The Rose & Crown in Chelmsford

Although we know this area extremely well, and we’ve been to area due to family connections occasions over the years we had never tried the Rose and Crown. On this visit to the area we were staying at a bit of an odd B&B so wanted to get out to eat and decided to give the Rose & Crown a test drive! It does have a car park which is quite limited (although we did find a spot!) but you are able to park on the road if it’s full. As we entered the Rose and Crown it immediately took you back in time to what an old English pub was like back in the day. It seemed time locked in the days of yore. We found it very friendly and had booked a table so we were able to get seated without any difficulty. Please be aware that on a Sunday last orders for food is at about 6:45 pm, and we made it just in time! The size of the portions are a bit like eating in Texas! I ordered a Prawn Cocktail to start which was huge but extremely good! The Roasts are equally generous. They have live Music on from time to time which I’m sure gets the place rocking! We really enjoyed it it and would heartily recommend.

Great food and service here once again. Not too far away from home so will definitely go again soon..

Great food all served promptly and with good humour to our rambler group of 17. Always a pleasure to break our walk here.

Lovely food, lovely service! Really rate this pub. Homemade food, good choice of options, lots of more imaginative things than just burgers and pies! Love that they do seasonal options like game.

What a lovely pub. Staff very welcoming and friendly service, nothing too much trouble. Both had homemade lasagna with side order of chips, which was very delicious and adequate portions. Toilets are clean. Great walks around the area. Will be returning soon.

My mum and I arrived to a very warm welcome on a rainy Tuesday lunchtime. The lady behind the bar who greeted us couldn't have been more friendly and we were given a table right next to the very inviting log burner. Our food was excellent, portion sizes just right, and we felt so at home that we were reluctant to leave. All staff were very friendly and helpful and the music was very pleasant and not too loud, like many places can be nowadays. This was our second visit and certainly won't be our last. A little gem. Thank you.

We hadn’t been before but have been twice in one weekend. The dinner menu is full of classic pub food, all beautiful presented. We had the pork belly from the main menu and the Skate wing from the specials menu. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, with some amazing flavours. The dessert menu is varied with something for everyone. My jam sponge and cream was light and fluffy and exactly the right size, so I want over full or still hungry. We enjoyed it so much, we returned to try the breakfast menu. It didn’t disappoint. The staff are all friendly and welcoming, We will certainly return.

A fantastic night ,meeting up with friends,superb meal and listening to 'Oink' .The food menu is so extensive,and all served beautifully and very ample portions....highly recommend.

First visit to the Rose and Crown and will definitely be returning again soon. Our food was delicious and the service was excellent.

Decided to stop off at our nearby pub, where previously we have had fantastic service, meals & a warm welcome. After spending a day by the sea we thought we would finish it off with a nice meal & where better than the Rose & Crown. At 7pm we purchased drinks and asked for the menu. The bartender said I’m really sorry, but the kitchen staff has said we’re not taking any more orders this evening, because we’re very busy. We were very disappointed, but accepted this. We took our drinks outside to decide where we could go. Over 30 minutes later we decided to get another drink, whilst at the bar to my amazement people were ordering food. I queried this with the Bartender who said the kitchen staff had told him that there was no more food orders to be taken at all. I said it was very unfair as we had been refused earlier, so why was it now that you are taking orders. His reply was that he was only following orders from the kitchen. With that we changed our mind about another drink and moved on.

I went here for my birthday with family and friends. The food was delicious and wine was good. The staff were attentive but not overly. Would thoroughly recommend this pub. Lucky residents of Great Waltham to have such a great pub on their door step.

We had a lovely lunch here, really enjoyed Cottage Pie and Lamb Pie. Was absolutely delicious. Will highly recommend.

An excellent late Sunday lunch at this pub. We were seated in The Snug (only for ourselves). Good choice of food, well cooked and served by friendly staff.

My friends and I came for breakfast today and absolutely loved it! The food was incredible, one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had out. Only disappointment was there was no milk alternative offered. However that wouldn’t stop me coming back over and over. All 5 of us throughly enjoyed our breakfast. The atmosphere in the pub is lovely and the staff are so friendly. We’ve been in the past for lunch which was also delightful. I will be back again! Thanks for a wonderful start to the day.

A Double Birthday lunch! 8 of us in total. Service excellent. Food terrific and plenty of it. Very surprised that this Pub and its Restaurant facilities have not been reviewed before. The Rose & Crown is now on my must re-visit list!
