the proprietor of said business is just plain rude, I think it needs to be said in order to make people aware of what they are walking into so they think twice about their choice and possibly have the opportunity to spend their hard earned money at somewhere more welcoming and deserving. To cut to the chase, at a time where we are all being publicly asked to be more considerate of one another and more tolerant, the actions of the proprietor when asked if my 7 year old daughter could use the toilet was downright rude and condescending. I don’t expect a door to be slammed in my face for asking such an innocent question, especially when I had advised that I’d be returning at 12 to order food (it was appx 11.40 and admittedly they weren’t welcoming custom at that point), but the village itself isn’t blessed with public conveniences (from what we could see - we aren’t local) so thought given the fact we were returning for food, it wouldn’t be an issue. Also, given that I haven’t yet mastered the art of telepathy, I wouldn’t know that they were tidying up after a private function. However, the tirade in which he delivered this information to me made me feel extremely belittled and also upset my daughter as she didn’t understand why I had been shouted at.Following the epidemic and the unfortunate need to close restaurants and pubs, the recent re-opening has come with a big message to try and support these businesses by eating out more. You’d have thought that the business would be more welcoming, given the age old saying “you only get one chance to make a good first impression”, however this is obviously lost on this person and from reading the comments I can see I’m not the only one to have faced such a tirade.I’ll not be going back. Nor will my family. Nor will my friends. In a world where you can be anything, be kind. This man chooses not to be and is undeserving of your custom.

We had a voucher for carvery at £6. We had never been before. When we arrived we felt a little lost as did not know the procedure. However once we found someone to help we relaxed and went to the bar to order the carvery. We could have ordered at the table, by using a barcode, but as we are in our seventies, and not too computer savvy we went to the bar. The carvery was lovely. Beef was cooked as i like it, although as it was a new joint they brought out, it was a little fatty. The turkey was delicious. We were very happy as there were brussel sprouts and swede mix which we love. We really enjoyed the meal. The only thing we left on our plates was the beef fat. Otherwise we ate everything else on our plate.

I visit Herne bay about five times a year. I used to go playing the Amusements in neptunes and used to eat lovely fish and chips there. They used to be free because I played the machines. When it closed I tried deans place as the chef worked there after neptunes closed. The fish was still nice.. Fast forward years and the fish portions seemed smaller. The last few times including this one the fish batter is softer. Fish was smaller and not as tasty This time granddaughter saveloy was hard. Not like a saveloy taste imo. My fish was small slimy texture and soft batter insipid flavour and chips looked anaemically white. Nothing special to taste . . My wife's wasn't too bad but at nearly fifteen pounds each i won't ever go again.
