This is one of the places which I'm always rushing past, without the time to go in, and it's most frustrating when that involves a Pub. So as I was working in Trowbridge, I made a particular effort to open a gap in my schedule. I can tell it's a friendly place, as there are often happy-looking people sitting outside. They say the people make the Pub, although further research will be needed, as I managed to pop in on a very quiet day. Nonetheless, the few people who were around were chatty and informative, and they're ducking in the Bar photo, to make less work for me in obscuring faces afterwards. The Pub is 200 years old, having been built the same time as the railway it's next to. It used to be even closer to the trains, but part of it was demolished, to make way for an access road. There are various humorous sayings and conversation points scattered around the main indoor area, which looks very cosy. These include a steampunk table, a water barrel for dogs, a shelf of old books, and unusual lighting features. There's a lot of antique-style leather-padded seating, so this looks angled towards sitting and talking, rather than being numbed by loud music. The toilets are along an internal corridor, making a partial island of the Bar, and I glimpsed a sports room further along. It looks like the building is good in cold weather, but also has parts with walls which can be opened in the Summer. Certainly worth a second etc visit.

Still one of the best pubs in Trowbridge, still has a good couple of beers on tap, still has a warm inviting vibe and great staff. It is however starting to look a little tired, furniture could use a spruce and the gents loo was basically a big puddle. It still gets my vote though when we want a beer.

Dropped in here on my way to Bath. The general manager (Tom?) was incredibly welcoming and genuinely interested in my journey - long story! I had an early dinner which was just the job and properly served according to COVID regulations. Tom went out of his way to tell me the best way to get to where I needed in Bath (haven't been there either). Great local knowledge, a cheerful and hospitable staff (clearly well-led) despite all the pressures I know the hospitality industry is facing at the moment.

After enjoying a few drinks on the Wednesday the pubs reopened with friends, we all decided to call in on the Sunday 6th December. There was quite a few already in the bar, on entering I and my group of friends were refused entry because the bar manager said I had taken drugs on the previous evening. He said this out very load and heard by all the regulars and I felt totally embarrassed in front of my friends. I don’t understand how he came to this conclusion. I’m very angry about the experience and will not be taking my business back to the rose and crown again. I hope at least I would get a direct apology for the inconvenience and embarrassment caused.

We are not local so googled a place to eat close to where we were staying with decent trip advisor reviews. It was my in-laws wedding anniversary and we just wanted some nice pub grub in a homely setting. The pub exterior and interior is lovely; a modern twist but also keeping a warm pub like feeling! The gent at the bar was really friendly and drinks where served promptly; after deciding what we wanted (there where 11 of us, pre booked over a month before arrival) we ordered at the bar; one of our party ordered steak.....these had sold out.....opted for the pie.....this was sold out; no drama, she opted for the fish and chips; all done! After 45 minutes one member of our party got their nachos......10 minutes later, we where told that there where no sausage rolls so 2 people had to reorder (and given a complimentary drink which was nice) the food after this came out in dribs and drabs the last of which was the fish and chips which came out over an hour after the first person was served! Most of the food was fine, hot and good size portions; the chips however where dry and tasted like they had been cooked and. Reheated and the garlic bread was renamed by my 11 year old son as oil bread....there was no garlic on it!!!! It was really disappointing from start to finish but the poor girl in the kitchen was cooking and serving and obviously just couldn’t cope. We where given a bottle of Prosecco as a apology but to be honest everyone had had enough by this point and just wanted to leave! We found the comical side of it all and it didn’t spoil our day but I definitely wouldn’t go back in a hurry!

Visited the Rose and Crown for a meal last night . Altogether there were 6 of us. It was busy when we walked in and stayed busy all night . We have continued to use this pub for many years since the days of John and Mary , and watched all the changes that have taken place .It has so much history within the town. There is a new chef , Hamish. The food was great, good choices. We all had starters, which looked and tasted lovely. I had steak , as did 3 others. All cooked perfectly , nice chips etc. The atmosphere was lively . All the bar staff are friendly , nothing too much trouble ! Hamish came to our table to check all was ok, and introduce himself . a nice personal touch ! We all had a great night ! Thank you !

The roasts were ok but the puddings were so disappointing that I don’t think we’ll be back. The server over-sold the ‘special’ which was a white chocolate bread and butter pudding. It was awful - cold (you’d have thought she might have mentioned that), a watery berry compote and no crème anglaise as promised. The second, a cheesecake was only average. The chef obviously has skills but why try to mess about with the puddings (deconstructing cheesecake and serving solid cold B&B pud) The second Butcombe pub in a row that has been a disappointment so probably best not to try another.
