The Rose in Oxford

Llegamos a las 11: 30 ish para el desayuno. El inglés completo era una porción muy generosa y fueron capaces de ofrecer gluten libre también. Y estaba muy sabroso. El café era precioso pero el té aún mejor, supongo que anunciando desde las raíces del café. Buen servicio también.

Really disappointed how this place has changed. Being given an uncooked panini instead of a ciabatta roll and served cheap sliced toast with a small bowl of soup seemed frankly insulting.

Nipped into this cafe after visiting the botanical gardens, the atmosphere was warm and cosy. We both had a full English breakfast, it was one of the nicest breakfasts we have had out, would definitely recommend and would go back!

We didn’t sample the food but had tea. The staff were welcoming and the place was cosy. There was a great selection of teas served in teapots (the only way it should be served!). Would love to return and try the food in future.

Just had a terrible lunch at The Rose. The person with the vegan sandwich thought it was OK, everyone else thought their meals very poor;. I had the goat's cheese salad which was barely edible. A pile of soggy stirfy (where was the rocket, courgette, red onion) with a slice of goat's cheese, for over £13. Poor burger and chips. Slow service. Two bad one-course meals =+ £27.. Shocking. Never going again.

We stopped in for Brunch and received excellent service from a fantastic waiter. One of us is gluten free and the waiter really accomodated us. Good coffee and delicious food.

Had afternoon tea there and found place small and quite cramped,The cream tea was delicious although the portion of jam and cream were small and at £ 12 it is expensive A pot of speciality tea was £ 4.50 which is on the expensive side. The toilets are down a steep stairs and were not very clean standard which lets it down. Feel it gets away with high prices due to its location .

The Rose is a friendly restaurant with good tasting tea and scones. The service is excellent and the interior is nice. The taste of the black chai tea was a little bit weak at first, but when I asked for some more tea in the pot I got it. The scone was a little bit dry but tasted good as did the marmalade and clotted cream. I really liked the place.

Nice place, good food for breakfast, lunch or a tea break. Roasted vegetables salad with goat cheese was delicious, also ciabatta dishes are nice.

Had a table for one on a Saturday. Had to wait a couple of minutes for the tables to be cleared, but was seated very quickly. Had a lovely scone and lemonade, which were good. Very friendly staff who are willing to have a chat with you. I had a nice experience here.

Called in for tea and a cake to break up a trip around Oxford (our son is a Cambridge graduate and we wanted to compare). Clean, many different teas on offer. Not the cheapest slice of coffee cake but certainly home made and excellent. An interesting side is the history of businesses trading from this establishment is briefly annotated around the top of the walls, from when it was a pub in the 19th century. Worth a visit - better than a chain for sure.

Very friendly waitress slow service. Great coffee . Breakfast options minimal. There bagels with avocado really delicious. Easy location to get to . Decor minimal hard chairs for sitting

My boyfriend and I were visiting Oxford and came to The Rose for Afternoon Tea. We were super impressed with the food (the scones were delicious!) and the atmosphere of the cafe. If we visit Oxford again we will definitely be making a return visit.

Having been refused a vegetarian afternoon tea at the nearby Grand Cafe, we visited The Rose and asked for the same. They couldn’t have been more accommodating. They gave us a delicious, vegetarian afternoon tea. Everything was fresh and very tasty. The staff were lovely, cheerful and helpful, a total contrast to the Grand Cafe. Would definitely recommend.

Visitamos la semana pasada en uno de los días más calurosos del año. Había visto este lugar en línea y estaba feliz de encontrarlo abierto con espacio cuando llegamos. Una vez que se dieron cuenta del calor que hacíamos después de una hora de navegación, el personal encendió el aire acondicionado, ¡lo cual fue increíble!El restaurante es pequeño, pero han espaciado las mesas lo mejor que pueden, y una vez más los clientes entraron, colocaron carteles de reserva en las mesas junto a ellos para evitar que la gente se sentara demasiado cerca (restricciones de covid 19).Elegimos té de crema (2 bollos cada uno y té de su elección). Había muchas opciones de té y normalmente tomaba té para el desayuno, pero me encantó el menú y cómo te dio detalles sobre los diferentes tés, incluidos los que van con leche o sin beber. Elegí un té de vainilla negro y me sorprendió gratamente. Era un día muy lluvioso y mis amigos y yo estábamos buscando un lugar tranquilo para tomar una taza y ponerse al día. Aunque había pasado por este café varias veces, no había entrado hasta ahora. Tiene pequeñas mesas y sillas encantadoras con la historia del edificio pintada a lo largo del borde superior de las paredes. El personal fue muy amable y servicial como pudieron ser. Mi amigo es vegetariano con intolerancia a los lácteos, así que tuve un pequeño problema para encontrar algo que pudiera tener que comer. We had a quick lunch there this week. It was clean and the staff were friendly. The coffee wasn’t like what we expected, the food was average and the cakes were rich.

Really great place. I visit regularly and the food is always amazing. Also the atmosphere is nice and relaxed, especially when compared to some of the other, more famous, but also more overcrowded tea shops in Oxford.

När vi kom till Oxford ville vi gärna bjuda barnen (6 och 9) på afternoon tea. Vi hittade The Rose Cafe på nätet och bestämde oss för att gå dit. Vi beställde "The Rose Afternoon Tea" och blev väldigt nöjda med både mackor och kakor.

This may have been the penultimate moment of our whole UK trip: after punting on the Cherwell, STARVING, we spruced up and went to tea at The Rose Cafe. Unbelievable scones with clotted cream, finger sandwiches to die for, and, of course, the very best tea and cakes. It was so perfect, I was almost crying! (Fortunately, I managed to keep a stiff upper lip. LOL!)

Un tea time délicieusement anglais avec scones chauds et succulents, accompagnés d'une fameuse crème chantilly et de la confiture de fraises. Trop bon! Les thés (à la rose bien sûr mais aussi les classiques Oxford ou jasmin) sont parfumés à souhait.

Venue pour boire un thé et manger quelque chose de salé. Je vois que le restaurant sert une salade au saumon fumé mais aussi divers toasts. Je demande au monsieur un toast + saumon + citron qu'il me refuse au motif que ce n'est pas à la carte. Puis il refuse aussi les scrambled eggs on toast car on n'est pas le matin. Par contre, la jeune serveuse est très sympa. J'ai payé 2,99 euros pour un thé à peine chaud. Toilettes minuscules et dégoûtantes. Sur une grande avenue comme ça, ce n'est pas correct.

I enjoyed stopping in here for a bit of tea and a scone, both most delish. I had the Rose Oxford Tea and a single scone. The service is very nice. Worth a stop by, most definitely.

I had the chicken pesto ciabatta with the side salad. It was sooo good! So tasty! The salad was fresh and crunchy and the dressing was delicious! My chicken pesto was up there with one of the best sandwiches I've had!

Vine aquí con mi esposo, 2 hijos de 19 y 6 años para tomar un poco de té y pastel. Ambiente agradable, personal amable, buena ubicación para ir a la universidad y luego a la ciudad.

The overall service was great and the tea selection excellent. I well recommend the chocolate cake. The size of the slice is quite impressive and it is excellent!

Visited here after a day of extensive Christmas shopping, very ready for a break. I was delighted to be served freshly baked scones, still warm from the oven. Hands down the most delicious cream tea I’ve ever had!

I visited with two friends last week for coffee. I’d had several excellent lunches here in the past and trusted the service. When we arrived the guy handed us menus and showed us to a table. He then went back to his laptop and ignored us for about 10 minutes. I called to him saying we’d like to order , but still continued his laptop conversation with ear buds in. 5 minutes later we walked out and got coffee at Taylor’s. Disappointing

Teníamos la intención de ir al Grand Cafe cuando visitábamos Oxford por su reputación como el salón de té más antiguo del Reino Unido. Las colas eran largas, así que cruzamos la carretera hacia el Rose Cafe.

Nos lo pasamos muy bien en la cafetería de rosas y la tarta estuvo bien. Probamos el pastel de zanahoria, el pastel de chocolate y el de manzana. La manzana era mi favorita, muy sabrosa y nada seca.

Como alguien que tiene alergias a los alimentos, me frustran constantemente los hoteles, etc. que hacen sus emparedados más temprano en el día y por eso no pueden aceptar la intolerancia. Este lugar era exactamente lo contrario. Tomaron mi orden y luego hicieron los sándwiches frescos. Sí, lucharon con pasteles y bollos, pero al menos yo podía comer algo y estaba delicioso. El personal era maravilloso y sin duda volvería.

Siamo stati in Cornovaglia e devo dire che questi scones sono quelli che più si avvicinano a quelli mangiati lì. Davvero ottimi, ci siamo tornati due volte. Entrambe le volte ho avuto la sensazione fossero preparati artigianalmente. Grazie, da provare!

Visited Oxford as part of a bank holiday day trip. The Rose was our first point of call for a quick lunch 'pick me up'. In the end we settled on two cappuccinos with fresh scones with clotted cream and jam; both satisfactory, and the scones were definitely fresh. However, the service was very poor; we were kept waiting far too long to place our order, had to ask again for water after the waitress ignored the request the first time and then finally brought over 1 glass for 2 people?? Finally when trying to signal for the bill, the waitress very rudely snubbed us to serve another customer (who actually apologised on the her behalf afterwards). A really disappointing experience.

Our French visitors were keen to try all types of English fare, including an afternoon tea. They weren't disappointed with the cream tea that we each had here (£7 each for a pot of tea and two scones with jam and cream). Bamboozled by the different types of tea on offer they, like me and my hubby, went for the house black tea, which washed down nicely the warm, crumbly scones.

My partner and I just loved this place.We had some food(check the amazing pic!)and some teas.They have a good range to choose from and the prices are reasonable.Staff were smily and we didn’t wait much to get our order.Definitely we will come back!

Had the Afternoon Tea. The menu did not make it clear we could choose the cake flavor we liked. Bread on the sandwiches wasn’t white. No table linen. Scones were nice. Girl very friendly. A bit to expensive for what we got.

We went inside this small restaurant which served very good tea and scones. We could choose between a large number of teas and have our scones with good jam and cream.

I was walking on high street on sunny day last week and I saw a bored say we serve the best scones in town, and I though everyone says this to make people come in site, as a chef I know what good food is and tested, so I thought I will ask the waiter what he things about his food usually staff are trained to say there food is the best, but what I got is he explained how they make there food and they use local food and in the end he said you can be the judge of it and I was so surprised for him to say that and I asked why, and he said I been working with food and drinks for nearly 10 and one thing I can say no where around cafes in oxford can do better food the as and I am 100% sure he said, people lost the value of good food they want fast food and he said we can’t do that we can try to make fast food in a good quality so if people can’t appreciate that not much we can do.

Nos alojamos en un hotel cercano, así que este era un lugar conveniente para ir para el té. Esta fue una nueva experiencia para mi hijo adolescente pronto, y los dos estábamos muy positivo acerca de la comida (buena y abundante) y el servicio (muy amable personal). Volveremos cuando de vuelta en Oxford.

Muy rara vez dan una mala crítica pero que raramente se sintió tan frecuentado e ignorados. Recogió un folleto de excursión en autobús mientras pidiendo me dijeron una mesa no es el menú (que era consciente de que! ! Y luego completamente ignorado) por personal esperando, así que aunque la tarta no lucen atractivos no tuve oportunidad de orden. Salí y no volveremos.

Came here over Easter for a light lunch. Had the fish cake with salad and a side of chips.

Food is OK and decor pleasant but the toilets let the place down badly. In need of a serious clean up and modernising which would add another star. Stairs down to the toilets are VERY steep and not suitable for very elderly or infirm customers

Came in for breakfast and ordered poached eggs with avocado. Perhaps my expectations were too high but I didn't expect to be served two semi-cooked eggs on top of cheese on toast adorned with half-brown avocado on the side of the plate. Not the best start to the day I have to say. The waiter was very polite and courteous and I didn't have the heart to send the food back at the time.

Raving about the scones, well they are good and flavoursome but call me a pleb but real thick clotted cream and Strawberry jam makes a good scone. And you get that here good clotted cream. Very naughty tea break.

Lunch today - very good friendly service, excellent food at very reasonable prices. Would definitely go again when in Oxford.

Went to beautiful Oxford..sightseeing and shopping for my birthday. Had lunch in The Rose. Staff were lovely and very friendly, food was gorgeous. I would highly recommend it.

Recommended by our walking tour guide, this cage was very good. They fresh teas, coffee and delightful cakes - a bit expensive at £4.25 a slice but well worth it. It proved to be a delightful stop off. Good service. Elegant/comfy surroundings

Claramente una prima en Oxford encontramos este establecimiento donde nos sentamos en la única mesa externa. El almuerzo era bueno y los tés servidos con muy buena.

I had a cream tea, my wife had a a cake. The scones were fresh and very good; my wife's cake was moist and tasty. This a pleasant and unpretentious place which, unlike some other places in Oxford that serve afternoon tea, is not supercutesy.

Popped in for dinner and a cuppa... We were served the wrong teas, or rather the right teas but to the wrong person, unfortunately only one of us takes milk and sugar and guess which one was poured first... Told the waitress, who after some persuasion finally brought a clean cup, but absolutely no offer of a fresh, correct pot...The omelettes were passable but the accompanying salad was drowned in vinaigrette and the "triple cooked chips " were more trice dunked in warm oil, certainly not the best!

Dropped in on a drizzly Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. Turned away newcomers.Service was very prompt and the tea and scones were excellent. Easy to see why they were so busy. Definitely stop here for a mid-afternoon break.

We've eaten here several times and the food has been very good but we tried it yesterday and it was disappointing. We both ordered theCream Tea Special but when it came the cream was yellow and tasted like butter. We queried this and were told it was cream and it was that colour was because it was hot. That was worrying because cream should surely be kept in a fridge. Needless to say we didn't eat the cream. The cakes, coffee for me and apple for my sister were dry and tasteless. To be fair the sandwiches side salad and tea were good. It certainly wasn't worth 15.00 each.

Stopped off for lunch and a brew. Staff were friendly and helpful, answering our queries. We both had broccoli & courgette soup, very tasty, served with a warm ciabatta. My wife had a pot of tea and I had coffee both of which were very good.

When tea arrived in England there was a glut of milk available from the farmers and a glut of sugar available from the plantations in the Caribbean. Hence, a gullible public was persuaded that tea should be taken with milk and sugar.A visit to The Rose provides the chance to taste speciality teas as they SHOULD be drunk - and at very reasonable prices. In the summer, especially, try the subtle and refreshing flavour of some white tea.More standard fare is also on offer - at reasonable prices and with friendly service.

The Rose is a beautiful cafe! The service is prompt and the staff very friendly! It has a beautiful view of the university examination schools and great decor! The food and tea is fantastic too!

Ikzelf wou nu toch wel zeker 1x thee gedronken hebben in zo'n theehuisje in hét land van de thee terwijl mijn gezelschap wel een stukje taart lustte. We kwamen onderweg dit restaurant tegen, waar er nog net 1 tafeltje vrij was. Het is er nogal klein, maar door een spiegel achteraan heb je dat niet meteen door.Mijn thee viel eerlijk gezegd wat tegen. Vond het eigenlijk echt niet lekker, maar mijn gezelschap was best tevreden over haar stukje taart. Vriendelijke bediening, maar wel niet zo goedkoop.

This is one of the cheaper options for tea in Oxford. I got the cream tea special. The salad was pretty good, and I loved the dressing, but the sandwiches were only ok. The scones were good, but the orange cake was very dry. Also, it is a very small restaurant, so you can't have tea with too many people. If you are looking for a cheaper tea place in Oxford for yourself and someone else, then try the Rose.

Popped in part way through a visit to the Botanics. It was well worth the walk back. The service was good, a really lovely friendly waitress. We just wanted coffee and cake. The coffee was really good and the cakes were so moist and tasty. A very attractive cafe. The only problem is you have to go down quite steep stairs to use the toilets and they are a tight fit, however it is still definitely worth a visit. RECOMMENDED

We went to Oxford for the day and after having walked around sightseeing we found this lovely cafe which served some nice cakes, assorted teas and coffee it was very quaint

We arrived very late in the afternoon when other cafe's had stopped serving lunch so we were grateful that The Rose would still serve hot food. I chose a mushroom risotto which was incredibly salty it almost made my eyes water! Generally the waiting time for risotto is fairly long to cook the rice, the meal at the café was served fairly quickly so obviously pre cooked.

Really enjoyed our visit, enhanced by the window seats on a sunny day. I had the full English equivalent which though not massive (I have a big appetite so had to increase with add-ons) was clearly made with high quality ingredients. My partner went with the scones and they were fresh and filling. House tea a really nice blend so overall I'd come here again and recommend to others.

Having just gone off the overall 4/5 star review on here I was sadly disappointed by the afternoon tea I had here on Saturday 18th March 2017.Service was prompt but the waiter was not the friendliest and the afternoon tea itself was below average. The scones, although definitely fresh, were very 'floury' in taste, the finger sandwiches were bland and the 'moist lemon cake' was underwhelming.I would say this is probably more like a 3 star venue for afternoon tea and given this I do not think the price of £14.85 is justified.
