Reliably excellent pub serving food actually made in the kitchen at reasonable prices. Great selection of beers.

This is a very busy and well loved pub, by both drinkers, food lovers and dog lovers alike. They have numerous real ales on tap and always a few guest ales. A good and varied selection of spirits and wines, plus all the favourite soft drinks. There are multiple rooms and outdoor seating available. A small carpark but plenty of places to park on the street outside. AND dog friendly. On my visit I was celebrating a birthday and even on a Thursday evening, at 6.30pm, the place was full. We had pre-booked and this is advisable. We took along my small dog and she was fussed and greeted by both staff and other dog lovers on the next table. They too had brought their dog and this link created a pleasant chat with strangers. As we were eating, they questioned us about the food and I was happy to say how great the food is. I had a delicious pie of Steak, mushroom and stout, with vegetables and chips. The pie changes regularly and the waitress advises on the filling. My companion had a piri-piri chicken burger with chips. Both were large and tasty. The food is hot, and served by friendly staff, who despite being busy, are prompt and helpful. There are all the traditional pub options available, plus a menu which changes regularly. Currently there is a delicious prawn ndjuna risotto, a kedgeree, oat crusted cod, pork cheeks and other dishes. The starters and desserts are also home-made and delicious including carrot and parsnip bhajis, truffled celeriac soup, mackerel pate, and Yorkshire rhubarb crumble, drunken sticky toffee pudding, pecan and maple sponge with rum sauce plus others... They also do a delicious Sunday roast on the appropriate week day. All are a reasonable price. I would highly recommend this delightful pub for a drink or meal.... you won't be disappointed !!!

This place perfectly embodies what a pub should be in my eyes. The home-cooked food is excellent, with a menu that offers something for everyone. The beer line-up is fantastic, with Abbeydale Brewery taking the spotlight alongside a great selection of guest ales. If you can't find something to whet your appetite here, then perhaps pubs aren't your thing. But the real standout is the service—it's exceptional. You'll be served almost immediately, and the staff are always friendly and attentive. Get yourself down to The Rising Sun—you won't be disappointed!

Fantastic pint of moonshine, plenty of other choices but moonshine was lovely. Loads of outside seating, worth travelling to.

Popped in for Sunday lunch. Friendly staff and nice ambience. Had the roast chicken which is the best roast I’ve had for quite a while. Highly recommend this place. And dog friendly too

Superb real ale house extended some years back. As a John Smith's pub, it was my local from 1987 to around 2000 and that tap room holds some precious memories for me. Removing the bar is akin to taking posters off a teenager's bedroom wall!! That's why it gets 4 and not 5 stars!! 🤪

Great Guinness, and a very good Sunday Roast.

Fantastic range of beer from ABBEYDALE Brewery and very pleasant and friendly staff. We didn't have any food but the menu looked a little bit on the upper end of what I'd normally pay. Large pub with plenty of outdoor seating and a large car park. We called in halfway through walking an 11 mile circular covering moors, woodland and pretty valeys. It was CAMRA Pub of the Year 2023

Went in for lunch after a visit to Sheffield. Impressive selection of real ales , friendly bar staff . Didn’t get the lads name but tall with beard , looked after us well . I had the dark mild , lovely pint ! . The chips were excellent, proper homemade chips . The fish was also nice . Lovely atmosphere , I will return again .

A new chef but the same menu and kitchen team (we were told) so it is a reliable service and the food that we had on two occasions was really nice. Portions were generous and it came out in a timely fashion. We enjoyed the pies served with wonderfully traditional and tasty mushy peas, gravy and great chips. Deserts were also well made and interesting. Honey ice cream, pollen, limoncello lemon topping and lemon drizzle cake was delicious. We didn’t see a specials board and I am not sure how often the menu will change but we’re certainly looking to go back. The beers are hand pulled and we v much enjoyed our pints of Butterly bitter from Osset. We ate in a quiet back room but the main rooms were very busy with a really good buzz and a wide range of clientele of all ages.

The steak and mushroom pie was divine, totally recommend. The staff were so polite and friendly! The atmosphere was brilliant!

A can of cider was £5.00 in a walk back in time pub. I didn't feel as though I wanted to stay longer than the one drink on Sunday lunchtime.

Good service. Food was really not great. I may have been unlucky with my fish and chips, as the first couple of bites were inedible.

Very disappointed in the attitude and response of bar staff, when enquiring about gluten free food. All I could get in response is we cant guarantee on foods because of cross contamination. Which I understand but surely polite helpfulness would go a long way

Love this pub, but not impressed at being asked to move from the table we were on. Came in for drinks today with my parents, we sat on a table that had no reserved sign on, so was happy. We'd spent money on 3 rounds of drinks, then was asked to move by one of the bar staff, who'd apparently forgot to put a reserved sign on the table. We were directed into the other side, sitting on a table with 6 chairs....the exact same amount as the one we were moved from. I wonder of we'd have been asked to move if we'd have ordered food and were in the middle of eating?

Arrived 12.45 today (Saturday), ordered drinks then told they were too busy to serve food until 2pm! We needed to leave at 2pm and only needed sandwiches. Told too busy coz bookings at 1pm. PLEASE ASK IF CUSTOMERS WILL BE DINING BEFORE YOU TAKE DRINK ORDERS! Although you got an extra £20 out of us, we won’t return, and we’re big drinkers so you have lost far more. We left our drinks and had a far better customer experience at the Florentine.

As always... excellent food from their seasonally changing menu. I had the Deeeelicious Risotto full of yummy veg and goats cheese, whilst my friend went for the Rhubarb and Lentil curry with Paneer... of course I was obliged to try hers too!! Yum.... for dessert we both opted for the Chocolate sundae topped with homemade marshmallow sublime. Pair all this overload with an excellent local brew 6% IPA and I went home a happy bunny...... we will be back.

Day trip to Sheffield, popped in here for a bit of lunch, what a great pub, lovely staff and atmosphere, very welcoming, and to top it off great food and drink to match.

Even though it was rammed, efficient service without thinking you were waiting too long once. Excellent selection of larger and the best fish and chips I’ve had for years! Will definitely be coming back soon.

Visiting family in Sheffield for the weekend, we booked a table a table here based on it being local and having reasonable reviews. Very good selection of beers - Moonshine very nice. Meal was excellent- l had the fillet of cod with Arbroath Smokie sauce from the Autummn menu - sauce was very good. Staff friendly and welcoming and even better, no piped music in eating area so we could hear each other talk. I thoroughly recommend The Rising Sun if you are ever visiting the area.

This is a review about the pub for drinking not eating. The choice of beers is great,the way they are kept is perfect and the glasses are clean which is a rarity in a pub now( no bubbles on the inside of glasses ) plenty of staff ,so service is quick, perfect pub for drinks

Great selection of drinks/spirits, decent pub grub

Good selection of beers, but very underwhelming Sunday roast. For £16 I'd expect more that two thin slices of meat, of which the lamb was very fatty. And the "selection of seasonal veg" is just carrot and cabbage. Didn't live up to expectations at all. Wish I'd had the pie and chips but if you want that go to the Broady. And I know energy prices are high but would it kill them to put a few lights on? On the plus side the service was very friendly.

A popular place with locals and visitors. We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon to book a table for later in the evening and were greeted by a very friendly manager. He gave us a choice of areas and was really helpful. On our return we were shown to our table by another very friendly member of staff. The food was good quality, tasty pub food and good portions. There's several seating areas inside and a large outdoor garden at the rear plus a few benches at the front on the main road. We had a lovely evening and felt very welcome and well looked after. I would recommend booking ahead.

Had some great cask ales and the best fish and chips we've had for a long time. Just a pity it's a bit out of the way for us otherwise we would be regulars.

Had dinner at the pub this evening with family and friends. The chicken and asparagus pie was fresh and tasty. The kids loved the sausage and mash and puds!! The service was excellent and our server couldn’t have been more attentive, friendly and good with the kids. They accommodated some reasonable menu swap outs too which I always appreciate being on the fussier side. Thanks very much. We’ll be back again!!

Food good and convenient car park.

Three of us were there for lunch and two of us had a very disappointing meal. I asked for a salmon and prawn sandwich on brown bread but got it between two pieces of toast, so the salmon and prawn were soggy. The other person asked for a wrap and got his in a very dry bun. The service was slow and when I asked when we were giung to get our food it arrived straight away so must have been just waiting to be delivered. I certainly won't be going there again.

This is a pub, in Nether Green. They call the "Rising Sun". It's been the ruin of many a good man and oh God, I am one.

I know that a lot of people bemoaned the transformation of this pub into a gastropub some years ago, and while I agree it lost a little of its old character in the process, it still is a cracking boozer with a fantastic range of beer and really lovely food. Also, bonus points for handling Covid lockdown really well and making guests feel safe at that time.

Lovely burger and chips here. Love the atmosphere, great kids menu and mostly kid friendly. Excellent range of abbeydale ales and lager. Only criticism is the burger was very small in its bun, but still delicious. Love the smell as you come in, v family friendly pub.

Always a great beer to be had here.. unfortunately for me when I popped in with the dog, the kitchen was closed that lunch time😟..nay mind, we'll be back soon😁🍺👍

Good drink selection, family friendly and decent pub food.

We went when our heating was broken and it didn't disappoint. My feet and hands defrosted fairly quickly in the warm and the food was good. They even went out of their way to create a drink called benny and hot that we found is the unofficial drink of Burnley football club. Just what what needed for a cold day.

Very busy Sunday lunch, had to wait perhaps a little longer for food. Very good roast dinner. Excellent staff and ambience. Most enjoyable.

Fish and chips, used to be lovely, not anymore - if you like a giant frozen battered piece of cod and mushy peas that looks and smells like it’s been at the back of the fridge for weeks then this is for you. Be sure not eat something you don’t like the look of, even if you are starving. Apparently if it’s edible and you eat it, you can’t complain. Poor service, when this place has been so good for so long - a real shame, hope it’s nothing to do with a change of mgmt.

Had the kedgeree and pie of the day. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert. All dishes were absolutely delicious and the dessert was mind blowing. Sticky toffee is to die for.

Seems like a good Pub. I had two pints of bitters and a meal there. Meal prices are a bit high though. Any Pub meal over £10 is unnecessary in my opinion.

Wow the food here is lovely. The staff are happy and the place has a nice pup vibe. As an added bonus for the guys, you get to pee into a barrel in the toilets...
