The Rose & Crown in Dacorum

Well we came back here yesterday, 5th May 25. We had a much better experience all around! We were served by Elise, who was delightful and very patient, as 2 of our number had special dietary needs! The burgers 3 of us had were very nice, dense, and quite tasty. The seabass was very good, as was the superfood salad, but please offer oil and balsamic, maybe as an alternative to the pineapple ketchup, which was too sweet for my friend. Much better, though, and great service by Elise! We had a mixed experience in sunday. The roasts were very hit and miss. The roast pork was very good. The slow cooked part of the duo of beef was excellent, but the slices of beef were a bit chewy at best and one friend's was pretty inedible as it was full of gristle. The naked burger we ordered came as a dirty burger and had to go back as our friend is intolerant to cheese, and this took a lot longer than we were told and we had finished our meals by the time his food came. However, the staff were lovely, and they took the burger off the bill and a further 20% for the delays. Could be really good but service needs to be less chaotic and they could do with a manager overseeing the while thing.

Went for lunch and the service I received was amazing. Jamie was really attentive and helpful. The food was really good aswell. Would definitely come back and recommend this place.

I was looking for a last minute booking for Mother's Day this morning as I didn't feel like cooking this evening when I was reminded of the Rose & Crown in Kings Langley, a pub I haven't been to since I left school 30 years ago! I am so glad I booked here as the food, for the most part, was lovely. The only gripe we had was that my wife's steak was more rare than medium. Without asking, though, the cost of the steak was removed from our final bill because of this. A special mention must go to our server, Elise. She was friendly, attentive and funny and deserves a five star rating of her own, an asset to the pub indeed. I won't leave it another thirty years to return and that's for sure!

I booked a table for 4 people for 7:30 on the 29th march. We turned up at 7:15, it took 10 minutes of us waiting at the restaurant check in and no one acknowledged us, we had to be ask to be seated. We were taken to a table with only 3 place settings to be told they would ad another chair etc, the table was too small. We asked to be sat at another table that was free and more suitable for 4. Sat down and as the staff were setting the table we were told they didn’t have enough knives and we were would have to make do. I then received a text message from the pub saying we were late for our booking?! This review isn’t about the food as that was good however the service and the text message was not acceptable. They should not be sending messages to people like that when their own business isn’t in order.

Came in for a couple of drinks with a friend and received fantastic service by Billy. Great cocktails and highly recommend the desserts too. Would definitely recommend.

We had a very enjoyable evening meal with helpful and friendly service from all the staff. The sea bass was delicious. We were served by Piper.

My wife and I have just had a lovely supper at the Rose and Crown, my chicken was delicious as was my wife’s sea bass. Really fantastic service from Piper.

Not sure if it was the day we visited or something else. We visited this pub on the last Saturday of February 2025. All the tables on the left section from the bar were booked and there were no available tables on the right section. Fair enough. We decided to wait for the table. At one point 3 tables became available, however it took the staff about 10-15min to clear the dirty dishes. We occupied one of the tables however it was very dirty with liquids spilled on it which the staff did not clean when the tables were cleared. We one staff member to clean the table and it took him more than 5 min to do that. I ordered myself salad with chicken which took around 50 min to prepare and when it finally came it came with goat cheese. Unsure why so long as there was nothing that had to be cooked. We asked the waitress to change the salad as we paid for the chicken salad. She was not particularly happy about it and did not apologize for it. Please up your game people.

Avoid this pub , you will be treated like nothing...I have lived in London for many years but never been treated like this in a pun, specially by the managers. I'm working in facilities management filed for many years and I know that client is the most important, but I believe someone has to remind to Steven that he is getting his wage base on customers.. Steven you should serve, rather than be in charge ..as you don't know yet how to treat customers.... I will never again go to this pub...and I will advise to, not to do! Don't..stay away

Tables are full of dirty plates, tables and empty glasses - been here for nearly hour and a half they must be running short of glasses at least eight tables have not been cleaned since we arrived - don’t know who is running this place now but people turn up and look how well the place is looking and walk back out.

Crispy calamari was rubbery and cold, so sent it back. Goats cheese tart - microwaved - you CANT microwave puff pastry. Served with watercress that had seen much better days. Clearly packed food out of the freezer and into microwave or deep fryer. BILLIONAIRES fries sounded amazing at £5.95 a portion. Very disappointed that they were frozen French fries with the tiniest bit of pancetta you could barely see it and a bit of squirty truffle mayonnaise- no Parmesan in sight. Absolutely nothing ‘billionaire’ about them. Terrible waste of our money and I won’t be spending out in these awful pubs that serve this type of food again. Friendly staff.

Waited 20 minutes for our order to be taken and another 30 to be served. No one came to ask if the food was ok or if we needed another drink. My fried chicken burger was too hard and fries cold. The crust on the pie was too hard to eat around the edges.

Lovely pub, great Sunday Roast!

I've never visited here before but will certainly do so again. Lunch date with a friend, friendly staff, great food. Could do with a bit of background music but we had a lovely lunch date.

We had an impromptu visit and despite the restaurant being busy, we were offered a table for an hour and 15 mins for which we were appreciative. Jamie and his team were absolutely lovely, engaging and polite, and offered first class service levels. The food was amazing - I think I've just eaten the best rare fillet I've tasted in years! My partner's Dirty Burger was exactly that - not easy to eat, but didn't half taste good! We had a conversation with Jamie at the end of our meal about team and overall M&B management dynamics - how refreshing it was to hear such positive feedback. So - visit, eat and tip them well, they're a great team!

I split my review into separate areas so I can give fair account of our experience. To start with I called to enquire if the kitchen is open and if they are busy or we can just come in (Valentines day 4pm). Nice gentleman advised we can come and sit with our dog in bar area. When we arrived we saw the offer for Valentines day of set menu. So we wanted to enquire. The staff looked absolutely disinterested in us. So we stood twice in the queue without clear answer. Second time I returned to check if the table was free in the restaurant (if I put my dog in the car as there dogs are not allowed) I was ignored, and they made it look like they forgot what I was enquiring. When I asked if we can change the table I heard that they are fully booked. I looked and there was only one table taken. So I said, really... it looks empty to me. I said is this such a big problem, and at this point the lady realised what's going on and surprised she said, oh now. And eventually we moved - on our own, noone helped us with baby chair or guided us to the table. The wait for the food was horrendous. So as we entered 3:50pm, we left at 6pm. We really hoped for the quick late lunch with the baby. Oh well. The food was good, fancy, but also expensive, and I'm not sure if the price was justified for the quality and portions. Positives: - the decor is very beautiful - shout out to Stephen who was the only staff member who made our experience better - he was just polite, smiley person, not like the other two people from the previous shift. The people who came for 5pm shift looked also nice. - big parking - dog friendly area - some sitting outside - baby menu and changing facilities - clean toilets

I booked Rose and Crown for a works lunch and get together.. The positives about the visit was the setting, car parking, friendly staff. and some of the meals were very good On the negative side, I had the crab, prawn and chorizo linguine, which is a favourite dish of mine when I go out to places. It would have been very tasty except it was extremely spicy to the degree my mouth and tongue were tingling and I kept needing to drink water. I did raise it at the time and was just told it is a spicy dish. I love spicey food but this was clearly more than just a bit of chilli in it.. Also later that afternoon, I experienced tummy cramps and that evening had severe diarrhoea, which was obviously not a pleasant experience! The second issue was I had a birthday voucher which entitled me to a free main meal when purchasing another Main Meal, taking off the lowest price one. There were seven of us, with six of us having main meals and one person having just a sandwich. I was extremely disappointed that what was taken off was the price of a sandwich someone ordered, which is not classed as a Main meal on the main meal listing on the menu, which meant I had to pay over £8, meaning my meal wasn't free. We regularly go for work get togethers but sadly this experience has put me off booking again.

Five stars isn’t even enough to describe how good Lulu’s service was. She’s great at her job and made my experience perfect. Long live the rose and crown!

Louis was an absolute gem as a bartender. His cocktails were perfection and I’ve never tasted anything quite like an espresso martini the way he made it! I will definitely be coming back, just to see him again!

Been to the Rose & Crown and had the sharing roast which was delicious … And after sat in the bar Area and had a few drinks our barman was called Louis he was so friendly and made the best cocktails 10/10 thank you

My partner and I decided we wanted to enjoy an afternoon meal at the restaurant after travelling for business. However, we waited at the entrance for 5 mins with no service. We then asked the woman at the bar if we sit down or if someone would attend to us. She said you can sit in the lounge or we can just continue to wait. (Slightly rude in the way it was said). After waiting a few more minutes we decided to leave as the customer service was lacking. Before we left my partner decided to go to the toilet, I then sat down in the lounge. As she was at the toilet I observed the conversation of the two barmaid/waitresses. After their conversation, the waitress shugged and said they can just order at the bar. Even though we had waited for table service. Sorry we we're such an inconvenient. Also my partner observed that there was only toilet roll in only one of the 5 cubicles and urine all over 3 of the toilet seats.

Delicious food paired with attentive waiting staff made for a nice night out here. I went for the classic chicken burger which was delicious, then the sticky toffee pudding which didn’t disappoint. Our server Piper treated us excellently and was always on top of things. We will be coming back again for sure.

No hearing, no fire and half the people still have their coats, as do we ! It's 17 degrees and that's cold inside.... It's cold outside ! Asked about the fire and staff didn't seem interested!! Also no lights in one of pub... looks pokey and dingy .... Shame because really nice pub inside

We had an extremely disappointing experience during our recent visit. From the moment we arrived, it was clear the restaurant was understaffed and chaotic. Despite adding specific notes to our booking, these were ignored. The manager appeared stressed and unhelpful, and the lack of organisation was evident throughout. It took 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and we had to remind them to place our food order as well, which eventually arrived over an hour and a half later. Throughout the lunchtime and into the late afternoon, the staff repeatedly mentioned being short-staffed and a chef down. However, this didn’t seem to affect other diners, including a table of 15 who were served promptly, finished their meals, and left long before we received our food. We felt at best forgotten and, at worst, deliberately ignored. The waiters did eventually apologise for the delays, but by that point, the damage had been done. The food itself was subpar, and my father couldn’t eat his sea bass. As a result, he suffered a diabetic hypo on the journey home, which was both alarming and preventable with better service and quality food. The manager neither apologised or acknowledged the overall poor experience until we complained at the end. Only then were we offered a 50% discount and a free meal, but honestly, we shouldn’t have been charged at all. The experience was so poor that we will not be returning. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We chose this place as it is exactly half way between groups of friends. It has much to commend it. For example, it’s easy to find, easy to park and really lovely inside. In addition the menu is vast and there really is something for everyone. We were also very happy with the friendly & efficient service. What lets it down is the prices. The food is not bad, but for what you get, it is very over-priced. We had belly pork, fish and chips and half a roast chicken. Each was about £19. The fish and chips was like a child’s portion. “Half”a roast chicken was just larger than one leg. And the smallest handful of chips we have ever seen. What a shame. Great potential, but at those prices for those portions, I can’t see us returning.

Really lovely pub, although I called ahead to check they were serving food and they failed to tell me the kitchen was closing early. I had invited friends who were travelling long distance to join me to have dinner for my birthday. We were very disappointed to be told the kitchen was closed on ordering at 8:06pm. I would come back again but would appreciate better communication of their serving times.

Great food, bit pricey but worth every penny!

We regularly have lunch here ..We weren’t told there wasn’t going to be a lunchtime menu when it was booked …but the food was ok ..all 4of us ordered tea after the meal …..after a while the waiter came along ….’right we’ve only got two teabags left … ,,who wants a coffee “ ! I did suggest there’s a shop nearby to get some more … We’ve always had a lovely manager but the one on Monday wasn’t … and that was before the meal .

Had Christmas Eve dinner here with the family, we had an enjoyable meal with great staff, but do the management who are behind the scenes need a good dressing down. Our first choice of red wine was unavailable, as was our second, we were then offered a different wine not on the list (left overs?), but given we were ordering a complex Italian, the version of Beaujolais they were trying to unload was not welcome. We were served the wrong white wine twice, at one point we thought we may never get any wine. We went for the upgrade festive menu but quite a few items on the menu were unavailable, it was easier to ask the waiter to confirm what was available rather than make a selection, eight of us wanted the steak, they had one! They gave us a steak upgrade, just as well for me as there was no other mail listed that I wanted. The staff handled all the issues with a smile, stayed calm and professional and worked through. The food we did receive was delicious. We will go back, but probably never as a large group or on a holiday date.

Spent Christmas lunch here, great food, warm atmosphere and excellent service

Food quality was excellent. Staff were friendly and efficient. Mac and cheese needed bit more flavour and the trimming of the festive menu were served separate but would've preferred it in the dish. Food overall was very high quality and great wine. Highly recommend the place and we will visit again soon.

pros-as usual fantastic food. friendly waiting staff. fab cocktails. cons- this time disappointed as booked on 16th Oct for festive menu which runs to 30th Dec and was offered a lovely bottle of decent fizz for early booking. my friend travelled for the occasion. however this offer finished yesterday. was never very clear that it didnt run the whole of the festive period and I had a screenshot of the offer which didnt show the end date. told that this is a regular confusion including last year and yet has not been sorted. were refused the bottle of fizz but offered a glass. after pushing a bit was given a bottle of wine instead, which was appreciated. however it was obvious that the Manager wasnt overly happy about it and we were left feeling uncomfortable. there was toing and throwing for 20mins and so partly ruined the night which is a shame as this is my regular pub .

Lovely Sunday roast dinner for two! Was cooked perfectly and price is reasonable. Lovely atmosphere and manager took amazing care for us. Honestly staff tonight have been attentive and made our evening. Well done.

Cannot fault the food at all. However, not only was the service appallingly slow, all the staff have been expertly trained in avoiding all eye contact with any patron. It took over three hours for just four of us to have a starter and a main. 40 mins from ordering to getting starter. 20mins to have those plates cleared and then another 45 mins to receive mains. The restaurant was busy but not overly so. We were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu once the fourth main course plate was finally collected. We said yes, then after another 15 minutes with no menus appearing we had to go up to the bar and ask for the bill. Another ten minutes later went to the bar again and asked if we could pay. Then waiter said his card machine wasn’t logged in so had to find his manager! Another few minutes passed and then it was decided our bill was wrong. The manager then farted about with it to reprint EXACTLY the same bill (we knew was correct anyway). Two of us split the bill and unbelievably he had to use the calculator on his phone to double check that what I told him to take from each of us covered the total!!!! It’s basic maths that’s five year old could do. As mentioned, food was delicious but we won’t be hurrying back due to terrible service. That being said the staff are very polite just need significant training in watching the room and their tables.

Cara is literally the best - she remembered our big group from last year and managed to sort all the finer details to ensure the smoothest and most enjoyable evening - everytime!
