This is a great pub that is full of heart, providing a warm welcome and serving lovely food for all tastes. The spicy Korean Chicken, classic Fish & chips, steak and stone baked pizza are all amazing! Great for both locals and visitors to the area, there are lots of cosy indoor seating areas as well as an outdoor terrace overlooking the bridge and river. Child and dog friendly and with a great atmosphere - it’s well worth a visit.

Great country pub, Andy & Lindsey are great host & are super friendly great selection of Ales & other drinks available. A Good pub menu with a good range and pizza menu. Locally sourced ingredients used. We had the fish & chips. Fresh cod locally sourced from Appledore. Which I have to say is one of fresh piece of fish I taste in a long time in fact this is the second time we been.😊

We had a delicious lunch of cod and chips - the fish was fresh from Appledore, cooked perfectly in a light crisp beer batter. The chips were good, too. It's dog friendly with treats and water, has a huge carpark at the rear and the Ladies loo was super immaculate with nice touches like free sanitary products. Baby changing facilities. Friendly staff and locals made our visit a very pleasant experience.

Had driven past a few times on our visit to Devon and decided to pop in for lunch one afternoon and wish we’d done it sooner! Staff/owners were very friendly, the beer was lovely but the showstopper was the pizzas! Some of the best pizzas we’ve had, great options, really well made and the garlic oil made it even better. Highly recommend if you’re in the area, don’t miss it!

Visited The Rising Sun Whilst passing through the town. Very friendly welcome and glad we stopped. Ended up having the cod and chips, which melted in the mouth. Batter was crisp and light! We were made to feel very welcome and stayed a lot longer as the locals were very friendly and shared their stories long into the late afternoon… and then evening! There was a good choice of drinks and we sampled some of the flavoured ciders on tap. The pub is dog friendly and the atmosphere is a happy one. A family run business with family values at its heart. I nearly forgot to mention.. we went back again the next day! Thanks A, L & little miss A.

I just had a very nasty experience in this pup. I decided to take my mother out for a meal and thought we would visit the rising sun, which is just two miles from her house. I rang the pub and spoke to a very nice lady and booked a table for two. When we arrived, she served us our drinks and asked us to sit in the restaurant. The pub was quite busy but not over busy. The lady gave us the menus and said to order at the bar. The menu was very good and we thought we would go for pealla. I am allergic to peas and could only order this dish if it had no peas. I asked one of the bar men if there were peas in the dish, and he said he would find out. I started drinking my thatchers blood orange cider, which didn't taste right. I think they had not sold much of it, and it had been sitting in the pipe too long. I decided to go and change it at the bar and order our food. As I got to the bar, the barman and the nice lady were having an argument, and the lady looked in distress. The bar man pointed at me and told her to serve me. I said that I was ready to order but was waiting for the outcome on the peas in the paella. The bar man then snapped at me and said he was 90% sure it had peas. I said I would order something else. He then lost his temper completely, started shouting, and ordered me and my mother out of the pub. He was very angry and aggressive. I am not sure if he was drunk, but I could not reason with him. The poor lady looked very embarrassed and didn't say anything. I have never spoken to so rudely with everyone in the pub looking. Mum and I decided to leave the pub and go elsewhere. The barman probably didn't realise he was speaking to an environmental health practitioner and hid district Councillor. I never even got to change my gone off cider. Avoid this pub!

We visited with two dogs as a last minute change of plan. Kind of wish we’d stuck to our original plan but never mind. On entering we were asked to sit in the room on the left because the bar side was really busy including other dogs. So we sat on a lonely table and no-one came in to join us. Kind of felt like we’d been put in the naughty corner. The pub itself sounded very busy. We ordered food - can recommend the sausage & mash. It came in a bowl absolutely swimming in gravy but was so tasty. One of our group asked for mash instead of chips but still got chips. He wasn’t too fussed though. All in all, it was ok but don’t think we’d go again.

We stayed here from 31st March 2023 to 2nd April, as our son was getting married nearby at Tree Tops Escape. What a Gem The Rising Sun is. From the moment we walked in we liked it. The owners were so nice Thank you Andy and Lyndsey, not forgetting your lovely daughter Amber who is an active part of the staff although only 5. The room we had was spotlessly clean see photos and the bed was so comfy. Andy and Lyndsey your food is fantastic. We had a chicken and seafood Paella which was done as a special and actually lured me away from my favourite Lamb shank which was on the menu, which I had Saturday night both really excellent. The bar was filled with amazingly friendly locals in the evening who took the time to come up and talk to us and if we were enjoying our stay. When we can find the time we are going back so this time we can go and visit some of the surrounding areas, such as Barnstaple where I once lived and it's famous Pannier Market around 15-20 minutes drive, 15 minutes by train every hour as the station is just around the corner and £2.50 each way. Or visit Exeter by train as it leaves about every hour and takes about an hour to get there and when we looked fares were about £7.00 each way which beats trying to park and pay and you can have lunch and a drink. Thank you and all your staff for looking after us so well. Martin and Mandy.

I booked The rising sun as a surprise trip for my partner as it was for his birthday, we also had some wedding venues to view that weekend so wanted to make it a bit more special for his birthday, I messaged to ask if they could arrange a birthday balloon which they were extremely quick to respond to and say yes to which was great until . I had up until the 23rd to cancel the booked if needed. Sadly on the 23th my partner got news that his grandfather is extremely ill and only has 'weeks' left to live, he obviously was unaware of this booking so I immediately cancelled though booking.com. I cancelled the booking And was told that I would now be charged £215 for this, even though it was still within a reasonable time frame, I tried to contact them though email, booking.com and phoning to explain the circumstances and that it was due to a family matter. I was extremely disappointed with the response and the time frame to respond regarding my booking. I didn't hear from them until Thursday the DAY BEFORE we were due to arrive, Sadly my partners grandfather passed away on the Friday evening the day we were due to arrive. Now I understand that they are a business and need to book rooms etc to make money as I have been in both the restaurant and hotel trade, but the pure lack of communication or even sympathy for the situation was appalling. I asked if we could re arrange the booking as I was looking forward to coming here as the reviews are amazing, but cancelling a booking the day after the cancelation period and them contacting me 4 days after that its not possible and also not even a sorry for your situation, its not very good customer service! I get that they could have lost out on a 2 night stay but they might have been able to rebook which if they did then now have managed to get money from me and another customer! They could have even offered to only charge for 1 night. but to charge me £215 its not very professional and doesn't make me want to try again considering we will be going back to the area to re view the wedding Venues that we were unable to attend or we may have even suggested them as a place for some wedding guests to stay!! I just feel the lack of communication was very poor and for the situation we were in as well and it was in a decent time frame. Many thanks

As the pub isn’t very far from where I live I wanted to visit but I wish we didn’t. It was quite chilly and no fire on and the bar area is quite big. Had the pie, which was heated in the microwave, so it was soggy. Chips were okay, peas weee cheap and instant gravy. Won’t be returning when there are other nice places that do better food and will be warm on a November evening.

We've just got back from three nights here. And what a fantastic stay it was. Our room was in the lodge which is just across the courtyard from the main building. The bed was huge and comfortable and the bathroom had a roll top bath, over-bath shower, illuminated mirror and ample supply of clean towels and toiletries. There's even a little decanter of port left out each day on the bedside table. I'm not a great breakfast eater but my partner had the 'full English' which he said was delicious, and it looked it too. We only ate in on one evening as we like to try various local establishments. My Chicken Supreme was delicious as was the cheeseboard and I would have no hesitation in recommending the Rising Sun for both food and accommodation. If you have a dog as we do, they are also happily accommodated.

Having eaten at the pub a few weeks ago and enjoying a really delicious dinner, I was keen to return and sample the rest of the menu, this time also staying for the evening in the accommodation. We stayed in a recently renovated room in one of the out buildings, the room was huge, with comfy bed and a mix of quirky furniture and homely additions including magazines and port for a nightcap. Breakfast was delicious - full Devon breakfast with high quality sausages and bacon, and lovely selection of fresh fruit and warm croissants. Lovely space to enjoy a lazy Sunday breakfast with papers to read and top ups of tea.

Thought we would try it out as have heard good reports, went as a group of 4, all of us had different starters, the mushroom soup was apparently the best ever according to my other half. I had the belly pork bits which were absolutely lovely but obviously very fatty and rich so I shared some of mine out. The ham hock terrine wasn't great according to my friend, too much jelly and a bit gristly. Two had steak for main which looked and tasted fantastic and were very well cooked, other half had the chicken which in his eyes was amazing. I had the 3 cheese risotto which was utterly delicious, very creamy, perfectly cooked. Good portion sizes and good value for money, I suspect we will be back!

Visited recently with a large party. The food was good and the staff generally helpful and friendly. However, they have one member of staff who was extraordinarily rude, seemingly because we arrived 9 minutes late for our booking (we had barely walked through the door when his rudeness started, so this can be the only reason). You will see from my other reviews that I am not a complainer, and it takes a very poor experience for me to leave a negative review. His unpleasant attitude carried on throughout our visit, and was so bad it could almost have been funny, had it not been for the fact that we were there to celebrate a special birthday.

Just spent 4 nights at The Rising Sun with four friends. If you are looking for a fun, comfortable good value place to stay with atmosphere, and/or great beers and delicious pub food this is an excellent base from which to explore North Devon. We had a great welcome from Jules, Karla and all the staff who looked after us extremely well. The rooms are simple, well appointed, en suite and just what we were looking for. Karla’s breakfasts are fab. Dinner each night offered a great choice of pub food and I can highly recommend the steak night, also delicious pork belly, chicken Balti, salmon etc, as well as very good starters and puddings. Nothing was too much trouble and terrific trout, sea trout and salmon fishing is available on the River Taw, which I could see from my bedroom window. Likewise see fishing is easily accessed. There are numerous places to visit and Jules is a great landlord and very knowledgeable about all aspects of the local area. I will be back for more.

We visited the Rising Sun on Saturday with a group of friends. When we arrived it was busy and lively. We found a table but as they were closely positioned it felt a little crammed in the corner. Although busy it was quite cold in the pub which was highlighted by the landlady wearing a body warmer with fur trim, we elected to keep our coats on. It would have been nicer if the wood burner had been lit rather than just burning some candles in it. Two of us selected Mushroom Stroganoff which was very nice, but the others selected Riser Burger which was tasteless and dry, Steak which was mediocre and battered fish which was greasy. They were all accompanied by giant onion rings which looked impressive but all said were just very greasy. Service was ok but no interest was shown in the 3 meals that were left half eaten. Sadly I would not recommend the food here and advise to wrap up warm if you are visiting in the colder months.

Beautiful hotel, good parking and near the railway station if you drink a little too much!Meals were very reasonably priced for "proper' cooked food, definitely a cut above the rest for flavour and taste and served by a waitress who really waited! Between us we had rump steaks, fresh fish and chips and the in-house burger...no complaints!Highly recommended for all from active people (fishing etc included) to sedate "oldies", families and parties. Suggestion for Barnstaplonians- catch the train for a lovely lunch to Umberleigh, drink as you wish and return. (Trains every hour and 10 min travel time.)PS The real ale was proper Devon Ale!

We booked a large party for lunch on a Sunday. The pub is an ideal venue for a Sunday roast and a cosy drink by the fire - typical Devon old country pub - complete with friendly Labrador! Nice staff, lovely roast dinners, a couple of people felt their food could have been a bit hotter. However , we were all served at the same time and my veggie dish was hot. There was not a lot of choice for vegetarians so maybe not a great choice unless you eat meat. Overall we had a decent meal but it was not the best - but worth a visit as this is a charming little place and very relaxing.

We have been meaning to pop in for the steak night for a while so were pleased to be able to finally get here !Upon arrival we were offered a warm welcome and promptly served our drinks.. the pub was almost empty at this point so to be expected. We were offered a table of our choice and ordered our meal. Easy to chose as a VERY limited menu.I chose the Tomato, Mozzarella and Onion Salad.. very disappointing.. huge lumps of cheese, 3 chunks of tomato and some lettuce.. topped off with olives still with the stones in.. not easy to eat in a salad. My husband had the whitebait, ok, but would have expected to be served with some sort of bread.Obviously as it was Steak night we both chose Steak. Served with homemade onion rings, mushrooms and fries the portion size and quality was very good ( well worth £10 ) but it was all tepid / cold. We also had a peppercorn sauce which lacked flavour, and was basically some warmed up cream with a bit of pepper thrown in !!I know it was only £20 for the 2 mains, but I would have expected it to be served on hot plates and to have been hot !!The pub in general is lovely and clean, the service was fast and friendly but felt slightly cold ( we kept our coats on ).

We decided upon this pub for our final meal having rented a cottage nearby. We had popped in for a drink earlier in the week and had received such a welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Real ales, a good wine list, roaring fire and lovely menu. In fact, the ribs are on every second Thursday, but when we showed our disappointment she said the Chef would put them on the menu for our visit. They were amazing We were a party of 10 which included 4 children. All the food was delicious, good portion size and piping hot. If we were ever in the area again we would not hesitate to book here again. Lovely hosts and a very cute dog Dog and child friendly.

The place is popular. It was busy but we were fitted in. The food was ok. There were a lot of people walking through the restaurant whilst be were eating. I think they were the entertainment team. The older gentleman who was part of this team let rip an almighty fart as he passed our table. To say this was offputting is an understatement!!!!!It put me off. I didn't bother with pudding.Dog friendly.

Dropped in for lunch as location looked lovely. Having eaten in many pubs this was one of my worst experiences I have had. The bar staff were friendly but food very poor.Pie of the day wasn't really a pie nor had any gravy as stated in the menu. Obviously microwaved. It wasn't cheap either.

What a brilliant spur of the moment stop off. Fantastically efficient service, a relaxed atmosphere with incredibly friendly staff. The menu was wide enough to suit a variety of tastes and really reasonably priced. It was busy for a Thursday night so in future wouldn't chance just dropping in and would recommend booking ahead as it seems very popular both with locals and holidaymakers. They serve local ales and organise salmon fishing on the river which runs close by...lovely!

We were staying a few miles down the road and decided to give the Rising Sun a try for an evening meal on a Thursday evening. My wife had the Crayfish salad which was excellent and great value. I had the mackerel pate..tasted good but maybe needed a touch more horseradish. My daughter had rump steak, I had ribeye and my wife had lasagne.... Both of the steaks were cooked very well and the quality of the beef itself was very good. My wife said that the lasagne tasted very nice but she would have preferred a bit more béchamel sauce between the layers... Staff were attentive and polite and the local black dog with the soulful eyes who sat quietly by my side did make me laugh..... I think that we spend too much time looking for the gastro pub experience, nice as it can be. There is a lot to be said for good pub food, well kept beer and a local dog..!!

We stayed two nights here and are very impressed. It has recently been taken over by new tenants who have converted it from an extremely dubious pub into a very comfortable hotel with loads of character. The food was extremely good, and the breakfast was enough to see you comfortably through the day. The majority of guests are there to fish, but also tourists to the area and walkers/cyclists who "do" the Tarka Trail. Recommended!

When we booked, we asked for a quiet table for two and were assured this would not be a problem, even on a Friday evening. In the event, the reserved table was squeezed into a tight corner and there was barely any elbow room between our table and the adjacent table for four. This was embarrassing both for us and for the people at the next table. We could hear their every word, and vice versa. We did not enjoy our mal: the food was at best mediocre and we did not appreciate being squeezed into such a tight corner. In order to leave our table, with the help of one the bar staff we had to lift it out of the way. When we complained to the manager, he apologised, albeit reluctantly, and offered no compensation. Altogether a thoroughly disappointing evening. We will not be returning.

Seems to be the only open at lunch time pub in the area, hence the title of my review. For proper meals the menu looked appealing and at average prices. We had a filled brown bread baguette. also reasonably priced. What we did not recon with was the pile of chips that came with it, turning the snack into a meal. Also on the plate was a good sized salad garnish.Owner was very friendly and helpful with knowledge about the area.Worth a visit if hungry and in the area.

The owners gave us a nice welcome. We had a drink while we looked at the menu. Food was very average. Smoked salmon starter had no taste of salmon and was decorated with thin strips of carrot rather than with actual smoked salmon served with crispy melba toast, this was a disappointing dish. We then had a lamb rogan and a seafood pasta. All I can say is that both dishes were ok nothing special. Dogs were welcome in the pub and we have nothing against this except that the waitress was continually stroking the dogs and then waiting on us. It did put us off a little. Don't expect fantastic food but it isn't expensive.

We dropped in for a light lunch during a long drive down to south Devon. Very tasty filled baguettes, generous portions. The soup of the day (tomato) was very good if a bit too peppery. Enjoyed the local ale. Friendly staff and beautiful dogs. Would like to come back for a proper meal and dessert.

Always lovely atmosphere at this pub, log fire, welcomes dogs, all staff and landlord friendly however a little disappointed this time when we asked for fish at 6.45 on a Friday night and all sold out !the chips were stick fries and the pie was in a pot with a puff pastry lid, not a pie, however meat in pie tasty....always been good prior to this visit

As we both drive past twice a day its been hard not to notice the weekly events advertised out the front. We decided to attend the Caribbean night, we were given a warm welcome and couldn't resist sampling the punch. We weren't sat for long before we were invited to choose from the various dishes available. There were 2 fish dishes , ox tail ,jerk chicken and mutton with some lovely vegetable sides. Between the 2 of us we managed to try a bit of everything, it was all delicious! We had a great evening and must say how refreshing it is that the pub is putting on nights like this.Since the Caribbean night we've had dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it!Looking forward to attending some of their live music evenings!

What a gem of a find. Lovely quirky little pub. My wife is a coeliac, and most of the main courses on the menu were gluten free. Delicious food, very friendly staff. We had the added bonus that the local folk band were practicing, so great food, nice chilled music & lovely surroundings. Definitely a 10/10.

Bad first (not that bad ..😆) A bit old and dated, dispite the newish tile panelling Batter was nice but a little oily on the fish (soaked into the batter) The good.. HUGE battered fish - (suggest you just get the small one) cooked perfectly Sirloin steak was tender and cooked perfectly (ordered medium) I was pleasantly surprised on the quality, as it's a basic takeaway with a restaurant attached and it was under £20, so no top steak restaurant - but kudos to the chef, best £20 steak I've had, and better than some classier $$$$ places I've been, For that £20 I also got onion rings (perfect), salad - quality greens, few cut up bits of capsicum a couple of mushrooms, tomato, fried tomato too and plenty of chips cooked perfectly and very nice. (but best chips in UK I've had is at Lochgilphead - Scotland) Constructive criticism only - I was VERY happy given the price, Way better than a lot of places I've been to so far in the UK, and would definitely eat the same dishes again. Staff were friendly... This is at the end of the tourist season too. (Oct'24)

Me & my partner came here on 5/9/24 on a very rainy day. We both grabbed a little drink and a treat here and relaxed in the lovely cafe after a long wet walk from Croyde bay. The staff here were wonderful and all really lovely! The millionaires shortbread was the best I’ve ever had and the cheesy chips were delicious! There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, both hot and cold. Really lovely vibes and will definitely come here again!

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

One of the best Sunday carveries that we have experienced, with a wide range of vegetables & meat; welcoming staff, especially Kim & Wendy, nothing was too much bother
