A discrete, elegant, small restaurant with young but exceptional staff. The menu was limited but each course was delicious. I’m glad we booked to eat here whilst staying at the hotel. Good value too: we paid £30 each for 3 courses.

All meals we had during both of our stays were first class! Would definitely return again The salted caramel ice cream is the best I have ever had. The Asian Prawn salad was so fresh and so good and the smoked salmon & cream cheese sandwiches for lunch were excellent!

Large family group on 3 tables in the simply decorated, yet elegant, Adam room. Lots of natural light pouring in. Room booking fee but we had the room for hours and did not feel at all rushed. Banqueting menu sent to us to decide on 3 choices to send out to guests. We decided on pressed pork, leek and potato soup, salmon / chicken, beef, seabass / sticky toffee pud, panna cotta, choc tart. Portion sizes good and everyone tucked in with gusto. Food lovely, with particular praise for the beef. I had pressed pork, beautifully cooked seabass followed by a massive portion of sticky toffee pudding (scrummy). The waiting staff were attentive and friendly. We were lucky in that it was a fine day and that people could go outdoors as the grounds are lovely. Everyone enjoyed themselves. We considered a number of options before deciding on this venue for our celebratory lunch. I was pleased with how it went and consider excellent value for money for the number of people. Thank you.

We have had some lovely meals at Rowton Hall and also they were fantastic for my daughters wedding. However we were very disappointed with our Christmas Day dinner. The meal was very poor, the service was appalling and I would not go out for Christmas lunch again after this experience. I wrote to the hotel twice to complain and they have never responded so I would like to add this review. LS

Lunch here was nearly always a treat, the staff are still lovely, although we missed Julie (who was on holiday when we visited) the young waiters were charming, even though they forgot to open the sparking water bottles for us, never mind pour the water out! The food was tasty, but we only had one course as we were a little upset the set menu was no longer available, my mother used to say, “I don’t say I can’t afford it, I say I won’t afford it!” My chair cushion was covered in crumbs and the arms of my chair were completely worn out, the new owners are spending a great deal of money on painting the exterior of the hotel, perhaps they should spend money on advertising the restaurant too. The restaurant was never as busy as it deserved to be, but we were always under the impression the money was made in the wedding market and it is possible the new owners don’t want locals lunching with them now particularly either, in which case, close the restaurant. They are missing out, we went for lunch on a Friday, a day which is busy in most places, in the past there would always be other tables taken, even if only two or three others, this time we were the only people in the restaurant, they need to advertise, get the word out, offer good value and it would be very odd if they didn’t make a well deserved profit, the food is usually enjoyable and the setting delightful, apart from the tatty wicker chairs which need putting on the tip!

Visited for a special Sunday lunch with friends on their 60th Wedding Anniversary, the usual excellent friendly service to the table, one of the chairs was in a poor state and needed scrapping. The service was very slow and when the main course came, roast beef lunch, it was on almost cold plates and the beef was on top of the veggies. The beef was very chewy, the food spoiled the moment and three of us left most of our meal,we complained to the Manager and there appeared to be problems in the kitchen, something we had never experienced before. We ordered puddings and I had cheese and biscuits which were soggy and mousetrap cheese when they eventually came. In a nutshell poor slow service of poor food badly arranged on the plate. Not the Rowton Hall we knew and loved. The bill was kindly adjusted by the Manager but this did not compensate for the spoiled moment. We had heard that the premises were under new management and prices had risen but we were saddened by the poor food and slow service and will now seek an alternative venue for a function we wished to book in a few months time.

We had a lovely weekday lunch and were very impressed with every aspect of the dining experience. Excellent small menu, which indicates freshness not freezer, of dishes which provided us with a difficult decision. The food was beautifully presented. The food tasted lovely with excellent sauces and all the different components were full of flavour. Each dish had its own garnish with none of this one vegatable with no matter what meat or fish you order or the scam of having to buy extra vegatables. We loved the various potatoe acompaniments and the baked root vegetables with the succulent beef dish. The portion size was very generous. The hotel appears to have it's own veg and herb gardens, and a poly tunnel, for the great quality vegatables which accompanied our chicken and beef main dishes. The food came without any undue delay and the staff were very friendly and efficient with a genuine desire to ensure that the whole experience was one to saviour. The restaurant is very spacious and comfortable. Surprisingly, the restaurant was not full given this quality but there were a couple of functions going on including what appeared to be a group of retired scientists having lunch in a delightful function room. The hotel has a lovely ambience and is extremely comfortable with beautiful spacious gardens to sit in after your meal or to have a very pleasant walk once the meal has gone down! The hotel is in a beautiful location surrounded by woods and open countryside. The lunch is unbelievablely great value. Highly Recommended.

Pre-booked a party and room for 27 people to celebrate a special birthday. Have previously dined here and thought it would be a good meeting point for all the family.Service was exceptionally slow, long delays between courses, slow to remove plates after the main course and several mix ups with orders. Some guests had to finish their mains before others came out, as their food was going cold waiting. Some of our party even had to leave before dessert as it was taking so long! I can understand a relaxed atmosphere and certainly we would not want to have been rushed, but well over 3 1/2 hours for 3 courses was just too long.Staff were doing their best, but there appeared to be several other parties going on at the same time and they were obviously trying to cover all rooms with the same team. Would have gladly paid more for additional staff if it meant the service was better. We had a lovely time meeting up with the family but, frankly, I felt embarrassed for the delays and food served. Sadly disappointing for what was to be a very special treat for a very special birthday lunch.

Husband had steak, which he was very impressed by. I had sea bass, which I wasn't much fussed with, and only that because there was no vegetarian option. I was still really hungry afterwards. It was a long time coming and I had to ask for some bread, which was quite grudgingly given.I asked for the dessert menu but no-one actually came back to take an order so in the end I didn't bother. If you have the Christmas meal deal, 3 courses plus coffee and mince pies, it's pretty good value at just shy of £20. I'd been told it would be possible to get a veggie alternative on the night but I'd suggest speaking to them beforehand as staff weren't very helpful when it came to it. I'd actually rate as 3.5 good if the option was there. It's nicer than average but my food and the luke-warm service were a let-down.

I think it would be hard to find a better value lunch for miles around. Sometimes it is exceptional other times just very good, but, it is always very pleasant to visit such a relaxing dining room. The tables are always beautifully laid with starched linen cloths and napkins and the surroundings are really lovely, the waitress is so pleasant and works hard to get everything right for her customers, one of our party has a gluten intolerance and this was taken on board and kindly dealt with. I never get involved with paying, but, I understand from my husband, to compensate for the cost of the food, which is low, the drinks are more expensive than average, but still, well worth visiting and it is sad to see a recent reviewer did not enjoy their visit. We have visited many times and always left feeling we have been well cared for and looking forward to returning. However, I do know that occasionally even I can produce a poor meal at home and I have been to 5 star hotels and had a poor experience, so nobody gets everything 100% a 100% of the time. At least if things go wrong at Rowton Hall it will not have cost as much as it might and you will not have had to do the cooking!

Left our booking very late and were very very lucky to have got into this wonderful venue.Christmas Day Lunch is always risky but we were welcomed to this family run Hotel with the greatest of genuine warm welcomes! The hotel was easy to find and is in a very imposing ex-stately home, no problems parking, just a few yards from the entranceWe were booked in the ballroom for lunch which was very well decorated and inviting the conservatory was warm and drinks served by an obviously very experienced waiter who was spot on with his drinks service; our order was also taken for the whole meal from a well printed and presented menu with wide choices for every course. We were soon escorted to our table which was beautifully set with spotless linen, cutlery, flatware and glassware as well as crackers and a deluxe gift for everyone. Wow! what wonderful quality food and so well served a first course was there in just a few minutes and then a short welcome relaxing wait for the main event which was served piping hot with separately served vegetables and trimmings. As we were a table of 8 we had most of the choices and everyone was delighted with the quality service and attention. Desert was also well served and delicious, more drinks served quickly and in just a few minutes of ordering How good was it overall?... I'll say no more than we have already booked for next year!

What a disappointment this year's Christmas lunch was compared to the wonderful one we had there 12 months ago. Everything started off well; the carrot and cumin soup and lime sorbet were good. However, the traditional turkey lunch was poor to say the least. The meat, although plentiful, appeared to be carved from a joint rather than the whole bird. The dark meat in particular was tough, fatty and gristly and the vegetables gave a new meaning to al dente. The Christmas pudding was overheated and rubbery whilst the white sauce was cold. After asking three times for coffee it eventually came with bite-sized mince pies on which the pastry was doughy and undercooked. All three members of our party experienced the same problems. We expressed our dissatisfaction each time the waitress asked if everything was ok with our meal and the reply we received was " I'm sorry, I'll pass it on to the chef."If only the white sauce had been as warm as the white wine and the wine as old as the turkey, then I may have been able to be more positive.

Went with friends for birthday lunch, it's 18.50 a head and house wine is very reasonable. It's silver service with at least four staff waiting on your table, manager present, serving and helping. The choice on the lunch menu is excellent, 4 of each in effect. Starters were very good, 3 of us were having roast beef and 1 had pork for main course. The roast beef was carved by a chef at the table and substantial slices of properly cooked beef were given, my wife could hardly finish her pork. We all. opted for BlackBerry and Apple crumble which was a delight served with ice cream. Dining room was full with a family party in the small function room.. As I’m getting married at Rowton Hall Hotel in a few weeks, we went to the restaurant for our ‘menu tasting’. When we arrived we waited in the bar area, and was greeted by every member of staff that went by. There were also guests in the bar who were discussing the wedding they had attended the day before; they all seemed very happy and were laughing and joking with the staff - which could only be a good sign! We were also accompanied by my in-laws who ate off the normal Sunday Menu. We were all overwhelmed by the standard of our meals, and it has actually been very difficult for us to choose the dishes for the wedding as all the meals were so good! The service was spectacular; we had a lovely server who was very cheery and attentive, and when we had a question about the dishes, she went and spoke to the chef on our behalf. The food is very reasonably priced for the quality, quantity and the delightful surroundings. There was also a party taking place in the ballroom at the same time as our meal but you would never have known as the service was top notch! I could have stayed at the hotel all day; it’s very relaxing and peaceful. Amazing food and the staff aim to please. I can’t wait to have my wedding at Rowton!

I am not sure I should be writing this as I would hate to find it difficult to get a table at this super venue. We ate here today and the food was lovely, it really fitted into the beautiful setting, the staff are very helpful and the whole experience is a little bit above the usual. We had the special offer lunch menu, which, from memory, was £12.50 for 2 courses or £15 for 3. There was just enough choice to please everyone, without too much choice, which would have been impossible to provide unless the chef only needed to open a packet. The bread rolls were warm and fresh, the water was delivered to the table, without being requested, in a jug with ice and straight from the tap. This restaurant has to be the best value in Chester, whilst offering a high standard of service in a delightful setting. I could happily eat here every day!

While poring over spa brochures, we decided to have lunch in the bar area. However, there was a wedding on that day and so we were ushered into the dining room. We did feel a bit underdressed considering the ladies on the next table were decked out in dresses, pearls and silk scarves, and we had only dressed in jeans expecting to eat in the bar, but we could not have been made to feel more welcome. The food was amazing, I had the chicken and my friend had the lamb, which was well presented and plenty on the plate. The service was excellent by the waiters/waitresses. The most amazing part of the meal was the price of the table d'hote. It was around £12 each for a gorgeous two-course meal, in a lovely restaurant.

The standout course was the apple creme brulee with sable biscuits - stunning. This was a 1hr drive for us so I don't think I'd personally return however I do recommend the restaurant for lovely, old school, silver service delivery and gorgeous puddings.

Because we were late booking for Christmas Day lunch the restaurant was full so we were booked into the ballroom. On arrival we were taken into the conservatory which was a disappointment as I thought we would be taken into the bar. The conservatory was cold and everyone going to the gym passed through which when you are dressed for Christmas Day lunch at a decent hotel seeing people walk by you in gym gear / jeans isn't quite what I expected. We we're taken into the ballroom and there was two other tables with people on so this lacked atmosphere in a large ballroom. I asked for bread sauce to go with my turkey but was told there wasn't any ( even M&S Sell this to go with turkey) I was disappointed because we often eat in the restaurant and are always pleased. No I wouldn't book for the ballroom again.

We had a small cup of soup compliments of the chef to start with which was a nice surprise. I had smoked salmon for my starter which was beautifully presented on a slate with salad leaves. However, my colleagues soup was only tepid and we had to ask for bread to go with the starter although there was already butter on the table. The cutlery was incorrect, some of us were given fish knives and some weren't for our salmon starter and there were no soup spoons, so the soup that had been sent back to be reheated sat on the table going cool. The problem seemed to be the waiters. There were two young men who both seemed very inexperienced and were not at all visible in the dining room, instead spending the majority of their time in the kitchen. The starter was cleared and the mains started arriving, that is all apart from mine, which was a steak. My colleague was given her steak and everyone else had their meals, so I told them to start so their meals wouldn't get cold as it was quite cold in the restaurant. I was still waiting 16 minutes later, no sign of my meal and not a sign of either of the waiters. After this long wait whilst my colleagues ate their meals (which were delicious) my steak arrived. The waiter didn't apologise, but did say there had been a "mix up" in the kitchen. The steak was lovely and cooked as I had asked, but I was eating on my own as my colleagues had long since finished their meals.Dessert's were ordered and appeared quickly and were ok - nothing very special, the Christmas Pudding was cold, but as the waiters had once again disappeared we just shared the Cheese and Biscuits! We weren't offered coffee, so we asked if we could order it and our order was taken without it being written down, needless to say after 10 minutes the waiter came back with a pad and pen and asked us to repeat our order. When it arrived there were no mints or petit fours so we asked and they were brought to the table. All in all we enjoyed our meals, but the restaurant was very cold and got colder as the evening progressed, we eventually finished our meals wearing our coats! I think the waiters were very inexperienced and didn't seem to appreciate what the clients who dine at somewhere like Rowton Hall expect which should be excellent unobtrusive service.I would visit again, but only in the summer as it would at least be hotter and the food would stay warm! I do like Rowton Hall and have been many times before so this was disappointing.

I recently organised a pre Christmas Dinner for colleagues at Rowton Hall and from the moment we arrived in the car park there was a magical Christmas feeling. The whole of the front of the hotel twinkled with hundreds of tiny white lights and once inside there were beautifully decorated Christmas trees at every turn.We dined in The Adams Room (so named as it boasted an Adams Fireplace). The long oval table was dressed with a crisp linen tablecloth along with linen napkins and the room was tastefully decorated in green and white complete with a huge Christmas tree. The food was truly delicious, beautifullly presented and served by three courteous, efficient waiters. The whole evening was a success and we look forward to a return visit. If you want to dine in an establishment with style, olde world charm and standards along with delicious food then you must visit Rowton Hall - you will not be disappointed.

The food was delicious. We had a private dining room, as it was such a big group and it was beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed and would go back if we lived closer! I recommend the tomato and caramelised pepper soup with pesto croutons. Some of the best I've ever taster! The chicken was also beautiful and the lemon tart with citrus sorbet was delightful, especially the tart.

I had not been to Rowton hall for some time, but it really lived up to my fond memory. We visited on a midweek evening and I was just amazed that it was as quiet as it was - we managed to book on the same day. I could not fault anything with the food, service or surroundings and I was even pleasantly surprised at the price. The fixed price menu had plenty of choice and everything was superbly prepared and presented.I just wish that I lived more locally, I would be a regular!

My husband and I stayed in Rowton Hall Hotel for a short break and ate in the restaurant on one evening. I doubt we would have chosen to eat there again due to so few choices on the menu, however the food we did have was nice - and fairly priced.

I was taken for a meal today at lunchtime. What a wonderful meal it was. Perfectly cooked and the peace and setting of the Hotel was exceptional.

My husband and I have just enjoyed a three course Sunday lunch at Rowton Hall to celebrate our Anniversary. We have not been for a few years but the restaurant was much the same the beef was carved off a joint at our table. The vegetables were very nice plus the starters. We were so full that we only had mixed ice cream and sorbet for dessert. We missed the waiters that were there for years and they used to bring a sweet trolley to the table for you to choose. Apart from that the food was very nice

We lunched with friends this week and found the formal restaurant charming and the 3 course meal to be top quality and very good value at £26 for 2 people. The staff are friendly and welcoming and Julie was outstanding with attentive service blended with humour. Because I was driving I wanted my Gin and Tonic non-alcoholic substitute: A generous splash of Angostura Bitters with Tonic, ice and lemon. Very few restaurants have the Bitters these days so it was a mark of the quality of Rowton Hall that it was provided without question. The starters were excellent - try the pressed ham terrine or the smoked salmon. The choice of mains is not huge but very good. My favourite grape is the Chenin Blanc and the Vouvray was superb (warning: too sweet if you like your wine dry).My only caveat is that if they have a big wedding on, the service can get a bit stretched.I would recommend Rowton Hall to anyone.

Lunch in the restaurant at Rowton Hall is truly phenomenal value. For just £26 for two (yes, just £13 each!) you will get an excellent 3-course meal in a proper restaurant and prepared by a proper chef - far better than the big "family restaurant" pub down the road. The choice is good, too, and includes sirloin steak with a delightful sauce with no supplements. Service is spot on as well. This has got to be the best value in the Chester area, although I haven't eaten there in the evening. However, for some reason, it's been very quiet whenever I've been so the atmosphere is a little subdued. This is OK for a business lunch, which this was, but normally I prefer busy restaurants with a bit of buzz. Despite this, I'd thoroughly recommend it and you certainly won't come away hungry!

We have been for lunch during the week to Rowton Hall on many occasions and it has always been very good, so when I was looking for somewhere nice to take Mum for Sunday lunch it seemed like a safe bet. When we arrived the car park was almost empty which set alarm bells ringing, and when we went in the lounge for a pre- lunch drink there was nobody there except for us. The lounge is bright and airy and comfortably furnished with lots of seating and nice views over the gardens. When we went through to the restaurant there were only two other tables occupied but the upside of that meant that we were served quickly and efficiently. The staff appeared to be young weekend part timers, but were courteous and reasonably attentive. The food was OK but not outstanding. My mothers smoked salmon appetiser was nicely presented and the portion was a little on the large side but my mushroom soup was thick and bitter tasting with a curious green liquid swirled on the top. I took one spoonful and left it and disappointingly the server walked past several times and never commented on the fact that there was something wrong and even took my bowl away with out passing any comment. The main courses of lamb and roast chicken were again plentiful and well cooked, but the vegetables were far too al dente and the roast potatoes were black and had to be sent back. Desert of raspberry delice and orange mousse were nicely presented and to finish we had coffee in the lounge served with hot milk which is a rare bonus these days. The ambience at the weekend is not welcoming, with the same music track playing three times during our lunch and there is no ambient music in the lounge and when you are the only two people in the room it can feel cold and lacking in atmosphere. There was nobody attending the bar and so we had to go to reception and ask to pay our bill. The price was reasonable but the experience was a little less than average, with no customers, the staff are understandably bored and it shows. I may go again during the week in the summer because the venue itself is very pleasant but Sunday lunch......probably not.

We very much enjoyed our lunch at Rowton Hall. The food was delicious and the wine complimented it perfectly. The service and ambience was superb. Highly recommended.I was fortunate to have a peak at the rooms which are beautiful and have been individually designed to a very high standard. The facilities are excellent and the attention to detail is outstanding. My favourite room is the Inglenook, very peaceful, spacious and beautifully designed in a neutral colour palette.

The Woodland is close to Ellemere Port Hospital and serves for much of the day. Usual "Stonehouse" fayre. Very pleasant member of staff who checked for allergies and carried our drinks to our table as I am dodgy on my feet. We took advantage of the offer of two meals for £11.75 from a reduced menu. Pleasant food, but nothing special, except the price.

Birthday treat for afternoon tea. Put us in a room on our own so I asked to be moved to sit with everyone else dining...which they did. Sandwiches brought out on saucer sized plate then another plate with cakes and scones. I asked why not served on 3 tier cake stand as she gave some poor excuse as to cakes might melt so they don't use them hower other diners had them! They forgot to bring the strawberries and cream and champagne we ordered. Waitress was moody and unhelpful and we had to go into bar for a cocktail as they were now shutting!! Huge amount of money for poor food and service. Never been back!
