Just had a lovely afternoon at the GGM - lovely food and service .

Excellent place to go for food or just even a drink at the bar. Service was very good and there is even a big outside beer garden

Excellent food in a wonderful setting. Maybe a tad too hot inside, but everything else was faultless.

You probably don't need me to tell you how good Galvin Green Man is. You may have already heard. What you may not know is that you can take small dogs into the front Pub section and get a smaller menu, but still a satisfying selection of classic dishes prepared by the same great team in the kitchen. The gardens are large, and the patio with pergola is attractive and acts as a useful windbreak. People without dogs can eat in the restaurant, which looks incredible. Good dog walks nearby ( across the road ) and an ample car park .It's onee of the best Pub / restaurants in Essex!

A fantastic visit, complemented by great tasting food, friendly staff and a beautiful setting. We dined as a group of 4 for a birthday, and were given a great table with comfortable seating. There are plenty of food options to chose from as well as drinks. We went for the Galvin champagne which tastes amazing at only £15 a glass. For the starters, we ordered the Padron peppers and garlic and rosemary focaccia. For mains, the fillet of sea bream, Chateaubriand for two, and the risotto of broad bean. Food was served quickly and was fantastic. Highly recommended the dishes we chose. For desert, we shared the Chocolate fondant, and the restaurant were kind enough to surprise us with a birthday desert. We really enjoyed our evening and would highly recommend visiting here. Prices for some dishes on the higher side, but worth it.

Service blew me away, it was so good. Food very tasty, starter and sweet a bit on the small side but very good.

Excellent food but I need to call out the size of the desert. The cheesecake was great but it was about two mouthfuls. Profit over customer satisfaction isn't a great look.

Our first visit here for Sunday lunch, party of 4. We had 3 courses and all were delicious. The roast beef was cooked perfectly and had a wonderful flavour. The dining room was busy and lively but not noisy, a nice atmosphere. All the staff were professional and efficient but a special mention to our server Mia, simply wonderful, she made sure we had everything we needed without being intrusive, she was friendly and fun with it. We all loved her. (We had never met her before, she was just lovely)! We will definitely be back.

Thank you so much to Katie & her team for such a special lunch on my grandmother’s 88th birthday. Not only was the food & service spot on, they also went the extra mile with a birthday card & dessert. The appetisers were delicious, starters too. But the main courses knocked it out of the park. My ribeye was cooked to perfection, with satisfied remarks made by the whole table. Our desserts were equally as tasty - and by this time we were all suitably full! Thanks again for helping us celebrate my wonderful grandmother on such a special occasion.

Terrific as always, we had our own dining room for 10 and it was outstanding as before. Great atmosphere, lovely food and great service from Eve. Well done all round.

First time visitors having heard great reviews from friends. Food was excellent and staff very friendly and efficient. We were celebrating a joint birthday and received a little chocolate wafer with Happy Birthday etched in it. Lovely thoughtful touch with our desserts. Will definitely be returning.

This was my first Michelin dining experience and it lived up to expectations. The food was exquisite, the wine selection very broad. The staff that served us were very pleasant, polite, helpful and attentive (no mixed up orders at any point). The atmosphere felt very carefully designed and achieved a calm orderly and serene vibe. I will definitely be celebrating more events in my life here and would definitely recommend to others.

Great food, great service and pleasant atmosphere

Five stars - but, frankly, I'd expect nothing less from a pub run by two Michelin star chefs! If I were being hyper critical, the Waiter insisted in addressing everyone at our table - on a regular basis - as "My Friend" - which I found more annoying as the meal progressed! Other than that, it was as I expected. Nice touch with the small sorbet offered as a birthday surprise! Just a shame the staff were unaware of who's birthday it was, prior to our arrival!

Fabulous place for pub or restaurant dining. Service is very friendly, prompt and professional. The steak was stunning & they have their own Galvin champagne which is delicious! Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone!

I had the rib eye steak cooked medium, and the food overall was nice. The steak was flavorful and cooked as requested. However, it came with fries that were left sitting in the sauce, which made them soggy—definitely a letdown. I’d say the fries were quite poor because of that. I also tried the garlic with focaccia bread, and unfortunately, that wasn’t nice at all—bland and disappointing. On a positive note, the service was lovely. The waitress was nice and friendly, which added a pleasant touch to the experience.

Brilliant from start to finish, probably the best steak I have ever tasted!

Beautiful setting and very nice interior. But.... We got to the venue an hour or so before our table so we could have a couple of drinks in the pub side. Lovely atmosphere but ordering at the bar and waiting 15 mins was pretty poor. And then my dark and stormy arrived made with ginger ale, not ginger beer and completely tasteless. Each of the next two rounds took about 10 mins to get a waiter/waitress attention and 10 mins for the drinks. Shame as that's put us off going there just for drinks. As far as the meal was concerned, the starter and my wife's main were very good but I was somewhat surprised and disappointed to see a very small piece of halibut and even more so with the number of bones in such a small piece. My wife went for the chocolate fondant and asked if it came with ice cream. She was told no so ordered some to go on the side, yet in fact it came with pistachio ice cream! I guess the waitress was confused like us with the menu just saying pistachio, not pistachio ice cream. The waiting staff seemed pleasant enough but not overly attentive. All in all, for little less than a meal in Smiths it didn't really compare sadly.

We have been a few times before and never had an issue, this time however the service was woeful. Tables seated after us recieved food before us, time from seating to starter was an hour and it took 3 hours for the meal (when told we only had the table for 2). After being served main courses we had a battle to get cutlery, nobody checked if we wanted more drinks, empty glasses and plates were not cleared, to get the bill I ended up going to the till. Most food was ok, my pork was dry and the child chips were exceptionally salty. By apology the deserts were removed from the bill but it simply isn't worth the prices being charged.

Consistently fabulous food, lovely service and just an all round nice time! Visited again for mother's day and had a gorgeous Sunday roast with all the trimmings. My dog and my baby are always made to feel welcome and they do a lovely 'doggy menu' and children's menu as well. Our favourite pub by far!

From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, we were extremely happy with the service and cuisine. Well worth the visit.

Had an incredible roast today with excellent service. I had the Imam Bayaldi [roasted eggplant with cumin yoghurt]. Husband had the Torched Fillet of mackerel. Absolutely delicious. For mains I had the roast sirloin and my husband had the porchetta. Service excellent. Highly recommend this spot.

Excellent North Essex pub / restaurant. Great food and good wine list. Really good experience. We will be back - we came back and its great and we are back again.

Thanks to the very friendly and attentive service and the really great food, we 2 couples had a wonderful evening. The wine selection is also very good and the prices are reasonable.

Probably one of the worst roasts I have ever had, from the food down to the service. We ordered starters and they just flat out forgot to bring them. When our roast was in front of us they ask “do you want me to take this away and bring you your starter?”, like really? What kind of service is this that you would ask me that? Then on top of it, it seemed like they ran out of the roast sirloin, so they gave me a lousy piece of steak, and I guess were hoping that I wouldnt notice. My partners chicken was a lousy chicken breast that was so cold, and was supposed to be stuffed, but it was just a sliced chicken breast with slices of stuffing, like a kids meal? When ordered, I asked if I could replace my yorkshire pudding with anything else, and the waitress went back to ask her manager and came back to say that they can give me a gluten free stuffing instead. Then my food came without the stuffing! On top of all of this not one single thing was taken off of the bill as a kind gesture, I did not even really want dessert, I wanted a starter, but we ordered it to fit in with the “two courses”, and still! They offered us nothing as a kind gesture for such a terrible meal. This is not an appropriate way to run service when you have let a customer down. Not at all for the level of pub/restaurant that they claim to be. I will never come back here, such a scam.

We were lucky to get a Valentine’s Day booking at Galvin Green Man; the food was great, the service amazing and personalised (thanks Emma!) and even though we were seated in the pub, the atmosphere was wonderful and the table was spacious. As a vegan, I was apprehensive about the set menu, but I was reassured on the phone before our booking that there would be options. On the day, I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, each menu item was delicious and both my non-vegan boyfriend and I agreed that the mushroom risotto was the best we both had ever had. Overall, I would highly recommended Galvin for both those who have dietary requirements and those who are happy to have anything on the menu. The portion sizes were generous, the quality of the food was high and the service was fantastic.

This was our second visit, and once again, it was a fantastic experience. We enjoyed starting the evening with a drink in the pub side, which has a great selection of drinks. The service on both visits was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere. The food was truly excellent—refined, well-balanced, and anything but ordinary. A standout dish this time was their special celebration dish featuring Boudin Blanc, which was delightfully flavorful and expertly prepared. The selection of wines is also excellent. Overall, two wonderful nights at this restaurant, and we’ll definitely be returning. If I had one suggestion, white tablecloths would add a touch of elegance and help soften the noise, creating an even more perfect dining experience. Highly recommended!

This was my second time at the restaurant. The starter was really tasty, and the chicken main was absolutely amazing. The dessert was good too, though a bit too chocolatey for my taste.

The food itself was delicious, but I had the Tiramisu for dessert and it was really spoiled, the cream or milk in it was no longer good, it tasted really bad, my husband had also tasted it and said exactly the same. We reported it to the waiter, who did not respond so we asked ourselves and according to the chef there was nothing wrong with it. Well, sorry, but this has really made people sick.

January 25, 2025, I attended the Burns Night celebration at Galvin Green Man, a historic pub and restaurant near Chelmsford, Essex. The evening was a delightful blend of Scottish tradition and culinary excellence. The event featured a four-course menu priced at £48 per person, accompanied by Scottish bagpipes and the traditional haggis ceremony. The dishes were thoughtfully prepared, reflecting the restaurant's commitment to seasonal and local ingredients. The ambiance was enhanced by the historic setting of the pub, which dates back to 1341, providing a cozy and authentic atmosphere. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, contributing to a memorable experience. While the food was exceptional, the overall experience of the Burns Night celebration at Galvin Green Man was truly enjoyable, offering a perfect blend of tradition, atmosphere, and high-quality cuisine.

We went expecting more but unfortunately we were slightly disappointed considering the cost. There’s no disputing that it’s a lovely building with some great features and friendly staff but the Sunday lunch was slightly underwhelming at that price point. £42 plus 12.5% service charge for a 3 course Sunday lunch is probably at the higher end compared to other places in the area and we left with the opinion that there are better options for less locally. We can’t comment on the other menus that are offered on other days but unfortunately not somewhere we’d choose to return for Sunday lunch.

Had a lovely lunch for a relatives birthday. The sausage roll and quail egg starter was amazing!

Good exceptional. Sat at a table just as you walk into the restaurant. Did mention after starter that very cold as a draft every time door opened and legs were cold. It was very cold today. No offer of moving us just said they would put the heater on over the door to help. Did not improve became busy and regular drafts all through our meal. Never checked to see if we were now warm. Very disappointing would not recommend

Unfortunately the heating was broken when we attended so we had to sit with coats on in a freezing cold restaurant. They do have beautiful fireplaces but apparently the chimneys haven’t been swept for a couple of years so they sat unlit. The restaurant could have phoned and warned us in advance; apologised as we sat down rather than telling us when we asked fir the heating to be turned up; or offered a discount as an apology. None of this happened. Eating in a freezing cold restaurant is not my idea of fun and I can’t recommend at all

The food was very good and plentiful. However, whilst the staff were attentive and helpful, I thought some were quite untidily dressed, which reflected badly on the calibre of the restaurant.

Very impressed. Plenty of room when we visited for lunch, both in restaurant and pub. Extremely good welcome, service and food. We'll definitely be back. No hesitation in recommending.

Ok, but disappointed....I expected more. We sat in the side room by the bar. Possibly the restaurant experience may have been better. Service was shoddy, olives (pre starter nibble) came at the same time as mains actually after the mains were placed. Wine was barely chilled. Olives were out of a can. Fish and chips slightly overcooked, in my opinion. Not received any check back, had to go to the bar to order another wine after my glass was empty for 10 minutes. Only given the bar menu, I had to ask to see the full menu selection, even though all menus are served on the bar side. I'm pleased others have had better service. So, it was ok. But I expected more. Sorry.

Had not visited before however wouldn’t hesitate to return. Focaccia was really light with some beautiful balsamic vinegar to dip into. OH and I had the chateaubriand, dauphinois potatoes, broccoli and side of honeyed chantanay carrots. The steak was the most tender well cooked piece of beef that we’ve both had for a long time. Our compliments to the chef. Hubby had treacle tart & chantilly cream and I had crème brûlée with wine poached pear. Gorgeous bottle of Rioja accompanied dinner and good strong coffee to finish a great meal. Service was on point, not intrusive.

What can I say this was such a special evening for my family, made so special by the staff, food was amazing and the private dining areas were sensational we’ll done green man

This restaurant provided one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we walked in, it was clear we were in for a disaster. Despite there being an obviously available table right next to the entrance, we were told to wait for 20 minutes for a "prepared table." When we finally sat down, it was, predictably, at the same table that had been vacant all along. Insulting doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling. The service was a complete joke. Waitstaff were utterly indifferent—never once bothering to ask if we wanted refills on drinks. We had to practically wave them down just to get their attention. Not once did they check if our meal was acceptable or if we needed anything during our time there. As for the food, it was as underwhelming as the service. Bread served cold, without butter. The rest of the meal? Average at best, and priced as if they were serving a five-star experience. Spoiler: they’re not. Overpriced, underwhelming, and unprofessional. Save your time and money—never again will I set foot in this place.

Very nice restaurant, service was good. However, the main meal was Luke warm, and the plates that it was served on were cold. The Yorkshire puddings were cold, overall average roast disappointing for the price.

Today we ate at the Galvin green man for the first time for my partners birthday, and as someone who has dietary requirements they were absolutely amazing. As soon as we walked through the door they assured me the kitchen team had been briefed on the requirements for my meal and the food came out spot on, no mistakes, quick service. All the waitresses were friendly and very helpful. The service was on point, the food was delicious. Couldn’t fault it at all, thank you so much for a lovely meal. Can’t wait to come again.

Tried the Bib Gourmand menu which was £28 for starter and main and £30 with dessert. Good choice of dishes and all excellent quality but only one dessert so could do with an alternative. For a high quality restaurant it's excellent value and it would be good to try the a la carte but for a special occasion as it looked quite pricey. If the quality is as good as the Bib Gourmand menu it would be worth it.

i was sat outside in the garden for barbeque and there was not a good selection, the chips were raw and the burgers were cold. serice was okay but when we told them about the food they never returned.the atmosphere was okay there was music and a kids area. and was not aloid to park in the parking spot

I had hight expectations as I’d been planning to come here a long time; they were exceeded by the friendliness of staff, the quality of food and the lovely establishment. I am now engineering road trips so I can return for lunch!

It's increasing rare to find high-quality food, good value, and excellent service all in one place, but the Galvin Green Man achieves all of this in pleasant surroundings. Outstanding. This represents a new standard for this class of restaurant, one which others we have to match if they are going to survive.

The food here is absolutely fantastic. Very nicely presented, creative and full of flavour. The service was extremely slow, we waited 20 min to make an order and waited for drinks around 45min. Had to ask for water multiple times as no waiter would offer it. It was my husbands birthday which was flagged at the reservation when I made it and I was hoping that like any other restaurant would offer some sort of treat for the occasion but unfortunate nothing was provided. Why ask about occasion if you’re not doing anything about it. The food was amazing but the experience overall was very average if not disappointing.

Lovely meal, lovely setting. Only gripe was the red wine, ordered the recommended red wine, not cheap arrived in a labelless bottle, which appeared to come from a tap. Had much better wine for far less money.
