Stayed here for one night before work the next day. Had dinner on the night that I was staying and found the food to be excellent. Very good vegetarian options well cooked and well presented. I would certainly like to visit their restaurant again when I'm not on business as it would have been nice to have sampled their drinks menu which looked very inviting. Gorgeous trifle dessert that tempted me into indulging and didn't regret it either. Stayed in room number 7. This is a single room with a double bed and was probably one of the most comfortable bed and pillows that I've experienced. Classy decor in the room and everything provided that the business traveller might need. One strange feature of the room though was the extremely low entry aperture into the bathroom. It really felt like being Alice in Alice in Wonderland after eating the cakes to make her small. Once through the aperture and standing up straight again, the bathroom is actually of normal size and well equipped with nice toiletries. Just be aware that someone of over 6ft might be challenged a bit just bending through.

Stayed for 10 days on a business trip and the service was really good. Room cleaned up on a daily basis, friendly staff, good options for breakfast and lunch. I definitely recommend The Richard Onslow! It's in a central location in Cranleigh with takeaway options and a Sainsbury's/Co-op within walking distance.

If this is the best restaurant in Cranleigh then we're in trouble! At these prices the food should be much better than it was. Fish overcooked, with underseasoned potatoes and some rocket! Shepherds pie also underseasoned and bland. Deserts saved the day. I know sometimes Mondays is a bad day as the regualr chef in restaurants takes that day off - no idea if that is what happened here but this was poor.

The fish pie was dreadful. The mashed potato wS flavourless and dry, there was very little fish /seafood in it and virtually no sauce. The salad with it was just a few undresses lettuce leaves. Disgustingly poor for the price.

5 stars not enough! Spent 3 days here and I can’t be positive enough, the staff are the nicest we’ve encountered in an establishment, the food is excellent and the best pub food I’ve eaten. We made the mistake of going to Shere at the White Horse ( of Holiday fame) and the Sunday roast was nowhere near as good as here

Met up at the Richard Onslow for our monthly Boys' Night Out. The four of us were impressed. Service was exemplary. The fish pie (£21.50) was excellent - with King Prawn, Hake, Trout and Haddock – and my beef and ale pie was very good.. the rather dry filling was augmented by a jug of gravy which saved the day (£16.75). Served with beans. The dessert list was a delight. Three of us had the fantastic blueberry summer pudding (£8) - the best I've had in ages. And at the bar they serve Sheer Drop; one of my favourites. Altogether excellent. Recommended.

Overcooked peas, fish not nice (and weirdly severed upside down!), tartare sauce not tartare sauce - just some gherkins in mayonnaise. Told the staff, not much response unfortunately. Thanks Michael, Len and Lucy for making our stay lovely. Richard onslow is a great base to go to Godalming and the Devils Puchbowl. Both lovely places to visit. Due to having no water in our area, we decided to make the best of it and have lunch out. It was a shot in the dark as I had not eaten at this pub before, but it turned out to be a great choice. We both enjoyed a very green and tasty broad bean, pea and spinach soup - a real vitamin blast and delicious with some artisan bread. I then opted for the roast beef, one of their standard roasts. Other options were free range pork or chicken and for veggies, a Veggie Wellington which looked superb. We did have a wait as the restaurant was busy, but the attentive staff and manager ensured we were kept informed and offered a free dessert as well. We were not in a rush and knew they would have been very busy due to the water situation locally. My roast was fantastic. Well done meat, as requested, although rare was available. Beautiful selection of vegetables including greens, leeks, parsnip, carrots and delicious roasties. An enormous Yorkshire pudding and luscious gravy made it even better. One of the best roasts I have eaten out. And even better, our lovely waitress offered me seconds of all the veg which I love. My husband chose a vegetarian curry which he said was very good, but wished he had gone for the roast option. We decided against dessert having had a big main course, but there were some excellent options including treacle tart. The food was lovely, service was friendly and efficient and we left very happy. Credit to the young front of house team - you were all excellent and of course the chef and their team for a lovely meal. We will be returning having enjoyed it all so much.

I come in here for a coffee most days and the staff are all lovely. The décor is also great as are my coffees with free smarties, however, the food is such a disappointment. The fish finger sandwich or however it is ponced up on the menu was a joke, it made a McDonald fillet-of-fish look like Rick Stein had knocked it up by comparison! The location and the staff keep me coming back, but that is the third time I have been sorely disappointed by the food.

Well the good points are that they provide hot-water bottles and blankets for those dining outside (as we were). The staff are friendly and efficient, as you'd expect and require. The menu features dishes outside the scope of normal pub fayre. But, and this is where the negatives come in. Yes there are heaters in the poutside dining area but unless you're seated under one of them because of their location they're pretty much ineffective. Unless it's nice and warm (and it wasn't when we visited) it can make the food cool quite rapidly. We both had the same starters and mains. The baked Camembert was OK but nothing more (the Tunworth is far superior to that offered). We asked for duck to be medium but it was underdone to our taste. The chicory featured an over-enthusiastic use of orange which overwhelmed the chicory. It came with Delmonico potatoes (hooray, not chips) but the potatoes themselves were underdone and it waas heavy on the garlic (not mentioned on the menu). Desserts were again OK but nothing special. Overall the prices were 15-20% overpriced. So, would we return? Well the meal was OK but nothing more and given that it was marginally overpriced, that it was a 45 mile round trip and you had to pay for parking then I'm afriad we won't. This is the same review of mine that appears against the hotel listing for this establishment.

Still hungry as portion so small 2 more baguettes and 2 more teas were ordered then,as it was so cold outside and tea going cold, a third 2 teas were ordered. The bill was £46! £23 a head! Yangaz next door do a breakfast sandwich on beautiful sourdough bread with 2 slices of bacon and 2 eggs and salad for £5.95 and a pot of tea that has at least 2.5 cups . We stayed for a night while visiting relatives nearby a few weeks ago, and had a meal in the restaurant. The room was lovely, very comfortable, thick fluffy towels, comfy bed. We really enjoyed dinner and breakfast and the Chef and team clearly have some skill in the kitchen. Some lovely touches like the pops of chilli in the smashed avocado and perfectly poached eggs. The wines were good, the welcome warm, and the tables well spaced out. The restaurant even had a nice busy buzz about it despite being nicely spaced out and Covid safe. We did have a problem with the boiler/hot water that night which was fixed as soon as the management became aware and dealt with with speed and a very good grace by the team. All in all we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Thanks to you all.

A busy pub in the middle of Cranleigh which was extremely busy on a Tuesday night. The staff were friendly but it did seem that a few more were needed to help out as we had to wait quite a while for our meal. The tables were separated by screens but there was no temperature check on our arrival nor did the staff wear masks/visors. The food was good but not memorable and as a non meat eater I was not happy when the only fish dish (not covered in batter) wasn't available. I settled for the lobster mac which was fine but I needed a magnifying glass to find the lobster! Thankfully we ate out on the Government deal so the cost of our meal was reduced which was good as we have to say we found the dinner expensive for what we received. We don't live in the are so it is unlikely we will return but if we did live in Cranleigh we would probably return but wouldn't rush back!

Very well spaced out tables. Excellent service...BUT Myself, my son and his Godmother went for our first meal out in months. Fish was the speciality for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We were there last Saturday 18th July 2020.I was dying for a piece of deep fried cod. My son ordered the lobster and our friend had the crab. The crab was excellent. The lobster was tough and definitely not worth £30. The dish looked as though it had been sitting around in the kitchen for ages: BUT the cod was the reason I've gone to the trouble of writing this review. It was the smallest portion of fried cod I have ever been served anywhere and it cost £15. It was unbelievable. The only reason I did not complain and send it back immediately was because I did not want to embarrass my dinner guests. I would seriously advise the management to see what on earth is going on in the kitchen. It totally ruined what would otherwise have been a lovely dinner.ps this is only the second restaurant review I have ever written.

We were made to feel at home straight away. The service was first class without being overly attentive. The food selection was very good, although we opted for simple fish cakes and salads. It was value for money as well. Will definitely be back and not walk past next time. I eat out almost everyday and have done so for the past forty years. To have a memorable meal in any venue is therefore something of an achievement. This establishment not only served something memorable but in fact historic. It was quite probably in my top five worst meals ever with the accolade of it being the most recent since the barren years of the 80s.Steak and chips and a Lamb burger were the culprits. The steak had the grey palour of a man with radiation sickness, the texture of a handrail of an Underground escalator and resisted the knife better than any stab vest sported in Brixton. The Lamb burger my companion tried was deemed to taste 'funny' and he certainly didn't have a clown in mind.I complained to the lovely waitress who said she would speak to the Manager. A while later she returned with aplomb and offered us complementary puddings. Now although I'm game I work on averages and the odds did not seem appealing.I paid the £45 bill and left. Beware.

I went with three friends for our first Christmas lunch of the Season to the Richard Onslow today. To say it was disappointing and that there is room for improvement is a massive understatement. We did in fact only go the Richard Onslow as our preferred choice was closed on a Monday. We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless as we enjoyed each other’s company, we had a good chat and stayed quite a while. None of that was due to the experience or ambience offered by The Richard Onslow. On arrival we were told that there was no fish and chips, as the fish delivery had not come today. Also that there was no slow cooked lamb as it was still cooking and would not be available until after 2p.m. We found that information acceptable and informative, although why they could not time the lamb which is on their special Christmas menu to be available for lunch is beyond me. We ordered our meals. After some time we were told that the two of us who had ordered the potted crab were to be disappointed as none was available, so we had to choose alternative starters. Sometime later we were told that there was only one portion of Hake and Bream available and other main courses would need to be chosen. Our server, Lauren was most apologetic about not knowing what was available and what was not and said she had asked the kitchen was and was not available she had not been properly informed. Eventually the starters were brought to the table, one was a wrong order which was left for us to eat if we wanted it. One of the starters was Dorset Charcuterie with Cornichons, the Charcuterie was served with the skin on. I did bring this up with the manager, Tom, who informed me that it was edible, and that the chef was the best they had ever had, whilst it may be edible, who would choose to eat it and what type of chef would serve it with skin on?

We stayed in the accessible room (room 8) on the ground floor and there was adequate space and the bathroom was very accessible. The main issue was the light and noise that disturbed the night's sleep. The fanlight to the outside door to the courtyard in uncovered and so there is electric light at night and sunlight in the early morning. The room is very close to the kitchen entrance and the store area for linen and from an early time in the morning there was constant banging of doors from staff coming and going which woke us up. All in all a poor night's sleep which could be easily improved by some covering for the fanlight window to the external door and staff being mindful of the doors or fitting a soft-close mechanism. The staff were very friendly and nice but it did not compensate for a poor night's sleep.

Cycled 10 miles to go here for lunch knowing it served food all day. At 3.01pm was told kitchen closed and no food - kitchen closed at 3.00pm. No compromise or asking if just wanted a sandwich or something. Policy changed about two weeks ago after pub had previously prided itself on serving food all day!! Not impressed at such lack of customer empathy.

The staff were very friendly when they did come to the table! The food was awful. I had the vegetable tagine and could not actually taste the flavour of any of the vegetables at all and the - the only flavour was the spices and the barley was really chewy. The chocolate torte was recommended and was too sweet to enjoy (and I love sweet!!). My friend tasted it too as I was a bit surprised, and he agreed.

We were a walking group of 9 to be joined by 3 friends for lunch. The walkers were faster than expected, so sat down a good half hour before the others arrived. Drinks arrived and menus were looked at but we were made to feel welcome and in no way hassled for blocking a large table without ordering. Service was speedy once we did order and all meals were enjoyed - the Sunday roasts went down particularly well.

My brother and I cycled the Downs Link, from Shoreham by Sea to Guildford and then on to Weybridge along the Wey Navigation Canal. So, Cranleigh was a good halfway point. We arrived tired, chilly and in need of a hot bath, good food and real ale. We were not disappointed. Add to that the incredible helpfulness of the staff, this is an excellent establishment. We will be back! PS And, the breakfast was out of this world

We attended yesterday, we had preordered our food at the chefs request. The service was chaotic with none of the staff seeming to know what was going on! The food arrived sporadically, luke warm to cold. Several of us are vegan, the food was bland and at best tasteless. This is definately where NOT to eat as a vegan and frankly at all. Butternut squash soup was ok but they had left the husks on the pumpkin seeds (woody and inedible). The cous cous tagine was seriously tasteless served with boiled greens/ cabbage? Had the chef run out of herbs and spices?

20+ people for a Christmas meal. We had all chosen from the (limited) Christmas special menu in advance. The starters came out quite quickly & were ok. The main courses were quite slow & they all came on stone cold plates, icy cold in fact so the food that was actually touching the plate was cold before we got it. When we told one of the waiters he said it's because it's very cold in the kitchen! Several people sent theirs back & eventually got back what I suspect was food & plate reheated in the microwave. By this time the vegetables (also served in cold dishes) were cold. The food itself was ok but in general vastly overpriced for what it was, poor service (especially considering all was ordered in advance & there were only about 3 other small tables being used) & lacking atmosphere. Won't be going again.

We were a table of 4 and 2 had the tagine which was tasty & 2 had the vegetarian and ordinary alllsorts platter. The food and service were fine. The location is an attractive traditional building in the centre of Cranleigh. The tucked away parlour was cosy and festive and busy.

The pub itself is a lovely place especially in such a beautiful and picturesque village as Shere. The gardens are wonderful and the food is good too although we only had snacks so I couldn’t comment on a meal as yet. One criticism was in the main bar area, where, because of the high ceilings I’m guessing, if there’s even just a few people talking, it seems so very load and you can hear every bodies conversation. You’ll have the whisper in there I suppose! Another negative is that the car park is tiny so you don’t get a huge lot of parking space. Also, an awful lot of the people that were there did seem rather pretentious - perhaps that’s just typical of the area in which I live but I just wish that some people would get their heads out of their a ... se!

The Richard Onslow is a fab location and it is a great pub with a very nice interior. It used to be excellent for food and service but unfortunately, it seems to have lost its way a bit. We had an early evening meal but it wasn't the best experience. We couldn't work out why there was no children's menu. How can the pub attract families (must be half of the local market) when there is nothing for children?

I came across The Richard Onslow by accident and am glad I did. I was looking very last minute for somewhere to meet friends, within an hours drive that had a table for 9! This came up as an option and I booked easily through OpenTable. When we arrived in Cranleigh it was easy to find and we parked on the high street. When we arrived the fire was lit and there was a lovely atmosphere to the whole place. We were waiting for our friends so we had a drink at the bar whilst we waited but our table was ready. Once we sat down we were served quickly and the food arrived quickly too! Most of us had roast dinners and lots of sides which were quickly demolished as it was all very tasty! Only negative was that my roasted carrots were so big they hadn’t actually cooked and were rock solid! The rest of the meal was delightful. We had 5 children with us all under the age of 10. Two had roast dinners, one burger, chicken and chips - all polished off! Where they don’t actually have a children’s menu as such they offer smaller portions of the main menu for less money - perfect! We would definitely visit again and spend more time in Cranleigh as it looked delightful with the lovely little shops and xmas lights. A successful lunch and enjoyable time had by all....!
