If you want unfriendly service, a miserable land lady who is rude and abrupt then go to this place !

Quite dated but still a decent pub with plenty to offer.

Worst meal I've ever had by a long shot. I felt robbed even paying for my meal. The chicken was unedible, it was clearly overcooked and I physically couldn't chew the meat. Everything was bland and flavourless and over cooked. We ordered our food and it came out in about 30 seconds so these were clearly reheated in a microwave. Everything tasted cheap and disgusting. I'd feel ashamed serving this to people. Not one thing was good. Roasties were deep fried, burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. Customer service was good and was the only thing that made us feel bad about refusing payment. I'd be overly nice knowing I'm serving people garbage though.

We arrived at Rising Sun and could see that it was very quiet during Sunday lunch time. This immediately gave me a warning sign as any good food pub at that time of day should be bustling. The pub seemed really nice, the bar man and waitress were lovely! But then it came to the food....we ordered 3 roast dinners and we wished we hadn't! The food was not good. It was kind of edible but so bad. We were polite about it but I fed a lot of it to the dogs. Bonuses were it was dog friendly and good beer. Everything else they seem to be doing right but please take a look at what you are serving to your customers.

Went here as we where passing and hadn't eaten all day, place was empty, Sunday lunch came out in 5 to 10 mins and it was swimming in water, couldn't eat any of the veg, managed the meat but no taste what so ever, tiny plates and bill was 39.70 that's 2 dinners and 1 drink each, we left and went to tesco for something else to eat as this was disgusting . I'm far from a fussy eater but that has to be the worse sunday lunch ever .

Good size carpark and its free Check in is at the bar then though the bar to get to the rooms The rooms are above the pub was shown to my room and then all info Unfortunately was told they weren't doing food that night, when asked if any places local was told a 40 min walk ! But I found a cool place ( tiny rebel) Room (6)was an ok size ,shower room was bigger but with a small corner shower Quite dated decor but I guess it adds to the charm of the pub ! Bed was comfortable WiFi good Shower was an electric one hot but not over powerful and when I stepped out the floor was flooded ! Location not much close by but a old canal which was lovely to run by Breakfast included but did me a takeaway sausage and bacon sandwich as always late for breakfast times ! Would probably stay again if in the area

Really enjoyed our meal, hospitality and atmosphere was really nice. We all had fish and chips, delicious! Very warm welcome By Mark, the Landlord and his staff. Service excellent, food piping hot and the pub is a really lovely setting. Plenty of parking spaces as well. all in all a really enjoyable lunch and will definitely be going back.

A great local pub. We popped in on our way by for the first time and we had a great experience. Great selection of drinks at reasonable prices. They do offer food but we didn't try any when we there but it did look good. They have plenty of seating inside and outside with a grassy area. Definitely will be back.

Food really quite good. I have no appetite atm but enjoyed my meal. Plus they do smaller portions for seniors. Good idea.

Seven of us visited today for a family Sunday Lunch - young and old ! Warm welcome from the landlord and the waitress was lovely . The Sunday roast was delivered super fast and piping hot. The portions plentiful and tasty . For £13 a head a real bargain ! Lovely and light with the new blinds . We all had a great get together over a great lunch - thanks very much !!!!

Went in with our 1 year old grandson. Very welcoming and attentive. We ALL enjoyed the meal.

What an awful pub to have lunch in. Curry portions would feed a small child . Bar staff including landlord very unwelcoming . I eat out a lot and travel around a lot , this place is the worst I’ve been to and won’t be returning . On the other hand Talulah the waitress was friendly and accommodating she was the only staff member doing anything from what I could see . Landlord treated us like children , we’re actually all nurses and would have expect the same courtesy and welcome we would give our patients. This is such a shame as the pub could be the centre of the community . It’s a lovely building with a conservatory with a garden and car park. Such a shame this landlord and his wife can’t see they’re pushing customers away with so many public houses shutting .

As a party of ladies, we’ve been to the rising Sun in previous years and have found it very inhospitable. However, we thought we would try it again today, no change. The proprietor was not friendly at all and one gets the feeling that he goes out of his way to make people feel unwelcome. . It was possible for all of us to be together on one table, but he insisted that three would have to be away from us on another. The food was nice, but the portion regarding the curry was a child’s portion. We will not be booking again at the rising Sun under this management. A real shame as it’s a nice pub but being run by a very unfriendly pair If this pub had pleasant helpful courteous people running it , what a difference it would make , sadley that is definitely not the case . We won’t be returning ! .

Traditional pub and restaurant with rooms. Stayed for one night for function in Newport. Lovely large comfy room, warm (a little too warm overnight so opened windows), reasonably priced, breakfast included. Service excellent.

Visit here weekly, most weeks. Roast dinners and curry are always lovely. Staff are always welcoming.

Stayed here for 1 night while working in the area rooms basic but clean can’t complain staff are all amazing and the food is fantastic I had lamb chops and it was one of the best pub meals I’ve had I will be staying here again if I’m working in the area in the future

It was a quiet late lunchtime so lack of atmosphere was really not their fault. Sign outside said 'food all day' but after we'd arrived they put up signs saying 'no food til 4' which doesn't seem like 'all day'....

When you walk in straight away there is someone there to take you to your seat which is fantastic if you want quick service.The lady who served us was named Alicia and she gave us awsome customer service, she took time to let us order and read the order out for no mistakes and was really helpful.The food was quick and took no time at all and it was amazing one of the best burgers I have had and the cooked dinner was great also.For what it is the pricing to portion ratio was perfect and affordable for most.Overall this experience was fabulous and would definitely recommend.

Hot lunch was cold, nice portion of beef but it doesn't make up for the fact that the meal was swimming in vegetable water, the Yorkshire pudding was at best 3 inch round and 1/2 thick. The meal was up there with one of the worst meals I've had. Did I complain yes I did, did they care No they didn't. I would do you a favour by Not recommending this place so you will not be as disappointed as I was. I really do struggle to find many good points except the outside area at the rear of the pub is quiet and nice to site on a sunny day, but don't have a meal where somebody will need to put a bit of effort or care and attention because they don't.

Had Sunday lunch today 7/10/2023 and was one of the best Lamb dinner I have ever had and the price was good well done to you all at the Rising Sun

Went to The Rising Sun last night. Had a great evening. Staff very friendly. Big shout out to Aleisha . Nothing was any trouble and all done with a big smile. We had The Friday Fish menu and I have to say it was amazing. Well cooked tasty and hot. Well done. Would certainly recommend. Met some nice people too.Will certainly be going back.

Contacted you today with regards to making a booking for a meal one evening this week, I spoke a gentleman and asked if we could be sat in a quieter part of the restaurant as my dad is currently undergoing chemo treatment for cancer, wow anyone would have thought I’d asked to be sat at the hand of god the way the man treated me. He informed me he couldn’t give me a separate room and he couldn’t say how busy you would be really your packed to the rafters on a Thursday evening at 6 are you?? Absolutely appalling service, I wouldn’t eat at your pub now if it was free.

There is nothing wrong with the pub, it's old fashioned and the clientele are older 60+ but the roasts are very good. Little advice though if the owner reads this try and up your own profits by adding cauliflower cheese or put the costs for additional stuffing balls or yorkshire puddings it's an upsell for you. Would also recommend slightly better dessert and vegetarian options but apart from that I go regularly and will continue to. Dog friendly but for anyone recommend booking Thankyou for a great roast rising sun

Fab cooked dinner and decent price.

Small but very good menu, fantastic flavours and well executed dishes. Nice rural pub feel in the front, beautiful dining area in the back in a two floor glass house. Well worth stopping in if you are passing.

This place is very dated for the price , rooms are old and worn down , finally got to sleep at 1 am after next door up showering etc, toilets are massurator so the noise is constant , food was OK and the staff were friendly . Would I stay here again ? No

Haven't visited the rising sun for a while, but it never disappoints. Walking in to find Rev James on tap could have been the highlight alone but the food was incredible. I had the black pudding stack for starters and the hunters chicken wellington for main. Both stunning, couldn't believe how big the wellington was. Will hopefully go back soon for more Rev James and another portion of the BBQ Chicken Wellington 😍

We enjoyed going back to this pub after about 15 years. Nice place to meet friends. Staff friendly and helpful.

Had a vegetable lasagne and lemon meringue pie here last week. Only two vegetarian main courses, which was a shame, but the lasagne was really good and all the puddings are listed as vegetarian. The service was top notch.

Oh dear what a hostile and unwelcoming place. e.g. No one said hello to our grandson e.g. You cant jhave your five pound deposit back for cues unless you get the white ball and chalk as well. Am 70 but treated like a 15 year old who would steal the white ball. Woman owner totally ignores you and struts around the place like a camp commandant.

From the telephone call to reserve a table, to leaving the premises, the staff were so friendly and helpful ;the restaurant has an informal and family atmosphere . I took my elderly Mother for lunch and we were made so welcome and received excellent service. We both opted for the smaller plate but portions were very generous as was the trifle we had for dessert. The steak/mushroom pie and lamb chops were delicious and the whole meal reminded me of “dinners from my childhood “. Nothing fancy, but wholesome tasty food and plenty of it. We will definitely return,when I am next ,visiting family.

Nice little restaurant. As soon as we entered we was shown our table. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. Made us feel welcomed and comfortable. The menu is limited and only 2 Vegetarian options available. I had the vegetable curry and my mother had the chicken curry. Was nice with a little kick of spice. Then my mum had triffle and I had chocolate fudge cake with ice cream. That was also nice but have tasted better else where but all together a nice little place to get together with family for a meal.

First time visiting here for Sunday dinner. Very nice dinner, friendly staff, good sized portions and will definitely return again.

My partner and I were looking for a new venue for a weekday lunch. We visited the Rising Sun, Rogerstone and found the staff to be both, warm and friendly. The service and food was excellent and we would certainly visit again and recommend it to family and friends. It was nice to see that they are still taking steps to reduce the risk of getting Covid which was reassuring.

Visited with my children to use the pool table, felt unwelcome and the staff kept looking over the balcony checking up on us. This is my second visit, the first was similar but with friends.

Great pub, great food and great welcoming staff

Looks very attractive from the outside, but very strange when you go in. The covid arrangements are still totally in place complete with one way system and all staff wearing masks. There was only one draft beer on tap I ordered a beef sandwich and a sherry trifle, a pint and a pot of tea for one. At £5.50 for the sandwich I expected the bread to be fresh: it wasn’t. It came with a small lettuce leaf, slice of tomato and a shaving of onion and carrot as a ‘garnish’. Presumably In a vain attempt to justify the exorbitant price. The bread had a miserly scraping of margarine, but in its favour was cut in triangles! The sherry trifle was tasteless and appeared to lack any sherry flavour at all. £18 later I was thinking that I wouldn’t be visiting again.

The staff here are really friendly and helpful, providing good size portions of fresh, well cooked food. Love it!

As part of a table of 12 celebrating a 40th birthday my family of 5, two of my adult children had ordered the vegetable curry, it came out as chip shop curry sauce with what I can only explain as yesterday's left over veg peas, carrots and sprouts!! I complained about the meal, the young girl who served was lovely but then the manager came over and was extremely rude and agreed to take the meals off the menu, when I went to pay only 1 of the meals was taken off and the man behind f the bar was also very rude. Myself and my daughter had mash potato which was extremely lumpy and watery. All the meals were of poor quality clearly using very cheap ingredients.

We visit the Sun quite often and the food is always excellent as is the service usually. Unfortunately on this occasion the service was very poor. - the waitresses seemed more interested in chatting with each other than actually doing anything. Let's hope it improves for the next time we visit.

This is the first time I have ever written a bad review, but I feel it is necessary to do so.My husband & myself travelled here & had booked an overnight stay as we were meeting family. The room was freezing with extremely draughty windows. We went to the bar & when I queried the wine the barmaid had poured she advised it was Stowells. Unfortunately this particular wine affects my asthma. I apologised & queried if there was any other wine. The barmaid was absolutely extremely rude. She said “that’s all we have & you will have to pay for it”. I stated I had not at any point said I would not pay. I was very upset at this point as I did not expect such an awful attitude. Also when you ask for wine it is usual to be ask which one you would like. Not the case here! We left the premises. I phoned & spoke to the “manager “ who was very arrogant to say the least & all he could say was “what about the food you had ordered & did not have?” No apology at all. Am not happy with how extremely rude they were & will definitely never go back & would not recommend this place at all.

Me and the wife hadn’t been here for quite a number of years we were in the area for a hospital visit and thought we would give it a try again and it was great With plenty of parking space outside Sunday lunch was buffet style with plenty of good quality food and a nice friendly serviceHighly recommended

Stopped of for a spot of lunch and have to say the Beef and Guinness pie was very nice indeed , and slow cooked meat with a choice of veg Inc chips. My partner had the chicken and sage with stuffing with plenty of veg.

Called in as friends had recommended, but on offer was food offered on a Hot plate and a limited menu otherwise.

Visited on a Wednesday evening. Spotted sign offering special offer before 7. Popped in at 6:55 and was told that the offer had ended. On explaining that it wasn't quite 7 I was curtly told you had to order before 5 to 7. Really!! Common sense would suggest that 'bending the rules' a little would have secured our business both on this and future occasions, now we won't be back and won't be recommending this establishment to friends. We live within walking distance and feel very let down by the service of what should be our local.

Called in for a weekday lunch. Plenty of space available in car park and in restaurant. Had lamb chops which melted off the bone. My friend enjoyed the beef in ale pie. Good atmosphere.

Decided to just pop in and see what was offer, the car park wasn't very full, so was very surprised to find the pub very busy, why? The hot counter was the reason, choice of two sized meals and six choices of mains from chicken pie, beef pie,currys,lamb chop and more. The choice of roasties, chips and several veg. All the staff were friendly and polite, we are glad we took the chance.

Had a very nice dinner with friends last week. What a great village pub, staff very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the vicinity.

I was most disappointed (despite being very happy on a previous occasion) with the standard of food given at the early bird discounted food. We had a Sirloin steak which was thin slice of meat clearly very dry and bland. The Seabass was battered, over priced and one tasted only a very oily batter rather than the fish. Wish I had ordered a cod battered which was 2/3rd the price. It was served with salad which I think was just chopped without any dressing. The onions were terrible included the base. No care taken for the two dishes we ordered.

The food is always lovely here and have never had a complaint, as Stan (the chef) is very good at what he does. The majority of staff are always polite and attentive, yet the young girl we had did not. She seemed to almost be lost, jumping from table to table before finishing what she was doing on the previous one. Didn’t seem to know what was being asked, even though I have seen her working here for some time.
