The service was extremely poor. The room smelled terrible. There was a restaurant, but even if I asked the front desk to borrow a fork, they couldn't. They told me to ask the manager in the morning. Rubbish service attitude.

The whole hotel is a bit 1980s and in need of a maintenance plan, however it's not the most expensive so what did I expect. The bar however. Worst pint I've had for years, probably because the bar staff have little knowledge of what they're doing and the bar is only open from 6pm onwards even though advertised otherwise. In hot weather the adjoining conservatory make the bar an oven. Happy hour is also a joke as it's advertised between 6 and 7 but the staff charge full price and state it's only happy hour if you spend over 25£ on food. Which is different to how the happy hour flyer reads imo. Basically happy hour is a lie and it just made 2 bad pints (the replacement was just as poor) unhappy hour. In summary. Ok for a cheaper night in 1980s Cambridge but go elsewhere for drinks (and therefore food). Such a shame.

This hotel could use some tlc in maintenance but the staff are very friendly and the food very good. The continental breakfast was very extensive. It is very hot inside and there is no cooling in the form of ac. But the windows can be opened. The location is perfect. Close to the center with a bus stop practically on the doorstep, including the one for the hop-on-hop-off. Had a nice stay.

The staff were friendly but this hotel is extremely overpriced for what it is. We had no idea we'd have to pay £18 just to park our car overnight in the car park... this was so disappointing as we're customers at the hotel and had paid to stay the night yet we're penalised because we booked our hotel stay through a third party rather than directly. The breakfast was disappointing and you have to pay an extra £12 if you want a full English. We wouldn't stay here again sadly.

The hotel is well located but feels dated and tired. I could hear noise from the corridor while trying to sleep, which woke me when others returned to their rooms. The rooms and bathrooms were ok, but in need of an update. There are limited plugs in the bedroom by the bed to charge devices. Breakfast is continental - toast, cereal, croissants, ham & cheese, but they charge £12 extra for cooked, so saying breAkfast is included feels a bit disingenuous. Parking is also £18 extra if you book through a booking site rather than direct, this also felt a bit sneaky. The staff weren't overly friendly. This was fine for a night, but will probably look elsewhere next time.

On arrival I was greeted by a very impatient rude and abrupt young Asian woman that seemed to be in too much of a rush to check me in, at first she couldn’t find my name on her piece of paper which annoyed her, then alas she found me! I was there all the time. Secondly I was told the free parking was not free and I had to pay £54 for the three days because I had booked through Trivago. The hotel and room deco is very 80s but I actually didnt mind that! The room was warm, beds were made and bins emptied everyday so can’t fault that although the tv signal dropped off a few times. I would give it a 5 out of 10! The welcome was what let it down.

We needed a hotel within walking distance to Cambridge city centre, after trawling through the lists the Arundel House Hotel fitted the bill and seemed ideal, I called the hotel directly and spoke to Annette who explained in detail what was available by booking direct, the on site parking and full English breakfasts were what swung it for us so I booked a room for two nights. On arriving we parked our car and proceeded to reception but because we were too early we couldn't get into our room so asked the receptionist if we could get a coffee, within minutes between a pleasant and helpful receptionist and a similar young lady from the restaurant downstairs we were supplied with two welcoming cups of coffee, from then on the exceptional service from all the staff at the Arundel was without doubt flawless. We had evening meals in the hotel each night which were served in reasonable time, good choice, reasonably priced and very nice, then both mornings full english breakfasts which again were perfect with toast and plenty of continental variety too. The double room we were given was a good size with tea and coffee making facilities, and it overlooked the river and park, the room was warm and clean as was the shower/bathroom and linen, the bed was comfortable so no complaints about the room at all. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Arundel House Hotel and will no doubt be returning as soon as we can, hopefully bringing with us some friends.

Rooms are overpriced and would require a refurbishment to bring it up to date. Room numbers are all over the place and easy to get lost due to four buildings knocked into one. Restaurant is over priced £12.50 for a full English breakfast (local cafe was cheaper)on last night half of the continental breakfast was missing. The TV had no signal or weak signal so couldn't watch the basic channels . WiFi was very weak and kept dying out and had to reimput the password again Some staff on reception was nice e and polite while some didn't know were the rooms were.

We went back took our luggage, the receptionist was on the phone twice, then said u brought yr luggage in? she said your in the lodge, rude how she said it. We gt to the lodge at the back, room was out dated small and very hot . We picked a lovely bright room when booking,it was definitely not what we gt and that room appears on most sites and theirs. I felt because we booked via a booking site ,you are put in the lodge, the noise till midnight is awful and back on at 6am. Room needed dusting, bathroom clean, breakfast a buffet that was ok . Even though its decor is outdated, i would of still liked to be in the room that was shown on the booking site. Short distance too uni and centre which is why we booked it .

Free cooked breakfast promised in offer but not allowed when got to hotel, only continental is free. Rooms tired, dated and although cleanish not great . No lifts available and lots of stairs. Asked for adjoining rooms but they claimed they did not receive this request. Very uncomfortable bed and if u are at the back of the hotel the blowers are so noisy unable to sleep till midnight when they went off and woken by them at 6am. A strange feel to this place, hotel made up of acquired adjoining houses on a main road. Decent car park free to diners, very old fashioned style of carpets and fittings but spotlessly clean and a big conservatory and patio. Waiting staff are all neatly turned out in waistcoat uniforms. We have become regulars for lunch as the menu is good and the food is very nicely prepared and presented. No "flashy" feel here, service is slightly quirky but it works. So very close to town centre and a walk along the river and across the footbridge to get there. Average age of customers is senior, so it tends to be quiet and peaceful, no hurries.

We had informed the manager what we wanted but we never got it. 2 of the Staff barely spoke English. We never received any plates or cutlery to cut the scone.. we asked for it and it took ages to come and then they asked us how many knives we wanted?! Surely 1 each! Also the white bread was stale. The interior could also do with updating....a frayed patterned carpet and rotting windows ledges did not look good. My advice....skip it and visit elsewhere instead!

Delightful conservatory at the rear, decent bar snack type meals, nothing spectacular but quite quaintly relaxing. Short of staff at lunchtimes so service can be patchy. Strange decision to introduce parking charges (presumably to deter commuters) means that we no longer call by for a pot of tea and a tea cake. There is a strange empty feel.

Stayed at the hotel for one night only, the staff are friendly and approachable but the hotel itself needs an urgent modernisation. The decor has a 'residential home' feel and has quite a mismatch of shapes and designs (none too good). The room was in a lovely position overlooking the river but on entering felt like it was a sauna. It smelled stale and smoky without a crisp clean feel that you would expect after paying £140 room only. As the room was so hot and switching off the radiators we had to open the window for any chance of sleeping. However this meant we had to hear the traffic. My other half didn't feel too well so after dinner (not at the hotel) we attempted to have an early night.Unfortunately there was the most awful loud continuous sound, and it was just above our room. It lasted so long that I had to contact reception, who fixed the problem. Assured that it was sorted we attempted to sleep again only to be woken up again! And contacting the reception again. The walls are very thin and we could hear everything in the room next to us. The decor again in the room certainly has a lot to be desired. Towels had holes in and the curtains were able to block out some of the hotel lights outside but the room was not completely dark. On leaving this morning after nearly no sleep, or if any, pretty disturbed I thought that there might be a discount applied but no.This hotel is handy for location but if you want a modern and comfortable night sleep I wouldn't recommend it.

This place quite surprised us I must say, so much so that we have eaten there again. Both visits have been to the conservatory at the rear of the hotel where access is available from the car park which is again at the rear.Roomy and light it is on a good day a great place to take lunch although it did get a little chilly towards the end of our lunch, not quite sure but they must run some kind of heating in there. On both visits they were not over busy so we gained good attention and reasonable service, having said that it appeared that there were just two serving staff which might cause some issues if visiting during busier times. The food was good on both visits. I tried the ale pie both times and it was good, served with a selection of vegetables and mustard mash potato. Other members of our party tried a variety of options both starters, mains and puddings all with a good result.Reasonable costs and certainly from our experiences worth a visit. It was a surprise since my experience of eating in hotel restaurants has not always been good but on this occasion it certainly did not disappoint us.Toilets are an easy walk on the same level, clean and well kept. During our visit parking was not a problem, however there is little alternative parking close by so again I can imagine that there might be issues if visiting to eat during busy times.

Tonight was our first visit to this lovely restaurant, but it won't be our last I hope. Meals were delicious, fairly simple but good quality food made with care. The fudge brownie sundae was a particular delight! We sat in the conservatory area which was beauitful - plants/trees, canopies, and warm lighting. There's no getting away from the fact that dining there feels like stepping back in time, from the waiting staff's traditional outfits to the old fashioned British food (I haven't seen melon as a menu starter since I was a child in the eighties) but that is where the charm lies. Although some have commented that it is dated/needs an update, for me the tradiitonal feel is what makes this place special, especially in Cambridge with its never-ending appetite for "quirky" restaurants. Sometimes you don't want balsamic strawberries on your steak or to watch your grandparents be referred to as "guys" by the waiting staff all evening. For such times, I think Arundel House Hotel is perfect. I left feeling quite nostalgic for a time of genteel service and proper napkins - and very full from having eaten some satisfying, simple but delicious food.

Our room was spacious enough, and wonderful views...but everything is very basic and more 2star compared to other hotels we've stayed at. It was a hot day and very, very hot hotel, room and the corridor and stairways very muggy. No air con or fans in rooms, nor mini fridge. I know this will be because it's very old, possibly listed BUT...to not be able to have cold drinks in 2016 isn't 3star. However, our priority was location, and it exceeded our expectations and the staff were all lovely. £145 per room, is however, very expensive for no mod cons.

Before I went to this restaurant, I had read very mixed reviews on here. In my experience, overall this was a nice place. Not breathtaking, but nice. The staff were friendly for a hot Sunday afternoon! I went to the restaurant to celebrate my Grandparents' wedding anniversary, so we booked in advance and chose our menus beforehand. This place seems very good for events like this and seems to better suit the older generation, with the decor, atmosphere and even the style of food. We were in a separate function room which was a nice touch. We had three generations at our booking, and all seemed, for the most part, satisfied. (Those who were not satisfied are notorious within our family for being difficult in such situations, I must point out!) The staff coped well with our lack of organisation (most of us couldn't remember what we had ordered) and still managed to serve with a smile on their faces. Service was swift and professional, and I don't believe anyone had any issues with this. The place itself and it's atmosphere is rather old-fashioned, but not in an off-putting way, I personally think it is actually quite charming, traditional and nostalgic, even if the carpet and staff's waistcoats do clash a little!! Definitely more suitable for an older generation; for example I would not bring a date to this restaurant, or a meal with my friends (I am 21, so by older I mean probably 50-60+). The food is nice, well presented and tasty. We chose off a set Sunday menu. I am not vegetarian however it sounded good so I chose the Mediterranean tart as my main course, and it was a very good choice. Portion sizes are good too, I was full after the three courses. The style of the food, however, is not something I would choose over other cuisines. The menu was I suppose, British, but traditional. If that is the sort of thing you enjoy then this is a great place with a great menu!My favourite aspect of the menu was the varied wine list. There was something for everyone and at a range of prices. I chose a Reisling, which was so delicious and £18 for a bottle. This seems like a great place for family functions such as the one I was a part of. I would visit again in the same capacity, but I wouldn't go to the restaurant with my friends. The cuisine is also not the type of food I would go out for, but that is my opinion and therefore shouldn't be taken into account when deciding for yourself. Overall I am happy with the experience, so thank you Arundel House Hotel Restaurant for making my grandparents day special!

Stayed here for two nights whilst exhibiting at cereals show. I was made aware upon booking that I had been given the last available room so this may explain my slight disappointment. The room was small, single bed, tiny bathroom..all ok considering I only needed the room to sleep! Only probably was the temperature! The weather wasn't particularly warm but the room was roasting!! Others staying at the hotel said they had the same problem and it stopped a lot of us getting a good nights sleep!! Although there is a fair amount of parking due to the popularity of the hotel during this time this also proved difficult. Restaurant was extremely quiet but food was good on both evenings.

I met my Husband for lunch today in the Arundel House Hotel Conservatory. Having been here many times with colleagues, I was excited to treat Hubby to lunch, confident we would have a lovely time. Sadly my lunch- bruschetta with prawns and smoked salmon on ciabatta was disappointing. Beautiful setting, excellent waiter but food surprisingly underwhelming. Ciabatta was actually normal white bread, dripping with butter. Prawns were tasteless and the plate looked like something out of the 1970's. Strapped for time as we were on lunch break, I ate most of the meal, not wanting to make a fuss. When asked by the waiter if I had enjoyed my meal, I told him I was disappointed to which he agreed. He said he didn't think it looked great when he served it and apologised. He gave me a menu and asked if I would like to choose something else. I accepted his offer and he left me to peruse the menu. After a short time, he returned looking embarrassed to tell me that chef said I had eaten half the bread and therefore expected me to pay in full and would only offer me a slice of bread and butter....We of course paid which was always our intention but explained to the poor waiter that we are unlikely to return. Such a shame the chef had poor customer service and could learn a lot from his front of house staff. On balance, my Husband enjoyed his soup.

My friend and I regularly visit the conservatory restaurant at the Arundel House and have done so for several years. The food isn't fussy but is good quality, generous in portion size and excellent value. Favourites of ours include the cumberland sausage and mash, as well as the lasagne and homemade cheese burger. The service is efficient and always comes with a smile. We have become familiar faces to the small team of waiting staff who are always very welcoming to us and ask us how we are. If we have any special requests they will always try to accommodate them as much as possible. The setting (particularly of the conservatory) is very unique, being surrounded by glass windows and a variety of exotic plants. It has an old-world charm about it. It is especially nice on a spring / summer evening as the sun is setting. I recommend asking for the 'restaurant' menu even if you sit in the conservatoryThe Arundel house conservatory and restaurant is by no means a shining example of modernity so if you are wanting the latest in haute cuisine it is probably best to try somewhere else. If however, you are looking for a relaxing environment to have an excellent value meal then this is the place to come - give it a try...looks can be deceiving!

The service was slow and the food was poor. Two out of three steaks consisted of half fat and gristle and most of the steaks were left on the plates. The three roast dinners were served luke warm, the meat arrived a long time before the vegetables so the meal was nearly cold by the time we were able to eat it. The other two meals, the vegetarian option and gammon steak were considered okay.

I spent just 2 nights in this hotel. It was april and outside wall painting was still in process. The hotel is in good location and has relatively nice view. Reception was friendly and staffs were ok. Actually the building and room (standard single) is very classic and with narrow stairs and corridor. However, the dinning hall is large and well equiped. Only i dissapointed thing is poor breakfast.Although i had "english breakfast" which is a way better than "continental breakfast", it is still very poor. I don't want to believe this is normal in UK.All other things were acceptable and favorable.

Booked a discounted double room which turned out to be a very small garret up three flights of stairs which would be just about ok as a single. Paid a lot more to be upgraded to a 'superior' on the ground floor which was comfortable although affected by traffic noise. Breakfast was included but turned out to be 'continental ' with cooked breakfast extra. This provided a very poor choice. There was some cheese but no ham or charcuterie as you would normally expect . The only bread was poor quality sliced. The worst breakfast experience in many years. The hotel decor looks like a throw back to the 70s which perhaps explains the catering standard.

All was home made I am sure, and so much cream..... very good. Visited here for family Christmas dinner on the 20th Dec 2015.Firstly the appetisers were very poor. Nobody at the table liked the food served and the waitress asked if we enjoyed the starter, we said not really and she said nothing!Main course and desert was fine. The main issue was with the waitress. She was incredibly rude, the table was actually shocked with her attitude. She said that I ordered a certain starter that I didn't. I told her I didn't order that and she said "yes you did" I was a little annoyed and said that no in fact I had not! I thought that was it but she walked off saying in a loud voice "actually you did!" I could not believe she was actually arguing with me in front of everybody. She then proceeded to bring me my starter that i didn't order order. I live, work and eat out regularly in Cambridge, but I will never ever return here.

We had our meal in the restaurant. Well presented and acceptable in all respects (albeit we asked for a table by window when booking but were not offered one) but lacked the extra quality in style, presentation, choice and service to raise it above average. The very large conservatory in the hotel is in some respects a better location to eat (with same menu) but in the past we have experienced poor service there. I think they need to raise their game as there are so many competitors now but its good for a safe choice. I hope they succeed as it is a long established family run hotel.

Went with 8 others to celebrate a 90th birthday. To be fair the others thought the restaurant was posh and the food very good - they don't get out much bless them! My starter of meat terrine was a tasteless slab of pate served hard straight from the fridge with a watery bowl of onion marmalade. Main course was 2 filets of steamed place in what was supposed to be tomato and white wine sauce but was actually a creamy tomato sauce left so long under the warming light it had started to dry out and burn. I ate none of it. Vegetables were many but plainly boiled so flavourless. Pudding was apple pie (Brakes?) in watery and tasteless custard. I've honestly not eaten such poor food since the 1970's. All it needed was a bottle of Blue Nun to complete experience. This place is stuck in a time warp. If you like that sort of thing, and some of our party did, then go. Otherwise choose somewhere a few decades more up to date.

My wife and I recently visited this hotel restaurant for lunch and we vowed never to write it up for Tripadvisor as our experience of it had been simply too embarrassing. Given the pretensions of the over described menu the food was truly appalling. I find myself writing now on our joint behalves as a warning that every restaurant must have an 'off' day. (We hope in this particular hotel's case it doesn't apply to every day of every week!) It was all the more disappointing as we had originally intended to eat elsewhere in Cambridge. A simple, straightforward menu.... can't go wrong! My starter was a washy, anonymous vegetable soup, though my wife fared better with a dish of mussels in a cream sauce which she reported as 'unmemorable'. There was better (or worse) to come: my wife's order of Beef braised in red wine was no more note less than a shortcut of overcooked beef smothered in tomato sauce, together with an apology of an undercooked potato tower described erroneously as 'Boulangere'! My own main dish of tenderloin of pork in a guinness and mustard sauce may have started in the kitchen as a good idea, but reached the table as a rapidly cooling disaster together with an overcooked dry pat of potato and leek that no self-respecting Irishman would recognise as the classic dish 'champ'.The meal annoyed me particularly as the food was nowhere near the kind of standard that we are customarily able to provide for ourselves at home - and our embarrassment was doubled as we were entertaining a guest! Service was certainly on the slow side, and our surroundings, though reasonably pleasant, were a throwback to 1980s decor. Definitely not recommended.

The hotel is well located for visiting Cambridge City centre. Just a 10 minute walk across the park takes you into the historical and shopping areas. Of particular note is the secure car park for residents at the rear of the hotel. Accommodation is clean and comfortable although the whole place is a bit 'faded'. It's in need of a refurbishment. We were in the quiet Coach House block, well away from the traffic, but the noise of doors slamming is a problem caused by lock design. Continental breakfast was included and was fresh and well presented. The staff members were helpful and polite. A very good experience lacking only in the faded finish!

I went here with 6 other family members for dinner on a weekday evening. I ordered a pint of old speckled hen at the bar which caused the bar person some difficulty in pouring. After continually pouring out the half pint of head from the pint glass it was wiped with what I could only describe as a dirty jay cloth. We sat in a lovely conservatory with a hand full of other customers and ordered from a very good menu that was reasonably priced. The meals took over an hour to arrive during which time no one member of staff offered to refill our glasses. It appeared some were setting up for the breakfast service. The food was very good and I would recommend the Cumberland sausage with mash in a port sauce. During the meal it would have been nice to be asked if we would like any more drinks or if the food was fine but this did not happen. Instead of going to the bar after we opted to go home and have a night cap there as the lack of service made us feel unwelcome which was a real shame. I can only say the food was great but the customer service was sub-standard from what I would expect. I left feeling disappointed.

A large party (25 plus) of us went to the Arundel for our annual dinner. We paid a fixed price of £23.50 per head for three courses. The food and the service was good. At the end of the meal the waiters came round and took our orders for tea or coffee. What few people realised was that the tea/coffee was not included in the £23.50. Tea was £2.95 and coffee was £3.25 per person. The tea/coffee was not served at the dining table, but a number of jugs of coffee and pots of tea were placed in the bar together with cups and saucers for a do it yourself service. The cost of this for 25 people was about £70. A great profit margin for the Arundel, but a little sneaky and not to be admired. The bar drinks were relatively expensive and the cheapest bottle of wine was £19.50. The total cost of the evening, for my wife and I, was just under £80 for the food, a round of drinks and a bottle of wine. I will not be returning to the Arundel because there are many places around Cambridge where the food is just as good, or better, and the total evening dining experience is not as expensive.
