We went for lunch in the bar, meal was reasonable but the staff need some training. We sat with finished plates for 15mins, no attempt to clear them.*Despite passing the table several times didn't check if happy with the food, if we had finished, if we would like the sweet menu. When finally caught his eye came to the table had to be prompted to take the plates,he seemed unaware of them, he took those away but did not return for the obviously empty glasses and bottles. While serving meals, dispensing cutlery and drinks from the bar he petted a dog and touched his hair and face but did not wash his hands. As I said the meal was reasonable except for the sponge pudding. A sponge should by definition be light and airy, not like the one presented which was dense and heavy, it needed pressure on the spoon to get through it. When the uneaten 'sponge' was returned to the member of staff he seemed not to understand 'inedible'. His only response was 'right ' no apology, no further comment. Altogether this member of staff just seemed totally unaware of what was going on around him and what his responsibilities were.

Friends stopped off on their way from Hull to Melrose and I was their guest for the most delicious Sunday lunch I've had for a long time. So glad I chose the lamb. Sorry to say one of my friends became poorly and a HUGE thanks to Chloe who came to the rescue with her nursing skills. Unfortunately we had to leave early.

Took about 20 minutes before we were asked if we wanted a drink on arrival. Food was very good but spoilt by waitress who could not take the order correctly. My granddaughter got peas instead of beans and didn’t get her beans until she was finished her meal. I didn’t get my meal until everyone had finished theirs.

Food and service very good as we expect from The Ridley. However, I had booked online for a 6pm table. When we arrived, the person who greeted us could not seem to find our booking. However, we were shown to a table and everything was fine after that. When we arrived home, I found a message saying that our booking had been cancelled. I can only presume that we had not been registered as having arrived. Not very satisfactory, even though the meal and service were fine.

We have been going to the Ridley for years. It has always been my local pub where I was proud to take family and friends when they came to stay . Not any more . The last 2-3 years there has been such a deterioration . We recently thought we would try again to see if had improved , and booked a family meal there as we have done many times over the years . In fact it used to be our go to place with family travelling from all over the region to come . It was awful . Some of the meal were ok , fish and chips are safe , fish cakes good , but all expensive . Puddings .. what a rip off £8 for a tiny bit of brownie . I don’t mind paying for good food but it was tasteless, cheap and tiny . . But the cleanliness of the place is the biggest downfall . It is filthy . Tables sticks and dirty , everything dirty and run down , toilets awful no soap in the women’s toilets .. yuk!! . The once lovely beer garden full of weeds , dirty and unkempt , even the front of it looks like no one is bothered . I used to recommend the Ridley to loads of people .But don’t now . It is such a shame , used to be a gem of a place but not anymore .sadly .

Went today for a sunday roast, got a beef dinner with a side of mash and crackling. The dinner was luke warm, apart from the turnip which was hot. The beef was absolutely stunning and the rest of the food was nice. The side of crackling was meant to come with apple sauce, we had to go to the bar to ask for this as no one came over and asked how our meal was. Not really a biggy. The most disappointing part for me was how dirty the place was. We booked for 6, our table had not been wiped down and the food next to us had food underneath for the full duration of our visit, there was also what look like egg splattered up the wall. Overall, poor customer service and dirty even though the beef was amazing I do not think I would go back here.

We were very disappointed with the food and surroundings. The tables were in a poor conditon, varnish missing and very sticky. We were told they were being replaced but surely they should have been removed and not still being used if they knew there was an issue. My husband’s beer was flat and we were told it was a real ale when we queried this. We were charged for an alternative although we felt we should have been told before we purchased the original order. The bacon on his burger was not crispy but cremated and not very much of it. My pasta was bland and uninteresting. On the plus side the staff were efficient and friendly.

Young staff holding together what was once a diamond of a good pub. Furnishings grubby with crumbs on seats everywhere, sticky tables that require cleaning. Menu was damp and greasy. Someone needs to get a grip, get decorated, get some quirky furnishings and make sure cleanliness is paramount.

This is the first & last time I will be having food at this pub. the staff, who are very young were doing their best, but some additional support from their manager would be helpful. Our drinks order took a long time to get to us, 1 ginger beer & 1 lime & soda..the waitress did apologise. I ordered scampi and my friend ordered the Gammon steak.. £18 for insipid oven chips put in the fryer, and 8 scampi pieces which were rock hard.. the gammon steak was as thin as paper, so more of a slither than a steak. Really disappointing and not value for money at all. We ordered dessert of Eton mess & 2 coffees. The Eton mess was a very small portion for the £8 price tag!!!! our coffees didn't arrive with it, we finished dessert and sat for a while until the waitress come over asking if we had had our coffees, when we confirmed we hadn't, she asked if we wanted them or to have them removed from bill. we asked for them & she did her best to get the coffees to us. Really disappointed in the quality of the food, It is not worth the high price! sadly wont be coming back for food. which is a shame as its a lovely pub!

I ordered the chef special chicken wrapped in Ham on a bed of Spring veg risotto pricey at £19.50 and my husband ordered veg Lasagne After half an Hour the food arrived. My chicken looked as if it had been starved and was tiny and it lay on a bed of yellow and green veg risotto That was it My husbands Lasagne was burnt and sent back and a gammon steak ordered which he then waited another 15 mins It arrived and looked like 2 long thin rashers of bacon and nothing like a steak he was compensated with a free pint of beer and after I complained about the price and size of my Meal I was reassured the head chef would be informed of my opinion. We have been to the Ridley Arms for lunch numerous times. On this occasion I ordered foraged mushrooms on toast with a poached egg. Apart from the fact that the mushrooms were of one type only, resembling normal supermarket mushrooms and not foraged, the poached egg was cold and undercooked resulting in very cold watery egg being spread all over my dish. Nobody came to the table to ask if the food was ok and I didn't want to make a fuss at the time but when the waitress came to take the plates away, I told her that the poached egg had been freezing cold and had ruined the dish and that I thought the kitchen should be informed. There was no response from her and I am not even sure the kitchen was duly informed. I wasn't expecting anything in return but an apology/explanation might have been welcomed. Not a nice experience and badly handled.

This used to be a regular family haunt before it went into decline a few years ago. Happily, it has rediscovered its mojo, evidenced by the hive of activity in the restaurant and bar areas. Sunday lunch was excellent. A varied menu, succulent meats and the most delicious roast potatoes..Choice of vegetables was a trite predictable but that is a minor gripe. Most definitely back on the family radar.

My wife and I have lunch at this restaurant quite frequently but we where disappointed at the food on 3rd March 2024 . Our main course was very good so we ordered deserts and coffee to finish off. When they arrived they looked delightful but when we tasted them they where only warm and as they where crumble with custard and sticky toffee pudding they should have been HOT. We informed the waitress who said she would attend to it and get them heated up. When they returned and we tasted them there was no change in the temperature. We then informed the waiter who just offered to take them to the kitchen and inform the chef and get them heated up once again. There was no apology or refund offered and although my wife consumed hers ,as it was a little hotter, I left mine to be cleared away as there was no point in sending it back TWICE. What was an enjoyable event suddenly turned a little sour. The coffee was hotter.

Went for Sunday lunch as a group of four; table booked and came at a non-busy time slot. Food blinking horrible. Many items not home cooked but mass catering processed packed a la ping microwaved and covered in camouflaging gravy (like the ‘roast’ beef - machine cut beef processed roll - tasteless and mulch)! Undercooked and measly portions of veg, under roasted potatoes that were too hard to cut on the plate, etc. a real joke and rip off. Charged extra for more veg and gravy… both were needed as the servings were inadequate. Tried to give feedback, but there was no interest. Deserts were from a catering company and not of good quality; one cheesecake was still frozen in the centre. This place boasts a ‘traditional home cooked pub Sunday roast’, which it is most definitely not and I cannot understand how it still has custom. Bad food and rude staff. Awful food and attitude. Just a money making scam.. be warned. Very sad as we had been told this was a great place for Sunday lunch and had an enviable reputation. If it did, it does not deserve any worthy reputation now. Overpriced rubbish. Argh! Minus 5 stars! Management couldn’t wait to get us out, to resell table even though we were not finished. Bad, bad, bad!

Visited for Sunday Dinner, 14/1/24. Been in a few times for a drink, thought we'd try a meal. Ordered the Chicken Breast, ended up with a leg. I'm a breast man. Asked for gravy in a boat. That did'nt happen. The gravy was all over the plate, in fact the roasties were swimming for the safety of the Yorkshire Pudding... Since when has mashed pototo been an extra? Thats a side dish here at £4.00. The place was full, so thought it would be ok. On the whole it was, with pleasant staff, who were doing their best... Perhaps on reflection I should have sent it back. I was hungry, the meal was hot, so I ate it. The dinner was alright, but won't have another here. Visit, make your own decision... I hope the boat comes in for you, if you like your gravy in one....

Food is always decent at the Ridley arms! The chefs are absolutely amazing. I feel like the chefs get let down by the utter shocking service by the waiters. Mainly the waitresses. They are so poor. Firstly we arrived on the 7th January at approximately 1630 hours… We were kindly escorted to our table to which we started looking at the menu and were dribbling from the mouth ready for some beef……. 20 mins later we eventually had enough and went up to ask to order our food and drinks. The rude waitress with zero enthusiasm for her job returned to the table and said we have no beef? Thanks for letting me know when we sat down at our table love. We then asked for colouring stuff for the children and she just rudely said they are over there. After this we then got our drinks. 3 of the 6 drinks were wrong. The food then arrived and the kids plates were extremely hot so I had to tip the food on to a spar plate for them to eat their food. After they put the food down they just walked off so again 5 mins later I had to go up and ask for some sauces. Overall the food was lovely. Thank you to the chefs. If I could tip my money to the chefs I would of done but I left no tip due to the absolutely shocking service from mainly the female waitresses… please have a word with your staff and make sure they have a-bit of enthusiasm, compassion and love for their job or give them the boot. One of the main thing that makes customers come back is great friendly service. Thank you.

Five years ago I wrote a scathing review on this boring and tired pub, saying that I would never eat here again. However, following the funeral of my nephew who lived nearby, I was disappointed to find that his widow had booked a room in this place for lunch afterwards. Fourteen of us were fed from a decent-looking menu, but the general feeling was of heavy disappointment. My beef casserole was nothing short of rubbish: it cost £18 and consisted of a small portion of mashed potatoes and vegetables, with the worst beef I've ever had. Almost every small piece contained fat or gristle. The Ridley Arms was an old coaching inn, and I bet that the 18th C diners would have been far better fed than I was. Apart from the always-poor food the ambience is dead, and there needs to be a complete refurbishment because this is a wasted building. It is owned by the bloke who took over the Fitzgerald's franchise, and he has done a decent job on some of his establishments - so why not this one? The people who are satisfied enough to give ratings over two must be very easily pleased.

Many staff were buzzing around in a quiet and efficient manner. After only a short wait our meals arrived. We had both ordered loin of pork. Our plates were nice and hot, several slices of succulent pork, roasts and several veg, all well cooked and topped with a large crispy yorkshire pud and a very tasty gravy with a bit of crackling. Needles to say it was all polished off. Sadly our appetites dont go to a pud. There was also a very nice ambience all around. Great value for money, we have spent much more on poorer quality food and service. Will return.

I have been here many times over the last 25 years or so. It is a very nice pub, but miles from anywhere, so they know that they need to offer good service to get people to visit, particularly if they need to travel. I visited recently in the evening with a friend, for a few pints and a catch-up and the service was variable. To start it was OK but later, although we were stood at the bar, nobody could see that we had finished our drinks and worse, were more interested in talking among themselves than responding to our requests. Eventually, when we got the girl's attention, and politely asked if we could have a drink, she looked like she had no idea what she was being asked! Then she poured one pint and presented it politely enough but missed the other one! It's not a big deal, but it felt like our drinks were an inconvenience to their evening. If our patronage is not appreciated, we will likely drink in more convenient places, where the service may be no better, but travel is easier. Also the choice of real ale was not as good as it has been - but this may be just the date we visited. Would be great to improve the staff training and get them to treat guests as if they are important to the business - I used to enjoy going to the Ridley Arms and hope that they identify the issues and make more of an effort.

The evening poor from start to finish. Restaurant was busy and looks like they're short of staff. The staff that were working were clueless, which appeared to be through lack of training. Took ages to even place a drinks order, they don't have a wine list, you ask for a wine you would like and they will go away and see if they have it OR you leave your table and go to the bar and look at a wine list on a blackboard behind the bar - unbelievable!! Eventually ordered our food, when it arrived plates and food was barely warm - suspect our order had been awaiting a server for some time but due to lack of staff it had been standing a long time. As always the food was amazing and the portions very generous. A lovely warm welcome and Sarah went above and beyond when one of our party decided after our meals were brought out that she would like some bread and butter with her meal. Sarah sorted it out without any fuss.

We stopped by chance at The Percy Arms for a drink and ended up eating an amazing meal-Wednesday afternoon and very quiet but the food was delicious and the service excellent. The soup was very tasty and the steak cooked to perfection - we will return!

I’m so sad to see this lovely place closed. It had great staff and atmosphere and a fantastically good smoked haddock chowder. I wish its people all the best and I thank them for all the great visits we’ve had here. I really hope that there might be a replacement cafe of such quality. We’ll watch with interest.

Our introduction to this country pub was to a spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean bedroom, with stunning views of the fells. Next dinner and cooking of Michelin quality. A highlight was the scallop with belly pork, a brilliant dish. Next morning breakfast, again flawless in every respect from the service to the produce. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.

My partner & I came here on Sunday for a spot of lunch we both had Fish & Chips ( I had salad with mine instead of chips) I have to say the fish was amazing I would say 100 times better than you would get at a fish shop. The batter was so light & crispy and the fish tasted so good. The staff made us feel so welcome happy smiling faces and we did not have to wait long before our food came I would whole heartily recommend plants plus for lunch
