We booked a 3 night stay at the Sign of the Angel in April for a stay in September (14th-17th), received the email confirming our reservation. After a busy day we arrived at the Sign of the Angel, only to find they said they had no booking, I showed the emails & the receptionist even found the emails on there system, but no booking & all rooms unavailable. The manager was nowhere to be found & the receptionist unable to reach him, I can’t fault Maddie on reception as she was really apologetic & even tried to find us alternative accommodation. We were told that there had been a system issue & our booking had been cancelled, we didn’t receive an email of the cancellation & I find it hard to believe of a system issue as they also said it was manually cancelled. So an awful & upsetting experience for our first visit to the Cotswolds & I don’t feel a free coffee & bottle of wine covers what was clearly there fault. We did manage to find an AirBnB for our stay. So if you do book the sign of the angel for a stay be warned & also ring before you go to ensure they have your booking & not cancelled it

Beautiful 15th-century pub. However, the room we were seated in lacked the atmosphere you would expect from such a place. The food was average at best, but the prices were quite high. I would definitely not return here for the food.

Today I visited the Sign of the Angel pub in Lacock and was thrilled with the experience. This charming pub, located in the picturesque village of Lacock, is not only a piece of living history but also offers a warm welcome and a unique atmosphere. I ordered some fries, a tea and a juice, and was very satisfied with the quality and taste of everything I tasted. The service was excellent and the setting, with its characteristic wooden structure, made my visit truly special. An unmissable place, both for Harry Potter lovers and for those looking for a good meal in an enchanting English-style environment!

Very, very poor. Our food arrived overcooked but almost cold, and a very meagre portion. Waiter didn't ask how our food was, which is usually telling in itself. When we did tell him, his reaction was to tell us that wasn't normally what people siad- and did absolutely nothing about it. I'm sure this place has enough tourists passing through that they don't need to care whether people come back or not, maybe that's what keeps them afloat. There is far better to be had in the village. My advice is go elsewhere and avoid disappointment.

We stayed for a meal. It is a very beautiful pub with a stream down the bottom of the garden that you can sit right next to. The food was excellent and we had great service. However, they decided to add a 10% service charge without asking/telling us. They also didn't show us the bill before paying and we had to come inside to pay. The prices are already a little high, but I didn't want to make my partner uncomfortable by going back to ask for the service charge to be removed. I'm glad l've learnt about service charges and this pub was great, just make sure you remove the automatic service charge as tips should be optional.

It makes me very sad to write this review. I LOVE the Sign of the Angel. I have stayed several times and a high point was always the imaginative menu and the delicious food. I was really looking forward to introducing my brother who was visiting from America. We were met with the hotel’s usual charm and our rooms were quirky and delightful as usual. It was the dinner that was the let down. We had a chat with the chef and he recommended several of his favourite dishes. I’m afraid the report that everything we tried was poor. The bread was stale. The lamb was tasteless and the lamb ball was greasy. My beef was overcooked and tough….I didn’t eat it and sent the plate back. The waitress was very apologetic. I’m sorry to say that I doubt I’ll be back unless the menu returns to its very high standard.

I wanted a light lunch and ordered a Focaccia, Chicken, Salad sandwich. It was expensive, OK, but dreadful. Stale Focaccia, soaked in oil to soften it. My error was not to send it back after first taste but was with friends who had chosen the restaurant so did not want to cause a fuss. Serving staff were pleasant if embarrassed at the complaint. In the event however all 4 of us were very dissatisfied with the fayre.

The garden setting is lovely with pretty flowers, a peaceful stream and birdsong. In addition to the lovely garden, the Triple cooked fries and fresh tea (both mint and Earl Grey) were nice. Unfortunately, my friend and I found it very expensive for the meagre portion sizes and as friendly as they were, the service was lacking. When my elderly friend commented to the serving staff that her plaice was only 3 bites, the member of staff’s comment was “fish has gone up in price” to which my friend replied “and so have your prices!” To her credit, the server immediately went to the kitchen and came back with a far more acceptable meal. A big guy would have walked out of there still hungry. I ordered the vegan burger which, according to the menu, included beets, falafel, humous and harissa. When I said I didn’t want the brioche bun, the server looked baffled and said he didn’t think that was possible as the kitchen wouldn’t do any swaps! Huh?? This really did confuse them and the kitchen neglected to include any of the accompaniments. 🤦🏽♀️ Needless to say, we were amused that such a simple request could confuse them so. In the end, it was a lot of money for what we got and both walked out hungry. We won’t be rushing back.

Unfortunately our experience wasn’t great, maybe this wasn’t on the staff but I’m going to rate based on my overall experience. We as a couple had Sunday lunch in one of their rooms that was empty except for one other family - so there was no atmosphere to enjoy. And this family chose to have their kids watching peppa pig at full volume. And were very loud in general as though they were enjoying themselves at home vs in public. The staff said they couldn’t move us. The food was ok, not amazing, but we just had to eat as fast as we could and leave.

Beautiful pub, we were seated in front of a roaring log fire which kept the room so warm on a cold February eve. Food was beautifully presented, lots of options to choose from on the menu. Only disappointment was that they had ran out of the cheesecake and we weren't notified of this when choosing our desserts. Lovely staff who were welcoming and friendly and a good choice of wines. Definitely a special occasion placed to dine as it isn't cheap, we also loved there was no music being played in the pub. Instead it was the crackle of the fire and people chatting in the background which made a lovely atmosphere.

Don’t waste your money - rude staff who don’t care if you have a terrible visit. The room was FREEZING despite asking for a extra heater the noisy little floor fan just dried out the air and took the worst chill off but it was bone chillingly cold. And considering this was a birthday / anniversary gift it wasn't much fun sleeping with our jumpers, socks n hats on!! It’s an old building and thick walls so not sure why it was absolutely freezing possible it was unused for several days and had got ‘cold cold’…. Mattress was very very firm so not comfortable at all :( . The room was a lot smaller than photos suggested I think they used a wide lens in adverts. There was no tv which we didn’t notice untill we were laying in bed at 3am unable to sleep. There was no spare blankets :( Headboard loose so rattled everytime we turned over....truly an utterly miserable night! Breakfast was below average. Poached eggs slightly undercooked so snotty, mushrooms undercooked and a bit cold. Tea was in a pot so we both got one cup drunk before it stewed so much it was undrinkable. Over all a very disappointing night exacerbated by tiredness from the cold room, not the cosy romantic night we have hoped for. I think they spend a lot of time making it LOOK nice and not much time actually making sure it IS nice. I have NEVER been in such a cold hotel before. TBH we would not have said anything BUT…when I was at checkout and I was asked if I had a nice stay I said quietly ‘’tbh we were freezing and didn’t sleep well’ and I could not believe the immediate sarcastic eye roll !! as if to say ‘’oh here we go’ and the woman immediately went on the defensive. I was shocked. And very annoyed. I never asked for any money off nor a discount I just wanted to let them know it was miserable cold night for us, however because of the immediate unprofessional reaction from that woman I don’t care who knows how rubbish it was. So here we are now. Letting everyone know because she couldn’t keep her bad mood to herself and be more professional. Be warned that looking pretty doesn't always mean anything. And at £130 I feel ripped off. Discounted off £185 BTW... avoid.

Food was out of this world, proper flavoursome and great quality. We got the angel board and as two people who are not fans of soup, it was the best part along with the house made bread. We have eaten at the Sign of the Angel pre covid during the winter months a d love the atmosphere and good.On looking as we passed by we noticed they were serving afternoon tea in the garden so tried our luck getting a table. What a wonderful experience, lovely setting and friendly and welcoming staff, went out of her way to get us a table. We enjoyed a lovely fun, vibrant and relaxing atmosphere with a great afternoon tea. We opted to have one savoury and one sweet to get the benefit of both the tasty cheese scones and the lovely fruity ones! It was busy but well managed and friendly service with a smile. Visited during the “eat out, help out”. Setting was lovely and they had obviously taken measures to space people out. The food was “ok”, not “outstanding” or if I’m honest “good”. Price of the food was ridiculously expensive against the quality of what came. Much more expensive than their menu on the website. I would suspect they had increased their prices to make the most of the “eat out, help out” Overall disappointed as we had heard such good things from a while ago.

I know times are difficult at the moment but completely soul-less atmosphere no background music you could hear a pin drop everyone whispering. I was positioned next to a roasting fire and was not only melting but came away smelling of awful fire smoke in my hair and clothing. I did ask to move but was flatly refused because of covid rules. The food being just mediocre we therefore decided not to waste any more money on desserts.

Although having lived in Bradford on Avon for over 30 years, we had never visited the Sign of the Angel until today. We have seriously missed out. We were there to celebrate my birthday and every attention was paid to the current Covid situation, with tables well spaced and the usual sanitizers in place, with a lovely log fire in the background. We had a lovely guy looking after us - sadly, I didn’t get his name, but he supports Arsenal! Nothing was too much trouble for him. Lovely two nights spent in this wonderful old building. The meal on the first night was outstanding: the food sublime, the portions large and the young lad who served us was excellent. The following morning’s breakfast was excellent! The second evening’s meal, although good, was not as good as the previous night. I had the same main course and it certainly wasn’t as plentiful. That said, I still enjoyed it. The bedroom we had was nice but would have benefited enormously from two comfy lounging chairs rather than the two rather austere upright, armless chairs that were in the room. For various reasons we haven't eaten here for some time but with friends visiting and who fondly remembered the last time we took them to the Angel we booked again for dinner. I had booked a table for the 4 of us and whilst I parked the car (it was a very wet evening) my wife and 2 friends entered to be told that we had a booked a table for only 2! Anyway there was an empty table for 4 -the only one spare so quite a coincidence. Despite our wet coats there was no offer to hang these so they remained behind our chairs. Our drinks order was promptly taken by a very pleasant waiter and quickly arrived. Our food order was then taken - my friend and I ordering soup but our wives decided not to have starters. Eventually the soup arrived and it was delicious but it should have been accompanied by "house baked bread" but this did not appear. I asked a different waiter about the bread and he said that this would be extra but when I pointed out that it was part of the soup course he promised to ask the chef. Much later with our soup eaten the "house baked bread " appeared. There was one plate with a small piece of flavoured bread and another plate with a thin slice of white commercial looking bread. Both accompanied by rock hard butter. We did eat the flavoured bread but certainly not the sliced white!Time went on and we were then given what appeared to be a lamb based roll with mint jus - very tasty but why 3 plates for 4 people? After nearly an hour the main courses arrived - in fairness 3 were fine but the other lacked substance and flavour.During this long wait for our mains a man in a pink shirt (the manager?) was walking around but made no effort to ask about our experience. With only about 8 tables in the restaurant it couldn't have been that much of a challenge! We avoided any puddings as, from our experience with the wait for our mains, we were afraid we might be breaching the 10 pm deadline after arriving at 7.30 so had a quick coffee and left. This is quite an expensive restaurant; it has so much potential given its character but the service is mixed and this must be the responsibility of the management.Don't think we will return - such a shame......

I booked a table to celebrate a special birthday a couple of weeks in advance, just to be sure I could definitely secure a spot. We travelled an hour to get to the restaurant on my birthday, and Sign of The Angel had no record of my booking and told me they were fully booked. I explained that we had travelled an hour and it was a special birthday and they reluctantly agreed to accommodate us in the garden. We were given a free bottle of champagne (it was my birthday and I don't actually drink alcohol, but the rest of the table appreciated this) and a starter to share. The food was also delicious when it eventually arrived. That being said, unfortunately this did basically ruin a special milestone birthday for me. It was cold and dark in the garden and although we tried to make the best of it, it really wasn't a great experience overall. A bottle of champagne and a starter did not make up for this when our bill came to over £200 and a 12.5% service charge was automatically added, which was laughable but I didn't have the energy to dispute this by the end of the night.Such a shame as we were all so looking forward to this celebratory meal that we had gone to some effort to make. I felt more could have been done to rectify the situation too - inadequate lighting in the garden and no blankets offered did not help, along with aforementioned 12.5% service charge added and slow service; at one point we felt forgotten about, sat on our own in the pitch black garden. Not good enough Sign of The Angel.

Have been eating at The Angel every so often for 20 years now and must say that for the last 2 or 3 visits there has been a drop in standards. My wife and I had dinner recently and Im sad to say that things have not improved. The welcome was fine and our orders taken but after about 20 minutes were informed that our choice of starters were not available. Apparently the scallops were not uo to standard. We chose another starter and were served promptly. Things went downhill further and waited a long time till receiving our main course, a total of 90 mins from arriving. Then, the young waiter asked if we would like knives and forks!!!My wife should have had dauphinois potatoes but got one small potato, the portions were small and the chard was uncooked.Shame, we used to love going to The Angel when visiting Lacock but wont return, the food nor the service justify the prices.

My chef friends and I were visiting Lacock this weekend and delighted to find that there was a table available at this atmospheric restaurant with its appealing menu. Unfortunately, our impressions changed almost from the moment after we were guided to our seats. The servers are based in another room to where any of the diners are and, when they did come into our section, it was to bring something to another table and then leave immediately without making eye contact or asking if we needed anything. When my friend eventually got up to find someone and ask if we could order, she was told the server wasn't looking after our table but the 'male" server was. What must have been the male server did come bustling through the room once, but avoided any contact with us. After another wait, a sweet young lady came over to take our order and our hopes for a great meal went up again. When it came came after another not insubstantial wait for a cold prawn dish, it was perfectly press pleasant but in no way memorable. Another long wait and we were presented with our mains. Once I'd gone over to request the additional cutlery we needed, my flat iron stake was certainly tasty and cooked the way I requested, but the sides looked and tasted reheated and definitely lacked seasoning. My chef friend had to get a server to find out if she could get the rest of the onion bhaji burger fillers mentioned on the menu but not in evidence on her plate. These came pretty swiftly but the sauce was too watery to put into the burger. She managed to get halfway through but wasn't really enjoying it so then gave up. Being a professional chef, she obviously has high standards that weren't met in this case.I'd been planning on getting an enticing-sounding white chocolate fondant but decided it wouldn't be worth the wait as, even with the 'male server' and another very pleasant lady coming in and out to help other tables, our now discarded mains plates were firmly left untouched on our table with no-one enquiring if we wanted a dessert menu or the bill. After a good 15+ minutes of hopefully waiting to get noticed and trying to attract a server's attention, my friend once again got up to ask if we had to pay at the server station, or if they came to our table. She was told they would come and, after a while, our make server brought the bill slip but had to go back for the card machine. By this stage we really wanted and needed to get out of there so when he disinterestedly asked after our meal, we did the British thing of muttering it had been fine and skedaddled out of there.Very disappointed in a place that has great promise and seemed to have enough staff for the numbers of tables we could see.

The sun was beating down but the four of us were in idyllic cool under the shade of specimen trees, with the shallow river trinkling merrily alongside us. Ice-cold drinks were promptly delivered by the friendly and efficient staff as we picked our choices from the set daily menu and waited for the food. Ah, the food! Our starters were both imaginative and beautifully presented - absolutely top marks there to the chefs. The theme continued with main courses while the third-course cheese board was a paragon of its breed. The wine list was comprehensive and by no means over-priced, and the Covid precautions were subtle and reassuring. All in all a lovely a special experience which we look forward to repeating, whatever the weather.

Our first visit to SOTA and we were delighted with the quality of the food and the service provided. The outside space was also lovely and social distancing measures felt proportionate and safe. All this with added bonus of a 50% discount under the Eat Out scheme. The greatest compliment I can pay is that we would have been very happy to pay the non-discounted price for the quality of the food served. We will return.

As locals and frequent visitors, we were surprised to be greeted in such an unwelcome manner, not a smile in sight, although the waitress was friendly. We were further disappointed with the fish and triple cooked chips which were soggy and burnt. We appreciate that we were getting the meal 50% cheaper ( which won’t affect their profits) but didn’t expect a 50% drop in standards. We may give this a miss for a while.

Sat out in the beautiful garden for a socially distanced (Covid 19) lunch. The food was delicious, we had two Angel Boards, sharing as many options as possible. The Fish Goujons were excellent. The lady who appeared to be the owner, and a Ellie who took took our payment were welcoming and attentive. Otherwise the service lacked a little panache. A small area for improvement in an otherwise excellent recommendation.

Unfortunately the service lets this place down. Foods amazing though. Waiter told us it’s a fine dining establishment. Service is not up to the standard of a fine dining establishment!

Fabulous meal tonight. We both had a fillet steak, which was delicious. It came with leek dauphinois and baby courgette, which was a nice change from the run of the mill veg. Great value with the’Eat out to help out’ scheme. Highly recommend.

We went for lunch today as a family and wow, we were not disappointed. We cannot believe we have walked past this restaurant many times on visits to Lacock. Our lunch was fabulous and such a great varied menu. The restaurant has worked hard to make everywhere safe during these difficult times. This is the only the second time we have eaten out since the lockdown in March. We sat in their sunny garden and enjoyed drinks, lunch and the irresistible puddings. Service was really friendly and most welcoming. Such a wonderful place to enjoy with the family. We will be back on our next visit to Lacock. Thank you.

I presume it's because they have just reopened, but the quality of the food was not good, the chicken salad starter appeared to have been sourced from Sainsbury's and the reduction of port in the main was akin to liquid marmite. All in all distinctly underwhelming particularly bearing in mind the Government is paying half the bill.

The food was good, but the restaurant did lack some ambience. It would benefit from some softer lighting and candles on the table.

A beautiful setting for a summer’s evening dinner. Their garden is beautiful and we were lucky enough for it to be warm enough to sit outside to eat. The service was incredible, with friendly staff who were happy to chat but also incredibly accommodating. The food was delicious, the highlight being the gin cured salmon. We’ve already booked the next time we’re going to visit. Just a lovely experience all round, they have managed to cater for social distancing and still make the atmosphere special. A special thanks to Kate and Ash for making it an incredible evening. Thank you!

Nice pub in the centre of Lacock. Booked a table in advance due to COVID restrictions. Dog-friendly inside, and was the only pub open in the area during the time. Nice atmosphere in the pub/restaurant, although felt the Fish & Chips was either over priced or the portion was too small/limited for the cost

Really pleased with our wedding anniversary dinner on Monday night; service was a little slow to start, but unsurprising given there were only 2 wait staff and for one, it was her first night. However, everything improved. The food was as lovely as it always is, which again improved with each course and the little touches are appreciated; the amuse bouche, the palate cleanser between courses etc. Very friendly staff and it's a place we always book when we want something a little more upmarket and local. A nice menu that doesn't overwhelm you with too much choice. They stick to locally sourced produce and the outcome is first class. My only constructive feedback is not everyone wants meat with every course and whilst the chef was happy to remove the bacon bits from the starter and the ham from the main, he did say he was only able to do this as they were relatively quiet. As a pescatarian, the menu would have been much more limited if the chef hadn't been so flexible, so it might be nice to have a specific fish-only dish, other than the usual salmon, as found on every other menu (we have this at home a lot, so wanted something different whilst out). But overall, still a definite 10/10 and I'd definitely recommend it.

We visited today, but won’t return in a hurry! We had 3 course Sunday lunch. The service was very very slow. We waited well over half an hour between each course. Tables of other customers who came in after us were served and finished way before our table. The meat was very poor quality - two lamb and two beef. Very fatty and full of gristle. Such a disappointment as we were all so looking forward to a lovely meal now lockdown is relaxed.

We booked 1 night in this hotel with dinner. We had stayed here 2 years ago and found our visit excellent. We were not disappointed this time either, despite the new rules around COVID.We had a friendly welcome and lovely afternoon in the beer garden. The service was friendly and efficient. Our room was comfortable and surroundings were perfect. Cleaning was evident and they maintained a respectful social distance with hand gel available. The staff went the extra mile in the evening for dinner, arranging their tasting menu for us with matched wines with short notice. We were served by an excellent waitress (sorry we didin't get her name), she was knowledgable and professional and made the whole evening very enjoyable.Breakfast was also tasty.thank you for a well deserved first break post COVID, everything felt almost normal again!

I’d been wanting to visit Sign of the Angel for some time, after looking at the menu and being tempted by the dishes on offer. I decided to book to celebrate getting a new job and I was not disappointed. On arrival the staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us ( I visited with two friends). Lacock is a very pretty village and the building itself is really ornate, so the food needed to be something that little bit special and it certainly was!I started off with the Smoked King Prawn, as I was intrigued by the accompaniments ( crepe, cucumber tartare etc). It was light, fresh and zesty, a very different way to start a meal.Others in my party had the Savory Cheesecake and the Soup, both of which were enjoyed and we all commented on how nice it was to find a selection of out of the ordinary starters. My main course ( of Guinea Fowl) was succulent and the Chorizo stuffing and smoked garlic mashed potatoes gave it a filling and comforting edge.We didn’t have desert, as the meal was quite filling but there is a good selection.During the meal, our waiter was friendly and attentive but not overbearing, which is exactly the style of service we wanted. We were able to enjoy our meal and take our time but they were there if we needed anything. Overall, a lovely way to celebrate. We will be returning!

Well, what a strange experience! The manager is very odd and could do with looking up the word hospitality! He seems not bothered by anything and totally disinterested in his customers, almost like the customers are an annoyance to him. It was a shame that there was a power cut whilst we were there, which meant we couldn't eat in the restaurant, but the managers' behaviour in response was just bizarre. The rooms are nice, cute and cosy, just what we were after. But beware room no.2 is very noisy and sits above the restaurant, which would usually be fine but in this instance the manager was up until 3 am chatting by the fire! Noise carries like you're sat next to someone. I'm sure others could have great experiences here, but ours was pretty poor!

A winters Sunday walk in Lacock around the Abbey and the grounds and through the beautiful village of Lacock is one of my favourites - but I always leave it too late for making arrangements for family lunch together; especially when there are 9 of us. I nearly left it too late this time as well but on the Saturday tried to book across the internet - although it was not possible to get a table for 9 I did get 2 tables - one for 5 and one for 4 at slightly staggered times. Imagine my delight on the Saturday evening to get a phonetical from the restaurant to double check arrangements and on finding I hadn't made a mistake to offer to get me a table for 9 - it was the first indication of outstanding service.
