i was sat outside in the garden for barbeque and there was not a good selection, the chips were raw and the burgers were cold. serice was okay but when we told them about the food they never returned.the atmosphere was okay there was music and a kids area. and was not aloid to park in the parking spot

I had hight expectations as I’d been planning to come here a long time; they were exceeded by the friendliness of staff, the quality of food and the lovely establishment. I am now engineering road trips so I can return for lunch!

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Essex. Food and drinks are always consistently of a very high standard, the service is impeccable and the surroundings are lovely.

It's increasing rare to find high-quality food, good value, and excellent service all in one place, but the Galvin Green Man achieves all of this in pleasant surroundings. Outstanding. This represents a new standard for this class of restaurant, one which others we have to match if they are going to survive.

The food here is absolutely fantastic. Very nicely presented, creative and full of flavour. The service was extremely slow, we waited 20 min to make an order and waited for drinks around 45min. Had to ask for water multiple times as no waiter would offer it. It was my husbands birthday which was flagged at the reservation when I made it and I was hoping that like any other restaurant would offer some sort of treat for the occasion but unfortunate nothing was provided. Why ask about occasion if you’re not doing anything about it. The food was amazing but the experience overall was very average if not disappointing.

Lovely meal, lovely setting. Only gripe was the red wine, ordered the recommended red wine, not cheap arrived in a labelless bottle, which appeared to come from a tap. Had much better wine for far less money.

The service here was top notch, very attentive staff. The food was superb and especially the roast potatoes, which were cooked to perfection.

Really nice place, great surroundings, but unfortunately let down by slow / poor service and average food. Wrong starters were served, followed by a very salty haddock dish and a pork dish which was mainly unrendered fat.

I was looking forward to seeing what they'd done with the place as I used to live in Howe St years ago. Disappointed was the general census. Of myself, my husband and my father. Pretentious was another. Range Rovers, Mercedes, Teslas and Porches dawned the parking lot. And yet zero class was found. My father nearly went over as we entered the main bar as there were two dogs on leashes wandering. In which he got tangled in. Then when we stepped towards the bar, we were greeted with a friendly, quiet, timid young lady. Who didn't seem to know anything about the beverages we asked about. Once the confusion died down she said she'd find us with our drinks. To which I said we'd be outside. Lovely garden and benches set up. It's a beautiful area, it would be hard to mess that part up. After 10 minutes in the hot sun, my husband went to hunt down our drinks. To which he was informed they were waiting on a tray at the end of the bar. We didn't stay long Needless to say. Strange obnoxious atmosphere. Ill informed staff and Towie wannabes as far as the eye can see. Such a shame. Could of been lovely.

Best pub garden in Essex, food is great, highly recommend their Sunday roast beef.

Booked dinner for a Friday and had a lovely, friendly welcome on arrival. As we arrived a little earlier than we had booked we both opted for a pre-dinner cocktail in the bar. As the cocktail list did not have one we fancied I asked the barman if he could make us up a Manhattan (always dubious about asking for a cocktail not listed) and he duly served up a perfect mix. We were sat on a very nice table and asked if we wanted water...which we ordered (tap). The menu was quite limited but there were some very interesting options. A very pleasant waitress took our order and we both selected as a starter an imaginative lobster bisque. Only issue was that the waitress misheard (the restaurant was a little noisy) and though my wife received the dish ordered, mine was incorrect. This is where this restaurant excelled. Firstly an immediate apology was made, both dishes were removed and we were informed it would be a short wait for them to be cooked and would we like some complementary bread and olives whilst we wait. Very professional! Both starter dishes were fantastic with some quite amazing flavours. For mains, my wife had chicken with wild mushrooms, which again had flavours just exploding in the mouth and I had hake with Jersey Royals and tomatoes. In truth, the hake flavour/taste was for my taste a little underwhelming though cooked very well. We both shared a cherry clofoutis and cherry cream for dessert, which we felt was a little to sweet and over powered the cherry taste. We each had a glass of Chardonnay and a pinot noir...both excellent. Overall, we had a superb meal, served by some very friendly, professional staff. We were not rushed between courses and there was no constant visits to the table by the waiting staff to try and build up the drinks bill....which has become a major irritation to restaurant diners everywhere over the past couple of years. Roast Beef very fatty and not to usual standard.

The food was fine if a bit designer style. It was expensive for what it was. Please let them know carefully about allergies as it does limit your choice on an already limited menu. We asked if a particular Rośe was sweet or dry- it turned out very dry when we were informed it was medium dry. A bit of an upmarket Bistro pub/restaurant- we will not be going again. But, the waiteress was somewhat helpful.

Totally overpriced ,couldn't find the waitress ! We went to the restaurant for my daughters bday agreed on the phone they would sort something and at the end of the meal walked over with a desert we had already bought and said happy bday lol WHAT A LET DOWN FOR BOTH HER AND THE OTHER 3 CHILDREN.

Service was a bit poor. Slow. Food came out before any cutlery, no napkins However, food was amazing.

Very expensive for what you get. My gammon steak was nothing more than a good rasher with an over cooked egg and chips and the gammon was tough. Very disappointed.

Sorry to say food was disappointing, mediocre and tepid. The serving staff were very sweet and polite but the actual service was dreadful.

The roast was fine but nothing to write home about. Beef was cut so thin, the potatoes looked burnt but were actually fine. My custard tart pudding was burnt so I sent it back and the second one came or burnt as well. As if the person using the blow torch didn't know how to caramelise the sugar. They took this off the bill for us. The roast needs the additional sides to make it a full roast so you are looking at +£30 per person for the roast. Expect total bill to be +£50 pp Atmosphere and service is great but they did bring out our roast when we still had bread on the table. I saw them do this to another table shortly before us who had first course dishes still out. They should definitely wait to do mains away as it felt rushed and the roast was already plated before we ordered. If we go back we would go for the pub menu.

We have visited Galvin Greenman several times, enjoying both its restaurant and pub. Each visit has been a delightful experience. We particularly appreciate the option of a casual dinner in the pub, where we can bring our dog along. The food is consistently excellent, the service top-notch, and the prices quite affordable. Despite the 40-minute drive, we always find it worthwhile to make the trip. Even Max, my dog, loves the gaff and enjoys watching everyone.

From the minute we arrived until we paid the bill & left the customer service was 2nd to none. Made us feel very welcome & special throughout the meal & they dealt with a minor issue very professionally & politely. We had starters of cauliflower soup & whipped goats cheese, followed by nut roast Sunday lunch and finished off with chocolate cheesecake & custard tart. Only remembered to do pictures at the end but still highly recommend regardless. Great selection of non alcoholic drinks too which was a big plus for my husband. We will be back for sure and thanks for making our visit so nice. Jane

First time we have visited for a while and we were not disappointed. My wife has several foods that set off her IBS. The staff completely understood and walked through how they could prepare her meal - first restaurant in a long time that gave her multiple options, first restaurant where she was able to have a three course meal. The food was lovely for both of us - cooked perfectly and great tasting. Special shout out for the rhubarb sorbet. Oh and they serve a very decent pint - they know how to look after real ale! Can’t speak highly enough of the friendly staff - made our day. Highly recommended and we will definitely revisit.

I have been here several times and the service is always excellent. However the menu is not that big for non meat eaters, and if you are pescatarian, a choice of about 2 dishes, possibly 3 from memory. They are not big portions for the money they charge other than the fish and chips, but I can get that from the chippy. The quality of the food is very good, so no issues there, but as said the choice is limited for me.

Good food but terrible service. The courses didn’t arrive at our table at the same time, there was no attention to detail, placing plates on top of napkins and menus, we also felt it was a rushed service when taking orders and very slow drinks service to our table. The wait staff were not uniform like other restaurants you might dine in at these prices. It’s not just about the food when you’re paying this sort of money for food, it’s the experience, which wasn’t great. We were disappointed with our server, we noted a bit of attitude, and to top off the pretty dismal performance of the food and drinks service the ladies toilets were also unclean. This was our second time but definitely the last. There are far nicer restaurants in Essex for these prices.

We are fairly regular users of GGM and had a really excellent lunch with some very well prepared tasty food however I should point out that the prices have increased significantly in recent times. Roughly £75/head for lunch is now London prices and will certainly restrict the number of times we go. The wine we would have previously paid £30/bottle is now £47/bottle and main courses up to £47/course is too high for a country pub experience.

Food was good and reason for the 4 star rating. Service is not commensurate with the good quality food. - It took the bar attendant 20 minutes to prepare 6 drinks on arrival. - Once seated, we waited 35 minutes for our drinks order to be served. - When the wine arrived it was not what was ordered. - Our food arrived before the drinks including wine. - When the food arrived, the steaks were not as ordered or had been placed in the wrong position. It was easier for us to change our own plates. - When we booked our table online it asked for any special occasion. We were also asked when we were taken to our table. On both occasions we said it was for a birthday, but there was nothing done to help celebrate the occasion ie complimentary dessert. - As a result , we said that we would not pay the Service charge which was £54 (£9 each for a table of 6). Surprisingly we were not asked why, or if there was a problem. We would have been happy to give constructive and useful feedback, to help overcome the issues we experienced for other customers. Shame because it’s the little things that make a big difference and with the food and venue being very good, service was not on the same level.

Went for Sunday lunch. Can say nothing bad about the place. The lady at reception was super friendly and efficient. Serving staff attentive but not overly so. Food was lovely, very tasty and hot. We will return, and I thoroughly recommend it.

Visited for my parents’ anniversary and was very impressed with the menu and service. A lovely building, nice and light and airy and the service was excellent throughout. Greeted on arrival and the staff were very attentive to various dietary requirements. Lovely food and would definitely come back again.

Tasting Menu (ends 29/3) is excellent value but more importantly well constructed and full of wonderful taste profiles. Can wholly recommend the Salt Baked Celeriac Soup and Brie de Meaux with honey. Service is professional, attentive but friendly and unobtrusive which is the best way imo. Will be back for the A la Carte and Bib Gourmand menus.

Amazing time at Galvin green man! We went for the Sunday set menu and started with the famous scotch egg which was unbelievable. The roast beef was delicious with really tasty roast potatoes! Such a lovely venue with a great vibe, would highly recommend for a great meal out

The food was outstanding, we had one of the private dining rooms upstairs, service was everything we could if wished for

Sat in Pub side for an early evening meal. Was told it was table service yet had to wait a really long time for drinks to be ordered and then left with finished plates on table for 40mins, despite me getting up to get the desert menus as signal to the 3 staff behind the bar. Left with a £100 bill and don’t bother spending on deserts. Was told they took service charge off the receipt which was appropriate as the service was non-existent. Really disappointed as I don’t think the Galvin management would be happy with that either.

Great local pub. Staff incredibly attentive at keeping the fire topped up. Felt lovely and relaxed. Food here is also A+

Galvin quality right here in Chelmsford! Just a fantastic place, as it’s top quality food and service but in a relaxed setting (and not paying London prices). The burger is immense!

The one saving grace of our meal was the great, attentive service. The food was sadly average and very overpriced. There were only two small slices of beef with the roast and were largely fat, though at least they tasted nice. Decent roast potatoes but the rest of the tasteless veg left a lot to be desired. Tried a couple different wines, all of which were low quality. Very disappointing particularly given the price point. I wouldn’t recommend a visit.

Really cracking place, it does its thing (which is food and drink!) really well and has the potential to be next-level in the summer, with a big garden and a veranda….. does a pub quiz too!

Celebrated our 20 year wedding anniversary with a lovely meal here. We’ve been to Galvin Green Man a few times and it never disappoints, the setting, the food and the service is all first class. Chloe our waitress helped me decide over the main course as the choices were so good I couldn’t make my mind up! Chloe was a little star throughout the meal, very good at filling the wine glass up!! Food - Starters: Beetroot cured salmon with baby beets & lobster & salt cod in a lobster bisque. Mains: both had the ribeye (we are booking to go back to try the duck and fish!). Deserts: Pear crumble with nutmeg custard & BBQ pineapple and coconut baked Alaska - they made the desert super cute by adding chocolate “Happy Anniversary” messages. We drank a lovely Sauvignon Blanc with our meal and had a gin in the bar whilst waiting for the taxi. Can not wait to book again!

Factual review: Arrived for a 50th birthday meal (travelled for an hour with a family of x 6). As soon as we sat down the waitress (Emily) made a very harsh statement to one of our diners (she is a mature 23-year old). She said in a very loud voice ''I can see you had one drink in the bar, so I will not be serving you a drink at the table as we have a very strict 'Challenge 25 policy''. We could not believe it! What an horrendous start to what have should have been a great dining experience. Not being personal here but her voice, tone and volume sounded like she was a children's entertainer! Something out of a Catherine Tate comedy sketch! I understand your policy, but you need to manage this better. If we had just rocked up at the bar ordering shots etc. then I totally understand. But when there is a mature family dining at a table, you do not manage the policy in this way! 'Challenge' is a very strong word and you do not apply that loudly to a majority mature table of diners in full view of everyone. Fair play she did come back and apologize after I complained, but she done this again very loudly gaining much attention from other diners that just added to the embarrassment. Food: Focaccia was not Focaccia. Even my 12-year old daughter knew this. It was just thickly sliced white bread, slightly stale! The Mozzarella dish was bland. Low quality with some chopped up blood orange made to look a little fancy - that's it. My Gin cured Salmon was hilariously small. 3 tiny slithers that did not really taste of anything other than Salmon. I could have put all these pieces on a fork and eaten in one go if had wanted. Catch of the day was Cod!! Out of all the fish! It was just 'ok'. Sauce was watery and you simply could not cut through the baby leeks! We had to rush dessert as despite having a 2-hour slot, service was slow and late. The photos of the food on the website (appreciate they are representations), but they did not match what style and substance is generally being served, that we experienced and witnessed. Totally ruined what should have been a great 50th dining experience. We made the effort and investment to complete a 2-hour round trip via an expensive taxi. We wish you had put as much effort in as we had. Yes we received a free bottle of Prosecco and no service charge. I appreciate that, but if this was just another meal for us, great. But this was a very special birthday meal. We are regular diners so we know what to expect. Totally ruined the birthday experience.

Slightly underwhelmed. We were expecting a cosy pub atmosphere but the dining takes place in a modern refectory style structure a bit like an upmarket motorway cafe.

Good food, service and atmosphere. Table spacing was ideal unlike some restaurants. Cutlery and glasses on tables were also very clean. All staff were polite and attentive. Well done everyone!

We have been three times, and each visit is a good as the last, staff are friendly and professional. The food is the best your taste in Essex and the place is fantastic. Me and my husband said we make this a treat once a month.

WOW!! Amazing evening for mine and my friends birthday’s. Fantastic experience from start to finish. Even though the restaurant was very busy, we were served quickly, food came out fast, the service was brilliant and the food incredible. Will definitely return.

The food and service are always absolutely excellent. All the staff are very happy friendly helpful. Absolutely a great team! The menus which seem to change very frequently are interesting and with ample choice. My only reservation is the noise level. In the main restaurant noise rattling around can be unbearable. It’s all hard surfaces so nothing to absorb the sounds of the shouty people. Empty vessels etc. The front of the building which is the old pub is much calmer and always my preference but not bookable. That said on my last visit a very loud group came in and ultimately I asked them to quieten down as they were all shouting at once. More empty vessels! In fairness they moderated the volume. All that said I always look forward to going back.

Absolutely lovely restaurant. Went yesterday for my partner's 25th birthday, and we had a wonderful time. Staff was very friendly, food was delicious and the atmosphere was delightful. As a hospitality worker herself, she couldn't find a fault, and only had high remarks! We highly recommend and will be coming again 😊

Perfect service and food was excellent

We had a fabulous time. The food and service were superb. We were a family of 11 with 2 dogs and had one of the private dining rooms. It was perfect and our waitress was amazing. We’ll definitely be back!
