So I had the humour with a roti bread. The proportion of humour to bread was ridiculous. There was a massive plate of humous which was delicious by the way but 1 very small pitta like bread. When I asked for more bread I got charged another £2 which made the dish cost nearly £10.

Went in for a,' fresh mint tea' as,advertised all over the cafe, got a cup of boiled water with mint leaves & a lemon for £3.15! I reckoned it would have cost about 2p for the small slice of lemon, mint leaves can be picked free!

Ordered noodles. It was terrible. Clumpy, dry, insipid, inedible. The Greek salad came with no dressing or herbs. My partner had a similarly dry and insipid kofta wrap.We used to eat here regularly and enjoyed our food but not today. Perhaps they have a new chef who should not be allowed anywhere near the kitchen.

My experience this morning differs from the previous reviews. Seeing gluten free Buckwheat toast on the menu I thought I'd give it a try ...as a coeliac I'm always looking for great tasting bread. It really is great :-) and with that in mind I asked the staff for details of their supplier. Despite being busy the staff asked the kitchen and gave me the details of a local microbakery. It's great that this kind of business is supporting local suppliers but also providing great customer service. Thank you to the team on service this morning, you made my day!

Absolutely atrocious service from male member of bar staff with beard. Should be awarded the most unwelcoming bar in York. Teach the staff customer service, that would make a good start. Never ever visit again and would not recommend anyone to visit either

Incredibly rude service from one particular staff member, customers literally getting barked at for asking simple questions like can I sit out side made for a particularly unpleasant visit. Our drinks were practically thrown at us not to mention long purple frizzy hair worn down and almost touching the food on the plates. Safe to say we didn’t stay for lunch!

Visited here for brunch on Sunday. Hadn't been here for quite some time, but would highly recommend. The views along the river from the Terrace are quite something. Friendly and helpful service, and the food was extremely good too. Chose the granola with Greek yoghurt that was extremely tasty, and it also included a few pumpkin seeds, blueberries, raspberries and mint leaves that heightened the taste.

The riverside location in the sunshine is a winner every time. And it is open again for film lovers and those who want to enjoy a generous casual drink with some food and watch the boats and the ducks float past. All Covid precautions are in place. If you want to take a drink to the cinema you first have to ask for a table, you give your order, wait and then when your drinks arrive (as long as you have said you're going to a screen) you can take your drinks upstairs. Food menu looks good - choice of wines and beers excellent. Ambience - as everywhere a little lighter than before but that will change soon (one hopes). Excellent that they are back and as good as ever!

Had tea here last night with two friends Nice atmosphere and lovely window table over looking the riverGood choices on the menu including vegan options or items that can be adapted to be veganSome staff are not the most attentive for example I stood at the bar waiting to be served whilst the member of staff behind the bar carried on tidying up and ignored me until another member of staff came behind the bar and served meI fancied a glass of wine with my vegan flatbread but the staff had no knowledge of which if any of the wines were vegan and one looked totally stunned I was even asking Any restaurant that offers vegan food should also know the ingredients of their drinks and ensure that at least one wine is vegan and the staff know this. Running Duck is a popular choice for a lot of the places I visit, they do red white and rose and are organic and fair trade. All in all... the food and location are nice but the drinks and service could be improved

From 10.30 in the morning this place always seems alive. Whether you are going to see a film or not, it has a great offering of drinks, coffees and snacks and light meals. If you are amber you get discount on this (and on entry to the screens). There is relatively large space inside with another dozen tables o the riverside terrace - ideal for a warm sunny day. Reservations are not possible and this place can get busy but remember many people will disappear shortly for that latest film they want to see so waiting a little bit can be rewarding. Food is very good - service is via the bar, food brought to the table.

Went for a quick lunch, ordered a Pizza to share, the guy behind the Bar was very pleasant and recommended a wine to go with it , which was a good choice. We were served within a reasonable amount of time. The Pizza was okay, the base a bit rubbery and could have done with been cooked a few more minutes but it was edible and okay. We did notice a lot of women feeding babies, maybe it was their movie day, then odd people just wandering in eating a sandwich from somewhere else just sitting down in prime seats without ordering any thing. The girl at the back sitting at a table for three, her coffee long ago cleared away, then the waiter goes to sit and chat with her endorsing that its okay to sit there without buying anything. There used to be a non smoking policy on the terrace, NO SMOKING until after 9pm that's obviously all changed as I noticed a couple out there smoking and of course as soon as the door is opened we all get a whiff of it too. This whole place needs redesigning to accommodate the customer the people who use this place to go see a movie or to socialize instead you walk into a blank space, then the counter for buying stuff and some uninterested girl waiting to sell you a movie ticket, you can buy the tickets at the bar so why not redesign the whole place more seating with the bar/movie sales wrapping around to the dead area in the entrance, open it all up.....make the customer experience really work. Put an open Pizza oven area in even......THIS PLACE is crying out for CREATIVITY in so many areas. It needs to up the ANTE big time, there is in YORK so much choice of a lot of very excellence places to eat, drink and enjoy.....City Screen is falling of that list.

Weekend in York, decided to go to the cinema one evening. Although slightly more expensive than the standard cinema chains, it's definitely worth paying slightly above the odds for a more exclusive experience. Would definitely recommend a visit here. The food here was excellent. Both vegetarian mains were yummy, the veggie chilli that came with the nachos was absolutely delicious. Drinks menu is extensive. You can take your drinks into the cinema although they need to be served/decanted into plastic cups. The cinemas themselves are much smaller than perhaps you are used to although we felt this added to the occasion as there was a great atmosphere in the room making the movie more enjoyable. All told we prefer the smaller cinema experience but how about some armchairs and sofas in there and allow you to take food in with you to make it a perfect experience?

A regular stopping off point for me after in-town meetings as the beer is good, the staff are lovely and the pork pies are to die for. Ive also attended many a corporate booking here and found the service and grup to be excellent. Certainly not just for pre / post cinema drinks, it's a great bar with a riverside view and terrace and a changing wallscape of local art. Highly recommended.

Came in for food and a drink, no staff member acknowledges you as you come in so you find your own seat and go to the bar. Whilst I was stood at the bar waiting they served someone else before me even though I was waiting longer, there was 2 female staff members behind the bar that discussed their personal life and also swore in front of customers. Whilst I was making my order she complained about the till and didn't tell me how long I'd wait just handed me my change although I heard the other one tell someone in front that it took around 25 minutes to cook the burgers. I got a number and sat down. After 40 minutes I went in to ask about it and the woman that served me ignored meFor a while then looked at me,I said I was still waiting for my food and she asked what id ordered looked confused then said she'd come out to speak to me. The manager then came out and explained that the order had been lost getting to the kitchen and was ordered incorrectly. She was really nice and obviously embarrassed so offered free drinks a refund or to reorder. We asked for a refund and declined the free drinks. She came and gave us a full refund and drinks vouchers which was nice of her. I think she needs to train the front service staff as they clearly don't really care about their job or the poor service they offer!

This is the one place in York I can trust, that when I go see a film, want to have a drink, have something to eat, I can do so in peace. The staff create a wonderful atmosphere, are knowledgeable, kind & very professional!

I liked the set - up although it was just a call to pick up a hot chocolate to take into the cinema. Exposed brickwork, exposed metalwork, great floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Ouse. Somewhere I expect to return to soon.

Me encanto este lugar, sentarse a orillas del río, sobre todo en la noche, ver reflejados las luces. A pesar del frío es muy cálido

I'm amazed by the possitive comments about this bar. The staff are frankly scruffy, the red house wine expensive for stuff of poor quality - Wetherspoons serve better, the coffee far from good. It's newish decor has brought it struggling into the1960s.Disappointing for what could be an excellent venue when visiting the cinema.

I love making time to visit the cafe usually for lunch. If the sun is shining the place is bathed in a light that warms the room. The fish finger sandwich is a good choice but on my last visit the burger choice was mouth watering. The coffee is always good but if you fancy something stronger a good selection of lager and wine will complement your meal perfectly.

Absolutely love this place, spent a lazy wednesday afternoon by the river relaxing and enjoying the view over the river. We ordered sandwiches and soup which I must say were the best we have had eating out in a while. Everything was home-made including the warm crusty delicious bread and the tasty broccoli and Stilton soup. Nothing was microwaved or frozen and cooked to order. Would definitely reccomend.

Really good place for a bit to eat and/or a coffee before a film. Relaxed, informal with good choice and very reasonable price. Worth visiting even if you're not going to see a film. Can get busy at the weekend, but then good places tend to do so.

A brilliant location overlooking the river, eat inside or sit on the terrace. The chunky skin on chips are delicious with mayo, we had sides of spicey nuts, olives and calamari to share. Good lively atmosphere, cinema adjoining, can also have a drink on bar stools. Good helpful service.

A reliably good source of nice food, a wide range of nice drinks and a relaxing setting. A pleasant oasis away from the madness of the city centre, a good place to meet, a nice place to sit with a book overlooking the river, or a good spot for a drink before a film - this place can be many things depending on your mood. I look forward to going back

Ideal as a meeting place or for drinks and a bite to eat before viewing a film. The café-bar overlooks the River Ouse and there is seating outside on a patio right beside the river. Good selection of food and drinks, and a very relaxing atmosphere.

The location here is great and with sweating varying from traditional table/chair to sofas. What I particulalry liked was the total flexibility in terms of what you eat at what time of day. This place can morph into whatever you want it to be e.g. Coffee and cake, light lunch nibbles, more substantial food, wine bar. We met for tea, moved onto wine and topped up with tasty and substantial nibbles. Service was excellent.

We went here for breakfast on Sunday, before attending midday screening, and were very impressed. It was easy to get a table with a lovely view over the river. The food we ordered was beautifully cooked and generous portions. A tasty and relaxing breakfast.

I was at the hotel early morning ahead of a conference and wanted tea and toast although not a resident. A young waiter called Abdul was very helpful and although his lounge section was not open for drinks etc at 7.40am he assisted and organised both for me. A professional , helpful and informative waiter who should be recognised for his service. Thanks again - it certainly left a positive impression with me about the hotel.

Having booked a table, we had to wait at the bar for some while even to be welcomed, with people arriving after us being shown to tables before us. Once seated, it took a long time for anyone to take a drinks order, or to bring a drinks order, bring menus, etc. Indeed, so slow was the service that we decided that we would leave if our order hadn’t been taken within 10 minutes (having already waited some little while). In fact, it was taken within eight minutes! The food itself was lovely, but the service was chaotic, if friendly, and slow. There are much better places to eat in York.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!
