We recently had coffee and cake, followed by a light lunch a few hours later at Newby Hall restaurant - there was an excellent choice on offer, for both the mid morning break, and the lunch, and we very much enjoyed what we had - the only small thing that we felt needed attention, was that none of the staff clearing tables, cleared away the crumbs etc, or wiped the tables down, and the crumbs that were on the table mid morning, were still there at lunch time!

Fantastic day out at Newby Hall. Stunning house with knowledgeable tour guides and oh so beautiful gardens (look out for the Cornus trees). Also there was a Teddy Bear Exhibition, which was delightful. There is a play area for youngsters, an opportunity for boat and mini train rides too. Pricey entrance fee but really worth every pound. Afterwards we went to the restaurant for a late ish lunch. Wonderful to have a Gluten Free choice for a meal and cakes. Really tasty fresh food made on site and reasonably priced. Not forgetting the church (Christ the Consoler) as you enter the estate. Visit this first because the exit route from the estate takes you out a different way. The stained glass in this C19th church is vibrant and original. Lovely to see it so well kept, like the whole estate.

A clean restaurant with lots of room inside and out. Pleasant young staff. We had a mixture of sandwiches and quiche and salad. All were good portions and fresh. No problems, will go again I’m sure.

We had strawberry frangipane tart with our coffee and it was the nicest dessert we have had in a long time.

We were really disappointed with our visit to the cafe (advertised as a restaurant but really a cafe). We both ordered home-made salad and quiche, but whilst the quiche was excellent we were really disappointed with the salad, which just comprised coleslaw and bagged salad leaves; where was the tomato and cucumber etc and when did salad just comprise coleslaw and bagged salad leaf? In my book that is just salad garish and should be advertised as such. We were left hungry so then ordered cake each (mine being chocolate and my wife coffee cake) but I couldn’t finish mine as it was so dry. Overall all silly mistakes and a big let down.

A good sized cafe with plenty of seating inside and outside where some is also under cover. Nice views and toilets adjoining. Only a short distance from the Dolls House display. We enjoyed our cake and coffee.

Had expected an improvement with lockdown restrictions easing. Still a one way system in place. Scones were quite nice but not that cheap. Still using plastic cutlery and paper plates and only a paper cup of tea.

Very average, no glasses, plastic cutlery, had to ask for both, scone was lovely but I had to ask for my clotted cream to be changed as it looked off, it was clean and girl clearing tables was lovely and helpful.

The Restaurant at Newby Hall stands out among cafes and dining spots at stately homes or National Trust sites. The salads are imaginative and fresh. It was nice to have more than one gluten-free cake offering. Otherwise, menu choices for a diner with celiac disease were quite limited. Indoor and outdoor seating offers welcome options for visitors tired after walking the gardens. Staff is efficient but not very friendly.

We both had the home made soup with a Baguette. They were delicious. The staff were friendly and efficient and the place had a good atmosphere.

We visited Newby Hall, a beautiful and interesting place, and enjoyed food at the restaurant. It is attractively situated in the gardens, with nice views and good seating indoors and out. The food was good and reasonably priced and the service was fine.

I have always looked forward to lunch at the cafe in Newby Hall, but yesterday was very disappointed. In previous years I had ordered prawns with jacket potato, but this is now off the menu. I had coronation chicken which was hard and tasteless, you couldn't even taste the curry powder. The dish is served on bowls now instead of proper plates, and they seem to be rather stingy with the amount of salad provided. Furthermore, when I went to order drinks, the milk ordered with the coffee was lukewarm and the cup for the tea was dirty. It really wasn't up to the usual standard at all.

This is more a self service cafe than restaurant but it’s actually not bad and there’s plenty of choice and prices are reasonable. There’s no table menus and so it’s a bit of a chore to read the boards above counter area. We had cream teas and it was good to get a jug of hot water to refill the pot (just as well as the tea was on the strong side). Staff were cheerful and tables quickly cleared/cleaned and plenty of seating inside or out. Kids packs good value @ £5 for 5 items. If you just want a drink/snack/ice cream then you might be better off at the miniature railway ticket stand just round the corner.

I had homemade pie, followed by homemade cake :-) It did not disappoint whatsoever. The kids have lots of good options including a build your own lunchpack which my boys all loved doing & got exactly wha tthey wanted. The options for the lunch packs was much better than I have seen in other places. Water fountain providing providing fresh water, everything was catered for very well!

Self service cafe always produces excellent food, with a choice of hot meals at lunch time. However, some families may find it a little pricy.

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
