Came here twice, once for dinner and then for Sunday afternoon drinks. Outstanding hearty food and a lovely community atmosphere for a beer. Thanks to Vicky and her team. Quite possibly the best pub ever.

FANTASTIC food, and happy friendly staff. They've worried really hard on making the space work so although it's compact, it works really well, particularly if the weather allows for the beergarden to be used.

What a great pub! Lovely night, fabulous food, drinks on tap, great service, would highly recommend. Walked there from Great Longstone, only 15 minutes or so, well worth the visit (despite walking past two other great pubs along the way). Food was exceptional and the service also. "Have you heard about the specials? Band from the 70's. Too young? OK" Not to our table I hasten to add, we're definitely in the right age bracket, Lovely evening, thank you all 🙂

Went here for Sunday roast. It’s so tightly packed inside and we were constantly being surrounded by people at the bar and others sitting at our table even though it was reserved for just us. The door was being opened and closed so much the inside was freezing cold and didn’t make for a nice atmosphere at all. The food arrived really late as it went to the wrong table the first time so we were starving by the time we got it. Then when we finally got our food it was cold and the beef was full of fat and gristle. The staff were friendly and did resolve the situation which we were grateful for but we will not be visiting again.

We parked at Hassop Station and walked the trail just over 2 miles for a lunch booking. The booking confirmed we had the table for 2 hours which is very reasonable. All food was excellent, cauliflower to start, meatballs for main and sticky toffee for dessert. My wife agreed completely. Nice glass of shiraz. Service by three young ladies was spot on. Lovely atmosphere and deservedly busy. We are not local but wish we had a pub like this nearer home. Thanks to all at the Packhorse for a great meal to end the year. Best regards.

An old favourite pub with a wonderful atmosphere, good beer and food. That is until yesterday. Sadly the food does not quite belong with the atmosphere and good beer categories anymore and that lovely quality has faded somewhat. Rather disappointing to be honest when talking family members on their first visit. I know this pub had/ has pride in their food offerings, but there really needs to be an improvement. For instance, my dish was belly pork with black pudding mash, a really tasty meal, however far too much potato and no vegetables at all was what spoiled it for me. My wife had roast turkey, and the turkey appeared to have come from a roll, almost perfect circles. There were two slices one on the other with a sandwich filling of stuffing. Not at all appealing as we're the over large potatoes, which had skin on and reassembled baked, not roast. Socks need pulling up Packhorse please. Vicki, thank you for your reply and I can accept that on occasions things can fall a little below par, we are all human after all. The next time I venture from North Yorkshire to your vicinity, I will certainly return to your lovely pub. Regards, David

I tried to book a table for six of my family to visit this establishment. I went in line as asked to do on their website and placed a reservation for 1.45 pm for Sunday. I received an email with a reservation number but with a caveat that this was not a confirmation, but that I would receive an email confirming ‘if’ they could accommodate my party ‘as soon as possible’. I waited… and waited..,and nothing arrived. As I was travelling a considerable distance from Wales to be with my family for this occasion, I tried calling the Packhorse all day Saturday …. 11 times! Eventually on the Saturday evening I got through, only to be told that the earliest they could accommodate us would be 5pm. I explained the situation but the best they could offer was an outside table at 4.30 in the middle of winter. I think this is terrible service. All other online reservation services that I have used (such as OpenTable) confirm the booking immediately so you know where you are. Leaving it until Saturday evening to be told (and only because I called them) that they could not fit us in, has now limited my options for the next day, as everywhere I am now trying is fully booked up, and all because of a ridiculous booking system run by The Packhorse. Be warned. The food may be good, but I will never know.

My partner and I visited The Packhorse today for lunch. We both really enjoyed it. The current menu is particularly good for seafood lovers, and my partner said that her seabass dish was the best she's ever had in the UK. The staff were friendly and attentive. It has a very relaxed vibe, but at the same time it's clear that the standards are high in terms of the food and the service. The food isn't cheap, but certainly not overpriced - I feel like the price was reflected in the quality of the food and overall experience. We both had coffees which were nice and well priced. I would definitely recommend it and hope to return the next time I'm in the area.

We chanced upon the Packhorse as we returned south, breaking our journey in the Derbyshire Dales, after a week walking in the Lakes. What a treat! Easily the best food and service we’ve had in a long time at any pub. We had three courses, starting with KFP (Kentucky Fried Pheasant!!!). Then Venison haunch with a saffron orzo risotto and an outstanding cheese board washed down with the best beer (Brother Robin) and a Godfather cocktail, as recommended, with the cheese. My wife had Korean chicken, confit pork belly and lemon tart, all washed down with cider and some Shiraz. This all came down to a smidgeon under £60 a head which sounds expensive but would be good value at twice the price at much more well-known and pretentious venues. Service was top notch and worthy of a healthy tip (service NOT included which is rare these days). The unexpected nature of this find coupled with the service and quality of food makes the Packhorse my pub of the year and I will tell anybody who wants to listen all about it. Chapeau to you, ladies and gents. The Packhorse has legs. A tip for future diners: book ahead! We sat on the ‘impromptu table’ bit there is only one and just enough space for two.

We have eaten here several times over the past few years having been for a gorgeous walk in the surrounding area and it never disappoints. The pub itself is a gorgeous cosy old building with log fires. The food is tasty, locally sourced and generous portions. They do home made fries that are actually crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and madly moreish. The staff are very pleasant and friendly. And the beer garden is lovely. All in all a perfect Peaks pub.

We went for Sunday lunch on 13th October. The staff were good, but quite a few items unavailable, even the coffee! The food wasn't as good as I'd been led to believe but the quantity of beef - which was excellent- was huge so a bit of a mixed bag. I'd go again though as it's a great rural venue and is definitely worth supporting.

Went to the Packhorse Inn for an evening meal. Good food and choice of real ales for my hubby. However, my vegetarian mushroom main course was rather small and I did feel hungry afterwards. Additional veg/salad would have been nice. I love this type of olde pub which is clearly thriving from the packed tables tonight. However, I was disappointed to be sitting at a table with a sideway view into the steamy kitchen from a split stable door. With this in mind, perhaps additional ventilation could be put into the kitchen and a more attractive serving hatch. The music playing didn't add to the ambience either. I'm not against background music but it does need to be thought through to enhance the dining experience!

We stopped in for a Sunday roast and are so glad we did. The welcome we received was professional, yet relaxed and friendly. The atmosphere is spot on, and the food was something else. We all opted for the roasted beef, and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be back, that's for sure. If I were to suggest anything to the venue, it would be to provide steak knives with the beef, just to make cutting the medium-rare meat that much easier. But we still loved everything and can't wait to go back.
