Firstly update your website and sign that says you serve food when you don’t. Secondly Having pointed out that my pint of Stella was not very nice I received no response what so ever, not even a sorry. Don’t think I will call hear again, appear to only care about the locals. Obviously don’t welcome new trade.

Nestled in the charming village of Shackerstone, The Rising Sun is a delightful find that offers a quintessential English pub experience with a touch of warmth and character. From the moment you step through the door, the cozy ambiance and friendly atmosphere make you feel right at home. The pub itself is a blend of traditional and contemporary styles, with exposed wooden beams, rustic decor, and comfortable seating. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time while enjoying good conversation and a few pints of local ale. The staff at The Rising Sun deserve special mention. Their genuine warmth and attentiveness add to the overall experience, ensuring that every visit feels special. Whether you're a local or just passing through, you'll be treated like an old friend. The Rising Sun also boasts a lovely outdoor seating area, perfect for those sunny days when you want to enjoy your meal or drink in the fresh air. The views of the surrounding countryside are simply stunning, adding to the pub's appeal as a destination for both relaxation and indulgence. we were informed that the kitchen hasn't been open for 12-18 moths, but they have pop up food nights. the next being the 23rd August 2024.

Not sure what’s happening with this place. Certainly the reviews here don’t backup my experience. We arrived at 6pm on a Friday for an evening meal having seen the many signs along the Ashby Canal advertising this place and also based on their website and indeed the glowing reviews here on Google. The barman told us they were not doing food anymore as they hadn’t had a chef for weeks. Odd considering their reviews. 🤔 We had one drink and left. In fairness the beer was well kept and very good, but we were starving and wanted to eat. Don’t rely on their website, on closer examination it hasn’t been updated for years - it’s still using the old http format. They haven’t updated their Google entry either. My advice would be to phone them first before visiting as customer communication on the web is not their strong point.

There's 10 of on a long bank holiday weekend on 5 narrow boats. I called the rising sun at quite short notice considering it's Easter and they luckily could accommodate us. The food was really nice. I had the garlic and coriander prawns to start they were spot on. Others had the mushroom bruchete and my partner had the chorizo. everyone was happy. I had the lamb main (perfectly pink) with a beautiful selection of vegetables and a gert big Yorkie. My mate had the belly pork with perfect crackling (I was a bit jealous of her crackling. So I'll be back). All finished off with some yummy puddings. A really great Easter Sunday

Walked along the canal for Sunday lunch at the Rising Sun at Shackerstone. Catering is now done by "Ben's Kitchen", presumably leaving the pub owners to focus on the pub. Enjoyed our beer and really enjoyed the roast lamb. Lots of different vegetables and potatoes to go with the roast lamb and Yorkshire pudding. Great starters and puds too (for those that still had room). Good service, including the resident "little helper". Overall one of the best Sunday pub lunches we've had for quite a while.

No food! Touring on the canal and we were starving after a long hot day, the canal guide has this pub serving food, the website says it serves food, albeit pizzas and the signs on the bridges over the canal advertises it as having food. So after ordering the drinks I asked for a menu to be told bluntly ‘We don’t do food’ So if you want a rather ordinary pint of beer go to the Rising Sun, if you want food look elsewhere and hopefully they will amend the website and take the signs of the bridges!

The pub as a pub is perfectly satisfactory. Unfortunately what with the price of gas the pub no longer does food. It does host the "pop up" restaurant thing and allows a local fish and chip van to park outside. Also allows a kebab and pizza man to use their pizza oven facilities in garden area. Might be a good wheeze to look at their website for dates of above.

I understand that the chef was incapacitated so only pizzas were being sold. We were a group of four. Whilst the pizza base was lovely, the pizzas served up bore no resemblance to the website photos. Really light on cheese and undercooked. The prices were wrong too. For example the vegetarian pizza advertised for £9 actually cost me and extra £6 . The blackboard in the bar stated that price was £8 plus £1 for extra toppings I.e mushroom, tomato, jalapeños , onion etc. My pizza was missing the jalapeños and all the extra toppings were light on quantity . I couldn’t complain as the bar was really busy and we would have just been kept waiting for new pizzas to be cooked. I guess customers should just be aware that this wasn’t the best pizza in town. The pub however is lovely and the Morris men provided their usual entertaining performance.

Visited this pub with my wife, she stayed sitting outside and I ventured into the bar to order drinks. I was met with a steal faced barmaid that looked like she had last smiled in 1982! She had no manners, Was not welcoming! I made the mistake of asking for a bottled Koppenberg, she rudely pointed at the 5 or 6 beers and ciders on tap and said that’s all We Have got! When I said that this was one of the poorest selections of drinks she just tutted and said what do you expect! We Are a local pub! The whole experience was completely unacceptable! Some of the poorest service I can ever remember! With regards to food I remember taking my mum and my wife here 3 years ago for Sunday Lunch! We sat down for around 15mins no one Acknowledged us, no one took drinks orders and there were no menus on the tables. In the end we walked out as the place just looked like no one cared!!! Maybe this pub should just be left for the locals!! Such a shame in this day and age that owners are allowed to let country pubs run like this!!!!!

After another round of drinks and enquired about the pizza that eventually arrived at 7.23 only 1 hour and 28 minutes later and presented with a under cooked below average pepperoni pizza that I wish I had taken a photo of very disappointed with the food and service would not recommend

We arrived and ordered at 6:40 and did not receive our food until 8pm. We had tried to book a table inside but were told it was fully booked inside although it was practically empty the whole 2 hours we were there (although there were people outside) The waitress was rude. She singled us out as young couples to make us pay as soon as we had ordered. I can understand concern that people may leave without paying when sat outside but they did not do this to any of the surrounding tables. The burgers were wet, the lasagne was dry and crispy, the nachos had practically no toppings. All had clearly been sat under a heat lamp for a long time. We had to ask multiple times where our food was and told twice that we were next in the queue before another waiter finally told us that there was a wait and apologised. Would not recommend. I can guarantee that the meals we received were not worth the wait we had or the price we paid.

Called in for lunch today, having not visited this pub for a number of years.Lunch is now served in the bar area, so you eat listening to cross bar conversations - today on the subject of rat catching! There is a reasonable choice on the menu, however, having been made to feel less than welcome when we arrived, no sooner had we sat down than the bar lady came over 'Just to say there's no soup, the chef hasn't put it on yet and there's no fish cakes' A 'sorry' at this point might have been appropriate, but was not forthcoming. The food we ordered, when it arrived, was nicely served by a pleasant lady, but the whole unwelcoming experience means we are not likely to return!PS The restaurant area looked nice, though obviously not in use at lunch times.

Two of us arrived without a booking mid-week and were seated quickly and easily. The waitress was lovely and took our drink orders quickly (we both ordered gin, myself a bakewell gin and my friend a pink gin). They have a good selection of gins and the waitress was able to list them for me to decide from.We both chose to order the fish and chips which was exceedingly tasty and very filling - I ordered mine with coleslaw on the side and could barely manage to even touch the coleslaw. That didn’t stop us from ordering dessert though, both of which we enjoyed. My friend had the banana split, and I had the brownie. I chose to have custard with mine but in hindsight it would have been better with a cold topping as the brownie was a little too soft to be hot, if that makes any sense. The location is idyllic, and the building itself looks exactly as it should - old-timey, suited to its village surroundings. An overall pleasant experience.

We visited for lunch on a nice sunny day. Friendly, helpful service from both ladies on the bar and in the restaurant. Good beer, huge home cooked fish finger sandwiches that were more like a full piece of battered cod with coleslaw and nicely dressed salad. Fat chips as a side.Only complaint was that the outside tables were really dirty with leftover food, ash and bird muck. It didn't look like they had been wiped in weeks, in contrast to the inside restaurant which was immaculate The tables around the outside bar were even worse with presumably unwanted salad all over the floor. I wouldn't visit again because of this, which is a shame.

The food was good and worth the money in good surroundings no complaints. However when we finished the meal the women who collected the plates even though there was food left did not ask if everything was OK (nobody did not ask during the meal) so I had to make a comment on the accompaniment on the salad saying the dressing was too sweet for my taste, the answer it does state on our side orders dressed salad, but this wasn't a side part of the meal. I would have left it there but she had to make a snide remark that oh chef apologises but it does say dressed salad, I will admit with a reply saying you should state what kind of dressing. It was a shame but she unfortunately spoiled an otherwise good meal, we would go back if it w as guaranteed she would not be on duty.

We have been to the Rising Sun many times over the years and have had some lovely meals but this was exceptional! I always have fresh mussels if they are on the menu so have had them many times. When I saw fresh mussels, chorizo and chilli in a tomato sauce, I was hooked. It came with chips, which were crispy on the outside and beautifully fluffy on the inside, and a side salad with a very tasty dressing. The mussels also came with lovely bread and butter to mop up the tomato sauce. The layers of flavour were fabulous with the smoky paprika flavour of the chorizo and just enough chilli to let you know it was in there, lovely layers of flavour that didn't detract from the fresh sea flavour of the mussels but enhanced it. The best meal I have had out in years. Thank you!

Lot of food. But quality lacking. Beef was pre sliced as it was so thin you could see through it. Service was good and friendly. Conservatory was very dirty

Lunchtime. No food till next Wednesday as chef on holiday, Ladies toilet cleaner seems to have gone with him. Colourful local character ie pub bore encouraged by equally noisy barmaid. At least the chef at the Belper Arms was there.I keep saying I will ring...

Wonderful champagne breakfast with a big group. Excellent food, excellent service, which is hard to manage for 40-odd people

The food was delicious but the evening was let down by the poor service. We had to continually try and catch the attention of the staff in order to get more drinks for the table. It's also unfortunate you have to walk through a very crowded bar from the restaurant area to reach the bathrooms, which were flooded and in poor condition, including cubicles being occupied by gentlemen quite obviously partaking in illegal activities. The live music in the bar was also extremely loud, even in the restaurant area, which made talking to one another difficult. There should be some form of partition to separate the two areas. As I said, the food is excellent, but it is expensive, so the service and facilities need to be improved to warrant the prices.
