Under a new owner food has been abandoned, and is now more of a drinkers pub. Not a problem it’s nice to see it open, but the landlord is somewhat unkept. We’re not talking about an untucked shirt or an unpolished shoe, the man is black with dirt (mud/oil?) serving drinks. I dread to think about the hygienic stance behind the bar/cellar, consequently I shall be avoiding the pub until it goes under new management, more than likely within the next 12 months.

Great to see Hilderstone has its village pub back, long may it remain. Good selection of excellent quality well priced beers available plus an interesting range of "home made" vodkas. No pretentions, this is an unashamed drinkers pub, made for socialising whilst putting heart back into the community. Diners and their entourage will need to venture elsewhere.

Called in alone, landlord was friendly but appeared to be treading water. The beer was really excellent, so I decided to order some food. The liver and onions with bacon. Well the liver and onions were tasty however the bacon was a no show. To be fair they asked whether the food was ok and I somewhat whimpishly replied in the affirmative. Frankly I didn't have the heart to complain as I had the distinct feeling that the Landlord was already at the end of his tether and dreaming of retirement.

Took our two sons here for lunch. First time we had been to the place in twenty years. On arrival a notice informed us there was no card machine as we had visited on a d y when new management was supposed to be taking over so card machine had been taken away. Place was smaller than I remember but cosy none the less. Pleasant fella behind the bar greeted us and we ordered our drinks and food. A jacket with beans, a Gammon, a burger and cod and chips. All were presented lively and we'll cooked. No one came in while we were there which is a shame as it is worth a visit. We were told that it would be closed for three weeks as new management taking over. Will certainly visit again when open.

Whilst staying a near by b&b for a friends wedding we went into the Roebuck the night before for tea. I'm just sorry we had to get a early night we could have stayed all night especially because Wednesday is pie and quiz night! I had pie but we didn't stay for the quiz. My partner had fish and chips, we where both very pleased with our meals and the speed in which we got our food. The landlord was extremely friendly, we where a bit apprehensive before we went in two mid 20s out of towners from Manchester but he greeted us when we walked in and made us feel welcome and so did the locals. If we hadn't have had a wedding the day after we would have been back in for steak night :) big potions at small prices. A proper pub and there's not many left! :) we'll be back if we are ever in stone again

Found this lovely village pub and had lunch. Good portion size, home cooked food. Choices of salad or veg with most meals. About 8 choices on the menu all around £9.50 and a specials board with curry, baguettes etc all a little cheaper. Dogs were allowed in the pub and beer garden. If any negative comment it would be that it slightly lacked atmosphere but my visit was 1pm on a Saturday hence not many customers. Worth a visit.

My wife an I have had lunch here a few times now and, considering how far it is away from where we live, it must be something special for us to keep coming back. The food is excellent and my favourite is the chicken Kiev or the steak pie. All of the food that we have ordered or seen has been excellent all complimented by some good beers too. We have taken our dog and eaten in the bar, although there is a separate restaurant area if dogs aren't your thing. The staff have even brought a bowl of water out for the dog. The staff are real friendly and make us welcome and always check that everything is ok with what we have ordered. The Roebuck has gone straight to the top of our list of dog friendly pubs to eat in !.

Went to this pub for the first time a little while ago and I won't be going back. The steak and ale pie I had was a decent slice but was very dry inside, no "internal gravy" and the meat was hard and dry. Worst meal I have had in a long time! There was also no response from the landlord when I mentioned that the pie was VERY dry. All the meals on the menu were a little expensive for what they were. The pub itself was not particularly attractive and very cramped. Parking was virtually non-existent.

The food at the Roebuck really is gorgeous. The chips are some of the best you have ever eaten and the menu has a great selection. Service was great and staff are lovely and friendly.Only downside is that the décor inside is a little dated so I probably wouldn't take my friends because it's not a very impressive place to walk into. As this is a local pub to me, I think it would be great if it could be improved just a bit inside because I would love to recommend this to more people but wouldn't want them to be put off before they had the food, by the surroundings. Food is really, really great.

There were 7 of us in our party (8 if you include the dog). We were staying in a local B&B for a couple of nights for a wedding in Sherratt's Wood. I called the Roebuck a week or so beforehand and spoke with Daryl. Our party, including a rather large dog was no problem. Called the day before to pre-book the order and apart from some understandable confusion about starters, all looked good for our Friday evening booking. When we arrived the table was waiting and two of us had 10oz Sirloin and we are still talking about it a week later. We both had medium-rare and they were perfect. Good beer too.

Not really knowing where to go for a an evening meal as we were passing the Roebuck I remembered going there some years ago. I wasnt sure if it was going to be as good as I remembered but it was.. It was a on the hottest day in July so the place was really warm but that couldnt be helped as it was 31 degrees outside but we were welcomed by a really friendly man behind the bar. We ordered our meal and it came really quickly which was good and the starter was superb, it was really big and my husband did wonder how he was going to eat all his main meal. When the main meal arrived that was just as big (good fault) but it was excellent and we really enjoyed it, there certainly was no room for a dessert although I did notice that there was a really good choice. The waitress was a really lovely young lady, very polite and frienly. All in all we had a lovely meal, the overall experience was very pleasing and we would definitely go back there.

A group of four requiring a meal on a Monday lunchtime arrived without booking, and were warmly welcomed by the landlord. and our drinks orders were taken. We each chose a different main course; all were very tasty and also well presented; each had been cooked by a chef... as opposed to being microwaved by a kitchen operative. For the cost of a very ordinary lunch at a "chain" eatery, we all enjoyed a first class lunch, and I hope to return to the Roebuck in the not-too-distant future.I can unreservedly recommend the Roebuck for a business lunch; it is located in the village of Hilderstone. The village is currently competing in the Staffordshire Best Kept Village competition, and contains attractive floral displays; enjoy looking round the village before or after an excellent meal at the Roebuck.

Popped in as we're staying over the road and it happened to be steak night.wife had the gammon and I ordered the sirloin. They mixed up the orders and gave me the table next to us who had ordered first's ribeye - only noticed once I had started eating it! They were so apologetic to both me and the other couple it was no problem at all. The lovely girl serving us must have apologised at least three times and then the manager came out and did the same! The food was good and cooked just how I liked it - onion rings were superb! Washed it down with a nice bottle of shiraz. There was also live music at just the right volume to be background music so we could still chat

I stayed at the farm opposite whilst I was in the area for business, they recommended The Roebuck for food and an evening drink. The atmosphere was fantastic, full of nice, friendly people, and they did a lovely pint of Guinness. It was a real old fashioned, country pub. Reasonable choice on the menu, I had a lamb shank which was absolutely gorgeous, price was pretty fair too. I live in Essex, and work in London so it was a really nice change to go to a pub that differs to the sort I am used to. I cannot recommend this pub enough for food and a quiet evening drink, and would love to come back. The barman, Darryl, is a really nice guy too

Popped in with my wife for a Saturday evening meal unplanned , pleasant welcome and comfortable surroundings , the menu had reasonable selection and for the listed prices I expected some Good standard home cooked fare, we selected the home battered haddock and a steak and Stilton pie . Service was prompt but sadly the food when it arrived was not that impressive , the pie was very dry and whilst most of meat in a good sized slice was tender it was much too dry and lacking any moisture, the mash chosen was ok and bowl of carrots and broccoli fine. The fish was just tasteless and the mushy peas were garden peas crushed not proper mushy peas as a real northerner would expect. Now the chips are not home made rather fat prepared ones which again lack any flavour .it was a shame because it could have been good but in the end we decided it's unlikely we will try it again ,which our usually test , I suspect that other local places such as wayfarer offer better food at very similar prices .

We visited the Roebuck for lunch after hearing good reports about it from friends and acquaintances. The food did not disappoint and was delicious (steak and Stilton pie with home cooked chips and a lovely salad followed by a gorgeously presented and tasting cheesecake) but perhaps a little on the pricey side. Unfortunately we were the only ones in there on a Saturday afternoon which was sad to see. Perhaps some more promoting and lunchtime offers are what is required.

This quirky little pub has bags of character with a cosy log fire, spot on real ale and excellent food. My wife and I have had a meal at the Roebuck a few times in recent months and I have had a great pie (steak and stilton - yummy), a very tasty gourmet burger and one of the nicest steaks (with blue cheese sauce) I have ever had. The Landlord always has a warm welcome and the service is courteous and professional. Had a late lunch here with the family and found it very disappointing. The food was ok but we had almost finished the main course before the accompanying veg came out. We were also all served at different times and the dish I ordered (aubergine terrine ) was more like a starter, at least the large pile of chips helped to fill me up. The accompanying veg was a tiny portion when it eventually did appear, we had to share it out very carefully! We were the only customers eating too, so not sure why they struggled to get our food out at the same time. Average food and poor service. Will not be going back.

We were very late in trying to book somewhere for our wedding anniversary and everywhere we tried was fully booked. I noticed the reviews of The Roebuck on Trip Advisor so decided to give it a go. Although from the outside it looks like a small village pub, the inside is warm and welcoming. The menu was quite wide ranging with a good choice of starters and main courses.....I had the asparagus in Hollandaise sauce.....superbly fresh and well cooked as it is easy to get asparagus 'wrong'. The main courses were a challenge.....my wife made a valiant effort but could not finish hers so puddings were out of the question. We passed the Roebuck en route for our holiday home on a Sunday evening and noticed that meals were being served until 9pm 7 days a week .We rapidly unpacked and got to the Roebuck at 8.30 for a delightful traditional Sunday Roast which was delicious and accompanied by fresh vegetables; it was a lovely finish to a long drive back to Staffordshire and exciting to find a pub that had seemed abandoned for years now open and heartily in business. So much so that ,next evening, we returned with 3 of our Grandchildren to try out the "gourmet speciality burgers". Again we were delighted with the home made food the two elder boys -both hungry 'sub teenagers'-pronounced that they were the best they had had and the elder boy who's lived in Dallas Texas for the last 2 years is quite an expert on Burgers .We too rated our burgers very highly-probably the best we have had in UK and the variety of burgers was especially pleasant .My minted lamb burger featured mint just picked as we entered the restaurant it was great. My wife's steak and pancetta was equally tasty and well received Having had our stint with the children we decided to visit once more (before leaving for our home in Kent) to try the steaks on Thursday Night .We were rewarded with an excellent ribeye steak and a huge tasty gammon steak accompanied by a super Chilean Merlot-for free!.Quite the best value steak meal we have ever enjoyed in Staffordshire. As well as the very friendly attentive staff and excellent 'Pedigree' Ale on each occasion , we were further delighted on Thursday by the acoustic guitar session provided by an enthusiastic gang of local musicians who made us very welcome as did the locals in the bar .Having moved south from Staffordshire last year we were very impressed and look forward to our family's next years visit to the Region when we will make a beeline for the Pub - we have promised the kids a game of Boules in the Pub Garden then
