'Little Gem' is a phrase that could have been invented to describe The Rocket Store. We had the most memorable lunch there on Christmas Eve with beautifully cooked fresh scallops, duck, monkfish and a warm chocolate dessert afterwards, the mains accompanied by a stunningly devised plate of sprouts with walnuts and Sichuan sauce that we could happily have eaten just for itself; excellent, well-chosen wine also, and a friendly, intimate yet efficient atmosphere, both from the front of house team and the chefs, who were visible and clearly cared how their food was received. A delight, and we cannot wait to go back.

I've been a loyal customer of this restaurant for years, often visiting twice a week. It has always been my favorite place, and I was so excited to bring my vegan friend for the first time. However, this visit left me feeling deeply uncomfortable. The portions seemed noticeably smaller than usual, so we politely asked our waiter if the price remained the same when meat was removed to make dishes vegan, and whether the portions could be adjusted to reflect that. It was a reasonable and straightforward question. At some point, the chef—Ben, I believe—made a comment from the kitchen, saying, "I was trying to be nice!" in response to me declining a mocktail. The mocktail had been brought to our table without asking if I wanted it. While I appreciated the gesture, I had just finished a drink and politely declined. His tone, combined with a passive-aggressive shrug, felt defensive and hostile, making me and my friend extremely uncomfortable. In such a small dining space, this interaction felt especially unsettling, particularly as a woman being spoken to in this way by a male staff member. Other diners even turned to look, which only heightened the awkwardness. I mentioned the incident to our lovely server on the way out, who sincerely apologized (despite it not being her fault) and kindly offered to remove my drink from the bill as a courtesy. While I am happy to pay the high prices here because of the usual exceptional quality of the food and service, this experience was a stark departure from what I've come to expect. Loyal customers who raise genuine, respectful questions should be met with professionalism, not hostility or defensiveness. Sadly, this interaction overshadowed what should have been a wonderful meal, and we left earlier than planned because of it.

We went not knowing much about it, and we were blown away by the setting, the food and the service. We were immediately planning our return to the small, but perfectly set out establishment. The grilled Scollops were amazing, as were the whole sardines. Accompanied by potatoes to die for and very fresh and crunchy veg. The whole meal was a delight. The service was very good, prompt and cheerful. The chefs were very helpful and were happy to give me the hints and tips to create some of the dishes at home. Good selection of wines to go with whatever food you choose. I suppose the only thing i would want is a wider range of beers. But thats just my personal preference, and i understand that such a small place you have to be savy with storage and the variety of things. Cant recommend this place enough if you like seafood and fish. You wont be dissapointed.

Wandered past just as they were opening and seeing the menu took a seat outside without realising how busy they can be here. Booking advised! Luckily for us the table was free. An hour and a half or so later, after 5 or 6 of the small plates and excellent wine, we left contented and delighted. Amazing what they create in a tiny kitchen!

What an awesome place. Called on the off chance of a lunchtime table and got one just before they stopped serving and so glad we did. Lovely atmosphere with good conversation and a little background music. Very professional but relaxed front of house, friendly, informative and not intrusive….just right. Great G&T with Cornish tonic, which was a nice touch and given some valuable guidance on the menu choices. Every single dish was excellent and clearly prepared with the love and care the local produce deserves. I ordered 4 dishes which was just the right amount. I had the largest oyster I’ve ever eaten, beautiful flavour and well balanced with ginger and lemongrass. A lightly torched mackerel with ginger and soy…sublime. Grilled squid with fennel and chilli, perfectly cooked so beautifully soft and if I had to choose a favourite it was the most amazing plump scallop in a seaweed butter, had to ask for some bread to soak up the leftover butter…it really was that good. My wife, who is less of a fan of seafood, had an excellent and large rib eye, beautiful flavour and perfectly cooked. Diners here should be aware the dishes will come as an when they are prepared, as ours did. Looking at some previous reviews some people seem to criticise them for this but I think it’s simply down to the tiny kitchen and if anything added to the experience. What a great place, keep up the awesome work…

What a lovely place to visit .. great music and vibe on a sunny day in Boscastle. I've seen the reviews about the music but this place is small and if the music playing helps the team create the great food they do then so be it. The kitchen is within the same area you sit. We sat indoors and could watch the great work between all the team from the chefs to the servers. No its not cheap - but its fresh and prepared in front of you and the staff are totally on the ball and just lovely. The prices are clearly displayed and the team explain that its tapas so there really shouldn't be any surprises when a small portion comes out. We enjoyed it and appreciated the quality of the food. Good wine list and exceptional lemon cocktail!!

Having heard and read nothing but good reviews we were disappointed to be so underwhelmed. So sorry to say this as the concept is a good one. Interesting but over priced menu and wines. Slow service, random delivery of plates of food with long waits in between did not justify the service charge on what was an already sizeable bill.

Incredible food, fantastic flavours and also nice selection of drinks over all (shame they only have one gin). Only downside was the large wait between some of the dishes (25 minutes in one case) but I’m not marking this down despite that, as the food was well worth it, and I didn’t have this issue on my previous visit, so hopefully just a one off!

This restaurant has a very nice and welcoming vibe. The food was excellent, very flavourful and multicultural. Yes, the portions were slightly small, but the staff had told us that, and advised us to get 2-3 per person. Overall, it was delicious and we had a great time!

The food really was amazing ,quite expensive but beautiful flavours ,so well done .Portion size of sea bass starter a little mean. However service is just okay ,nothing more.If you charge these prices you need good food and good service .Our waitresses took our order and brought our food and that's all .Perhaps the owner / manager needs to invest in a little training ? Finally the volume of music way too loud .So this place could be 5 stars ,the food is 5 star but it really lacks any charm .Shame .

Let's talk about the food first. It was fantastic – everything was well-prepared and worth the price. However, the ambience left much to be desired. We were seated inside due to unpredictable weather. Although I’ve frequented this restaurant several times, both indoors and out, this visit was marred by the music. The restaurant is small, and the music was extremely loud and intrusive, significantly detracting from the enjoyment of the wonderful food and ruining our evening. The loud heavy metal music made it impossible to have any conversation, which was a major disappointment. We even resorted to using Shazam to identify each track and entertain ourselves in the absence of conversation, as did the table next to us. My son, who is a metal fan, dined there last weekend with friends and didn’t notice any metal tracks playing – but he sat outside. When I shared my newly created Shazam playlist with him, he was amazed at what had been played. The music simply wasn’t suitable for a restaurant setting. We asked the waitress to turn it down three times, and although she did, one of the kitchen staff members would turn it back up again. This back-and-forth continued throughout the meal, suggesting some disagreement among the staff, as the volume would increase if it was a song they liked. We came to The Rocket Store for a meal, not to endure the kitchen staff's choice of music at such high volume. While the food was excellent, the atmosphere was disappointing. We paid the bill without any complaint, but I sincerely hope they consider their customers' experience in the future. If heavy metal is now the genre of choice inside the restaurant, they should at least inform patrons in advance. Definitely go for the food, but be prepared to sit outside and take anything the weather may fling at you - unless you are a metal fan! Outstanding food but we hated the atmosphere.

Spontaneous visit after a sw coast path walk from Crackington Haven Whilst obvious from our attire that we had been for a long walk we were warmly welcomed and sat down for lunch. Great service/ great food and we enjoyed the ambiance. It was the first time my wife had oysters and they were delicious , needless to say she is now converted.Squid dish was amazing as was the sea bass . Our only small gripe was that sea bass dish was too small ..perhaps that’s us being greedy.

Probably the weirdest review I am ever going to write. Let’s start with the food. It’s fabulous. Go there for the food. My wife had never liked squid before, the squid dish was unbelievably good. (Good luck to other chefs trying to emulate it.) Everything else was tasty, brilliantly cooked and worth the price. Thank you. Now on to everything else. We were sat inside, 4 tables of two all sitting a metre opposite the chef. Throughout the time we were there he didn’t make eye contact with a single customer. That’s fine, but if you are on show then it’s polite to acknowledge your audience. However, the real issue for me is the music. My ears are still ringing an hour after walking up Boscastle hill. The restaurant is the size of a large shed and the music was so loud and invasive, it detracted from the wonderful food and completely ruined the meal for us. The super loud stoner music with high bass stops your guests from having a pleasant conversation about your food (or even talking to each other) which is a huge shame. It’s just not suitable for a restaurant. You are probably stopping yourself from obtaining the Michelin star you may deserve. We asked the waitress to turn it down and she said she would have to ask the chef. That doesn’t sit well as we were at The Rocket Store to eat, not be at a concert. We spent £140 and couldn’t wait to leave after an hour. We didn’t stay for desert, coffee etc. It may be excellent food, but that was poor value for what was meant to be a romantic meal in Boscastle. I wouldn’t go back. Outstanding food….. but we hated every minute. Who leaves a fine dining restaurant after an hour (and we paid the the bill without question as the food was great) unless there is something fundamentally wrong. Chef, please think of your customers.

A light lunch for £108 included 5 oysters, 1 scallop, 2 portions of mussels, 1 bread and 1 barbecue mackerel, 1 glass of rosé and 1 coke. Not a lot for £108.... The food is good but the prices don't justify it. We had a light lunch, two adults and one child and it cost £108 (one drink, a glass of rosé for £8). This bill included 5 oysters and 1 scallop which aren't cheap ingredients but the oysters were pretty small for c.£5. A single scallop was £9 (!). I know scallops are expensive but this was a bit insulting, the scallop was about a 50 pence piece in size (not one of the giant ones, which would have been more palatable for that price). One of the bigger insults though had to be the mussels. Mussels are a cheap ingredient, relatively speaking. A single portion was £15, which you might think for that price would give you a decent amount. Thank god we ordered 2 portions for ourselves and our young daughter, a portion I'd say is a child's portion at best (slight anticipation this would not satisfy her appetite). I'd say a portion had no more than 15 mussels. Again, the food was good but at this price I think restaurants need to get a bit of a reality check. Margins are tight yes, but they need to be creative in how they deliver more value in these times.

Ignore the bad reviews and pay attention. Great local and delicious food. The team in the kitchen are center stage and you are their guests - so if you’re inside expect to be joining their party and their play list. It’s fun. Not many covers so book ahead and budget £75 a head for food and wine for dinner (with service) and you’ll be very happy! Recommend the bread/tomatoes and smoked aubergine. Cheesy leeks and cabbage and the potatoes with aioli was divine. Have all the fish! Order 1 dish for 2-3 people and 2 dishes for 5-6 people. I had the skate wing and there was so much meat on it. Everything was well thought out in terms of flavour and really delicious. Please note, the food comes when it comes so be mindful your veg may come before your main fish but part of its charm is the feasting/sharing idea which is so well worn across Cornwall. We had a great time and attentive service. Also - just as an FYI - The Chapter hand wash and candle was loved by our party in the bathroom.

Top notch find! Highly recommend this gorgeous restaurant, tucked away in the beautiful fishing harbour. We didn’t book and availability was limited, I know why now. Food is delicious, a lovely selection of tapas style dishes, flavours are fresh and the selection is varied. Beautiful wines and drinks to accompany your meal with fantastic service. Ok it isn’t cheap and you pay a little more for the locally sourced food but I’m happy to support that and will definitely visit again. Highly recommended, go and visit and enjoy!

Our dining experience was an exploration of flavours, each dish carefully crafted and bursting with taste. However, while the quality of food was exceptional, the portion sizes were surprisingly modest. For a dinner for two, we found ourselves ordering seven different dishes in an attempt to sample the variety and depth the menu offered. Despite this, we were left feeling somewhat unsatisfied in terms of quantity. The need to order additional servings of bread twice was a testament to the scanty servings. While I appreciate the focus on high-quality, flavour-rich dishes, a slight increase in portion sizes could enhance the dining experience, ensuring that guests leave feeling both tantalised and content. All in all, this may not be the first choice for those with a hearty appetite

Looks great from the outside, really nicely done. Waitress was very pleasant and sat us at a table outside with a heater. Menu is on a blackboard as it changes day to day. Several items I hadn't eaten before so the sharing 'tapas' idea sounded like a good option. Drinks were ordered, a lager and wine. This was the first disappointment! A small can of 'lager' at £6.50 and a small glass of wine. The food was very tasty and cooked to perfection however as everyone else is saying the 'tapas' size dishes are not enough to feed one yet alone share. The scallop (single) at £9 is beautifully presented and tastes fantastic but it was described as large when ordering but was no bigger than a small prawn. Very much the same for all the other dishes! Described by the waitress as the 'larger' dishes lower down the menu, they weren't! Nice location, nice vibe, very tasty but beware, THE BILL will not be what you really expect for what you have just eaten. Sadly we had to stop at a garage to get a sandwich on the way home. Clearly this is all set up for a one stop gab as unless you have surplus money and eat like a mouse you wouldn't come back.

We were very lucky to have an outdoor table at this place for an impromptu lunch at Boscastle harbour. Service was relaxed, laidback but attentive. Everything on the menu looked delicious and we wished we could’ve tried it all! Alas, the prices are quite steep but it’s worth it. If you get the chance, this place is well worth visiting, especially given that Boscastle doesn’t have that many places to eat really good food.

How the team (Ryan & James) achieve what they do in such a small kitchen is mindblowing, the food is outstanding, the service brilliant and this shed should be awarded a Michelin Star. What the… Was our thoughts as we sat down to have the menu explained to us. Looking at it outside we thought “oooh, sounds like nice seafood” and at upwards of £27 per plate we thought we might get decent portion! However… once we’d been given our drinks, we were told that these were in fact “small plates” - looking at the surrounding diners, small is not the word. Microscopic! Minuscule! Invisible to the naked eye is more the vibe. They have the nerve to charge £8… PER scallop. That’s right folks, ONE single, lonely scallop. With no sides. Just a scallop. You’re not alone if you’re thinking “wtf”. Now it might just be our midlands/Yorkshire sensibilities but we weren’t about to be paying through the nose for that. We’re both reasonably high earning professionals so it’s not that the money was an issue per se, but if I’m paying that much I’d expect a portion size larger than that intended for a hamster post-gastric surgery. When we said we were just going to have drinks instead, the waitress’ mask slipped and she crossly said “oh I wish I’d known, we are only licensed to serve drinks with food”. We’d only had an elderflower pop and a coke - no alcohol in sight! Anyway, that’s how we ended up being talked into having a £4 plate of bread. Which, while it was nice enough, worked at £1 per tiny slice. It was tasty though, and to give her her due, our waitress was very nice to us while we were there. We could just tell that they were very eager for us to leave Honestly, if you do want to eat here, you probably have more money than you do sense. However, we noticed that they didn’t charge us for the bread. Whether that was a nice gesture or an oversight we don’t know, but we weren’t about to question it!

We went here on an evening in Aug. The place was pretty busy but it’s small and they had plenty of staff. The food was excellent. A lot of people on here are saying it’s expensive (ie London prices), but that’s what you get for high quality, perfectly cooked fish dishes. The food is delivered tapas style. Very relaxed and plenty of time to talk etc. The only problem (hence the ****) we had on the night was the service. Lovely staff, but seemed a bit more interested in talking and joking amongst themselves than looking after customers. It’s the annoying thing where you feel like the waiting staff are actually trying to avoid your eye. I had to call across the room and flap my arms around to get a glass of wine in the end. All is all very good though!

We knew this was going to be a real treat after seeing Rick Stein here on one of his programmes. My son's birthday is tomorrow so we headed here today to treat him as his favourite foods are fish and seafood. The waiter told us from the start it is smaller dish tapas style so we knew what to expect. We had the scallops and yes, one scallop was £8, so expensive, but you pay for the quality of sustainable hand caught scallops not trawled. The sea bass sashimi was a triumph and my son, aged 10, wolfed down his share, plus mine and could've eaten more, he loved it! The monkfish and mussels were sublime in a broth that I dipped the grilled bread in, and the grilled mackerel was perfect. The courgette dish and the grilled hispi cabbage were great accompaniments. We loved the rustic feel with the wooden benches, shared tables, and great atmosphere where we could hear the chefs singing along to the great soundtrack in the back, clearly enjoying their job. This is Michelin food that's comes at a higher price than you would normally look for on a coastal holiday visit, but yet at the same time was worth the cost by miles if you like fish and seafood. We are a pretty regular family and would never usually eat anywhere more upmarket like this, but we were made to feel very welcome.

Penryn Traditional Fish and Chip Shop – A Whale of a Meal! If you’re in Penryn and fancy fish and chips, do yourself a favor—drop everything and head straight to Penryn Traditional Fish and Chip Shop. I ordered a child’s portion of cod bites and chips for £8, expecting something small and snackable. Oh, how wrong I was! What arrived was a feast fit for Poseidon himself—four huge, golden cod pieces atop a mountain of perfectly cooked chips. The fish? Pure perfection. Crispy, golden batter encasing the flakiest, freshest cod I’ve ever had. Even 10 minutes later, back at my hotel, it was still piping hot—which, let’s be honest, is some sort of fishy sorcery. The chips? Absolute chip royalty—fluffy inside, crispy outside, and not a single dodgy “eye” staring back at me. The owner? A legend. Friendly, professional, and rightly proud that he serves proper quality cod, not some cheap knock-off fish. And to top it all off, my meal even came with a free can of pop—because nothing says “best dinner ever” like washing down a glorious meal with an ice-cold drink. Oh, and did I mention the place is spotlessly clean? Because it is. You could practically eat your fish and chips off the counter—but don’t, because they come in a perfectly good box. Final verdict? I’ll be back. Probably still working my way through this child’s portion. 11/10, would eat again!
