I was one of a group of 8 who ate at The Riverside New Year’s eve. A glass of bubbly was served on arrival followed by some bread and olives. From the special set menu i had selected the crab tart to start and then the fillet steak cooked blue and finally a baileys bread and butter pudding with banana trifle . All washed down with plenty of Tribute Ale. Overall this was the best meal i have had in this country for a long time. it’s nice to see a chef know exactly how to serve a blue steak..service was excellent too so thank you to everyone at the Riverside. His Lordship awards you 5 stars

Cooked frozen food. Dry bread rolls. Sad vegan options. Bagged salad. Sauces in packets. All a bit dry and disappointing really. This said we were warmly welcomed and we had a nice view of the river

Visited midweek for a late lunch in September. We hadn't booked and had a dog with us, but we felt very welcome. There were even bowls and water available for dogs to use. We ordered using the kiosk, and food and drink arrived quickly. The Baked Brie could have done with being warmed for a bit longer as it was not gooey as expected, but the chilli squid bites and scones were lovely. We loved the outside seating area too, so pretty next to the river.

We were staying in Torquay but decided to drive to a couple of our favourite places in Cornwall. The first to Bude, around an hour and a half from where we were staying. Our plans ... row along the river (did this on our first holiday together 40 years ago and have since experienced this with our children). After a Cornish pasty ... mmm ... we left Bude for Boscastle (20 mimute drive). We've visited Boscastle, many times, as a couple and then with our family. Simply a delightful place! Knew exactly where to go for our cream tea - yes here! The young chap that welcomed us couldn't have been more helpful. He so politely asked whether we wanted to eat inside or outside - we opted for outside and over the bridge. He kindly explained the new ordering service - 'touch screen' - that worked perfectly! After a short while, our order was delivered to us. The scones were huge so I could only manage one of the two. There's only one thing we would've preferred, that being, the cream could have been softer; the scones were so fresh they were just crumbling as we tried to spread it. I personally, would have liked a little more of the strawberry jam! The views were just as we remember ... simply beautiful! Whats not to like, the late afternoon sunshine and the rippling sound of the water ... amazing. Thank you to the staff that welcomed and served us! Just one more stop, Boscastle Pottery - we've been collecting pieces over several year and yes, I bought another piece!! Do walk along the river to the coast ... a beautiful walk. Thank you so much for a lovely welcome - to all the staff that served us here! 😊

The two shot cappuccino was weaker than a kitten and the hot chocolate was just powder with water added. At 3.75 and 3.85 this was appalling. Response was ‘sorry about that, it’s the machine that makes it’. Think I’d go elsewhere for a decent coffee/hot chocolate. Tbf, the food looked pretty good.

We had booked for Sunday as it seemed to be the only place in the area to offer a carvery. Well it was the strangest ‘carvery’ ever - although the meat was carved in front of you, the usual option of helping yourself to vegetables was not. The veg was dished up as well & when asked if a little more cauliflower cheese would be possible (which incidentally was served with a VERY small spoon) the reply was ‘no as it’s the most expensive part of the meal’!! Well I don’t know where the meat is bought from that makes it cheaper than a bit of cauliflower & some cheese. Despite the fact that it would probably have been better to just bring the food out & list as a roast dinner, it was good food but just not what is expected at a carvery.

On holiday in Boscastle and we were looking forward to dinner in a restaurant that had such a fabulous location but what a disappointment this turned out to be. The staff, the interior and the location are all lovely but the food was very poor and extremely overpriced. I ordered Cock and Bull the description of which sounded enticing- strips of sirloin steak and chicken fried in a sauce made with brandy and peppercorns served with roasted vegetables. I envisaged a delicious stroganoff style sauce. How wrong I was. The steak strips were tough, the chicken over-cooked and the roasted vegetables were very obviously from a bag of frozen winter vegetables. The horseradish mash was the best the best item in the meal but the fact that the whole meal was served swimming in a dark brown, highly peppered gravy made it look more like a factory canteen lunch than dinner in a supposed fine dining establishment. My friend’s meal was even more disappointing. She ordered a trio of Cornish fish which at £19.95 was not exactly cheap. It looked very unappetising as it was served on a thin, watery looking liquid which was supposed to be a veloute of lemon, leek and fennel. She said it was bland, tasteless and really quite unpleasant. Some of the fish was chewy, the skin was soggy and inedible. For the price, this dish in particular was appalling. We decided to have a dessert (my friend was still ravenous) and we both ordered apple and plum tart which should have been served with ice cream. We both asked if the accompaniment could be changed - I preferred custard sauce and my friend wanted clotted cream. The waitress said that would be fine but when we looked at the bill before paying, we were a little peeved to see that we had been charged an extra £1 for clotted cream instead of ice cream. Sure, it is only a small sum but somehow it seemed like the final insult after a poor quality, over-priced meal. I expressed my surprise at the extra charge and the member of staff who took the payment apologised and assured us that the charge should not have been made. She took the cost of one dessert off the bill which we did appreciate. It was such a shame that what looked to be such a lovely venue is serving such poor quality, badly cooked food.

I hate to write a negative review because we enjoyed our meal here, the setting was lovely and the staff were very friendly, however the food was just hugely overpriced for what it was. We had olives and bread to start which were tasty but were nearly £8 for some olives that looked like they came out of a jar and a single bread roll. We then had some brie filo pastries which were nice but look like they could have been frozen / brought in and just fried. I then had steak and chips for main course which cost £22. Again was okay but steak was under seasoned and the chips looked like they were frozen, not home cooked. I think I probably could have got better for cheaper at either of the great pubs we ate at on other nights during our visit. Overall we paid £80 for a two course meal for two and two beers each which I would be happy to pay usually but this really should have cost closer to £60 for the quality of food received. I hope the owners take this on board and either start cooking more of their own food, or make the prices cheaper as it could clearly be a very nice restaurant.

We came here whilst in Boscastle for two nights. Would perhaps tone the lighting down a bit as it felt a little like a school canteen. However...in fairness that's intended as constructive feedback rather than criticism. The staff are all lovely with the waitress in particular being cheerful, knowledgeable and helpful. The chef knows their onions and the food was perfect in taste, presentation and sufficiency. The salmon on ginger and chilli noodles was lovely. They have a good, well priced wine list and we had a great bottle of Tribu Malbec. Ate elsewhere during our stay in Boscastle and this was definitely the best restaurant we tried. (out of 2)Will definitely be back.

Working well with COVID to provide friendly and effective service, this was quite a lot better than I expected from some previous reviews. Fair glass of house Sauvignon Blanc served as small measure as requested: I applaud this, as many places only offer medium or large. Scallops with bacon and black pudding were perfectly cooked to my taste, and the hake main was definitely fresh with just a hint of heat in the bean and tomato cassoulet that was part of the ensemble.Only minor quibble is that the room was a bit chilly, but it was a cold damp evening.

Having eaten here before on many occasions I was looking forward to lunch here this time round. I had heard that this place had recently been taken over so was looking forward to see if the same high standards had also crossed over to the new owners. The expereince with service was great, the staff were all very friendly and polite, this I can not fault at all. The food sadly was, well not the same experince at all. I ordered the burger and when it arrived I first thought, oooh this looks good but that was actually short lived. The chips looked and tasted like they were frozen, I don't mean hand peeled, chopped and then frozen but actually straight cut frozen you get from the super market (my opinion and if I am wrong I appologise) even when I bit into some of the chips you could tell they weren't totally cooked! The burger, again didn't taste like a good homemade burger, something I was expecting. Now, in their defence, they don't advertise homemade burger and hadcut chips so I can't fully complain but a place like this, this is something I would of expected and something they defo did back with the old owners!I will be back and I will eat here again just to make sure I was wrong but sadly on this occassion it was like having burger and chips from a freezer in the supermarket but 3 times the price. Please prove me wrong, this is such a lovely place and you can be doing so much better

We reserved a table for 4 for Sunday lunchtime and we all selected the standard roast......The plated meals were not hot enough and the meat portions were small. It reminded me of pre-plated meals stacked in a hot cupboard and served when required......the meals were served up in lightning time which supports my view that the food might have been pre-plated keeping warm. The desert chosen, sticky toffee pudding, clearly was lacking sufficient custard and on requesting a little extra we were charged an extra £1.50 for a tiny jug which should have been included.Next time we are in Boscastle we will go elsewhere.

Stopped here for a tea break whilst on a morning visit to Boscastle. Pleasant restaurant, part of hotel building, situated right at centre of village by the small River Vallency, which may be remembered as a torrent after a flash flood in August 2004, which created havoc in the village and seriously damaged the hotel, submerging the Restaurant. Thankfully this is now in the past, the place has been lovingly renovated and we spent a pleasant 40 minutes or so having a refreshing pot of tea and delightful Cornish scones with jam & cream; reasonably priced too Very good service from Chloe, Sasha & Jake, who were very helpful in providing us with all the info we needed about the village and surrounds. Spent the day hiking around the local area and stopped at this place to re-fuel at lunchtime. It was clean and tidy, with a welcoming feel to it. I thought the prices were very good especially for an establishment in a tourist destination. Really good choice on the menu too. I struggled to make up my mind but plumped for the seafood burger and wasn’t disappointed. It was very tasty and the portion size was just right. The service was friendly and well timed throughout. I would definitely re visit the Riverside if in the area again and happily recommend.

We ate here twice during our stay in Boscastle, once for Sunday lunch and the other for our wedding anniversary. Outstanding food and service. The Sunday lunch was amazing with everything you could imagine to eat and 3 choices of meat (or all 3 if you chose). We were so stuffed we ate nothing else for the rest of the day. Our second visit was for an anniversary meal on our last night and again we weren't disappointed. We had a window seat with lovely views and the food was beautifully cooked and presented and so tasty. The staff are very friendly but unobtrusive and the customer service was second to none. Excellent value for money. Have eaten here before for lunch (I heartily recommend the fish chowder) but not for an evening meal and we will definitely return.

We were made to feel very welcome from the word go, even though we had not booked they squeezed us in and served us drinks until the kitchen was ready for our order. The menu is varied, nice portion size, all cooked fresh and tasted delicious, we ate for 4 nights during our stay in Boscastle and was never disappointed. Service was friendly and efficient, we would not hesitate in recommending this restaurant. Well done!

We stopped here for lunch on a wet British summer day - and what a treat. The soups were very tasty, sandwiches great, and the desserts even better! There are a few places to eat in Boscastle, but my advice would be to eat here - you won't be disappointed. Prices are very reasonable too.

We stopped here for a cream tea and sat on the opposite bank of the river on the terraced area behind the inside restaurant and bar. Orders are placed st the bar and brought to your table so you need to have your table number when ordering.

Booked in for dinner and were lucky to be seated with river views. The mango ad Brie filo parcels were very tasty. The cock and bull main course was nice as was the hunters chicken, the only downside was the oven chips....you would have expected better for the price. The service was excellent.

My husband and I have recently spent a most enjoyable week at this hotel, nothing was too much trouble for Ross and his team. Even though they were always busy, they always spared the time to welcome and talk to us. When we did have an issue, Ross dealt with it promptly himself. I cannot over emphasize the friendly atmosphere or the friendliness of the staff, it is only out measured by the views from the hotel and surrounding area.

Bright and cheerful decor with a nice atmosphere. Staff friendly and accommodating which was reinforced by a tasty and relatively inexpensive meal. Will certainly go again.

Lovely staff, lovely location, however, note to chef, there’s no point asking how you like your steaks if they arrive on a sizzling plate which means they end up over done pieces of leather.

We were looking to have a cup of tea somewhere pleasant in Boscastle after going around the village and having the local pasties. I noticed this place where you could sit downstairs inside but also outside. It was a hotel and restaurant called The Riverside. We went in to have a look and were offered a table for two. We said we wanted a tea only fearing they ‘d say we could only eat as it was lunchtime. But no we were very welcomed and found a table outside, ordered, paid and tea came within minutes. There were three bags in the teapot and some hot water on the side. It was the best tea we’ve had in a long time! It was so good that I decided to put it in Trip Advisor.

Before I get to my review first let me tell you a little about myself. I left a good job in the city working for the man every night and day. The world of finance was bringing me down, it was all money, money, money. I sat on the edge of the bed one gloomy morning and said to myself, “I’m going to make a change, for once in my life”. I quit my job and armed only with a saucepan and a 12 pack of pork chipolatas I moved out to deepest darkest Wiltshire, to a house (a very big house) in the country.

Had table booked for 6pm. When we arrived the Restaurant was almost empty. Food arrived cold. Duck was cold and chewy. Mash was nice but cold. Would not go again. Did not have a very welcoming feeling.

We had a lovely coffee here when we arrived in Boscastle. However we went back for lunch and walked over the bridge to the outside picnic tables. When we sat down the whole table complete with umbrella collapsed backwards. Three nearby couples rushed to our aid and lifted me out. I was fairly shocked by this experience. The legs at table 22 were rotten at the bottom which is why it collapsed. Be warned. Apart from a sore neck we were thankfully uninjured. I hope this table has been removed by now.

Four of us visited on Sunday 11th August, staff incredibly friendly and Sunday carvery absolutely delicious - all of us chose to have a slice of each meat (turkey, pork, gammon, beef) and all were delicious, though my favourite was the gammon! Lovely veggies and gravy too. Highly recommend and would visit again!

Very gimmicky, with high prices for ok food. Except the £10 pizza my son had which was a bought in plain oven 'pizza' which was disgusting - borderline inedible, and I don't say that in a snobbish way There is no way that the people deciding on the menu have tried that pizza- the staff admitted they'd had complaints before about it and passed them to management.

Another excellent takeaway The Fish & Chips are gorgeous. The Fish batter is always crispy and golden brown and the chips are so tasty. The young man puts on the right amount of salt and vinegar for our taste. Absolutely top class. I wish we lived closer. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Managed to catch them tonight before they closed. The lovely staff couldn’t be nicer…One lady came in on closing and had a right flouncy strop due to them closing and not having any chips left…They were polite and recommended their competitors up the road…off she stormed! People are just so rude!….Anyway, the Fish, chips, sausage, peas and curry sauce were all top grade! The curry sauce was the best I’ve tried locally! I’ll be back, great staff, good product!
