Never again. This place has gone down hill faster than a wheel of cheese on a bank holiday. Used to be a kind place, used to be a nice place, a pub that used to be something. I wonder whether the landlord responds to reviews on their mobile in the pub haha!

After a Xmas concert at the City Hall we had a good finish in the Brown Bear. In spite of Sam Smiths imposition of the no phone rule, we couldn't take photos inside the pub. The Landlord was very friendly and apologetic and and took photos of us outside after so we had a drink, a laugh and a good chat to end our night.

The bar lady treated her staff member very badly in front of us whilst ordering, so it set us off with a really sour atmosphere. There is a no phone rule, which I’m all for, but my friend wanted to order a taxi home at night, the bar lady came over to say the no phone rule meant she’d have to both order the taxi and wait for it outside, even though it was near freezing. There was no understanding of our situation, it was handled quite rudely. The wine was really bad- there was only one type. No GF beers which is pretty backwards. I thought this was going to be a nice cosy pub but it’s not a very welcoming place & I no longer want to spend time here after experiencing how the bar woman was. No one should be spoken to in that way, it made me wonder how staff were treated when customers weren’t there.

As a Yorkshireman living in Kent for the last 35 years, I was in Sheffield for a graduation ceremony. Me and the wife came across this pub as we were looking for a pre dinner drink. The coal fires were blazing and it was very cosy. As someone who runs a couple of business's and is always on the phone it was nice to sit there drinking a pint of Sam Smith's bitter and just chat with no background noise. In fact we enjoyed it so much we went back the next night. I realise this is not everyone's idea of a good pub experience but give it a go and turn your phone off and talk.

The Brown Bear is a great little pub in the heart of Sheffield. I always feel very welcome in here and the staff are really friendly and will often chat. This pub is an excellent place to go when you want to sit and chat with friends for an evening. A good selection of Beers is available and at a fantastic price as well, certainly much better value than anywhere else in the area. I also love the fact in the winter that the fire is so welcoming and I also love the old Sheffield Theatre posters and photos that adorn the wall, well it is only around the corner from the theatres. If you are wanting a nice evening out with friends without being disturbed by loud music and people playing on their phones then the Brown Bear is the place for you as this kind of distraction isn't allowed in there. Overall I love the place and the landlord Ian and his partner Carrolyn have done a great job since taking over early in the year. It's a really great British pub.

The beer at this traditional pub in the centre of Sheffield was absolutely first class. My partner was so pleased he photographed the pint and a half we were drinking. He was then told by a member of staff that mobile phones weren’t allowed and pointed us at the signs on the walls and beer mats. I can understand that people working from laptops or tablets wouldn’t be desirable. But to include mobiles is a step too far. I think they have forgotten the meaning of hospitality. We finished our drinks and left.

Great pub if you like your foul language loud and clear. One woman shouted the c word on the next table, and 3 guys were stood at the bar effing this and effing that. Nothing done, despite there were three people serving behind the bar. And this was early Saturday afternoon! The toilets were a disgrace. they were in need of a good steam clean at least. thank God my visit was a one-off. This is not a hoax review. The guy constantly swearing was sat next to a table with dominoes table, talking to a guy with his back to the wall. The woman who swore loudly was on the big table further on from the bar to the left. The three guys you will be able to see at the bar, next to the door. I got in about 1.30. The man sat down was already there. The woman and the three guys came in after 2, and I left about 2.30.

We called in our tour of the top 15 pubs of Sheffield as published by the Sheffield Star (over 5 nights I have to add). What a dismal experience. Only one other couple in and it smelt awful. We wanted to have a photo in every pub so having read the review I asked if I could take a photo. Was told no. It was a brewery policy of no phones. I love the idea of a mobile phone free zone but didn’t understand why no photos. Makes me wonder how they were included in the list. The Sheffield Tap and Rutland hotel were both excellent - and busy for a Tuesday night. I wonder why????

I took some friends here on Wednesday of this week who were visiting from Manchester having told them it was a lovely traditional old pub. Oh my goodness how it has changed and most definitely not for the better. We were met by a very rude older lady whose appearance and personal hygiene left a lot to be desired, dirty uncombed hair and chewing gum with her mouth open whilst talking to us!! I asked for a rose wine, Pinot blush if she had one and a Zinfandel, she thrust the bottle towards me informing me “it’s a Sam Smiths pub” this is all we have! I then asked if she had a Chardonnay, I got the “Sam Smiths” speech again!! So in essence 4 of us went in and only 1 got a drink. As ladies all 65 plus We were made to feel very uncomfortable and most unwelcome. Having been a landlady I would have no hesitation in giving this woman her marching orders, that is if I had ever employed her in the first place. Sam Smiths brewery you should be ashamed that she is the face of what used to be a lovely pub!!

Staff wre pleasant ,while making sure people complied. If you want to use your phone there's a pub next door. I've never been a great fan of Sam Smiths but this was probably the best pint of mild I've had certainly in a long time. Served slightly chilled it was a delight - as was the price £2.20 a pint. We will certainly return next time we are in Sheffield.

Staff are not very bright and there are signs everywhere banning mobile phones, laptops, tablets or swearing. Poor atmosphere, poor choice of beers - one bitter (gas pump), one lager, one stout. Dingy decor. Signs everywhere (from where we sat I could see nine) instructing you not to use mobile phones. Some youngsters were taking the Mickey of this, having their photo taken next to signs, unnoticed by the land lady. She did however go over to tell off an old chap for momentarily looking at his phone (who protested he was checking his diary, she was frankly unpleasant in manner, he drank up and left). Not been here for years because of its miserable atmosphere and landlord, seems even worse now so won't be back. We drank up and left as well. Head of Steam nearby has a great beer selection.
