We visited The Rafters at Riverside while on holiday and the first face we saw was Sue! She is the most lovely, friendly, smiley and helpful person anyone could hope to meet when visiting somewhere new. Sue is a credit to this restaurant. The food...

We had a delicious sunday lunch here this week-end. Very friendly staff, nothing was too much trouble. However I would comment that I felt our meal was served a little too quickly. Would certainly go back.

My mum and I came here for lunch for a Mothers Day treat. It's not especially cheap (£34.99 per head for lunch on Mothers Day) but happy to pay that for reasonable quality. The hotel itself is lovely and the menu had something for everyone. I was a bit taken aback when we were told we had to order all 3 courses at the same time - supposedly so we weren't disappointed by not having our first choice of dessert. I thought that was odd but thought they may be really busy, but as it turned out they weren't overly. We had the ham hock terrine which was nice and then the roast pork, again nice, although roast potatoes were quite well done! The apple sauce wasn't nice - really sour cooking apples. Both courses were served quickly, a bit too much so, but I was a bit fed up when the dessert came equally as quickly. We were whistled through 3 courses in less than an hour - not great. I would have expected to have been asked if we were ready for our 3rd course. Coffee and petit fours were nice. The most disappointing thing was that the woman who took my money did not ask if we'd enjoyed it, I left a tip, and she did not even acknowledge this, which I just thought plain rude. I would say this could be a gem but it lacks some finesse.

We had lunch here with friends early in the New Year and enjoyed it very much. The staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The menu was varied and the quality of food very good. We were the last to leave, enjoying the comfortable surroundings, and were not hurried in any way. We will definitely be back. Eloise 60.

We've recently been twice for lunch at Riverside ,once in the week and once on a Sunday. We will happily go back. The lunchtime menus are excellent value and the experience of a traditional Country House Hotel is lovely. OK it's not haute cuisine but it's yummy. It's not a stuffy starchy experience,it's friendly and informal in great surroundings with lovely homely food. We couldn't manage all our meal because it was generous but we happily came away with a lovely selection of petit fours that had been served with the coffee.

Visited the hotel for my parents wedding anniversary. We arranged an afternoon tea and expected a perfect English Tea. What we had didn't live up to expectations. Don't get me wrong, the food was ok and plenty of it just not quite right. The tea was served in the conservatory on a few tables joined together due to our party size. Unfortunately it made a table tennis sized area and lost any cosyness. Sandwiches arrived on plates rather than in an afternoon tea presentation which made it more like a conference. Loads of tea supplied which was good but again in conference style cups and saucers. I expected some vintage China? The cakes were mostly toasted tea cakes? Some shop bought chocolate fancies, no Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, just a scone each and a dozen toasted tea cakes? Bizarre. The staff were a bit strange. One gave a small lecture on Top Gear and how Clarkson was so hilarious!! It looks a superb venue from the outside and is a typical creaky hotel on the inside. Our visit was more than disappointing.

We attended as part of a group. We had to choose our food in advance, but despite this some of the order was incorrect. My starter and pudding were fine but my lamb dish was very overcooked. The main problem was one of the waitresses who was extremely loud and overbearing and at times extremely rude. We encountered this young lady last year and said we would not return. We had heard that she had left, but clearly not so. By the way what has happened to the previous reviews for this establishment ? There were a number of them including one of my own. Why have they been removed?

A group of us came for lunch recently, the meal was so - so. My starter was lovely, however not everyone was happy with there's. There was also a problem with the orders, which we had made well in advance. One dinner was left waiting for his starter, the waitress implying we had made an error, when after much debate it turned out to be their mistake! The main course of lamb was poor, huge portions which over faced the ladies, over cooked and fatty. My desert was lovely, but again not everyone was happy with theirs. One of the waitresses was, to put it mildly, disgraceful. She literally shouted at us on several occasions - telling us to raise our hands if we wanted coffee etc. She even shouted at one dinner who (was leaning back on his chair to see who was shouting) "4 legs not 2". This was an expensive meal, and we expected some respect. We will not be back

On a cold blustery December day 4 of us went here for our lunch. It could not be faulted. Pre meal drinks by an open fire, chats with other customers who were obviously regulars, a two course lunch for £12 a head that was delicious and freshly cooked. Then coffee in another elegant lounge. We were very reluctant to go back out into the December cold!!! I cannot understand the bad reviews on this page. I would go back here again and again if I lived nearer. It felt as if one was visiting a private home. The ladies loo is very interesting (in a nice and flowery way!)

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.
