Used to go in Brown Bear years ago so thought we would pop in for a drink. There are no signs before you enter regarding not using phones. Ordered drink and sat down. Got my phone out to check any message as my Dad poorly moment. Straight away guy came over and told me off like being at school and said if I got my phone out again he would not serve me. As if I wanted another Saturday night and it was like a morgue. The most rude staff. Felt like going to bar, ordering multiple drinks and when it came to pay saying I pay on my phone and not allowed to get it out so where do we go from here!! Double standards!! Avoid!!

I would give it zero stars if I could. Went in for a quiet drink ( 4 pensioners) and got thrown out and nearly ending up fighting. Why - because we had the audacity to check for the bus times on my phone . Disgraceful. DO NOT GO. In the reply the pub says I was asked by a member of staff not to go on the phone, this was not the case it was mentioned by a customer that we should not be on the phone. However as mentioned I was only looking at the bus timetable which I had downloaded to my phone, there was no noise and I was not talking to anyone on the phone. If I had looked at a paper copy of the timetable would there have been such a fuss? Despite the no supposed phone policy you can use your phone to pay for items so it’s ok to use phone for certain things.

Me and my partner came in for a pint before going to miller and cartner. We were not aware of the no phone policy. When I came back from the toilets, my partner had told me of this rule. At first, I said “okay this is a good idea, fair enough” my partner went to the bar, and I could hear the bar staff and other customers talking about us. I felt very uncomfortable and believe it was due to our age. I felt watched like a hawk and all we came to do was come out for a drink on our date, which had completely dampened the mood. We could see the bar staff constantly checking in on us, and it was clear we were not welcome. I can see similar 1 star reviews. Not because of the rule, but how it was implemented. This is why there are over 40 1 STAR reviews, it’s a good system but just implemented in the wrong way.

What an awful pub, looks lovely from the outside, but as soon as you walk in it makes you want to shoot yourself. Like walking into a funeral home. You are met straight away by moody staff who have clearly never had a girlfriend in their lives. Rudely pressured my autistic girlfriend straight away for her ID. (She is 26 and we were with a group of older people Mums & Uncles & friends) He was so abrupt & rude. This put her off the pub straight away. “ID or out” he shouted and studied my girlfriends ID for a good minute when all he needs to see is that the DOB starts with “19” , but when a group of lads came in he was polite with them. Maybe an Andrew Tate supporter or something. So unprofessional and disrespectful in tone. We didn’t have a problem with the no phone policy, we actually quite enjoyed the thought of it, but I think you should be really telling your staff to practice what they preach and encourage a nice & social atmosphere. Again I will reiterate I don’t disagree with the importance of asking for ID but at least be polite when doing so! Must of been the landlady who kept coming and checking on us. Felt like children in a school. Moody moody person. Won’t be going back. Ps. Get some decent beer in 😂😂😂😂

The bar lady treated her staff member very badly in front of us whilst ordering, so it set us off with a really sour atmosphere. There is a no phone rule, which I’m all for, but my friend wanted to order a taxi home at night, the bar lady came over to say the no phone rule meant she’d have to both order the taxi and wait for it outside, even though it was near freezing. There was no understanding of our situation, it was handled quite rudely. The wine was really bad- there was only one type. No GF beers which is pretty backwards. I thought this was going to be a nice cosy pub but it’s not a very welcoming place & I no longer want to spend time here after experiencing how the bar woman was. No one should be spoken to in that way, it made me wonder how staff were treated when customers weren’t there.

The Brown Bear is a great little pub in the heart of Sheffield. I always feel very welcome in here and the staff are really friendly and will often chat. This pub is an excellent place to go when you want to sit and chat with friends for an evening. A good selection of Beers is available and at a fantastic price as well, certainly much better value than anywhere else in the area. I also love the fact in the winter that the fire is so welcoming and I also love the old Sheffield Theatre posters and photos that adorn the wall, well it is only around the corner from the theatres. If you are wanting a nice evening out with friends without being disturbed by loud music and people playing on their phones then the Brown Bear is the place for you as this kind of distraction isn't allowed in there. I took some friends here on Wednesday of this week who were visiting from Manchester having told them it was a lovely traditional old pub. Oh my goodness how it has changed and most definitely not for the better. We were met by a very rude older lady whose appearance and personal hygiene left a lot to be desired, dirty uncombed hair and chewing gum with her mouth open whilst talking to us!! I asked for a rose wine, Pinot blush if she had one and a Zinfandel, she thrust the bottle towards me informing me “it’s a Sam Smiths pub” this is all we have! I then asked if she had a Chardonnay, I got the “Sam Smiths” speech again!! So in essence 4 of us went in and only 1 got a drink. As ladies all 65 plus We were made to feel very uncomfortable and most unwelcome. Having been a landlady I would have no hesitation in giving this woman her marching orders, that is if I had ever employed her in the first place. Called in after a show in Sheffield. Big mistake. The outside looks like a cosy old character pub inside is old, cold, unwelcoming and very weird. Staff are not very bright and there are signs everywhere banning mobile phones, laptops, tablets or swearing. I get that too many people are on their phones but they actually shouted at a customer for looking at his phone. No music, no atmosphere no fun. To top it all the toilets stink of urine. Worst pub ever!

Poor atmosphere, poor choice of beers - one bitter (gas pump), one lager, one stout. Dingy decor. Signs everywhere (from where we sat I could see nine) instructing you not to use mobile phones. Some youngsters were taking the Mickey of this, having their photo taken next to signs, unnoticed by the land lady. She did however go over to tell off an old chap for momentarily looking at his phone (who protested he was checking his diary, she was frankly unpleasant in manner, he drank up and left). Not been here for years because of its miserable atmosphere and landlord, seems even worse now so won't be back. We drank up and left as well. Head of Steam nearby has a great beer selection.

They're a bit too strict about their digital detox policy but you can't complain when the beer is £3. Very local and traditional vibe, unique spot serving Samuel Smith beers.

Cherry beer is awesome. As a millennial I’ve never been to a pub without having my phone glued to my hand, but it was actually good to play cards whilst having a chat. I’ll be visiting again soon!

Visited here after a stunning trip to the theatre….. shouldn’t have bothered. Clue was that it wasn’t busy on a Saturday night in the middle of a city centre. Big signs saying no phones or laptops and a no swearing policy . Witnessed a customer being asked to put his phone away as trying to order a taxi which caused an awkward atmosphere . Also no music allowed….. should put a sign up saying no fun allowed,

Got a telling off for having my phone out by the miserable land lady. But it was OK for one of the regulars (an intoxicated woman) to be effing and blinding at the top of her voice and even flashing people! Rules are rules fair enough but clearly they don't apply to the regulars...

No phones allowed. Pathetic if you’re on your own having a quick pint. Nothing to look at except the miserable landlady. Won’t return. I was allowed to pay using my phone though…

Mobile free area - it's a nice idea. Did see someone get shouted out for having their phone out because they didn't know about it's. Seemed a bit unsure when I please put your phone away would have done. It's seems a bit of a locals pub. It's not a nice inside.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience in this cafe. The service was not up to the required level and the welcome was not good at the reception. I hope you will re-emerge the worker you have there. Thank you.

Rachel and the team provided a friendly and high quality service. It's clear a lot of effort is being put into this pub to provide a good experience to it's patrons, live singers, quizzes, karaoke and other events. It's so nice these days to have a proper pub thriving, filled with people and everyone chatting to each other. The team were also great with my dog providing water and lots of attention so he had a great experience too. Definitely coming again!
