Galvin Green Man in Chelmsford

We have visited Galvin Greenman several times, enjoying both its restaurant and pub. Each visit has been a delightful experience. We particularly appreciate the option of a casual dinner in the pub, where we can bring our dog along. The food is consistently excellent, the service top-notch, and the prices quite affordable. Despite the 40-minute drive, we always find it worthwhile to make the trip. Even Max, my dog, loves the gaff and enjoys watching everyone.

First time we have visited for a while and we were not disappointed. My wife has several foods that set off her IBS. The staff completely understood and walked through how they could prepare her meal - first restaurant in a long time that gave her multiple options, first restaurant where she was able to have a three course meal. The food was lovely for both of us - cooked perfectly and great tasting. Special shout out for the rhubarb sorbet. Oh and they serve a very decent pint - they know how to look after real ale! Can’t speak highly enough of the friendly staff - made our day. Highly recommended and we will definitely revisit.

Good food but terrible service. The courses didn’t arrive at our table at the same time, there was no attention to detail, placing plates on top of napkins and menus, we also felt it was a rushed service when taking orders and very slow drinks service to our table. The wait staff were not uniform like other restaurants you might dine in at these prices. It’s not just about the food when you’re paying this sort of money for food, it’s the experience, which wasn’t great. We were disappointed with our server, we noted a bit of attitude, and to top off the pretty dismal performance of the food and drinks service the ladies toilets were also unclean. This was our second time but definitely the last. There are far nicer restaurants in Essex for these prices.

Food was good and reason for the 4 star rating. Service is not commensurate with the good quality food. - It took the bar attendant 20 minutes to prepare 6 drinks on arrival. - Once seated, we waited 35 minutes for our drinks order to be served. - When the wine arrived it was not what was ordered. - Our food arrived before the drinks including wine. - When the food arrived, the steaks were not as ordered or had been placed in the wrong position. It was easier for us to change our own plates. - When we booked our table online it asked for any special occasion. We were also asked when we were taken to our table. On both occasions we said it was for a birthday, but there was nothing done to help celebrate the occasion ie complimentary dessert. - As a result , we said that we would not pay the Service charge which was £54 (£9 each for a table of 6). Surprisingly we were not asked why, or if there was a problem. We would have been happy to give constructive and useful feedback, to help overcome the issues we experienced for other customers. Shame because it’s the little things that make a big difference and with the food and venue being very good, service was not on the same level.

We are fairly regular users of GGM and had a really excellent lunch with some very well prepared tasty food however I should point out that the prices have increased significantly in recent times. Roughly £75/head for lunch is now London prices and will certainly restrict the number of times we go. The wine we would have previously paid £30/bottle is now £47/bottle and main courses up to £47/course is too high for a country pub experience.

Visited for my parents’ anniversary and was very impressed with the menu and service. A lovely building, nice and light and airy and the service was excellent throughout. Greeted on arrival and the staff were very attentive to various dietary requirements. Lovely food and would definitely come back again.

Amazing time at Galvin green man! We went for the Sunday set menu and started with the famous scotch egg which was unbelievable. The roast beef was delicious with really tasty roast potatoes! Such a lovely venue with a great vibe, would highly recommend for a great meal out

Sat in Pub side for an early evening meal. Was told it was table service yet had to wait a really long time for drinks to be ordered and then left with finished plates on table for 40mins, despite me getting up to get the desert menus as signal to the 3 staff behind the bar. Left with a £100 bill and don’t bother spending on deserts. Was told they took service charge off the receipt which was appropriate as the service was non-existent. Really disappointed as I don’t think the Galvin management would be happy with that either.

Great local pub. Staff incredibly attentive at keeping the fire topped up. Felt lovely and relaxed. Food here is also A+

The one saving grace of our meal was the great, attentive service. The food was sadly average and very overpriced. There were only two small slices of beef with the roast and were largely fat, though at least they tasted nice. Decent roast potatoes but the rest of the tasteless veg left a lot to be desired. Tried a couple different wines, all of which were low quality. Very disappointing particularly given the price point. I wouldn’t recommend a visit.

Really cracking place, it does its thing (which is food and drink!) really well and has the potential to be next-level in the summer, with a big garden and a veranda….. does a pub quiz too!

Celebrated our 20 year wedding anniversary with a lovely meal here. We’ve been to Galvin Green Man a few times and it never disappoints, the setting, the food and the service is all first class. Chloe our waitress helped me decide over the main course as the choices were so good I couldn’t make my mind up! Chloe was a little star throughout the meal, very good at filling the wine glass up!! Food - Starters: Beetroot cured salmon with baby beets & lobster & salt cod in a lobster bisque. Mains: both had the ribeye (we are booking to go back to try the duck and fish!). Deserts: Pear crumble with nutmeg custard & BBQ pineapple and coconut baked Alaska - they made the desert super cute by adding chocolate “Happy Anniversary” messages. We drank a lovely Sauvignon Blanc with our meal and had a gin in the bar whilst waiting for the taxi. Can not wait to book again!

Factual review: Arrived for a 50th birthday meal (travelled for an hour with a family of x 6). As soon as we sat down the waitress (Emily) made a very harsh statement to one of our diners (she is a mature 23-year old). She said in a very loud voice ''I can see you had one drink in the bar, so I will not be serving you a drink at the table as we have a very strict 'Challenge 25 policy''. We could not believe it! What an horrendous start to what have should have been a great dining experience. Not being personal here but her voice, tone and volume sounded like she was a children's entertainer! Something out of a Catherine Tate comedy sketch! I understand your policy, but you need to manage this better. If we had just rocked up at the bar ordering shots etc. then I totally understand. But when there is a mature family dining at a table, you do not manage the policy in this way! 'Challenge' is a very strong word and you do not apply that loudly to a majority mature table of diners in full view of everyone. Fair play she did come back and apologize after I complained, but she done this again very loudly gaining much attention from other diners that just added to the embarrassment. Food: Focaccia was not Focaccia. Even my 12-year old daughter knew this. It was just thickly sliced white bread, slightly stale! The Mozzarella dish was bland. Low quality with some chopped up blood orange made to look a little fancy - that's it. My Gin cured Salmon was hilariously small. 3 tiny slithers that did not really taste of anything other than Salmon. I could have put all these pieces on a fork and eaten in one go if had wanted. Catch of the day was Cod!! Out of all the fish! It was just 'ok'. Sauce was watery and you simply could not cut through the baby leeks! We had to rush dessert as despite having a 2-hour slot, service was slow and late. The photos of the food on the website (appreciate they are representations), but they did not match what style and substance is generally being served, that we experienced and witnessed. Totally ruined what should have been a great 50th dining experience. We made the effort and investment to complete a 2-hour round trip via an expensive taxi. We wish you had put as much effort in as we had. Yes we received a free bottle of Prosecco and no service charge. I appreciate that, but if this was just another meal for us, great. But this was a very special birthday meal. We are regular diners so we know what to expect. Totally ruined the birthday experience.

Slightly underwhelmed. We were expecting a cosy pub atmosphere but the dining takes place in a modern refectory style structure a bit like an upmarket motorway cafe.

Good food, service and atmosphere. Table spacing was ideal unlike some restaurants. Cutlery and glasses on tables were also very clean. All staff were polite and attentive. Well done everyone!

We have been three times, and each visit is a good as the last, staff are friendly and professional. The food is the best your taste in Essex and the place is fantastic. Me and my husband said we make this a treat once a month.

The food and service are always absolutely excellent. All the staff are very happy friendly helpful. Absolutely a great team! The menus which seem to change very frequently are interesting and with ample choice. My only reservation is the noise level. In the main restaurant noise rattling around can be unbearable. It’s all hard surfaces so nothing to absorb the sounds of the shouty people. Empty vessels etc. The front of the building which is the old pub is much calmer and always my preference but not bookable. That said on my last visit a very loud group came in and ultimately I asked them to quieten down as they were all shouting at once. More empty vessels! In fairness they moderated the volume. All that said I always look forward to going back.

Absolutely lovely restaurant. Went yesterday for my partner's 25th birthday, and we had a wonderful time. Staff was very friendly, food was delicious and the atmosphere was delightful. As a hospitality worker herself, she couldn't find a fault, and only had high remarks! We highly recommend and will be coming again 😊

It was our first time at this restaurant and probably the last, for dinner anyway.The restaurant interior was lovely, especially the entrance and bar area.The staff seemed friendly,service was just ok.I had the pork cheeks with mash potato, it was tasty but the portions were small.I think that as food prices rise restaurants seem to be putting their prices up sharply and making the portions smaller, either do one or the other, keep it reasonable with smaller portions or keep them the same generous portions and raise the price.I think £34 for a small portion of pork cheeks with mash and a side of broccoli is way overpriced.The red wine came out very cold after waiting 10 minutes for it, the wine guys at the restaurant should know that red wine should be served at a certain temperature, we were told by the manageress that the pipes the wine come through are colder in the winter, this needs to be sorted out as a glass of Pinot Noir at £12.60 tasted like a £8.99 bottle of plonk from the supermarket.The vegan option of beetroot pasta that my girlfriend had was awful and most of it was left at the table.If you are going to offer 1-2 options for vegans at least make them 10/10.I eat vegan food 2-3 times a week and as a meat eater I could not of eaten the beetroot pasta dish.The chef needs to get some advice on vegan food quickly as its a growing market.We asked for a 20 minute break between starter and the main course and 5 minutes later was told the main was coming out half way through our starter, which we stopped ,the manageress kindly sorted that out but obviously there is a breakdown in communication between the waitress and the kitchen.The food and service in general was just ok, with competition in every town now these fine dining restaurants need to up their game, high prices and average food with small portions is only going one way when lots of people are struggling and can cook amazing food at home for a fraction of the price.We may return in the summer for a bar snack as the place looked nice, but as for dinner, there are too many other nicer options nearby.

There were four of us with our dog. The place is dog friendly if you eat in the bar but I don't think they take dogs in the restaurant. The welcome and service were very friendly and professional. The bar man and manageress were delightful. The food was top quality pub fare (we had burgers, fish and chips and the chicken and ham pie). There was a choice of three guest ales. Car park was spacious. All in all, we had a lovely evening and would recommend. the place. We shall come again.

Having eaten at the Green Man several times before and being regulars at other restaurants in the Galvin stable, we simply had to attend this dinner to celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the opening of the Green Man. We received a very warm welcome from Katie and her team, before starting off with a glass of Galvin champagne which was included in the five-course tasting menu. Jeff and Chris Galvin gave and interesting presentation about the Green Man, with various anecdotes about the previous seven years before introducing the dishes on the menu. They were also on hand later in the evening to chat to diners and answer questions. Five delicious courses followed, the highlight probably being the venison loin, but the steak tartare and the cod courses we so good that it was difficult to be sure. The final course of rum baba was not something that we would normally choose, but we enjoyed it as it was not too sweet and came laced with rum! One of the benefits of a set menu is the occasional surprise such as this. We selected wines from the pairing to accompany some of the courses, which we thought were well chosen. The restaurant was well staffed and the service was very attentive but friendly. My water glass was never once empty. £75 for the five courses and £32 for the wine pairing represented very good value for the standard of the food and service.

This casually elegant restaurant serves amazing food. A high standard of culinary skills was evident on our relatively simple lunch. If you want welcoming staff great ingredients cooked splendidly then treat yourself to the pub menu . We will be back, maybe restaurant next, or maybe not, i feel confident we will enjoy either.

Food was excellent service was very good.

We went for a Sunday roast - the food itself was lovely but the service was incredibly slow. We were at our table for over 2.5 hours, and it took an hour to received our starters. It’s a shame because the food is very good, but they definitely need more staff for a busy Sunday service.

All the Staff in the pub, restaurant & reception could not have been any more hospitable. A fantastic evening was had by our group of 4 celebrating an Engagement. Just a great night!

Attended for a business lunch. My food was delicious and presented well. Perhaps a little over priced. I found the staff young and inexperienced, staff were all lovely, but simple things like lack of cutlery awareness for different dishes affects the overall experience.

Never again!! Grossly over priced for food of significantly below part, could not taste the main item of the dish swamped with decorative items that spoilt the the whole dish. Service was poor for a Michelin rated establishment, order fish for main course but they could not be bothered to provide fish cutlery. Been here quite a few times since it opened. Food is very good quality. Scotch egg was really good . My wife had smoked salmon which to be honest was very small for the price. She also had the fish of the day . Which was pointed out came with the head and tail which looking at it. Was so small. I thought it was illegal to land this size. At £28.50 was not value for the money in any way. I had a rib eye was very good. Just looking at my bill ? I fuming that they have over charged me for for 125ml Beaumont rose wine @£15. I had one bottle of Sancerre @£61 which was fine there was only two of us . If I had noticed this on the night. I would have not given a service charge and now feel that I have been totally screwed over charged with the service charge £39.65 for what. Would I go back sorry no not now after looking at my bill . I suggest that the till staff look at the bills before they are sent to the table to check for any errors if possible. Another point is why should you automatically put on a £1 charge for Love food.Give Food ?plus it comes with a service ? Are you keeping the service charge part?? . Yes you say on the bottom of the bill you would remove it. But how many people would ask ?? Now the worst part of this review. I phoned the restaurant speaking to the receptionist and just giving a outline and was told someone would be calling me the next day . That very day Monday I had a call . Which fine a day early. I said I was in a business meeting but I took the time out to explain and was told that I was overcharged and they were going to credit me. Which I said fine but could we speak tomorrow due to me in a meeting. Which I was told he would call me back tomorrow and arrange the credit I have waited now 8 days for a call back and still no call back!! This is not good customer service. So would I go back after feeling totally robbed never and I’m sure my friends and family will follow my advice. It’s not the money it’s just not right

We stopped here after a dog walk for a spot of lunch and a drink in the sunshine. There was one man on the bar that seemed to be doing all of the drinks so quite a wait to be served. Sadly we were also informed they were not doing lunch outside this day and we can eat inside however there is a long wait. Not sure if they were short staffed but lots of dirty tables there also. We had one drink and a packet of crisps and went on our way.

We had lunch here, with friends from Edinburgh, who were very impressed by the choice and quality of the food as well as the excellent customer service. It's impossible to pick out a favourite dish as all were so good. Highly recommend.

Excellent food and service..you can feel and observe the high standards the owners have both in the food and the staff selection. A good selection of 0.0% beverages too so driving is not a problem! thoroughly recommended.

Food and service both excellent. The menu includes a varied and very good selection of different 'plates' - enough to suit the vast majority of tastes. The food quality was first class. Background music was a tad too loud, but was not overly intrusive. Certainly a restaurant to be recommended.

Very nice pub in a pretty little village. We went for Sunday Dinner, but I was disappointed. The food was okay, nothing bad, but nothing great either. There's only a choice between beef and chicken. I found the chicken dry. On the plus side, there's a real cider on tap - the Norfolk Adder, so top marks for that.
