We absolutely loved our evening meal and breakfast at Rafter’s restaurant. We loved the tasting menu. The quality of food and service were second to none. It isn’t cheap but it was a real treat and we highly recommend.

Last minute break for my birthday mid-week in November. Stayed room 2. Good points - checkin easy, very professional and friendly staff, room was clean, spacious, bed was comfortable, nice large bathroom with toiletries in the bathroom. Delicious vanilla choux pastries left in room Not so good - very noisy from what appeared to be plumbing from the next room , very hot on the night and difficult to get windows open Restaurant- exceptional service, nice ambience. We had the seasonal 3 courses which were delicious.

I visited Rafters at Riverside House with my family for Sunday lunch to celebrate my 40th birthday and had a fabulous experience. The service from all of the team was friendly, welcoming and attentive at all times, and the food was incredible. The starter of fish cake and curry sauce was a taste sensation, and the main course of Derbyshire beef was utterly divine! The whole experience was fabulous and made my birthday celebrations really special and memorable. Thank you very much to Alistair and the team. We will be back!

Absolute gem near Chatsworth So we first met these guys in Sheffield many years ago at their original home. This was our third or fourth trip to Rafters at RH. As always it did not disappoint… and personally I felt this was the best tasting menu yet. This place is reasonably priced for the quality delivered; attention to detail is second to none and it’s a beautiful setting. This time - after a fabulous breakfast - we did a walk to Thornbridge Hall through the snow and finished the day with a visit to Brocklehursts in Bakewell. This place is not that well known in my opinion but is absolutely fabulous. Can’t wait to go back!!

What a fabulous Sunday lunch! It really has to be one of the tastiest you will ever have and is dog friendly! A beautiful setting, we enjoyed drinks in the bar before lunch and were superbly looked after by Jamie throughout. We enjoyed bread and Henderson’s Relish butter, followed the tastiest fishcake starter as a starter. Then the most sublime roast beef, crispy roast potatoes, red cabbage, carrots, a side of gooey cauliflower cheese, extra gravy and horseradish & mustard! Absolute heaven. Cannot wait to come back!

We stayed for two nights, with our dogs. The location of the hotel is excellent, with lots of options for walking directly from the site. Nor could we fault the garden room, which was superb with a lovely outlook. The dining experience was mixed. On our first night we ate (as vegetarians) from the a la carte menu. The bread and desserts stood out as excellent. However, the signature butternut squash tortellini was lukewarm and had a tough texture, like it had been reheated or held under a heat lamp for a long time. The service was well-meaning but amateurish - when ordering the waiter didn’t know what was in some dishes (and nor did he offer to find out from his colleagues), and later we were brought out desserts with the plates from our main in front of us (we had to move our used plates aside, and they still weren’t removed). On our second night we ate the “Vegetarian Taste of Riverside”. Our waiter said that we weren’t listed for the tasting menu, even though we had booked it the previous day, and then made us feel like we should be thankful when he said we could have it. He also said we should have told them in advance we were vegetarian (which we did; at booking, during the pre-arrival call we had, and also during check-in). We were a little bit disappointed that there was so much overlap with what we’d eaten the night beforehand - however, as vegetarians and an understandably limited menu, we accepted that. However, the service was incredibly slow (like we’d been forgotten about); it was an hour after our booking that we received the first course, and then an hour and half in total for our first three courses. We were also confused in that our food was served out of sequence from the menu. The butternut squash tortellini was served cold - and it had the same tough texture as per the previous night. And I had to point out we were given our dessert before we’d been given the salt baked celeriac - which, when it arrived, was served with Hasselbach potatoes which were tough (and lukewarm), as if they’d been reheated. Again the desserts were flawless. However, overall the food didn’t warrant the apparent reputation. The quality of breakfast was excellent and so was the morning service by the two ladies that looked after us. However, we found it strange to have the floor being cleaned around us as we were eating (on both mornings)… with line-of-sight of all the cleaning equipment. There was a strong smell of cleaning fluid being used for the wooden floor, and a noisy manual/mechanical cleaner was being used on the carpet at breakfast time. We enjoyed our stay but sadly the food experience didn’t match our expectations, and I’m afraid to say we couldn’t recommend the dining to our foodie-friends. I provided feedback along these lines over two weeks ago by email; no reply so far. In retrospect, the tasting menu experience was so bad (bread and dessert aside), it was comical. Something wrong with experience-oversight and staff-training. Sad to see complacency based on reputation.

After recently visiting Rafters, we had to try Rafters at Riverside. We decided on a Sunday lunch for my birthday. Myself, my husband and our 6 year old son were looked after by Alistair and his team, and we couldn’t fault a single thing! The service, the drinks and the food were all outstanding. It was without doubt the best Sunday lunch we’ve ever had, and our son absolutely loved it too. The wagyu beef and the Yorkshire pudding with a hidden surprise were delicious, and the children’s menu was fantastic too. We can’t wait to come again!

Have been here several times before for Sunday lunch which had always been very good. Last time however wasn’t so good - poor service, average food. Decided to put it down as a one-off and gave it another go today, Sunday 29th September. Wish we hadn’t bothered. The service was still poor - very slow. There were no plates or cutlery for the bread and butter so we had to use the cutlery provided for the main course. No spoon was provided with the soup, then they brought a teaspoon!! Main course (beef) was a pitifully small portion with a couple of roasties, a couple of pieces of broccoli and a slice of roast carrot. It was also barely warm. There was also a side dish of cauliflower cheese which was stone cold. Didn’t bother staying for dessert. Disgusting really given that it’s £35 for two courses or £45 for three. They need to seriously raise their game. Overall it was a very poor experience - one that we will definitely not be repeating.

We only had two weekend late September nights in this quiet country inn in the Peak District, but they were delightful. Our welcome was friendly and efficient. We had a convenient first floor "garden" room, with an outdoor private terrace area, from which it was very easy to get to/from the parking lot with our luggage (though assistance with luggage from personnel was available for those staying on the 2nd floor). Though the room was small, form followed function, and all was practically layed out and well-maintained. The bed was comfortable, there was a proper closet and drawers, an in-room coffee/tea machine, a deep combination bath/shower, space to put out and access several cases, and nightstands with drawers. But the highlight of this comfy inn is the wonderful upscale restaurant where we ate both our dinners, where the ambience is cosy, the food delicious, the wine list large, and service perfect (hats off to Carlos)!. Though there was no AC in the roo, there was a fan, and being on a lower floor allowed the room to remain cool enough for comfort with just a window cracked open (there were also no ponds nearby, so there were no noticeable mosquitoes). Everything was overall handled very efficiently. My only (minor) suggestions for improvement are 1. Add a couple on-the-wall shelves to the bathroom near the sink (so two guests have room to put toiletry things), and 2. At the busy checkout time of 11am, temporarily add another person to actually help handle checkout (especially when guests last-minute discover billing disputes -- just one group of four ahead of me for checkout took 15 minutes of back and forth debate with the hostess to resolve a 30 pound overcharge, with 2 other staff just watching).

A lovely hotel nestled in a quiet village. Having stayed here before we were looking forward to revisiting. From the moment you walk in the staff are so friendly and welcoming and can't do enough for you. Carlos was the perfect dinner host and even put aside some bread and butter for us to take home the following morning. The garden rooms are bright and airy and beds and pillows are very comfortable. The waitress at breakfast was lovely; she remembered us from previous visits. The breakfast is absolutely fabulous but you definitely need room for it. On this occasion we just opted for the full English as knew we wouldn't have room for all the courses. We love visiting and can't wait to revisit.

From the minute we drove through the gates until the next morning at check out, the experience was out of this world. The room was beautifully decorated, we even had our own private balcony. We opted for the taster menu with paired wines, it was exceptional. Learning the history of each wine made it extra special. Breakfast the next morning did not disappoint. We would highly recommend a stay here, the food and service were outstanding!

This was our third visit to stay at Rafters. Stay 1 was amazing, lovely room (10), blown away by the food, service and everything. Stay 2 was also very good albeit our room (9) was smaller, not so well designed functionality wise with a small bed. Restaurant again was very good. Stay 3, I thought I booked the same room as stay 1 but was wrong, and we were in room 11. Bigger room than 9, nice comfortable bed and spacious room, but terrible lighting for doing make up! Please Rafters, you need shelves in the bathrooms (not impractical head banging ones above the sink). Good shower and plentiful hot water. The food this time not quite so ‘Wow’. Artfully presented and very tasteful, but staying two nights with the same four menu options (fish, vegetarian, chicken and duck at an extra charge) wasn’t ideal, as non fish eaters, that restricted us. Carlos was very attentive but we did feel we were ushered back to the bar area rather quickly after eating. The pre dinner amuse bouche are a lovely touch, thank you to chef who changed ours away from the fish. Breakfast is an excellent experience, as was the welcome on reception. Rafters is a premium cost hotel and restaurant. The staff are excellent and should be commended as they clearly strive for it to be so and I am sure nothing is too much trouble.

Stayed one night in this wonderful country hotel. It is in a rather romantic situation tucked away behind a high wall in a corner of the pretty village of Ashford in the Water. The river runs past the secluded garden. The dining experience is first class with excellent food beautifully presented. The bedroom had everything we could have wanted - coffee maker plus kettle and tea making facilities with fresh milk provided. All the staff were helpful and welcoming. It is not a cheap experience but it lives up to expectations and is thus good value. We hope to return.

Georgia and Josh and Alastair and all the staff were great. The zero five recommendation was wonder. All our requests were met with cheerfulness. The snacks are a lovely start. The starter hot pocket was generous. The lamb done just slightly more than pink was delightful. Every single accompaniment was top notch and tasty. The rhubarb dessert, a work of art. What a thoughtful touch with the Bakewell tarts on the Americano coffee. Then trying to light the fire. Nothing too much trouble. A memorable meal and we will be back. Mm

This was our second visit having been earlier in the year and been blown away by the food so we returned for an overnight stay with friends. The place itself is lovely, really cosy and the perfect venue for a cold winter night. The room was excellent, can’t fault it at all and had everything you would need for a relaxing break. The staff are really friendly and helpful and finally breakfast was absolutely yummy and plentiful. Unfortunately the evening meal in the restaurant didn’t live up to expectations and was well below the standard from our last visit. Don’t get me wrong it was still nice but a bit lacking in flavour and the main was way too salty. Don’t get me wrong this is a lovely place and we would probably come back but I don’t agree with the comments that it’s deserving of a star. We ate at a one star restaurant in London last weekend and Rafters doesn’t compare food wise. In every other way it definitely does. We stayed at the hotel and decided to have the dinner rather than go out in the evening. (See separate review of the hotel). Dinner was three courses at just under £50 each with a choice of 3 items for each course. No a la Carte when we would have preferred simply to eat less. Also, though there is an extensive wine list, no mention of wine by the glass.,When we asked, a glass of "rose" and then "red" were produced, though no indication of price.Having chosen what to eat, we were asked to sit in the hall room and given some nibbles. After a few minutes shown into the dining room. There was only us and one other couple and for some reason we were seated very close to them and, as there was no music (which we normally do not like) we had to talk very quietly. Sitting the couples further apart would have been more thoughtful. The food itself was good, though not outstanding, and we felt that had there been a choice of just two courses, it would have been better value for money.

We went there for a Mother’s Day lunch, and I have to say, we were thoroughly disappointed. The starters were nothing special, my partner had a tart with a lemon dressing – wasn’t so much of a dressing than raw lemon juice and rind – Yuck. The contents of the starters were swathed in bagged lettuce leaves. The meat was ok, but the yorkshire puddings were the worst I’ve ever tasted, and the steamed vegetables came mixed together in a big bowl, with a lovely puddle of water in the bottom. I was hoping for parsnips, roasted carrots, but no – honestly, you may as well have been in a canteen! Notably absent was stuffing – so disappointing as that's surely one of the best parts of a roast. Worst of all was the service, with lacking atmosphere running a close second. What ever happened to putting music on in the background? I’m sorry to say that the lady that served us just doesn’t have the finesse and charm to work in an establishment like that. She made us feel uncomfortable with her manner and as though it was all a little bit too much effort. All of our toes were curling underneath the table. She really tainted our experience of the Riverside. You could employ local waiters/waitresses studying for their GCSE’s at Lady Manners; and they would do a better job. The bill came to over £200. If you work hard for your money and want to spend it enjoying a memorable culinary experience, please please don’t go to the Riverside!

But did wonder if we had upset the lady that's was waiting on us. She was enjoying being rude and sarcastic with in minutes of our arrival. To a point that we were debating leaving and trying somewhere else. But we stayed and glad we did as the meal was fantastic. The 3 ☆ and for the meal and surroundings only. Shame that the waiting staff (could have been the manager) was just oddly rude. Very defensive and basic lacked people skills. Couldn't face another experience in her company again.

Stayed in the village for a long weekend and popped in a couple of times. The first for takeaway coffee which was delicious, and the cafe looked very inviting and welcomed dogs, so we went back for breakfast on our last day. The bacon and sausage baps were brimming, and my husband had a full english. I opted for a teacake trying to be good and avoiding the very tempting crossaints and cakes. Highly recommend if in the area.
