Great pub, lovely Sunday roast! Great service - recommend you book as it gets busy and you want to get there early to get a car parking space as it’s not big and gets full quickly. Lovely roast - choices of nut roast, beef, chicken and others :)

A one night stop on a bikepacking trip which would take me over The South Downs Way. I booked a room for one night and arrived mid-afternoon on the Saturday of the Easter weekend. I was greeted by one of the bar team who was friendly and helpful. I was able to store my bike securely while I stayed overnight. After a shower I was down to the bar for a well earned drink. It was a friendly and sociable atmosphere and I got chatting with some of the locals. I booked a table for 6.30 and ordered the scampi and chips. A really tasty meal with a decent sized portion. A good nights sleep and I was up at the crack of dawn in preparation for another long day in the saddle. I was greeted by the landlord / landlady team who had prepared a superb breakfast of fresh fruit, granola / cereal and a cooked breakfast of my choice ( I chose scrambled eggs on toast). In summary, a really great place to stop off if you are walking or cycling this part of the world. Really friendly team and some great food which was really reasonable. Thanks everybody for looking after me !

Heard lots of positive comments from friends about their roast dinner and decided to go today and they were right. The most generous and delicious roast I’ve had in any pub in Sussex. I couldn’t fault any of it and the staff were spot on as well. Plus the landlord was dishy. Highly recommend.

Bar staff were sweet but clearly short staffed and couldn’t manage serving at bar and tables. 45 minutes wait for food that wasn’t that tasty to be honest. Potatoes clearly frozen, cauliflower cheese overcooked and cabbage also looked frozen. Meat wise you only got 2 slices - for just short of £18 a roast I’d expect a lot better

Based on the favourable reviews my wife and I took a detour from our walk along the River Arun to have an impromptu lunch. There was a very friendly vibe as I ordered drinks at the bar. We placed our food order - it took quite a time for the food to arrive although this was not a problem as we were in no hurry. My wife ordered a baked Camembert with a side salad - this was from the selection of starters and came up large. She has a small appetite and this was more than ample to provide for a filling meal. I went for home cured ham and eggs on a bed of bubble and squeak. This was an interesting mélange off ingredients - including stuffing which made it more savoury. I very much enjoyed this meal - it really hit the spot. We didn’t have enough room for desserts although there was plenty of hot and cold options if we had. We found the staff to be particularly friendly and helpful. It made for a very pleasant dining experience.

I'm very lucky to have the RS as my local and have to support everything Andrew P has stated except that the Fish and Chips are the best I have ever tasted and once tried you will not want to have anybody elses, especially at the price the RS charge and only £8.50 on a Wednesday. I cant believe the comments of 600moo.............. perhaps their name is a giveaway. The owner Barry is like a big bear who loves to be cuddled and have a drink and a chat, the bar staff are great but didn't realise that Kerry has his own fan club !! we all love you, the chef/cook Amy makes unbelieveable pastry and Barry's wife Sue is there to support and start the dancing, (oh yes they have live music to) and cooks when Amy's not around and has been known to like the odd JD and coke. This all makes for a wonderful atmosphere, a good mixture of regulars who all have a laugh, a drink, argue, tell jokes and probably drink too much because the atmosphere and friendliness makes you feel at home. My wife always says we will just have one drink and on her fourth there is no stopping her. Do pop in as this pub is a hidden gem of Upper Beeding, if you don't agree , please let me know as you've obviously gone to the wrong pub. Lots of Love to All and especially the Staff and Regulars of the Rising Sun. Happy Easter

I have to agree with previous review regarding this pub as there are much better ones within walking distance of this pretty part of Sussex. My family and I came in last week after a walk around the river, it was cold so we took the kids in to warm up . On first glance it is a standard style public house but we found the atmosphere oddly oppressive with some of the locals perched at the bar peering at us as if we had two heads ! Perhaps they don't get out of the bar as often as they should !! ?

I love this pub having moved into the village three years ago. I've eaten here many times, the roasts are excellent on a Sunday and the week time food is wholesome, fresh cooked and large. We ate here often and the sunday roasts are good and we loved the bubbly hospitality of Sue on the bar however , during the week this usually decent pub turns into stop gap for Red top scaffolders who take up the bar area and make it awkward to pass through . That said , its not the worst thing in the pub , thats down to the meagre menu and appalling food . We received our orders in good time only for the waitress to disappear completely , the barman was busy entertaining the ' red tops " at the bar and the condiments were no where to be seen so I popped my head into the kitchen door to find the waitress and to ask for sauce , the woman in there shouted at me to get out! which i thought was a but rude but i guess she had something to hide and she did . .... The macaroni was over cooked like some nasty microwaved stodge and when I complained to the bar man , the sweaty landlord came from no where and shouted at us in front of the whole pub and told us not to come back , it was humiliating and unprofessional and I'm not surprised that its local popularity is declining rapidly . On the plus side , the ale is good but once a fat man shouts at you in front of other customers its a 1 rating only.

The décor was rather characterless and ordinary compared with many other pubs in the area. The food was unimaginative but perfectly OK and adequate. My wife and I had been invited to Sunday lunch with friends who had to cancel at the last minute. We duly landed ourselves upon Barry and Sue at the Rising Sun, who despite all the tables being occupied or reserved, found us a table. The atmosphere was busy but very friendly. The tables are situated and spaced nicely so as not feel you are sitting on top of other diners. The Sunday lunch menu concentrates on doing home cooking well. I opted for Beef and the good lady wife for the Pork. Both were excellent. All of the vegetables had full flavour and the roast potatoes in particular were crispy and fluffy with my suspicions being that they had been cooked in Beef dripping or Goose fat. There was an option of 5 desserts. With both of us opting for the Sticky Toffee Pudding one with cream and one with custard both variants did not disappoint. With main courses coming in at under £10 each the value is excellent also. A big, thank you to all at the Rising Sun for making what could have been a miserable Sunday afternoon a delight.

Having been let down by another nearby restaurant , I rang The Rising Sun who told us that if we could get there within the next 20 minutes they would happily accommodate us. We just about made the deadline and found a very helpful , cheerful landlord who sorted us out with a table , made recommendations about what to order and advised us what was already sold out . We made our choices and placed our order , the girl behind the bar said there may be a bit of a delay with the food as they had been quite busy . Their idea of a delay is my idea of speedy service . The food was great , wholesome and decent portions , macaroni cheese and steak and stilton pie were particularly tasty . After lunch , and a few more pints , the landlord showed us the " pill box " in the garden that they had recently restored . It was a great end to a day that could have been a bit of a disaster . It is a thoroughly decent pub , nice regulars , nice staff and good value for money . Highly recommended

We were visiting Upper Beeding which is quite picturesque , lots of different styles of old houses along the High Street. Looking for a pub lunch in a garden there were three choices - the Castle Hotel , Kings Head and Rising Sun.The Castle had posh sunshades but the garden was quite full. The Kings Head was very noisy with children since there was a play area at the back. The Rising Sun was quieter and more modern in style but best rated on Tripadvisor. It's obviously the locals pub - everyone seemed to know everyone else. Landlord was very friendly and accommodating and the serving staff were bright and cheerful. Food was good , proper chips , fresh salad , and beer was Harveys Best. The garden area isn't huge but we were well pleased we went there.

We dined in the pub that evening, which was standard pub food but good quality, breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Just what you need to set you up for a days walking. Good value for money, would recommend.

Very impromptu visit. Train issues resulted in The Husband picking me up from Brighton and as it was a nice evening, we decided on the 'scenic' way home. I had been on a slight detox that day, so had only been consuming 'liquid' foods...but was suddenly very hungry...so we decided to stop at the Rising Sun, a pub we had passed many times but never visited. As we stepped into the bar we found a small but very friendly room. Some village pubs can be a bit daunting if ypu are not a regular.....sudden silence and suspicious glances..'oooh, look a "stranger" but not the Rising Sun. The regulars were cheerful and chatty, the bar staff very helpful and cheery. All in all very welcoming. We asked for recommendations for food and this proved difficult to pin down as the general reaction was perplexed looks and "well, it's all nice". Homemade by 'Sue' apparently. We had sausage and chicken cassarole which came with mash and peas in a HUGE bowl and the macaroni cheese (ham added for an extra £1) which came with what looked like homemade garlic bread, a pot of tea and a large glass of wine. The bill? £24.90. Bargain. We were served by a very attentive ypung man and there was a check halfway through to make sure everything was ok (which is most definately was!). We will definately go again should we be in the area and hungry...or maybe if we have visitors and want to treat them! If I need to put something that was a bit of a drawback, it would be that the car park is quite small, so got filled up very quickly and we got blocked in, bit the owner of the car blocking us was quickly located and we were on our way home in less than 5 minutes.

We have been here on three occasions and everytime we have been very pleased so we will definitely be returning. We have been twice at sunday lunchtime and last night with my friend (a Monday night) so experienced different times of the day and busy periods. The food is lovely, large portions and very well presented. The food is also very well priced -good size main meal between £8-£10. The staff were all very polite and didn't pester at all for next courses or wanting us off the table. There were also a few locals in the pub who kept themselves to themselves and weren't worried about having others in the pub -not the sometimes typical glare you may get walking into 'their pub' with a 3 year old :-) . My daughter loved it and although she is well behaved out and about they were not worried by her at all. Definitely recommend to others and will be back again!

This pub is a proper local, serving affordable good food and offering good entertainment such as bands and an annual beer festival with a music stage. Always welcoming and warm.

We drive past this pub most weekends, so thought it would be an ideal place to stop off for lunch. We booked a table having not been before and I’m glad we did, because within half an hour every table was taken. It’s a traditional pub, with a warm, cosy and relaxed atmosphere. We’d decided to visit on a Sunday so we could sample the roast dinner and we were not disappointed. A lovely home cooked meal, with plenty of fresh veg and good portion sizes – for those with not such a big appetite, you can opt for a smaller portion! However, for us it was fine and we even managed to squeeze in a dessert. The landlord was very friendly and popped over to our table just to make sure everything was ok for us, which added a really nice personal touch.Good food, friendly atmosphere, reasonably priced – we shall definitely return!

Have not visited this pub previously but on recommendation I arranged a Sunday lunch for eight people and was amazed at the quality, amount, presentation and value for money of all the meals we enjoyed. The atmosphere is good and all the staff were very friendly. The sweets were also excellent. I will certainly be going there again.

The Rising Sun at Upper Beeding hosted a Beer Festival , the Landlord & Landlady are the most amazing hosts, laying on Bands , we sat in the garden and had a Sunday Roast. Ive had them here before, and they never disappoint, If you like a good home cooked roast with the best Roasties, fresh veg and a gravy you would be happy to drink out of a mug, then this is your place. The portions are Large, but smaller ones available on request, and an excellent price.

Would not have thought of trying out this pub if it wasn't for the fact we won a raffle prize for 4 people to have Sunday Lunch here , donated by the lovely owners in aid of St Barnabas Hospice.Excellent quality food, beautifully cooked, friendly welcoming owners and staff. The lamb shank was tender and succulent, veg beautifully cooked and as for the Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard...really sublime!!! We shall definitely come again.

We stopped here overnight whilst walking on the South Downs. Very friendly, excellent value for money. Simple well cooked pub food at sensible prices. Fish and Chips were first class. Good range of beers and a nice local pub atmosphere. Rooms were clean and adequate and a very good cooked breakfast. We also had packed lunches for an extra £5 which were just right. Nice people, nice place, nice price.

The atmosphere was welcoming warm and friendly. The menu was designed to suit everyone’s taste. We both had Stilton and broccoli soup which was very tasty and sufficient as a starter. The haddock and triple cooked chips were devine. The batter was light and tasty. The whole meal was superb and well priced. Sadly the heavens opened, but the bar manager went the extra mile by driving us back to our hotel in the village. What more could you ask for? British hospitality at its best. We certainly didn’t expect such kindness and compassion. Thank you SO much.

Oh Dear! What has happened here? Went with a group of friends for Lunch which we had done earlier in the year when we had a superb meal . The menu was imaginative, food well cooked and presented and we were expecting a similar experience BUT the menu now presented was a great disappointment. No starters on offer , a very basic menu with little choice of dishes requiring no skill to produce . Three specials which were not special-more basics . What we had was OK and the service was pleasant and helpful but we will not return unless a more interesting menu does. The choice in Henfield is becoming more and more limited.

Went to the Crown Inn for a family meal. It was Saturday evening but not too busy. All five of us enjoyed our food, especially three of us that had the Sussex Smokie. The other dishes, as well as the starters were also excellent. The Inn has a traditional country pub atmosphere and the service was good.
