This is a lovely, friendly, welcoming village pub, with a large outside area, perfect for an al fresco tipple and outside events. Laura and her team are brilliant, offering various events throughout the year, from a Christmas Market, to special occasions such as the Coronation and fundraisers for good causes, karaoke and live music. The monthly quiz night is another highlight and very well done, with a yummy cheese and charcuterie board included. A great night enjoyed by all. Details of events are on Facebook.

We stayed at the RNLI for the weekend and had always wanted to eat at the Rising Sun, despite all the tables being booked for 7.30, the manager suggested we could arrive early at 7 as the table was not rebooked until 8.30. meal sorted, we order pork scratching and artisan bread....the pork scratching with dipping apple sauce was to dive for even thought there was more than enough to eat. however the artisan bread was dry! My husband had the fish and chips which he described as amazing even thought there were too many chunky chips on the plate. I order the 'Black and blue' burger..........OMG! the burger sat on a field mushroom, with a topping of stilton blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and all this was in a bun!!!!! an enjoyable evening although my husband high jacked the candle so that we could actually see each other. great value.... great food. would highly recommend it.

I'm amazed that I had missed this place after many years visiting Poole and hope to return many times. A group of us were 'gazumped' by another restaurant and I found this on Trip Advisor. The many positive reviews say it all: a cosy, intimate and welcoming space with very efficient and pleasant staff. The menu caters for all tastes and budgets despite being what I would class as top-quality accommodation and decor. I enjoyed the starter special of chorizo and halloumi fritters then was bowled over by the pan-fried sea bass fillets on a crayfish risotto. Great wine card at reasonable prices. A great find: thank you.

We went there on a midweek & it was half-full so not a bad sign & offers a very nice large bar lounge area with pleasant seating & subdued effective lighting. However when we booked earlier on the phone they really wanted us all there by 8.30pm, any good Gastro-Pub should really have last orders at 9.30, we did feel a little under pressure to order quickly with menus quickly supplied once we arrived, so presumed the chefs want to get home early, not a good starting sign. The menu is effective & varied, the food was of good quality & obviously freshly cooked to order, the only downside being all the hot starters & main courses were all served on cold plates ? The young staff were friendly, the restaurant area most pleasant & spacious, no problem with the venues ambience, the food was good quality if a little expensive, altogether a very nice pub / restaurant. The restaurant was totally empty by 9.45, so presume that if the owners stayed open a bit later for food orders they would take much more over the till, we were not offered coffee or liqueurs so had to order them. If the waiting / bar staff had a bit more customer training, I am very sure it would be much busier, it ticks all the right boxes.

It was the first time we'd ever heard of The Rising Sun. I wasn't sure what to expect but I have to say, in all honesty, it was the best wedding reception I had ever been to. The food was outstanding and the venue, just perfect. Maybe it wasn't as traditional as some weddings, having recently attended another wedding reception held at a very prestigious location, but I felt it to be a more relaxed and therefore more enjoyable. Due to the success, a few weeks later we booked a table for a Saturday evening meal with some friends. Again, the food was exceptional and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Lived here all my life and this was my first visit to The Rising Sun! Inside was just as homely as a pub could be, lots of wood, mirrors, low lighting - very cosy and clean! Set on slightly different levels you will find two or three steps up or down to each. Each and every one of the staff were particularly friendly and welcoming and service was neither too fast or too slow, nice clean glasses and crisp white linen napkins :) I started with the thai fish cakes and dip which were tasty and fiery. Now here is the thing......I never eat steak in a pub.......hardly ever. I just cannot bear to crunch on fat! However, our friends said the steak was good so I gave it a go and am extremely glad I did. Cooked to perfection, I teamed it with a blue cheese sauce which was creamy but still had that sharp taste, sautéd new potatoes and a mixed vegetable of the day which was delicious. Not that I had much room for dessert but managed to fit in a key lime pie! I am so very impressed with this restaurant, there are not many anymore which pay attention to detail in all aspects of your evening out - ambience, service AND food. I would recommend The Rising Sun and will certainly go back for a repeat performance!

I had the pleasure of dining here in September. I was alone and the staff were really thoughtful in making sure I sat somewhere I was comfortable. The barman remembered my name from speaking to me on the telephone...a very good start I thought.I was offered a choice of tables and a newspaper which I thought was very thoughtful of them.I was guided through the menu, as I have a tendency to over order....eyes bigger than tummy!!. I settled on moule mariniere to start and roast guinea fowl stuffed with wild mushrooms and sausage meat...my god it was the most gorgeous food I have ever tasted and over the years I have eaten out a great deal. I had a half of lager and the bill came to around £23 total bargain for such brilliant food. They also have a good sized garden at the back with comfortable chairs and heater and decorated with fairy lights. There is also seating at the front. This pub is about 10 minutes walk from the harbour and was ideal for me as I was staying at the RNLI college about two minutes walk away. I wish it was nearer to where I live!!!

Paul and his team were absolutely amazing from when we booked the venue to the day itself. We had exclusive use of the venue, were able to put together our own menu, decide on our drinks and how everything was to be set out - nothing was too much trouble. More expensive venues will not give you that much freedom. Our guests were stunned by the quality and presentation of the food, the service was perfect and we couldn't fault a thing. Lots of our guests even said they can't wait to go back to the Rising Sun and some already have.We would recommend the Rising Sun without hesitation, not just as a wedding venue but as a place to eat and drink. Super fresh Dover Sole straight off the boat that morning, sea bass fillets and risotto. All excellently cooked. The service was exceptional and the wine list good & reasonable prices. Nice atmosphere and decor.

In most restaurants you either have good service and rubbish food or vice versa, but not here. The service was excellent from start to finish, and the food sublime. I have had many fillet steaks but this had to be top of my list, it was melt in the mouth and as for the desserts, well I ordered a second!! With a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere it did not dissappoint. I would recommend this restaurant to anybody and I will 100% be returning again.

Staying in Poole overnight and happened to find the Rising Sun - and excellent find. Great welcome although we hadn't booked. Aperitif on the terrace followed by a very good meal, fish dishes well cooked. All the staff were friendly without being over bearing. Reasonable pried food and very good value wines. When next in Poole will definitely visit again.

Four of us went for dinner on a Saturday night. Good atmosphere ans staff very friendly. Drinks very expensive as was the food. Ordered a medium fillet steak which came very well done. Staff were apologetic and replaced meal but after a long time time it was served absolutely raw! They didn't charge for it but it was too late to order anything else. Evening ruined. If they are going to charge premium prices for pub food then they should be able to cook a steak to order!

Poor service, mistake after mistake and the state of the place is appalling. Cold food, wrong orders, the staff could not have cared less.

My partner and I used to be regulars here but hadn't been for several years. We went for lunchtime drinks. The pub was busy. As we approached the bar the landlord greeted us in a booming gruff unfriendly voice. He curtly directed us to a high table with stools rather than a nearer more convenient table with chairs saying we would have to sit there. For the hour and a half or so that we were there, no one else sat at that table. After a round of drinks, we ordered a portion of chips. The Landlord, Graham, took the order and abruptly said "I don't know when you'll get them!" However, they were not too long coming, which, turned out to be a pity. I have never had chips like them, and I speak with some authority. They were so sodden with oil that my fingers quite literally dripped with it. When the waitress, Amanda, came to our table we showed her the bowl of saturated chips. She was very sorry that we had been so disappointed and apologised unreservedly saying that no one had complained before. She kindly refunded the cost of the chips. Later in the evening, both my partner and I felt queasy and sick, no doubt the result of our unexpected lunchtime ingestion. Darren and Maggie, the managers, came across as unprofessional, both in their dress and demeanour. I doubt we'll be returning any time soon.
