The Roof Top Bar is a top end establishment, yet recently it is anything but, broken and dirty toilets, dirty tables, untidy chairs, staff talking rather than making the place tidy and acceptable.

You can’t really fault the views. The building interior is beautifully designed (cool, if you like) and very clean. The staff quite simply must receive zero training whatsoever. We were 1 of maybe 5 tables in the entire building and there were 8 members of staff grouped together chatting around the entrance, they were literally being paid to socialise with each other. I had to help myself to menus. We then had to awkwardly try and attract the attention of anyone working there to get 2 drinks and a couple of snacks. Service was incredibly slow and 0 stars for attentiveness. The snacks are poor in choice and quality and hilariously over priced. £4.50 for a “bowl” of crisps… said bowl was the equivalent to half a pack of crisps. Worth popping in to take in the views, then leaving without ordering anything.

My husband and I a lovely couple of hours here on Sunday with friends, the cocktails were delicious - especially the Gin & Cucumber one and the Vodka Blush . . . both FAR too drinkable!! The staff were perfectly attentive and friendly but we never felt rushed. (I'm not sure whether they have sharpened up because of previous reviews but our experience was really enjoyable.) The rooftop is a lovely space and the views are fantastic, a 360 degree view of Cambridge's city centre. I was worried because it was a little chilly on Sunday but blankets were laid out on the sofas and it was great to spend some time outside before we went to dinner. I would definitely recommend and will be back whenever the sun comes out!

Overpriced and flavourless drinks. They serve you supermarket juice and call it a mocktail.

Lived in Cambridge for over two years now, and IF you’re lucky enough to be present when it’s open, you’ll be received by staff that you could swear are paid more to dislike you, and a drink that’s double what it should cost.

Would not recommend it. The staff were extremely rude especially whoever seemed to be in charge. They looked and treated us as tho we were a hindrance even tho we were paying £15 for below-average cocktails. We asked about food and were told sarcastically that it wasn't free. Stay away!

Luego está el menú de bebidas, que es bastante extenso, pero prueba a pedir un cóctel/bebida que no esté en el menú, Dry Martini/Negroni, por ejemplo, y bueno... . no puedes, ya que no hacen "Stir downs", una regla extraña dado que este es un hotel con un bar en la planta baja. . Todo en una decepción. .

Been here a few times, location and views are lovely day or night. Quite pricey, but you dont have to pay to go up there so can justify price of cocktails. Dark and stormy cocktails were a bit of a let down, but was a cold evening so provide blankets to stay warm which is a nice bonus to continue enjoying your time there.

Had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The food was great and the view of the city was beyond compare.

The Varsity Hotel's rooftop bar does what it says on the tin. Nice views over Cambridge from the rooftop and a drinks menu. But our cocktails were average and rather watered down. It felt like a bit of a tourist trap. Staff were welcoming but could have been more attentive. It was late afternoon and they ran out of most nibbles. The cocktails are actually better at the Six Restaurant one floor below, which still has the nice view but without the outside terrace.

The rooftop bar here is incredible - a fantastic way to see the whole of Cambridge and especially amazing when the sun is shining! The cocktails were delicious and the staff were so helpful and kind, they really looked after us on our visit to this city. Will definitely be coming here again next time we're visiting!

Had a lovely evening meal and drinks on the rooftop terrace which has some unique and fantastic views over the city, very friendly, great service and fantastic location to explore Cambridge. Parked car at Castle Hill car park which is a short walk from the hotel, will definately stay again.

Awful service, waited ages to be served and was only served when I asked if we could be. The waiter was not very friendly and seemed put out that I was asking for a drink. It was not busy, but there were half a dozen or so members of staff having a little chat behind the bar. Not great. Too expensive for what it was.

Underwhelming and expensive experience. Disappointing cocktails -£15 each. We asked if we could get a bite to eat only to be old that we couldn’t, they didn’t do food. But then we were told they did burgers. They had a menu of about 7 choices including a couple of wraps - we were told however that anything wrap or anything chicken wasn’t available so we had limited choice. Literally a burger with zero fries or garnish £15!!! Have to admit it was tasty but not £15 tasty. A 330ml bottle Corona £8.50. Needless to say we didn’t stay long. Also, after being told initially there was no food we spotted a few tables with small bowls of olives. All a bit odd.

Really not good. Arrived for drinks. Tables and chairs all average. Charging top prices for below average quality, care and delivery. Nothing refined or sense of quality at all. Ordered passion fruit martini. It may have well come from a shop purchased can. Poor quality, poor presentation and the worse I have had. Too thin, no velvety layer to the top and shot of Prosecco not even served on the side. It’s the customers choice whether it is poured in or drink in between the cocktail. When advising of the substandard cocktail, challenged and made to feel very uncomfortable backing up the poor standard snd quality overall. From reading reviews, clearly defensive and inability to act on feedback. So, if you want to charge this for a cocktail, every cocktail needs to be perfect. So unlike mine, not a quarter of a passion fruit but half, a glass that is well chilled or frozen beforehand (get a freezer to store the glasses in) ,get shot glasses for the Prosecco and follow the recipe. It’s not hard. I’m sorry, but this really was a terrible all round experience. Well below any standard I have experienced in a long time. Perhaps also get a canopy to shield the bar staff. Maybe heat exhaustion was to blame but, shouldn’t have to affect customers experience with attitude too.

Great view overlooking Cambridge. Very hot day and there were no place’s to sit with any shade. Over priced drinks. £12.50 for a glass of rose… defiantly paying more for the view than the actual drink. Staff friendly and polite. Limited food menu. Probably wouldn’t return now we have been but glad we did.

Varsity Rooftop Bar. Great location, dire service. So disappointing that staff showed litte customer interest. Waited 30 mins to get 2 glasses of premium priced warm wine. No apology, no interest on this occasion. So disappointing.

Weather great, location great, views OK. Service slow but OK. Drinks and nibbles pricy. Generally a good experience. On leaving we were prevented from taking a photo of the surrounding rooftops by an arrogant, impertinent waiter. Will not return, and will advise all friends the same.

Went to the rooftop bar for some drinks yesterday evening. It was not super busy except 1 large group and some tables of 2,3 and 4. We got sat down and had our drinks order taken after 5 minutes. We ordered 2 gin and tonics which took over 15 minutes to be brought to us which was very slow considering they are easy to make and it was not busy. A couple that arrived after us got their drinks before us. We got sat at the edge of the bar and my partner wanted to move into the middle, when we asked, the gentleman was very blunt and rude and told us that we can move for now but if it gets busy we would need to move. He wasn't polite when he said this and considering it was already nearly 8 pm and there was at least 7 or 8 other free tables, he could've just said yes with a smile. Disappointing considering we paid £34 for 2 drinks. Feels like we paid for the view not the service.

A great view of Cambridge. However, the overall experience was disappointing.... After queuing for some time, we were placed at some chairs which lacked any cushions. Very uncomfortable and it took 3-4 requests to the staff for them to bring any more out. Given how expensive the drinks are I would have expected the staff to be a little more concerned about the comfort of their customers. They didn't seem very interested. Secondly, the long island ice tea was flavourless. Only go for the view I'd say and then buy the cheapest drink you can.

Visited on Sunday 11th September 2022 at the end of a day out to Cambridge. Only came for a drink on the rooftop terrace bar. Decent view but a bit pushy waiters. Over-priced drinks but it is what it is for the view/experience.

We visited in summer 22. Long queue, overpriced drinks, waited to be seved for ages and then for our drinks to arrive - even more. At another table a couple were complaining because they'd been waiting for their for for an hour. Tables very close to each other. Just a ploy to charche as much as possible for nothing special. The drink quolity was good hence 2 stars.

The view was fairly good, and particularly unique due to the usual building height restrictions in Cambridge, but the food was expensive and unremarkable. This is somewhat offset by the free access to the terrace.

Have visited the terrace bar many times and decided to take visiting family over the bank holiday weekend. Service was patchy, food extras disappointing (scraps of crisps), and drinks were A) forgotten and B) served in glasses that were too small to accommodate the constituent parts (which - in the case of Aperol Spritz at £14 a go is just not good enough). None of these are unresolvable, but at premium prices one expects (and usually gets) better service/experience here.

Really nice looking place, amazing views and tasty cocktails, unfortunately I was really disappointed about menu... on website it looks like you have plenty of choice want do you want to order but when we showed up menu had only 4 positions and Cheeseburgers that we ordered weren’t tasty... cheese wasn’t melted at all and it was almost no sauce inside, also there was no fries, just a burger, no possibility to order any sides... I thought I will be able to eat some delicious food but I didn’t get any information about simpler menu, there wasn’t any info downstairs, next to entrance or anywhere...

My husband and I were recommended for a drink at the rooftop bar, unfortunately it was raining. We decided to see if we could get a table in the busy cocktail SIX bar. The staff managed to find us a table and we were told we had 45 mins for a drink as they were very busy, this was fine. About 20 mins later a member of staff came up and said we had to order food asap if we wanted food we were confused because we were initially told we could only have a drink. Felt a bit uncomfortable after. Was busy given the current situation but one to judge yourself I guess. I had a cocktail which didn't look like much given that it cost over £10 and sugar was not stirred just left at the bottom of glass.

After a summer of mixed weather & zero travel we thought we'd revisit this local hotspot. The prices are something out of St Tropez but the friendly staff, views & fantastic Mediterranean ambiance makes it a fun evening nontheless, we'll definitely be back!

Pedí un whisky Jack Daniels, pedí amablemente un vaso limpio porque el anterior tenía lápiz labial. On a nice day, this is an absolutely glorious spot with incredible views of Cambridge. No better spot for that in Cambridge. That said, it comes with a VERY hefty price tag - seriously. Food (if any) mediocre at best (advice: eat somewhere else) and limited choice of drinks.So don’t come here for the drinks, come here for the views. And consider the prices to include an extra view-fee. A non-optional one.

We went for dinner and the food was 'ok' (in the sense Nandos or pizza hut is ok) but the service was slow, and they charged £3.80 for a 200ml coke which is outrageous. I assume they are charging you for the view, which you can't see at night. Not one I'd recommend and fell short of the reviews I read beforehand.

Gorgeous view up on roof terrace. Had a good cocktail with almond syrup mai tai. Service really slow and inattentive. When leaving at top of flight stairs and loads of people coming up with no room to go yet varsity staff were like just go down the stairs - how when no hand rail on left hand side and can’t even get down the stairs due to influx of people coming up!! It’s only the view that saves it

Como todos los restaurantes de Cambridge ,el personal encantador y súper amables, cuantos restaurantes de Barcelona el personal deberían de aprender , la comida muy sencilla por su precio , los gin tónic , muy buenos con un buen surtido de ginebras, bajo mi punto de vista y gusto ,no es un sitio para comer , yo diría que si no hace frío , vale la pena subir a la terraza y tomar una copa , romántico lo es.El pirata de Barcelona

I had friends visiting the area and decided to bring them to the rooftop for a few drinks. Aside from their cocktails being over priced and very weak it was the rudeness of the staff that made the experience so unpleasant. When the waiter brought over my fruit juice he did not mention he’d undone the cap and placed it sitting back on top of the bottle so when it was lifted to be shaken (as the bottle states) it went everywhere! I mentioned to one of the managers it would be advisable to mention the top is not secure (or simply decant the juice for you), and he shrugged. I am 6 months pregnant and was left to clean up our table, clothes and my ruined handbag myself whilst they all watched. Not one offer of assistance, or to bring another drink because I was wearing most of mine :-(

We tried the Roof Terrace for drinks before dinner, and was not disappointed. The staff was friendly, the cocktails were good and the view is absolutely fantastic.

We have been looking forward to a sunny day to have a few drinks and lunch at the Rooftop bar, but I have never been more disappointed. My husband and I had a drink and ordered the chicken wrap from menu, which cost £13 each. Tasted like it was made days in advance. Chicken was dry and barely any in the wrap, a few scrapes of lettuce, thats it. The views are incredible, but what a waste of money on food!

Sadly this fairly interesting location is let down by very poor service and a somewhat dismissive, perfunctory attitude. Bottled drinks were served without glasses - why, and when the food finally arrived after quite a wait the waiter came up to our table and just grunted here. There are lots of staff (we counted 9) but most of the time they are not waiting on tables but chatting and not doing that much. Given the prices and number of staff available one should expect more. We ordered a steak (THE MINUTE STEAK BBQ SWISS ROLL) which is basically a piece of steak in a bread roll - not that inventive. We would not return.

After lunch gin and tonics in the sun with 2 friends after a surprise birthday lunch. The sun was out, the view is amazing. Great way to pass the afternoon

The Roof Terrace is the bar with the best views in Cambridge and is particularly beautiful on a warm summer evening. Be careful, though, as it can get very busy in summer and service can be proportionally slow.

Este es un gran bar con fantásticas vistas sobre la ciudad de Cambridge. No te lo puedes perder en una soleada tarde de agosto cuando tratas de impresionar a tu esposa por 31 años. Ambos amamos un G&T; generoso, por lo que un par de dobles parecía un buen lugar para comenzar. La ginebra del mes parecía interesante, ¿por qué no? Excepto que agregue un par de aguas tónicas Fever Tree y obtendrá 33 billetes por dos bebidas.

Small queue to get access at peak time on Saturday evening Fairly pricey cocktails (£13.50) but fair enough given the location Blankets provided as got a bit chilly. Recommend.

I was part of a group of hens who wanted to go for a drink on the rooftop. We were not drunk, loud, abrasive and carrying offensive balloons and inflatables etc. All well dress, in appropriate footwear, mixture of ages including mums, all we had on to suggest we were a hen group was sashes.

We started badly when our pre booked table wasn't ready, so went up onto the terrace for a drink. A comprehensive list of cocktails and particularly many gins and tonics, but they professed to be unable to make a straight forward dry martini. Only for us to find that this was actually available on a different list downstairs in the brasserie. Could nobody pop down a floor and get one, basic customer service?! On going to our table, we were asked to pay for the terrace drinks separately as they were unable to add it to our table. Poor start.

We visited this bar twice, the first night we had a few drinks on the terrace before having dinner on the 6th floor and the second night just drinks alone.

Popped by for a drink at lunch, extensive selection of decent drinks, great views and amazing service. It’s a lovely place to go for a drink! The BBQ food is also lush! Thoroughly recommend!

We visited the roof top bar for a pre dinner drink. Views, drinks menu and atmosphere were all lovely on a sunny Friday evening.

First time to the hotel for a drink in the roof top garden. Nice location and views with lots of nice seating areas. Drinks are a bit expensive but suppose that's what to be expected in a boutique hotel. Just a shame the staff weren't more friendly. They don't even smile. Lovely people on reception but miserable at the roof bar.

Stunning views of the city from up here and a really nice, chilled out vibe on a Saturday afternoon. Expensive and busy, but super for a special occasion.

I went with 3 friends about 7.30pm and it was fairly busy. We were placed at a table in the centre, so the view over the city was obsecured by the raised area around the edge that had people sitting at the tables. The view is impressive but not so much from the middle of the terrace.

We were lucky to visit when it was sunny and this is a great time having a few drinks, with the best views of Cambridge. Well worth a visit.

Came to Cambridge for 1 night. Decided to book ahead as the website looked great and I’d heard of the Varsity hotel and roof top bar. Sadly the weather didn’t permit so we were unable to have pre dinner drinks on the roof.

The Varsity Hotel roof top is a great place for a drink. You can not take it away from them the views are good. As for the food we had a disastrous experience. Three attempts to cook a burger and we eventually gave up. No apology, it was deducted from our bill on second attempt, but staff seemed at a loss and were all over the place. It was shocking! Sorry you deserve better but this was so disappointing and we would not go back.

Recommended to visit the rooftop bar and terrace. The gentleman at the door was lovely and very helpful (compared to London hotels!). We were quickly seated upstairs and the staff were attentive. Can’t fault the views, really nice skyline of Cambridge and the colleges.

We were attracted to the rooftop bar by signs from the riverside. The rooftop bar is comfortable and well set out with lots of seating and glass wind breaks to avoid the breeze. The views are not that great because the land is so flat but you can see the river and the bridge of sighs. The prices are slightly more expensive than other bars in the city. We enjoyed it as we like to visit these type of bars.

It’s unique, it’s special, it’s just a great place to have a drink, relax and enjoy the amazing views across Cambridge. The staff were pleasant and attentive, the choice of cocktails was excellent and it’s a great place to go before eating at SIX the restaurant below.

Only drinks, no food here, but worth it for a nice view and setting. Just had wine, but cocktails looked great if you like them. Nice furniture. Good servers.

It was gloriously warm when we ventured up-top to the roof to bar. It's well kept and safe to wonder about up there, but it was very busy. Drinks were VERY expensive. I liked the stamp art work adoring the stair-walls.

We went for lunch here recently and the bartender greeted us but was so rude, dismissive and was physically moving us out of the way. We decided to leave before even ordering.

Estoy seguro de que este hotel es excelente, aunque no me he alojado aquí, pero fui al bar de la azotea, que es muy agradable, pero me decepcionó que la vista no era el factor sorpresa. . . como el Hilton Rooftop Bar en Amsterdam. . esto es increíble. . Así que de vuelta a Cambridge. Las bebidas son muy caras y no creo que las vuelva a visitar.

Hoy fui a visitar el hermoso día soleado y el sitio web dijo que estaba abierto si hacía buen tiempo y al llegar nos dijeron que no estaba cerrado por el invierno que se abre en verano. Esto debería haber quedado claro en el sitio web, no en cómo se presenta ahora, en realidad se clasifica como publicidad falsa y como el hermoso día de San Valentín ha decepcionado enormemente

Gorgeous space with comfortable seating and a 360 view. You can get a real eel for this gorgeous city from here. Worth a visit as darkness falls.

Good view of course but completely clear screens around the edge led me to feeling an attack of vertigo coming on so we sat in the centre. It's very much a tourist magnet though on a sunny Sunday afternoon there wasn't any problem being seated. Cocktails are very good but of course they are not cheap and why should they be.

This is such a great place to relax and unwind, with delicious cocktails, wines and champagne as well as a fabulous view over Cambridge.

We came to the hotel because we have heard great things about their lunch menu. When we arrived we were seated at a lovely corner table with an amazing view. However, the service to order was quite slow, especially on such a quiet day. But saying that, I would recommend their fresh orange juice. The food was average and over priced for what it was. After waiting almost half an hour for someone to bring us the bill, I don't think I'll be returning any time soon.

The view is really nice over the city of Cambridge. They have a good choice of the drinks too. Nice place to have a drink after work.

I phoned in advance for more info and staff don’t seem to know when/if the bbq is served on the rooftop giving different answers. We arrived at 6pm and it was already finished, so we left early to find somewhere else to eat, didn’t want to go to their restaurant. There were empty seats but we were told they were reserved for hotel guests but this was pretty annoying when they stayed empty. View is obvs great but everything else is lacking...

The cocktails are made from scratch and so yummy! The staff are all so friendly and attentive (they give you blankets if its a little chilly!!). The view is breath-taking!!!!

Met a dear friend here for drinks during the August heat spell. After a cramped elevator and further stairs, we came out onto the terrace to see lovely views, afforded by the glass walls. We arrived early which was good as the place was packed by the time we were leaving. We each ordered a blueberry caipirinha. It was cram-packed with muddled limes and ice (as it should be) with just the right hint of blueberry syrup and a handful of fresh blueberries. Old friends, enjoying an excellent cocktail, in a pretty setting, overlooking beautiful Cambridge. Perfect!

Went to the roof terrace one sunny Sunday afternoon. Was a bit of a treck getting up there - 8 flights of stairs or a solitary lift (which can be a while)

I went here last night with family and friends..it’s such a lovely place with a great atmosphere and surroundings. They provide blankets and heaters due to the cold weather at night, which is a bonus. The only problem is the price of their drinks...I had a Long Island iced tea and Pimms cocktail, both tasted amazing but for £12.50 the glasses in which they came in were just not appropriate, they were average kitchen glasses and some were even warped in shaped, however some drinks like the Martini did come in a proper cocktail glass so it’s a weird one. But I had a lovely night would definitely reccomend, the staff were also very warm and welcoming.

Made to feel very unwelcome - we left without being served and went elsewhere. The views are of course excellent, but you can get similar views from the restaurant below in Six, the cafe in John Lewis or the grad union cafe on Mill lane.

Average food and drinks and absolutely horrific service! This place has so much potential but lacks good management. Quite possibly the worst service I have received at a restuarunt. Avoid!

Nice to experience a sunny afternoon on the Roof Terrace but drinks a bit pricey - Six on the floor below is better value for money...same views but via a window!

But terrible service unfortunately as we had to wait so long in order to be served. But the view of Cambridge is certainly worth going there and have a drink. We had a table without booking.

We decided to have cocktails on the roof terrace at the Varsity. Cocktail menu poor and atrocious glasses. Only one of us actually had their cocktail served in a proper cocktail glass, The others were like cheap Tesco’s glasses. The roof terrace is nice with great views of the city, thats about it. Won’t return.

Was really excited to come here for my sisters engagement party. I phoned before hand to check if I could book a table on the roof, which you can’t but I could phone on the day to check availability (also told me what was on the menu on this call). I asked if we could order food and told them it was an engagement party, they told me to phone again on the day to make sure there was space, I phoned they said there was plenty of space, so we turned up early to make sure it was nice for the engagement group, they were not friendly when we came in I was made to feel quite out of place, when getting to the rooftop bar I was then told they served no food that day... but I had phoned an hour before. The rooftop was so gorgeous and would have been perfect but I felt really let down by the staff I spoke to on the phone and those on the desk who seemed disinterested - we had to go somewhere else. Really brought down the vibe of the day. Wasn’t terrible the guy on the roof was apologetic but overall very poor but could have been perfect.

Visited with friends for cocktails. Ordered the summer time gin which came in a cheap ikea type glass and not the gin glass I would have expected. This ruined the whole experience.

Good service, great choice of cocktails and menu. Superb view from roof terrace. Friendly staff who know the best menu choices.

A lovely spot to enjoy stunning views across Cambridge. The mocktails are delicious and average price for Cambridge. Be aware though, there is no shade on the roof but there is a bar in the restaurant that also has amazing views.

Lovely place to have a drink with great views of Cambridge, however it was tarnished by a couple of arrogant/rude bar staff. Feel that when I'm paying £27 for mediocre cocktails, you should expect service with a smile!

Classy and great views of the city and in particular the river punt starting points below on Quayside - so is obvs going to be busy - Hey Ho.

El único verdadero bar de la azotea, con Cam grandes vistas de la ciudad y Jesús verde. Me voy un par de veces cada verano, cuando es el lugar perfecto para tostar una ocasión especial. La selección de cócteles es diversa y bien elaborada, con precios un poco en el lado premium, pero es una ubicación de primera. También hay una amplia variedad de vinos, champanes razonable e incluso cerveza si lo desea, pero el hecho de pedir bebidas son la verdadera atracción. La huelga del personal de un buen equilibrio entre atenta y no-agresivos.

This is the best rooftop bar in Cambridge with superb 360 degree views of the whole history city.
