Wonderful restaurant and hotel! The room had tons of charms, while still having updated amenities that made it incredibly comfortable to stay. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast, dinner, and drinks were all top notch. Only potential downside of the hotel is the odd layout and low door frames (due to the age of the building) - watch your head!

Came across this guest house and tea room by lucky accident. The food and drinks were excellent. One of my family requires a gluten-free diet and the staff here were knowledgeable and very helpful in understanding the gluten free request and were able to provide everything required. If you are in Lacock you must ensure a visit to this establishment.

Avoid this place at all costs. I was told that the restaurant is not a café and that we had to order a full meal and a drink. A friend of mine, who doesn't drink coffee or tea, was told she had to order water. I found the staff to be rude and taking advantage of visitors. We chose to stay polite and not leave for another restaurant, but it was a disappointing experience.

Had been recommended for Sunday lunch and our visit did not disappoint. Staff were welcoming, atmosphere was relaxing, and the food was as good as expected. Between us we had steak, fish, and a vegetarian Wellington, all of which were cooked to perfection. Guys, look after Ruby - you’ve got a good one there! Communicated info about the dishes, drinks, and history of the pub very well. Look no further than this place if you’re in Lacock. Just mind your head if you’re tall!

My husband and I visited while we were going to see Lacock Abbey, mistakenly thinking that we would get better food than at the National Trust cafe. We opted for a bowl of soup each which we were told was "curried root vegetable". It was thin, tasteless and almost inedible and came with two tiny fingers of bread (which had a cake consistency but thankfully wasn't sweet). They were so small that the chunk of butter that came with them was almost bigger! Truly dreadful. The waitress came and asked if everything was alright and I told her that the soup was tasteless. To be fair, she did offer to get us something else but as we had already waited quite a while and wanted to get the the Abbey, we told her not to bother but to pass our feedback on to the kitchen. I hope she did. Incidentally, the portion was so small that when the bill came I asked the waitress "if that was a bowl, how small would a mug have been?" and she brought out a tea cup - which would hold barely a taste! The thing that really irked me (apart from paying £8.50 each for this meagre, tasteless lunch) was that the pub is undoubtedly used a lot by foreign tourists. I can't imagine what they would think. As someone who makes both bread and soup myself, I know how cheaply it can be done with a much better result. The pub could afford to be much more generous with their portion sizes (and hopefully get a better chef - who evidently didn't taste the soup!) but are clearly just ripping people off because they can.

Lovely old inn in lovely old town, everything dating back to before Columbus discovered a new world. Walked in, sat down, broke the chair. Well, my son is a big bloke, I'm a big bloke. The chairs are perhaps a bit less than sturdy. Waiter whisked it away and we gingerly sat down again. We went for the three starters plus bread and olives as a light lunch. Pork terrine Fish bites Sumac squid All very good. A very nice low alcohol cider (I'm driving) I went to find the loo - it's upstairs, and a bit of a fierce staircase. I actually had my back to the proper staircase and went up what must have been the servants stair. I dare say if you had restricted mobility the ladies could be used. Unusually I had cash , but they prefer you to pay with the card. Not a problem for me, but I was a bit surprised

The goats cheese salad was so small for a main and was £15. I telephoned to say I believe I was charged for the main but received a starter. The girl I spoke to said she would call/email me back to check. She did not do this and I feel very much as though she did not believe me or simply could not be bothered to ring. It’s very dear for the portion sizes and not value for money, we didn’t even get walnuts with the dish as specified. I expected the girl Maddie to ring back and even rang back to say a similar review to mine was also on the website from August. I will call again as it’s important I am offered an explanation but it really does feel as though the pub does not care and is not interested in feedback that involves complaints.

As a tour guide I regularly bring guests in over the year, several times a week in the summer months, but Sunday lunch with friends has made me reconsider. My partner found two aluminium-strands in her meal, or rather had to pull them out of her mouth. To me, they looked like theyd come from a scourer but as SOTA told us they dont use pan-scourers it was presumed theyd come from foil off the meat They were promptly whisked away and the owner offered my partner a free dessert (which she didnt want) so that was that... The kids who work here are amazing and do a tough job, and were tipped accordingly, but the proprietor really dealt with this in a dismissive manner. Not Good Enough. Youve lost a customer

I was really looking forward to staying here and eating in the restaurant. However, my wife caught flu and we asked if we could rearrange for another date after Christmas. Initially I was told yes, and we agreed on a revised date in January. Then minutes later, I had a call back to be told this was not possible and the room must be paid for in full, even though we could not stay there. So please check the cancellation arrangements before staying here, we paid £185 for a room we never even saw and we won’t be going back.

Really, really disappointed with the service this evening. As a Lacock resident, I come here often bringing visiting friends and family for meals which have always been exceptional. We arrived at 6pm, and I gave them a quick call just to check if we could reserve a table for 2, to which I was told no, as they were closed…I questioned this, as their usual closing time (and as advertised) is 8pm, to which I was then told they only had one table available instead. I said that’s not a problem, as we were informed the kitchen was closed so were just going to have drinks. Upon arrival, and much to my disappointment, the pub was practically empty aside from a couple of tables eating. I felt incredibly disheartened after being lied to on the phone. Nevertheless, we ordered our drinks and stated it a shame that no food was available, which is when we overheard the table next to us ordering dessert, which would have been absolutely fine to us and nice if it was offered. I then asked if we could order, to which I was told the cheese wasn’t available… This has been my favourite pub for over 10 years, and I have spent thousands on meals in that time. Unfortunately, unless the service drastically changes I will no longer be bringing my family and friends to visit. I genuinely feel really sad to be writing this review as a long standing customer who’s only ever had positive things to say, the way I was made to feel this evening was totally unacceptable.

My husband and I went for a meal at the Sign of the Angel on a particularly cold night. There was a cozy fire in the restaurant and it wasn't long before we warmed up. The waitress was friendly and welcoming. The meal was really good quality - we had the curried vegetable soup and the lobster bisque. Both were excellent, full of flavour and a good quantity. We had the chicken and leek pie and the Parsnip, mushroom and leek Wellington. The Wellington came with greens, mash, pureed carrot and a delicious gravy. Lots of different textures, and very tasty. My husband said his was a "proper pie". Given the prices for ordinary meals in ordinary pubs these days, we felt this was actually good value.

We truly enjoyed our dinner at Sign of the Angel. We arrived a bit early for dinner service, so we decided to wait in the back garden and enjoy a drink. Maraya, our waitress, welcomed us, brought our drinks, and let us know when our table was ready. Once inside the dining area, we were served by Darren, who was friendly and helpful. The interior was very cozy and charming, and the food was excellent. We shared the calamari, followed by the shepherd’s pie, which was both hearty and delicious. And of course, we saved room for a wonderful apple crumble. We really enjoyed our evening there and would recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality meal in a cozy setting.

Should be renamed sign of the devil. Appalling service. We got there with a booking to be informed that the chef "was leaving " so there were only sandwiches available and some light bites. We ordered a sausage roll for one adult and came a kid's portion in a kid's tiny plate (almost a miniature). When we said it was small their reply was "it's a light bite"- if that it the case it should be charged as such. They charged £8 for that! They also had the nerve to send us the bill with their service charge included for obtaining no service and no food. The wait was Appalling as there were hardly any people there. To top things we wanted to pay cash but they don't accept cash because "they need to go to the bank". Absolutely shameless, ridiculous, overpriced and awful. We went to the Sign of the Angel as a family for our daughters 21st birthday and had a wonderful evening. The food was delicious and served promptly. We were seated near the fire, as I had asked when booking, which was set in a huge old fire place. I had mentioned that we were celebrating a 21st when I rang days before, which someone had obviously made a note of, as both waitresses went out of their way to acknowledge this. They wished our daughter a Happy Birthday when we first arrived, brought out complementary snacks before we ordered, then a complimentary glass of wine for my daughter with the main course, accompanied by a little noticeboard to place on the table, wishing her a Happy 21st Birthday. They even made the final course special by adding a lit candle into her pudding and writing Happy Birthday in chocolate source around the edge of the plate. The pub is a lovely old character building and the food great, but what really made the evening special was the 2 young ladies serving us and their professional and friendly demeanour.

We booked a 3 night stay at the Sign of the Angel in April for a stay in September (14th-17th), received the email confirming our reservation. After a busy day we arrived at the Sign of the Angel, only to find they said they had no booking, I showed the emails & the receptionist even found the emails on there system, but no booking & all rooms unavailable. The manager was nowhere to be found & the receptionist unable to reach him, I can’t fault Maddie on reception as she was really apologetic & even tried to find us alternative accommodation. We were told that there had been a system issue & our booking had been cancelled, we didn’t receive an email of the cancellation & I find it hard to believe of a system issue as they also said it was manually cancelled. So an awful & upsetting experience for our first visit to the Cotswolds & I don’t feel a free coffee & bottle of wine covers what was clearly there fault. We did manage to find an AirBnB for our stay. So if you do book the sign of the angel for a stay be warned & also ring before you go to ensure they have your booking & not cancelled it

Very, very poor. Our food arrived overcooked but almost cold, and a very meagre portion. Waiter didn't ask how our food was, which is usually telling in itself. When we did tell him, his reaction was to tell us that wasn't normally what people siad- and did absolutely nothing about it. I'm sure this place has enough tourists passing through that they don't need to care whether people come back or not, maybe that's what keeps them afloat. There is far better to be had in the village. My advice is go elsewhere and avoid disappointment.

It makes me very sad to write this review. I LOVE the Sign of the Angel. I have stayed several times and a high point was always the imaginative menu and the delicious food. I was really looking forward to introducing my brother who was visiting from America. We were met with the hotel’s usual charm and our rooms were quirky and delightful as usual. It was the dinner that was the let down. We had a chat with the chef and he recommended several of his favourite dishes. I’m afraid the report that everything we tried was poor. The bread was stale. The lamb was tasteless and the lamb ball was greasy. My beef was overcooked and tough….I didn’t eat it and sent the plate back. The waitress was very apologetic. I’m sorry to say that I doubt I’ll be back unless the menu returns to its very high standard.

The garden setting is lovely with pretty flowers, a peaceful stream and birdsong. In addition to the lovely garden, the Triple cooked fries and fresh tea (both mint and Earl Grey) were nice. Unfortunately, my friend and I found it very expensive for the meagre portion sizes and as friendly as they were, the service was lacking. When my elderly friend commented to the serving staff that her plaice was only 3 bites, the member of staff’s comment was “fish has gone up in price” to which my friend replied “and so have your prices!” To her credit, the server immediately went to the kitchen and came back with a far more acceptable meal. A big guy would have walked out of there still hungry. I ordered the vegan burger which, according to the menu, included beets, falafel, humous and harissa. When I said I didn’t want the brioche bun, the server looked baffled and said he didn’t think that was possible as the kitchen wouldn’t do any swaps! Huh?? This really did confuse them and the kitchen neglected to include any of the accompaniments. 🤦🏽♀️ Needless to say, we were amused that such a simple request could confuse them so. In the end, it was a lot of money for what we got and both walked out hungry. We won’t be rushing back.

We as a couple had Sunday lunch in one of their rooms that was empty except for one other family - so there was no atmosphere to enjoy. And this family chose to have their kids watching peppa pig at full volume. And were very loud in general as though they were enjoying themselves at home vs in public. Only disappointment was that they had ran out of the cheesecake and we weren't notified of this when choosing our desserts. Lovely staff who were welcoming and friendly and a good choice of wines. Definitely a special occasion placed to dine as it isn't cheap, we also loved there was no music being played in the pub. Don’t waste your money - rude staff who don’t care if you have a terrible visit. The room was FREEZING despite asking for a extra heater the noisy little floor fan just dried out the air and took the worst chill off but it was bone chillingly cold. And considering this was a birthday / anniversary gift it wasn't much fun sleeping with our jumpers, socks n hats on!! It’s an old building and thick walls so not sure why it was absolutely freezing possible it was unused for several days and had got ‘cold cold’…. Mattress was very very firm so not comfortable at all :( . The room was a lot smaller than photos suggested I think they used a wide lens in adverts. There was no tv which we didn’t notice untill we were laying in bed at 3am unable to sleep. There was no spare blankets :( Headboard loose so rattled everytime we turned over....truly an utterly miserable night! Breakfast was below average. Poached eggs slightly undercooked so snotty, mushrooms undercooked and a bit cold. Tea was in a pot so we both got one cup drunk before it stewed so much it was undrinkable. Over all a very disappointing night exacerbated by tiredness from the cold room, not the cosy romantic night we have hoped for. I think they spend a lot of time making it LOOK nice and not much time actually making sure it IS nice. I have NEVER been in such a cold hotel before. TBH we would not have said anything BUT…when I was at checkout and I was asked if I had a nice stay I said quietly ‘’tbh we were freezing and didn’t sleep well’ and I could not believe the immediate sarcastic eye roll !! as if to say ‘’oh here we go’ and the woman immediately went on the defensive. I was shocked. And very annoyed. I never asked for any money off nor a discount I just wanted to let them know it was miserable cold night for us, however because of the immediate unprofessional reaction from that woman I don’t care who knows how rubbish it was. So here we are now. Letting everyone know because she couldn’t keep her bad mood to herself and be more professional. Be warned that looking pretty doesn't always mean anything. And at £130 I feel ripped off. Discounted off £185 BTW... avoid.

Food was out of this world, proper flavoursome and great quality. We got the angel board and as two people who are not fans of soup, it was the best part along with the house made bread. Honestly couldn’t fault it and the pork belly was amazing. Really worth stopping and having a bite. My only minor criticism is that service was a little slow but when you got served, the guys were friendly and attentive.

Spent the afternoon wandering around Lacock on a glorious day. We have eaten at the Sign of the Angel pre covid during the winter months a d love the atmosphere and good.On looking as we passed by we noticed they were serving afternoon tea in the garden so tried our luck getting a table. What a wonderful experience, lovely setting and friendly and welcoming staff, went out of her way to get us a table. We enjoyed a lovely fun, vibrant and relaxing atmosphere with a great afternoon tea. We opted to have one savoury and one sweet to get the benefit of both the tasty cheese scones and the lovely fruity ones! It was busy but well managed and friendly service with a smile. We will be back to try dinner there soon.Great effort from the team and good to return there.

Lovely coffee and cake break in beautiful garden area. Staff could not have been more helpful, and very efficient in these Covid times. Lovely toasted teacake, with jam and butter added to the lovely garden area. Really enjoyed it, and we will return soon.

We were disappointed by our visit today. The food seems to have downhill and the service was inattentive and chaotic. There didn’t seem to be enough waiting staff working or else they just don’t work as a team. Hopefully it’s just teething problems after being shut for a while but our experience will put us off returning as it’s not cheap. The location and beer garden are lovely though.

We had such a lovely lunch and afternoon here on Saturday. Seated by a roaring fire, beautiful Christmas decorations, stunning building and really friendly and helpful staff. We have a toddler- we were brought a high chair without asking, they served him very quickly and couldn’t do enough to make our afternoon lovely. And the food was delicious. We had venison burgers and ‘Angel boards’ which had incredible mushroom soup, fresh warm bread and three English tapas style items which you can choose from a selection. All very much enjoyed. Thank you!

Every few years my wife and I return to Lacock and we have been doing so since 1969, often eating or staying at the C15 'The Sign of the Angel'. We were met at today's lunch by a roaring fire and a friendly welcome. All food in our 3-course set lunch was of outstanding quality including rabbit terrine also celeriac and apple soup starters followed by delicious salmon accompanied by samphire and a lobster sauce. Pudding was a light ginger sponge with salted caramel sauce and pear ice cream. All excellent and reasonably priced.

Visited during the “eat out, help out”. Setting was lovely and they had obviously taken measures to space people out. The food was “ok”, not “outstanding” or if I’m honest “good”. Price of the food was ridiculously expensive against the quality of what came. Much more expensive than their menu on the website. I would suspect they had increased their prices to make the most of the “eat out, help out” Overall disappointed as we had heard such good things from a while ago.

Not impressed unfortunately I found the whole experience lack lustre. From all the reviews I read I imagined the experience to be one to remember but just wished I hadn’t bothered if I’m honest. I know times are difficult at the moment but completely soul-less atmosphere no background music you could hear a pin drop everyone whispering. I was positioned next to a roasting fire and was not only melting but came away smelling of awful fire smoke in my hair and clothing. I did ask to move but was flatly refused because of covid rules. The food being just mediocre we therefore decided not to waste any more money on desserts.

This ancient building has a lot of charm and low ceilings. The starters and main courses were excellent but we found the puddings disappointing. That aside, the service was excellent, the food very good and the ambience just what we wanted. Highly recommended

Although having lived in Bradford on Avon for over 30 years, we had never visited the Sign of the Angel until today. We have seriously missed out. We were there to celebrate my birthday and every attention was paid to the current Covid situation, with tables well spaced and the usual sanitizers in place, with a lovely log fire in the background. We had a lovely guy looking after us - sadly, I didn’t get his name, but he supports Arsenal! Nothing was too much trouble for him. Our food was amazing - the standouts being the Chilli Prawn starter and the Belly Pork main course. We shall most definitely return and cannot recommend The Sign of the Angel highly enough. Bravo!

Lovely two nights spent in this wonderful old building. The meal on the first night was outstanding: the food sublime, the portions large and the young lad who served us was excellent. The following morning’s breakfast was excellent! The second evening’s meal, although good, was not as good as the previous night. I had the same main course and it certainly wasn’t as plentiful. That said, I still enjoyed it. The bedroom we had was nice but would have benefited enormously from two comfy lounging chairs rather than the two rather austere upright, armless chairs that were in the room. The bath was super: long, deep and hot! Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable break!

After arriving in Lacock at about 10am we found everywhere to be closed even the Bakery was closed at 10.30 am! so embarked on a walk around the village and via local footpaths on returning had coffee at the only very rundown cafe. We visited the Abbey and then wanted some lunch and happened upon this Public House 'The Sign of the Angel' and what a warm and friendly welcome we had even though the main restaurant was full the waitress offered a table in their Breakfast Room which we gladly accepted. We had the Fish triple fried Chips puree of Peas and a Caper sauce to die for. The portion was a sensible and perfect size all I can say is fabulous.

For various reasons we haven't eaten here for some time but with friends visiting and who fondly remembered the last time we took them to the Angel we booked again for dinner. I had booked a table for the 4 of us and whilst I parked the car (it was a very wet evening) my wife and 2 friends entered to be told that we had a booked a table for only 2! Anyway there was an empty table for 4 -the only one spare so quite a coincidence. Despite our wet coats there was no offer to hang these so they remained behind our chairs. Our drinks order was promptly taken by a very pleasant waiter and quickly arrived. Our food order was then taken - my friend and I ordering soup but our wives decided not to have starters. Eventually the soup arrived and it was delicious but it should have been accompanied by "house baked bread" but this did not appear. I asked a different waiter about the bread and he said that this would be extra but when I pointed out that it was part of the soup course he promised to ask the chef. Much later with our soup eaten the "house baked bread " appeared. There was one plate with a small piece of flavoured bread and another plate with a thin slice of white commercial looking bread. Both accompanied by rock hard butter. We did eat the flavoured bread but certainly not the sliced white!Time went on and we were then given what appeared to be a lamb based roll with mint jus - very tasty but why 3 plates for 4 people? After nearly an hour the main courses arrived - in fairness 3 were fine but the other lacked substance and flavour.During this long wait for our mains a man in a pink shirt (the manager?) was walking around but made no effort to ask about our experience. With only about 8 tables in the restaurant it couldn't have been that much of a challenge! We avoided any puddings as, from our experience with the wait for our mains, we were afraid we might be breaching the 10 pm deadline after arriving at 7.30 so had a quick coffee and left. This is quite an expensive restaurant; it has so much potential given its character but the service is mixed and this must be the responsibility of the management.Don't think we will return - such a shame......

A Medieval stone fireplace and timber beams created a great atmosphere in which we were seated with plenty of space between tables and good ventilation. I chose their signature salad dish with English charcuterie and raspberry vinagrette. We could not resist the strawberry cheesecake with walnuts and homemade mint ice cream.

Initial booking (two days in advance) was odd, the man on the phone was rude and unhelpful. But when we checked in the staff were lovely. Rooms were quirky and brilliantly laid out.Food really shone, with brilliant flavours and delicious combinations. The waiting staff were warm, engaging and really professional. Would definitely recommend and book again. Just ignore the man on the phone!

I booked a table to celebrate a special birthday a couple of weeks in advance, just to be sure I could definitely secure a spot. We travelled an hour to get to the restaurant on my birthday, and Sign of The Angel had no record of my booking and told me they were fully booked. I explained that we had travelled an hour and it was a special birthday and they reluctantly agreed to accommodate us in the garden. We were given a free bottle of champagne (it was my birthday and I don't actually drink alcohol, but the rest of the table appreciated this) and a starter to share. The food was also delicious when it eventually arrived. That being said, unfortunately this did basically ruin a special milestone birthday for me. It was cold and dark in the garden and although we tried to make the best of it, it really wasn't a great experience overall. A bottle of champagne and a starter did not make up for this when our bill came to over £200 and a 12.5% service charge was automatically added, which was laughable but I didn't have the energy to dispute this by the end of the night.Such a shame as we were all so looking forward to this celebratory meal that we had gone to some effort to make. I felt more could have been done to rectify the situation too - inadequate lighting in the garden and no blankets offered did not help, along with aforementioned 12.5% service charge added and slow service; at one point we felt forgotten about, sat on our own in the pitch black garden. Not good enough Sign of The Angel.

Had lunch here on a Friday, booked online a few days before our visit. Made welcome, social distancing well handled, the room we ate in had a lovely stone fireplace, the garden looked lovely too. We had 4 small plates each, 4 for £15 and this was ideal for lunch, a tasty variety of food. Will go again.

We went out for a family meal and although the food was nice, the portions were small and expensive, even with the government’s subsidy. Only realised after we had left that the sweet was missing the cream. The dessert was minuscule as it was and overpriced. Service was ok, but slow, and when the bill came, had to correct them on it. Not as relaxing as I had hoped, I’m afraid.

We met up as a family for the first time in almost 4 months. Welcome was good as was the staff on service..we spent over £200 ( 5 of us) on lunch and were having a fantastic time and several laughs as we were my father-in-law his 2 sons & 2 daughter-in-law sFood was delicious but!!!! I don't know what level of position the person was ( male) Came into the room we had dined it to tell us to keep the noise down!!!Well it did leave a very sad ground of family upset !!!! There was hardly any other persons there being late in the afternoon... We have been to this restaurant lots of times for family gatherings over several years but we left on a very sad note

Have been eating at The Angel every so often for 20 years now and must say that for the last 2 or 3 visits there has been a drop in standards. My wife and I had dinner recently and Im sad to say that things have not improved. The welcome was fine and our orders taken but after about 20 minutes were informed that our choice of starters were not available. Apparently the scallops were not uo to standard. We chose another starter and were served promptly. Things went downhill further and waited a long time till receiving our main course, a total of 90 mins from arriving. Then, the young waiter asked if we would like knives and forks!!!My wife should have had dauphinois potatoes but got one small potato, the portions were small and the chard was uncooked.Shame, we used to love going to The Angel when visiting Lacock but wont return, the food nor the service justify the prices.

Due to COVID restrictions we were just one of two couples in one of a number of rooms so lacking in atmosphere which was a shame but not the restaurants fault. Food was delicious and service good, special thanks to the member of staff who waited up until we left at 1 am without trying to get rid of us earlier. Lovely olde worldy building in a beautiful old village Well worth a visit.

Some classic British dishes on the menu, helpful service, and the bar (which is associated with the hotel) has plenty of beers, lagers and wine. Lots of room between the 4 to 5 tables in the main dining area, although I suspect you could eat at tables by the bar. Meanwhile, you’re in a very old stylist building within the Salisbury city centre.
