This pub is in it's 3rd age. Completely refurbished pub with a new restaurant, it is a hit with visitors and locals alike. The pub is a friendly and inviting free house (unusual in these parts), and what can I say about the food? Absolutely fantastic. The steak and chips is the one that you dream of. Cod 'bourginion' was inventive and perfectly executed. The starters of monkfish scampi and kedgeree scotch egg were beautiful. Service was efficient and not intrusive, lovely decor, 10 out of 10.

Stayed in Portmellon for a week and ate here 3 times. Sunday lunch was excellent, we then had a dinner on Thursday evening which was exceptional and Friday lunchtime fish and chips ... what can I say, would go as far as to say it is the best I have ever had. A very talented chef who obviously has a passion for good quality ingredients and meals. My husband also states the Guiness was amongst the best he has had and he should know as he drank a few over the course of a week. 🤣 Highly recommended and we will be going back when we visit the area again.

We visited the Rising Sun since we saw it had a new chef. The decor and food were great. The only thing that we found a bit odd was how bright all the new lighting was. No real ambient light which didn’t really make it at all cosy.

Me, my mum and our friend went to the Rising Sun pub, along with my mum and our friend's other friends, and eventually my dad later, for a quiz Tuesday night. And we had a fun time taking part of the quiz. Although we didn't do well, we managed to try our best, and that's what matters. And as for the pub itself, it is better than it ever was before the last time we've been, since the new owners took over the place. It is more beautiful, it has lots of more and provides excellent service. And the new staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. We had a fun night at the pub, and we are very much looking forward to coming back again for another quiz night, possibly next week or so.

Our food was delicious a really good menu “pub grub” very well done the service was spot on, the scotch egg is not to be missed. The atmosphere was lovely. I liked that although it’s an eatery you are just as welcome to stop in for a drink and can sit at the bar (or a table). I remember the pub being rather dark and dingy but after it’s up date it’s now light and bright, you really feel beside the sea. The beer was well kept and there is a great choice of wine. Keep doing what you’re doing, I can’t wait to come back.

I visited in July 23 to take part in their Monday night puquiz, parked in the carpark under the sign that said "Parking for Rising Sun". I gave money to their charity and even bought the landlady a drink. 2 weeks later I received £100 parking charge (for 2 hours parking!). I rang the landlady asking for reprieve or for her to send me an email confirming I was a guest of the pub, she pointblank refused. I found her to be very unhelpful, obstructive and rude. Beware other punters, to both misleading signage and discourteous and ill natured landlady.

We had walked out from Mevagissey to Chapel Point and called in here on our return journey. The service was friendly and we found a bench to sit outside in the sunshine. My cider was good, and very welcome after the walk. They were not serving tea or coffee at the time of our visit, but we were told we were welcome to get a hot drink from the Shack right next door, and bring it into the pub, which was very helpful. We would definitely call in here again when walking in the area.

I used to work in this pub when I was 14 and I always had a soft spot for it. It’s a great half way stop for a good walk to Chapel Point. Today I was struck on a BH Sunday in August how lacklustre it was. The man behind the bar doesn’t seem to like people at all. He shouldn’t be working behind a bar. He actually provides a cold environment. It’s a shame when this place is your home that you get treated like an outsider. I wouldn’t like to think visitors get treated the same either. I ordered a can of coke and bag of salt and vinegar crisps and it was £3 so expensive. There was hardly anyone in the pub and I am not surprised. Not even selling food. I don’t get it. Great location fabulous weather this pub is a totally missed opportunity.

My mum and myself went on a fantastic boat trip yesterday and was recommended this pub. So after finding out the pub we wanted to go had closed last year. We ventured to The Rising Sun Inn. We had a wonder down to the beach and thought we’d go to the pub for a drink and possibly a bit to eat. We could see people sat outside drinking so ventured into the pub. Yes it was a tad dark but both myself and mum have react-alight glasses so didn’t think much of it. We were both desperate for the bathroom. Again dark so used the torch on my phone. We both ventured into the bar to order drinks. To then have nothing but abuse screamed at use by the lady in the pub. Saying, ‘How dare we be in her pub and to get out’. We responded calmly explaining the door was open and people were drinking outside. Thinking this would calm her down. But NO! The abuse just kept coming. My mum struggles to walk at the best of times and we both feel we did not deserve to be spoken to like this. It took us a good hour or so to stop shaking after getting out of there. Next time be polite! We are only human!!

Much better with large empty beach and 5% of the crowds! Extremely pleasant place to while away a sunny afternoon. And this pub just enhances the whole experience....it’s 16th century,it’s dark,it’s a real pub with charming staff and tasty Sharps Atlantic ale !! Walked over from Mevagissey for the second time this holiday. Very Covid19 secure and yet maintains a lovely ambience. Sharon the host works tirelessly to provide great drinks and service in these challenging times. For the second time also locals gave up seats to visitors to enable everyone to have a drink here. It's a credit to the management and locals that us tourists are made so welcome. Thank you! Amongst the Ales available were Tribute, Atlantic and Doom Bar. Other refreshments were available and no doubt as exceptionally presented. Unable to try the food offer but I'd expect it to be as good as everything else here. Enjoy!

Visited this on basis of reviews as being a pub of character in good location. Little dissapointed with no car parking (that I could see) and generally looks a little run down from outside, Menu was outside on wall - no menu to view inside. Landlady kept sayin "basket meals" on Saturday as if that should mean something - but this is not a term I recognise - but accepted limited choice as Saturday lunch. Food OK - but not brilliant. Table service from person cooking food in the kitchen a little odd. Brought out cuttlery in a container and put int on a neighbouring table even though the people said the food order was not theirs. Then meals were kind of dropped on the table. Basket = a fake plastic affair. Difficult to eat from - please just use a plate! Coffee from a kettle rather than a machine and landlady put suger and milk in. None of this is massively problematic but it all just gives an impression of everything being a little too much trouble. But the big one for me was that in winter you need to put on some heating. There was a wood burner but not on. No visible other form of heating. In winter I expect a pub to be a comfortable place with atmosphere. I am afraid we just ate and left asap. A shame. I suggest the staff take a trip to The Pandora Inn near St Mawes which also has a great location but shows how it should be done. Also take note on decor - people expect a higher standard these days. I hope that it gets better as a great position - but that is not enough when paying decent money for food.

Always visit Portmellon and The Rising Sun Inn. We sit on the harbour wall with a drink and crisps usually. This time we decided to eat there. I ordered a ‘gourmet burger’ it came out as a dry piece of meat in a bun with some chips. No salad, sauce or anything to make it remotely gourmet. The poor lady behind the bar was serving drinks, taking orders and running food. We waited 45 mins for pasties and burgers and it wasn’t too busy but it was under staffed. Hopefully it’ll be better on our next visit.

Nice little pub in a great location. We stayed in a cottage in Portmellon, and there was always lots of people sitting outside the pub, in the sunshine, enjoying a pint. As well as the normal menu, they have a specials board, with 2 or 3 extra choices. Our party ordered: sausage and mash, steak & chips, lamb chops and roast potatoes. All were well cooked and were generously sized portions. There was a good choice of beers, including St Austell Brewery Tribute, Proper Job and Korev. It was a little dark inside, although the dark clouds and rain lashing down probably didn't help! The cute little pub-cat mooching around also added to the overall feel of the place.

My husband and I stumbled upon Portmellon Bay quiet by accident but ended up staying two glorious nights and three days. We had been travelling the English coastline and found this small bay and small community to be a delightful reprieve from the hustling and bustle of the resort towns. We used this Inn as a base to travel around the Cornwall area, returning of an evening to listen to the sounds of the Bay, watch the cows on hillside return home for dinner, have a great pub style meal and sleep in this quaint and historical rooms that gave a wonderful view of the tiny harbour. Found it hard to get moving of a morning after having a traditional English breakfast, sitting in the sun outside and talking to the locals as they passed by.Sharon and her family were a delight and made you feel right at home. I enjoyed the meals, inexpensive and had vegetarian options. Salads were fresh. From our ten days, and staying in all levels of accommodation along the way, we found these few days to be the most memorable and relaxing.Walking the local area was beautiful and those that love a good steep hill to conquer will not be disappointedWe would definitely stay again.

It is no coincidence that the recent, half reasonable, reviews all stated that they did not eat here. Yes, it is in and idyllic spot however, the lunchtime menu is sparse to say the least. Various fried chicken options along with a burger (the only adornment being a portion of chips and its own grease). Given the competition for vacant tables in the next door Meva, it is inexcusable not to make a little bit more effort in the food department.

Had supper here one night. It's the only pub in the village and it's opposite a pretty little beach/cove. We were out of season so surprised at the warm welcome, the roaring fire, the dog friendly staff and a decent menu. OK, so there wasn't much choice for a veggie, but there was a good mushroom curry, rice and poppadoms for a very reasonable price and hubby enjoyed freshly cooked fish and chips. It's no Gastro Pub, but come on, you are in rural mid cornwall not flipping Padstow. Good choice of cider, fairly friendly natives and yes it's a bit tired in the decor department, but use it or lose it. It's a great hub and could do with a bit of support.

We walked to Portmellon from Gorran Haven for Sunday lunch and were so disappointed. The food was just dreadful with the choice of roast beef or roast beef. The meat did not appear to have been carved from a joint and was over cooked and like leather. The desserts did not appear to be home made and when we asked for coffee we were told by the lady "we only have instant here, no posh coffee". That just about sums up the place. The whole place was in dire need of redecorating, especially the toilets which had an empty soap bottle, no paper towels and and old towel hanging on the back of the door to dry your hands.

I visited with wife and friends. It's an attractive location directly facing a sandy cove, so gets lots of in-season holiday trade, suggesting no strong impetus to try hard. That 'anything will do' attitude reflected in their staff, their cleanliness and their food. Given that fresh fish is landed just a mile away at Mevagissey - the harbour there is owned by the local fishermens' cooperative - there is no excuse for being served with small, stale, undercooked portions of nondescript and tasteless 'far eastern' fish. The chips also had seen better days.

My husband and I were on our way to Mevagissey on a day trip out from our camp site on the lovely Roseland Peninsular, travelling along the country lanes and coast - the pretty way. We rounded a bend and in front of us was the attractive Portmellon Cove and The Rising Sun Pub. We both had the same sense of deja vu. We had been to this cove and Pub 29 years before in the October. It was a windy stormy day and we had watched the waves lashing up and over the cottages just down the road from the pub. I was pregnant with our daughter at the time. Often we remembered the huge waves and lunching at the pub, but we had forgotten where it was. So, excitedly we stopped to have lunch. We had spent so much time stopping at lovely coves on the way it was now around 2.20pm, We parked up and went into the pub. We patiently waited our turn at the bar whilst the young barman served a customer who seemed to take for ever. Eventually it was our turn. The bar man looked at the bar clock - now approaching 2.30pm. Sorry Sir, we only serve until 2.30pm. But we only want a light lunch. Sorry sir, just served the last customers for lunch. No - " I'll just check with the kitchen." offer. I understand there has to be a cut off time, but this was ridiculous. I told him about our previous visit, but he wasn't interested. So on we went to Mevagissey for lunch, never to return....

Sunday lunchtime, staff nice and friendly but the only available option of Sunday Roast was slightly disappointing, not much in the way of meat, and not exactly the feeling of satisfaction after licking the plate clean, for the price it would have been good to receive a little more generosity in the portions and a bit more effort from the presentation department. We were not expecting too much and sadly we were still a little crestfallen after eating. The bar itself could do with a bit of investment to spruce the place up and brighten a dull and dark interior, the basics are there and a bit of relevant local artifacture, reupholstery and less dull and more creative colour theme might make the place a more endearing venue

I booked to stay here at the end of July with my friend. The booking was made over the phone and was pretty straight forward. I have a mini poodle who's no trouble at all so wanted to check it was ok to bring her- it was made clear on the phone there would be a small charge but all was fine. I was really looking forward to it! That was..until we arrived. Bit of a nightmare to get to. The road out of Mevagissey is extremely narrow, only enough room for 1 car, but it's a 2 way road! This isn't the Rising Sun's problem of course, but a little heads up would have been nice. The day we arrived there was an ambulance trying to get in to Mevagissey as we were trying to get out and basically after a 20 minute wait and lots of reversing up tiny streets we were able to arrive at the pub.Beware- the pubs carpark can easily be mistaken for a dump, lots of rubbish, and plenty of DOG POO littering the area but that's how you know you're there.A tad stressed (after a 7 hour journey) we ordered a drink- served by a polite young gentleman, and checked the food "menu" out. Very basic, chicken & chips, jacket and chips, chips and chips. I wouldn't eat there again, but the salad was nice.We were then shown to our room (by the same man).. The corridor upstairs smelt of stale cigarettes, but it's alright as there's an air freshener pumping out a powerful floral scent to knock you over at the top of the stairs. Our room..it was small but that was fine as we didn't plan on spending much time there..the bathroom, wasn't en suite and across the hallway. Again, not a problem, but would have been nice to get the heads up. The main thing about the room was the distinct doggy smell. Now I hear you gasp as I said I had a dog..but in the 3 years I have been going away with her (and she happens to be non-shedding), not once have I walked in to a hotel/Bnb/inn and smelt anything like this.. It was vile. Fair enough dogs stay there but air the room, get rid of the dog hairs on the bed and for gods sake have a hoover round! After I had picked the hairs off my bed, I went downstairs to ask the waitress (again, young girl, very friendly) how long the walk in to town was and for a couple of wine glasses, and she was very helpful. Can't grumble at the nights sleep, only problem the next morning was I was very wheezy, and this was due to the fact the room needed a good hoover to clean up after the last dogs who were there. My friend however, had food poisoning. We both ate the same thing for dinner in Mevagissey the night before and the only thing we can think is it was her jacket potato we had at this pub when we arrived- word of warning guys, don't beat tuna MAYONNAISE up...it's not the done thing....Bathroom was awful, very dark, light took 5 mins to get bright.. Towels needed a good wash, they smelt and there was a horrid old and tired carpet in the bathroom which stank when you got out the shower, nice.Skipped brekkie but we had to ASK (politely, may I add) for the room to be hoovered the next day as there was so much hair attached to the divan beds. The Hoover was handed to us and we cleaned our own room...........Breakfast the 2nd morning was basic. Cereal in packets, fine, cooked breakfast (I had 2 over done eggs) and the melon smelt like vinegar... (At least 2 days past its best)Service again, was good though.Pub is very dark and dingy and windows need a good clean to be able to admire the lovely view but you can probably see cleaning isn't top of this pubs priorities. The 2nd to last day, my friend, who happens to have epilepsy, wasn't feeling great..and I said I'd nip downstairs and bring her some cereal and yoghurt up so she could take her medication.Big mistake it would seem... I went to find a member of staff to ask if this would be ok and was confronted by the landlady. She told me I wasn't allowed to take food up- regardless if my friend was unwell. I explained the situation and NOT ONCE did she ask if she was alright. Now, fair enough if no food is allowed in the room but why weren't we told this when our beds were made up and empty food wrappers were cleared from our room. Also, why was I allowed to take my own wine up stairs and was given wine glasses to do so, if the rule was that strict??? We are both grown adults and I explained my friend only needed a few mouthfuls of cereal to be able to take her meds so as she didn't fall ill. Again, not a flinch from the landlady and zero concern. She went on that if a glass smashed she would lose her licence (there's tea/coffee making facilities in the room, 2 mugs and 2 glasses- this is apparently ok) and she made me feel awful for helping my friend out!Anyway, after patronising me and making me feel terrible, she gave me a huge bowl and scorned at me not to spill anything. That was it, we packed our stuff and left a day early.I'll never return, and it's a shame as its in a lovely location and all the staff except the landlady seem very helpful. A few tweaks and this could be a decent place.A massive let down at the moment however.Save your money and go somewhere nice, Cornwall has plenty to offer!

Recently ate here whilst on holiday. Lovely location, stunning views. Food was good value for money, staff were polite. Only downside were the chips. Would eat here again. Thank you

We were stopping at Port Mellon so tried the pub a couple of times despite the poor reviews, and we were pleasantly surprised. The views and location next to the beach are wonderful, and we got window seats on both visits. It is an old fashioned local with slate flooring and wooden beams. The food was served quickly and was good quality. The bar was full on a Friday evening with people both eating and drinking, and the atmosphere was convivial. The outside area was just a couple of tables which were used by smokers, including staff. This was a shame as most people obviously don't smoke and it meant the outside views could not be enjoyed.

This pub has fabulous views and a lovely location, however it is so disappointing. The interior is shabby and festooned with signs, advertising and instructions. Small outside area, which clearly can't be helped, but it's littered with ash trays and fag ends. Quite disgusting. The sign in the toilet asking you not to 'Nick the b....... Toilet rolls' is the last straw. Goodness knows what foreign visitors must think. So sad to see...

We walked here from Mevagissey for lunch. It is a lovely walk to the pub, and the pub itself has amazing views over the beach. We waited for a while to get served and both ordered a pint of Cornish Pilsner - it had an odd taste to it - nothing like the same pilsner we drank at a different pub yesterday. The lunch menu was very limited so we ordered basket meals of scampi and sausages with chips. The presentation was appalling and the food very expensive for what it was - £8 and £6.50 respectively .... A few frozen chips chucked in a basket with a couple of overcooked sausages - to be fair the scampi was okay but it's very difficult to go wrong with scampi - I did have to ask for tartare sauce though which would usually accompany scampi... Poor value and I won't be coming back, even for the beautiful views:((

Superb views over Portmellon cove and dog friendly, a major plus. It is an old quirky building. The day we visited was lovely but the outside was full of smokers, including 2 members of staff that we saw who smoked at the entrance. As this is also family friendly perhaps allocating a couple of benches up the lane but leave the ones nearer the beach as non smoking......very off putting with little ones around. We also ate her and have to say the food was very tasty indeed. however both the steak and ale pie and the veggie lasagne were small compared to other similar style pub food. The pie itself was a bit small and needed more gravy inside, although a jug of gravy was provided. The lasagne was done on a plate which could have been smaller and deeper as it was only one layer of veg and lasagne sheet and was a little dry.Perhaps a little prices for what you get.....taste wise though it was good and we would like to return another time and try another meal. Staff were very pleasant and served with a smile.

Although this was out of season I did spend several evening in this pubAs it was January there was no food being servedBut it was warm and welcoming Locals were great and I have new friends nowIt could do with a good spring clean but as it's winter I would imagine all that would be done before the season begins Sharron the landlady was warm and friendly and always cracking jokesAs it is right on the beach in the summer it is very busy but go there on a stormy winters day you will not get there as waves crash over the pub and carpark

An old pub with character situated on the waters edge offering good views with mainly locals at the bar. We were staying nearby and stopped by for dinner. No bookings are necessary. Order at the bar and meals are delivered by the barman when ready. Typical pub food, servings are more than adequate, and pricing inexpensive.

Have watched this pub go steadily down hill over the years. It has become so tacky, with the inside plastered with food adverts and notices. Poor wine. The tiny outside area ( overlooking the lovely Port Mellon Bay) is clustered with smokers, making it like sitting in an ash tray. Such a shame

The initial impression is of a local pub with character. The bar staff were friendly and the menu was what you'd expect, no surprises. Unfortunately the quality of the food was really disappointing, the batter on my fish was soggy. Although the pub was very handy we didn't return and found the Barley Sheaf in Gorran, only 2 miles away, was delicious, interesting and no more expensive.

Had a meal here last Sunday evening - gammon, fish ,burger & chips - couldn't"t fault it. Barmaid also very welcoming. The pub is ideally situated overlooking the cove and we enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine and watching the tide come in. It"s an ideal stopping off point for those walking the coastal path from Mevagisssey to Gorran. The Rising Sun is the focal point of Port Mellon as there are no shops.

I saw this pub early in the morning and thought it looked good for a future visit. After a long day's walking on a hot, sunny day and a few miles still to go, I was tempted in for a pint. Seeing the specials board, Liver and bacon was on the menu which I don't have often as the rest of the family don't like it! The staff are very friendly and the ale was excellent. My food arrived and there was plenty of it which was just what I needed having burned off over 5000 calories during the day. The liver was cooked perfectly and the mash was good too. The pub has outdoor seating if the weather permits and they will serve your drinks in plastic glasses if you want to sit nearer the sea. The more popular Mevagissy is a 15 minute walk around the corner but this pub is a hidden gem.

This is the place to eat if you're not a fan of freshly cooked meals. The beer however, was in good condition offering a range of Lagers and ales from the St.Austell brewery including Proper Job and Tribute with one other guest ale. The food was a great disappointment. A visit to the kitchen on my out confirmed my suspicions. Reheated food served with chips fully cooked a previous day then refried to order. An apology from the cook was a little lame. This is the only pub in Portmellon so I guess they're not bothered about returning customers.

The staff were incredibly friendly, not a single bad thing to say about them, but the highlight of this pub is the fact that right outside its windows, literally feet away, is perhaps the prettiest view in Cornwall. A must see for locals and visitors.

Came here ten or so years ago when it had a bustling restaurant trade. Ooh how times have changed cheerful enough landlord but not a great selection of ales and a wee bit dark and dismal. Needs an injection of some TLC

We walked here during a recent trip to Mevagissey, just about a mile away. The Inn was welcoming. The guy at the bar was a local and full of stories about the waves here in the winter. As with most area pubs, their hours are limited to lunch and dinner times. Hubby had a lovely mackerel platter. I had a delicious smoked salmon baguette and we both had a pint. Nothing outstanding, just tasty and comfortable - a pleasant place to stop.

We dragged ourselves in here at the end of a long, hot day walking the SWCP from Portscatho desperate for a cool pint. I have to admit to being a little disappointed with the selection of ales available - I was not expecting to find London Pride & Directors as 2 of only 3 ales available in a Cornish pub?!No problem - we quickly downed our pints and walked the extra yards into the centre of Mevagissey to find more suitable local ales to imbibe.

Shame about some of the reviews for this great traditional Cornish pub its a free house with a friendly staff in a beautiful location its well worth the walk from Mevagissey we are local and hate the prices charged for drinks at some more commercial established pubs around the area we had a great lunch of traditional pub fayre at a realistic price we will certainly be returning soon many thanks

Called here whilst on holiday in july, just made it with minutes to spare before food service finished. The staff were very friendly and chatty despite being very busy and clearly exhausted after a busy lunchtime rush. Enjoyed a lovely pint of cider whilst waiting for our food, waited about 25 minutes but when it came it was obvious it had all been freshly cooked. Not a huge portion but certainly enough and it was extremely good, in fact the best sunday roast we've had in a restaurant/pub! Would definitely recommend you stop by if you are in the vicinity.

We were on holiday and ended up eating here 3 times. We had our dog who typically was nervous in eating places so we never bothered eating out, we were given a table in the corner and asked for the same one every time which they obliged as she was settled, it helped that the staff were all so helpful and the food was so nice, would highly recommend the Pityme Inn and we will visit again, it made our holiday
