I noticed that one of the few bad reviews here related to a visit on a Monday. We also visited on a Monday and were unimpressed. The food was at best mediocre and the service although friendly was amateurish. We will not be returning to The Richard Onslow.

We randomly decided to eat here, and were not disappointed. Not wanting a heavy lunch we both opted for a starter each. I had the artichoke and almond option, my friend had the crabcakes. The portion sizes were more than enough, well presented and the food very tasty and well prepared. Staff were polite and helpful though the young lady that served us needs to smile if she's going to make it in the hospitality industry! It's not enough to be efficient. Thoroughly recommend.

We stayed at the Richard Onslow for 3 nights while we were at a local festival. There is free parking at the rear of the property, and access to the building is unlimited at night. Breakfast in the restaurant was good, and there is a lovely cafe a few doors away as an alternative. Staff are very friendly and accommodating and we were able to store a pint of milk in the fridge in the bar area. Last year we stayed in Room 1 in a newer part of the building, with a double bed, looking out onto a quiet High St. This year we stayed in room 4 with a king size bed, looking out onto a small flat roof above the kitchen. It was a quiet room in the old part of the hotel. It was very quaint with exposed beams, lime plastering, and a large bathroom with a roll top bath and a shower. The bed was great for my tall husband, but the steps up to the bathroom, and also the bedroom, were accessed by short doorways in which had padding attached to prevent injury. Tea/Coffee facilities, ironing board & iron, and a hair dryer. Both rooms are accessed by a staircase at the rear of the pub and access can be either via the front entrance, or from the rear through a courtyard The only negatives could be that there are no drawer units in the rooms so you have to live out of your bags (although there is a wardrobe to hang clothes). In room 4, although the bed was lovely, as we both have back problems, bending over to go down a step to the lobby to get to the bathroom was difficult. Internet reception was limited in room 4

We stayed 2 nights in Room 3. Super friendly and helpful staff, very clean room, nice décor. Beds a little hard, but still had a reasonable night's sleep. Breakfast was amazing. Great location. The noise from the pub was noticeable, but as our TV was on an outside wall we just turned the volume up and drowned out the loud chatter and music. No elevator, and room 3 has the bathroom on the mezzanine level (just mentioning if you have physical restrictions.)

Just personal comments on our choice of food - the terrine starter of parma ham and chicken was too dry and therefore quite difficult to eat. It was also accompanied by dry, very crispy toasted bread. It needed maybe a mayonnaise or some moisture! In contrast the mushroom and leek risotto was excellent - nicely presented and delicious.

Stayed here for one night before work the next day. Had dinner on the night that I was staying and found the food to be excellent. Very good vegetarian options well cooked and well presented. I would certainly like to visit their restaurant again when I'm not on business as it would have been nice to have sampled their drinks menu which looked very inviting. Gorgeous trifle dessert that tempted me into indulging and didn't regret it either. Stayed in room number 7. This is a single room with a double bed and was probably one of the most comfortable bed and pillows that I've experienced. Classy decor in the room and everything provided that the business traveller might need. One strange feature of the room though was the extremely low entry aperture into the bathroom. It really felt like being Alice in Alice in Wonderland after eating the cakes to make her small. Once through the aperture and standing up straight again, the bathroom is actually of normal size and well equipped with nice toiletries. Just be aware that someone of over 6ft might be challenged a bit just bending through.

If this is the best restaurant in Cranleigh then we're in trouble! At these prices the food should be much better than it was. Fish overcooked, with underseasoned potatoes and some rocket! Shepherds pie also underseasoned and bland. Deserts saved the day. I know sometimes Mondays is a bad day as the regualr chef in restaurants takes that day off - no idea if that is what happened here but this was poor.

Met up at the Richard Onslow for our monthly Boys' Night Out. The four of us were impressed. Service was exemplary. The fish pie (£21.50) was excellent - with King Prawn, Hake, Trout and Haddock – and my beef and ale pie was very good.. the rather dry filling was augmented by a jug of gravy which saved the day (£16.75). Served with beans. The dessert list was a delight. Three of us had the fantastic blueberry summer pudding (£8) - the best I've had in ages. And at the bar they serve Sheer Drop; one of my favourites. Altogether excellent. Recommended.

Dreadful lunch in Fathers Day. You can’t fault the staff but they are the best thing about the restaurant. My parents had a gammon roast that had seen better days. The gammon was dry and hard. We were told that nobody else had complained but maybe they didn’t get the last bits that should never had been served and should have been disposed of. My mums potatoes were full of black dots that already looked awful and not very appetising and parsnips were rock hard…there was nothing right these meals. Me and my husband picked seabass and it was awful. Nothing like the description on the menu. We discussed our issues and all that were offered was £40 off the menu and I still Had to pay £98 for lunches we couldn’t even eat. We were offered to bottles of ale to take away which I left. If I’d taken them it would have delivered the wrong message. It was an awful lunch and so considering it was a day to celebrate my dad we left feeling very disappointed.

Due to having no water in our area, we decided to make the best of it and have lunch out. It was a shot in the dark as I had not eaten at this pub before, but it turned out to be a great choice. We both enjoyed a very green and tasty broad bean, pea and spinach soup - a real vitamin blast and delicious with some artisan bread. I then opted for the roast beef, one of their standard roasts. Other options were free range pork or chicken and for veggies, a Veggie Wellington which looked superb. We did have a wait as the restaurant was busy, but the attentive staff and manager ensured we were kept informed and offered a free dessert as well. We were not in a rush and knew they would have been very busy due to the water situation locally. My roast was fantastic. Well done meat, as requested, although rare was available. Beautiful selection of vegetables including greens, leeks, parsnip, carrots and delicious roasties. An enormous Yorkshire pudding and luscious gravy made it even better. One of the best roasts I have eaten out. And even better, our lovely waitress offered me seconds of all the veg which I love. My husband chose a vegetarian curry which he said was very good, but wished he had gone for the roast option. We decided against dessert having had a big main course, but there were some excellent options including treacle tart. The food was lovely, service was friendly and efficient and we left very happy. Credit to the young front of house team - you were all excellent and of course the chef and their team for a lovely meal. We will be returning having enjoyed it all so much.

Well the good points are that they provide hot-water bottles and blankets for those dining outside (as we were). The staff are friendly and efficient, as you'd expect and require. The menu features dishes outside the scope of normal pub fayre. But, and this is where the negatives come in. Yes there are heaters in the poutside dining area but unless you're seated under one of them because of their location they're pretty much ineffective. Unless it's nice and warm (and it wasn't when we visited) it can make the food cool quite rapidly. We both had the same starters and mains. The baked Camembert was OK but nothing more (the Tunworth is far superior to that offered). We asked for duck to be medium but it was underdone to our taste. The chicory featured an over-enthusiastic use of orange which overwhelmed the chicory. It came with Delmonico potatoes (hooray, not chips) but the potatoes themselves were underdone and it waas heavy on the garlic (not mentioned on the menu). Desserts were again OK but nothing special. Overall the prices were 15-20% overpriced. So, would we return? Well the meal was OK but nothing more and given that it was marginally overpriced, that it was a 45 mile round trip and you had to pay for parking then I'm afriad we won't. This is the same review of mine that appears against the hotel listing for this establishment.

The wines were good, the welcome warm, and the tables well spaced out. The restaurant even had a nice busy buzz about it despite being nicely spaced out and Covid safe. A busy pub in the middle of Cranleigh which was extremely busy on a Tuesday night. The staff were friendly but it did seem that a few more were needed to help out as we had to wait quite a while for our meal. The tables were separated by screens but there was no temperature check on our arrival nor did the staff wear masks/visors. The food was good but not memorable and as a non meat eater I was not happy when the only fish dish (not covered in batter) wasn't available. I settled for the lobster mac which was fine but I needed a magnifying glass to find the lobster! Thankfully we ate out on the Government deal so the cost of our meal was reduced which was good as we have to say we found the dinner expensive for what we received. We don't live in the are so it is unlikely we will return but if we did live in Cranleigh we would probably return but wouldn't rush back!

This was our first lunch out for months and we were a little nervous. However, we were made to feel most welcome and comfortable, and any safety concerns we might have had were swiftly allayed. The food was wonderful too!

Visited as an eating outside experience in the back courtyard. Very disappointed. The table was by a smelly bin cubicle. We moved but still could smell the waste. The was an abandoned sainsburys trolly and piled up cardboard for recycling.Very poor steak for £20 ( £10 with Government deal thank Goodness ) sent 1st steak back while friend ate pretty dried up sea bass. ( overcooked) Shabby tables. What’s happening Richard Onslow. In these times would love to support but standards have certainly dropped and with the service it wasn’t top notch at all.

My first visit and if hadn’t been for the long long wait to take our orders I’d say I’ll be back because the food was goodSadly it took more than half an hour to take our order and only because I went to find a member of staff(who was actually eating) and asked if we could give someone our orderMenus arrived promptly and drinks too but that was it kids were left waiting far too long

Our first Sunday roast out this year and it was worth the wait, the food was great and the service from all the staff was friendly and efficient! Social distancing measures all in place but the atmosphere was still good!

Very well spaced out tables. Excellent service...BUT Myself, my son and his Godmother went for our first meal out in months. Fish was the speciality for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We were there last Saturday 18th July 2020.I was dying for a piece of deep fried cod. My son ordered the lobster and our friend had the crab. The crab was excellent. The lobster was tough and definitely not worth £30. The dish looked as though it had been sitting around in the kitchen for ages: BUT the cod was the reason I've gone to the trouble of writing this review. It was the smallest portion of fried cod I have ever been served anywhere and it cost £15. It was unbelievable. The only reason I did not complain and send it back immediately was because I did not want to embarrass my dinner guests. I would seriously advise the management to see what on earth is going on in the kitchen. It totally ruined what would otherwise have been a lovely dinner.ps this is only the second restaurant review I have ever written.

Our first burger since lock down followed this week by fish and chips. The Richard Onslow team is offering a takeaway service for charity. The menu options are limited but feature everything we need after weeks of home cooked healthy food. Our steak burgers were excellent and the fish and chips really hot the spot. Tarte tatin for dessert was an added bonus. The case of 6 bottles of house wine (3 red/3 white) are also very good value.A little of what we need provided by an enthusiastic team doing their bit for charity. Maybe a Sunday Roast next week.

Visited Cranleigh ( live in Horsham ) to do some shopping and made an impromptu visit to this pub / restaurant. We had walked by many times in the past, but never walked in ! I am glad we did this time. It was blowing a storm outside ( Ciara ) but inside was warm and very welcoming. We decided to stay and eat in the informal restaurant section. We were made to feel at home straight away. The service was first class without being overly attentive. The food selection was very good, although we opted for simple fish cakes and salads. It was value for money as well. Will definitely be back and not walk past next time. Even though the place can look busy from the high street facing windows, there are lots of tables in the pub area where you can also eat. First class team who deserve every success.

I had lunch here once before and this time my wife and I stayed over and had dinner, which was excellent. We had drinks in the bar before which was cosy, excellent lighting and good atmosphere. The lights in the restaurant should come down to match the bar, which would improve the dining experience for dinner. We order a Medrlot from Chile by the glass which surprisingly good for the price. We also enjoyed their selection of breakfast items was excellent & plentiful. The service was fast, I ordered a full English and everything was hot and perfectly cooked. My wife had Avocado on toast with poached egg and Chilli which she loved.

We were disappointed with the Sunday roast as we had read the description on the website and were really looking forward to it. The meal was very mediocre with tough meat being hidden under pools of lukewarm gravy. The pork came with good crackling but no apple sauce. In fact the beef and pork were treated the same with Yorkshire puddings on all plates. The service was friendly but intermittent with staff forgetting we were there. We would not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning ourselves.

Had 30 minutes to spare so had a quick drink in here. It is a lovely cosy pub in the centre of Cranleigh. As it is an old pub it's made up of a few little rooms, and we found a nice quiet place to sit. The dining room looked lovely so might return to eat sometime.

We would like to thank Tom and Camilla and all the staff at The Richard Onslow for looking after us so well after our Wedding on the 5th of December.Despite it being Christmas Party season with a full restaurant at lunchtime, our two tables totally 26 adults and a baby were served efficiently and warmly. The food arrived promptly and was presented beautifully and piping hot. We were not hurried at any point despite the approaching evening service. We carried on our celebrations in the snug bar. Some of our guests stayed in the lovely rooms and enjoyed their stay. I cannot understand some of the reviews below as we are local and always find the food lovely.Thank you all!Alan and Suzanne Hill.

I eat out almost everyday and have done so for the past forty years. To have a memorable meal in any venue is therefore something of an achievement. This establishment not only served something memorable but in fact historic. It was quite probably in my top five worst meals ever with the accolade of it being the most recent since the barren years of the 80s.Steak and chips and a Lamb burger were the culprits. The steak had the grey palour of a man with radiation sickness, the texture of a handrail of an Underground escalator and resisted the knife better than any stab vest sported in Brixton. The Lamb burger my companion tried was deemed to taste 'funny' and he certainly didn't have a clown in mind.I complained to the lovely waitress who said she would speak to the Manager. A while later she returned with aplomb and offered us complementary puddings. Now although I'm game I work on averages and the odds did not seem appealing.I paid the £45 bill and left. Beware.

I went with three friends for our first Christmas lunch of the Season to the Richard Onslow today. To say it was disappointing and that there is room for improvement is a massive understatement. We did in fact only go the Richard Onslow as our preferred choice was closed on a Monday. We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless as we enjoyed each other’s company, we had a good chat and stayed quite a while. None of that was due to the experience or ambience offered by The Richard Onslow. On arrival we were told that there was no fish and chips, as the fish delivery had not come today. Also that there was no slow cooked lamb as it was still cooking and would not be available until after 2p.m. We found that information acceptable and informative, although why they could not time the lamb which is on their special Christmas menu to be available for lunch is beyond me. We ordered our meals. After some time we were told that the two of us who had ordered the potted crab were to be disappointed as none was available, so we had to choose alternative starters. Sometime later we were told that there was only one portion of Hake and Bream available and other main courses would need to be chosen. Our server, Lauren was most apologetic about not knowing what was available and what was not and said she had asked the kitchen was and was not available she had not been properly informed. Eventually the starters were brought to the table, one was a wrong order which was left for us to eat if we wanted it. One of the starters was Dorset Charcuterie with Cornichons, the Charcuterie was served with the skin on. I did bring this up with the manager, Tom, who informed me that it was edible, and that the chef was the best they had ever had, whilst it may be edible, who would choose to eat it and what type of chef would serve it with skin on?

Coffee - 2.3/ 5 Cake - 4.7/5 Vibe - 4/5 The coffee was okay, I’d come back to see if it were just an ‘off’ shot. The real star of the show was the carrot cake. I felt myself savouring every mouthful and my heart almost skipped a beat when some almost fell off the plate. Staff were lovely.

We had some soup, and teas before and after going round the nearby sculpture park. Inside the pub was warm and the armchairs are comfy. Celeriac soup was hot and tasty, asked for a side of chips half way through and these came almost immediately. Service excellent. Would come again, this time for an extended lunch or dinner.
