Limited menu…pie tasted as I if it had been warmed up .. hard crust .. only softened by the amount of gravy on the plate … my fault for . not asking for the gravy to be seperate … sat on a pipped portion of potato and one carrot

We popped in for a drink and snack on the first day after lockdown. We had starters with chips and it was all very nice. the staff were really nice, quick and friendly. Even the weather just about behaved itself. the outside area has a nice view across the valley though with no patio heaters or cover you are slightly at the mercy of the weather. Very VERY nice though. We'll definitely be back.

Myself and partner decided to try the Askwith Arms on Sat evening for his birthday, I really wish we hadn't wasted our money, we both love our food and was excited to be going out for a meal, we arrived on time for our booked table at 5.30pm and we're seated at our table and was given menus and asked what drinks we would like, it was a basic menu but decided quickly what we both wanted as we had missed lunch so we were both quite hungry, it took about 20 mins for the waiteress to then come take our food order, we then waited a further 50 mins for our starters to come out, I had garlic mushrooms on bruscheta, my partner had farmhouse pate, the garlic mushrooms were luke warm, 3 small pieces of bruscheta which were waffer thin, with maybe 10 pieces of chopped mushrooms on, it was very bland, if i wasn't so hungry and thought I wasn't going to wait so long I would have sent it back, when the starters were brought out to us we had no cutlery, we asked for some, for the waiteress to then go straight to another table at the side of us and proceed to take their order (we did then say to her we were waiting for cutlery), did also complain when our starter plates were cleared away, so then the mains arrive 40 mins later, I'm then hopping that surely you can't get sausage and mash wrong, oh it seem you can, the mash was very clearly microwave mash, it's not difficult to tell, the consistency and taste was obvious, the three sausages and very small amount of garden peas were ok, but mash wasn't, I certainly do go out to pay the price we did for microwave mash, my partner had prawn lingene and said it was OK, in amoungs the time we waited it was the same on other tables, watched two couples come in and be seated to then wait 30 mins for a menu to be brought over to them, we had our plates cleared and asked for a dessert menu, waited about 15 mins for the waiteress to take the menu out of the hands of a customer and give it straight to us, I would have thought in the current situation with covid that the plastic menus would get wiped down with antibacterial spray, dessert arrived chocolate fudge cake and was nice but expensive at £5.95 for a small slice. It was quite busy but with people that had already eaten and were sat getting merry, table of 6 lads where having quite a few rounds of shots being taken over when they probably shouldn't have been still in there drinking as we were told you have a 2 hour time limit that you had to stick to. Took us 2.5 hours because of how long we had to wait, even the landlord was asking customers what table number they were whilst coming out with peoples food, a very expensive meal for poor service and food. Unfortunately I will not be reccomending eating at the Askwith Arms.

Chose this for Lunch on Wednesday, a scorching lunch hot afternoon. The outside areas were busy, but there was plenty of space in the much cooler, homely, dog-friendly snug inside. The landlady and her young service team ensure a warm and friendly welcome. There is a god variety of drinks available, including a couple of well-served real ales. The menu is balanced, interesting and relies heavily on local produce, in fact some of the meat dishes served had possibly walked in the adjacent fields! Local sausages, including a gluten-free hand tied version, and one of the best sirloin steaks I’ve enjoyed for a long time, with a full range of trimmings including real chunky chips. Presentation was excellent, and looked almost as good as it tasted. The only downside was that we were too well fed to sample the dessert range - we’ll remedy this next time.A little-known gem - a real country pub offering great food and hospitality. Highly recommended

I love to write positive feedback on local restaurants and shops and leave lots of great reviews... however, we’ve just had the most disappointing meal at the Askwith Arms and I would hate for anyone else to waste any of their money going there. It was truly awful. I don’t know if it’s changed hands again but having an untidy ‘office’ in the corner of the restaurant, a white fridge next to the bar, selling cars whilst in the restaurant, the car park looks like they’re trading, 45 mins to wait for food to arrive, the wrong meals brought to our table and then removed and taken to the right table (luckily my children hadn’t touched them, but still I’m pretty sure this shouldn’t be happening), the restaurant feels unclean, no covid protocol in place, my daughters ‘penne pasta in tomato sauce with cheese on top’ was absolutely repulsive. They came and said it had been made ‘incorrectly’ and would take a further 10 mins to rectify. I said just send the garlic bread out whilst it’s cooked. We then got informed that ‘the chef’ had found a quicker way around it and it was sorted. It was brought out with what I am guessing was prawn Marie Rose sauce, mixed into her pasta the garlic bread was a whole meal bread roll toasted. Our beef roast dinner was lukewarm and the Yorkshire puddings were dry and crumbled when you cut into them... another table had been there nearly two hours and had only received their starters! Another couple left as they were so disgusted by what they could see around them. Honestly, it’s a total shame but the landlord / lady need to massively up their game if they want repeat business or a thriving business. For such a lovely village and setting, it was just horrible.

A group of twenty had our Christmas lunch here and what a lunch! It is now infamous in our group, a barometer against which all other eateries and food is measured because I challenge you to find worse. My nutroast was nutless, my bruschetta reminded me of mother’s pride slices white with flavourless slop, apparently the meat was tough and dry. Everything tasted microwaved, processed and cheap. So much food was returned to the kitchen untouched - they don’t seem to notice. No one wanted to make a big deal as the friend who had organised the meal was in tears. The look on the various recipients faces when presented with tinned fruit salad was memorable - I’m glad we had had a few drinks and have a sense of humour otherwise it would have been a tragic waste of money, effort and occasion. I have read the owners defensive responses/excuses so in advance, apologies for having not posted there and then - life got in the way.

Had been here a couple of years ago and felt a revisit was in order.Mistake.The outside, albeit beginning of March, was tatty and untidy and not very inviting and a precursor for the inside.Only 5 other customers (says something for wednesday lunch), the dining area was cold and unwelcoming. Having an 'office' and a fridge in the dining area takes up valuable usuable space and doesn't look good, not to mention (as the owner did) the dodgy electrics that meant the portable heaters didn't work.Partner asked for fish and chips with no skin on the fish, which is a given in this part of the world, only to be told that the chef(?) would not remove it!!!.Who rules the place, the chef, the owner ?, why can't the customer get what they want, only takes seconds to skin a fish. Our meal, when it came, was relatively tasty but was quite expensive for what appeared to be 'microwave meal' despite the owners insistance on their use of top quality fresh food. Frequent apologises didn't help matters. All in all a poor experience and the owners and staff are really going to have to up their game. I always 'tell it how it is' in my reviews as I find lots of places are charging premium prices and giving second rate service and getting away with it.I'll finish with a final thought, 'the customer is always right@.

Took the family of nine to Sunday lunch for my husband's 76th birthday. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was the best Sunday roast we have EVER had! We had two family members who are vegan and one vegetarian, who had a lovely choice of food, which makes such a welcoming change. The meat eaters said their lamb and chicken roasts were superb. Gravy and Yorkshire puds to die for. Everything outstanding. Not much room for puds, but we thought we would give them a try. Everything again just perfect. The puddings were also fantastic, again GF for me which was treacle sponge with custard which I was really impressed by. The service was brilliant and the hosts really friendly. The food was freshly cooked, very tasty and the portions were generous. Everyone enjoyed their food and the only reason we didn’t finish every last morsel is because we were stuffed! The only thing small niggle was that it was very cold where we were sat so lighting the fire might be a good idea on colder days.We will be back soon and looking forward to eating out on the patio in the summer.

Went online to try and book a table for sunday 02/02/2020 and found that you had to ring up to book a table, so I ring up at just after 09.00 fully expecting it to go to an answer machine. To my surprise a lovely lady answered and took my booking. Me and a friend arrived and sat in the conservatory type bit. We ordered our drinks which came promptly. Our waitress then came back and took our food order and before we knew it the starters had come out Garlic & Chilli King Prawns and a Prawn Cocktail. Just look at the photos but even these do r so justice to how good these starters were. We were both over the moon. I would go as far as to say this was the best starter I had had in some time, and work in hospitality management in some of the finest food led hospitality establishments North Yorkshire has. This was just the pre cursor to our main meals which were roast lamb & roast beef. I was toying with the idea of ordering a large but when it came out I soon realised there was no need for that. The portion sizes were huge but very very tasty. I literally couldn’t finish my main. Despite two power cuts and them running out of my wine this was really the best Sunday lunch I’ve had in some time. The owner even took time to come to the tables in the restaurant and chat to everyone. First time and it certainly won’t be the last. Well done guy. Lovely little pub. If anything this places could be marked down for is or wasn’t warm inside in terms of the temperature. Log burner wasn’t on which for me was an opportunity missed, but still gets 5 stars. Get that log burner going for the next time I come.

Poor service long waits between courses, waitress forgetting things we had asked for. Waited ages for our starters think our order had not been sent to the kitchen. Once starters came they were then duplicated but missed off two of the starters, mains were fine, desserts took ages again to come and two of our party were still waiting for their desserts when others were half way through theirs. Had to remind waitress again as they had forgotten about water for table. Foods was nice once it came but just such long waits and I would not say the place was overly busy. Wanted to like it as had heard good reports but would think twice before going again. Staff was pleasant enough but think more front of house training is required.

For an off the beaten track pub like this it needs to become a destination venue to suceed and it's a long way off that. This pub has had a chequered history having been closed for a long while until reopening this year. The overall impression is that it needs a lot of money spending on it to modernise it's interior from its current dated dull dowdy look with a musty smell in some areas. I'm not sure the staff have much experience or training but they certainly dont exude professionalism and need to have a much better idea of their products than they seem to. Had drinks on a hot day but nothing about the place tempted me to think of ordering food nor was anyone else tempted based on the complete absence of diners. Like I say it's got potential.

We were a party of three, celebrating my partner's birthday with my son. We ordered our meals. My OH had liver and onions, my son a salad, and I ordered a chicken dish but without the barbecue sauce. When our meals came, I was the last to be served, and the person serving us apologised that 'I'm sorry, Chef has put barbecue sauce on yours, is that alright'......... I said 'No it isn't, I don't like it', but she still put it on the table. When she saw 'my look' she said 'If you don't want it I can take it back and make another one but it will take twenty minutes'. My son and my partner had already been served and I'd told them to start their meal, so I said I would keep it and remove the sauce, but it was absolutely smothered and it was impossible to find any of the dish which wasn't covered in it, so I ate very little. Personally I think as she'd obviously noticed when serving the dishes, she should have said something before carrying it over to the table - and started the process of re-ordering whilst still in the kitchen, then kept the other dishes back until mine was ready. A plain chicken breast, butterflied, shouldn't take twenty minutes to cook anyway!

She only has a small appetite and many establishments have been stuffy about her requirements but not so the good folks at the Askwith Arms. She thoroughly enjoyed her roast beef & Yorkshire pudding, and although I didn't quite know what to expect with the Yorkshire pudding wrap I was in for a treat: I'd requested turkey & beef in the wrap, which was with chutney, a generous side-salad and chunky chips to boot. We were made to feel welcome, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay today. I'd happily recommend the venue - tastefully refurbished - and every aspect of its wares and service. 10/10

This pub is a lovely place to visit. We came twice over our short break in Askwith and the owners were so welcoming both times. They have a range of food on offer and gorgeous views out over the countryside. There is ample parking too. We would very much recommend if you are in the area!!!

as title, great news, it only opened a few weeks ago, so early days, but called in on xmas day for a few drinks, and John and Jane the new owners were very welcoming, and seem very keen to make a go of it, ( i should mention that they are not new to this game, and have many years experience, so fingers crossed for good things to come), as said its early days so no food at the moment, but is starting in the new year, also at the moment no land line or wi-fi, so no card machines in at the moment cash only, again coming in the new year, being a local at this pub, I am really pleased to see it back open, best wishes to the new owners in getting it back on its feet, I hope that more people will come back to this pub to support the new owners, good luck guys

Turned up on a Saturday night and it was fairly deserted. Took a table and waited ages for anyone to come and take our order...which was odd as there were hardly anyone else in. Had to ask to give our order in the end which wasn't a good start.

The food was fine but the service left a lot to be desired. The restaurant was too brightly lit and even though there were four of us (so it wasn't a romantic atmosphere that we wanted) it just felt more like a cafe. It wasn't particularly busy but we had long gaps between courses and after our second course two plates were cleared away and the other two plates were left on our table for ages until I went to the bar to ask for them to be removed. By this time the restaurant was empty apart from us so there was no excuse for this lack of service. We were not asked if we would like a dessert so we asked for the bill and left. We left a small tip because we could not be bothered to wait for the change. Also, as is usual in most restaurants these days, the waiting staff began spraying cleaning products onto a nearby table whilst we were still eating. I don't want to smell cleaning products while I am eating. Front of house are letting down all the hard work done behind the scenes in the kitchens. Please give waiting staff some training. We won't be back.

I drove and was welcomed to a truly cosy and warm atmosphere and temperature to really pleasant staff . We were treated to a delicious Sunday roast and a gluten free roast for our daughter . Our daughter was very happy to learn that the gravy was gluten free!! To her delight she found out that she could have for desert a slice of gluten free vanilla cheesecake which brought the biggest smile of the day !!!! We will definitely be visiting again !!!! We've been here before and really enjoyed the food and the ambience. A particular favourite was the menu last mothers day, which we found excellent Value. Not so much our sojourn here on New Years day. The place was very quiet so there was little atmosphere must have used it all up on the celebrations the night before. There was a special menu (limited would be a better description) which I thought was quite pricey in comparison to previous visits. My dining companions reported the fish offering to be good as was the Steak Pudding, which was wholesome and hearty. I didn't even get a taste it was wolfed down. The vegetarian option also received praise. Not so the dish I and one of my companions plumbed for; the lamb cutlets. Which were not inspiring. Indeed the outside fat had not been cooked sufficiently and was pale and gelatinous and could have been warmer and tenderer. Maybe we'll leave it until the Summer before we return.

Myself, hubby and all the family (12 people) went there for Christmas Day which was truly shocking. The soup was bland and tasteless, my Camembert melted cheese was "tough". Think it had been put in microwave so had not been melted but "cooked." My beef wellington was tough/overdone and had little or no pastry, the turkey was bland and tasteless and the pigs in blankets looked insipid and pale as if microwaved. The whole meal was appalling. My husband's daughter complained about the food and the fact that there was no running hot water in the toilets. She worked in the catering industry so knows it is illegal to serve food without it. We ended up paying for the drinks only as the meal was virtually inedible. This cost £65 each. We paid £10 deposit leaving £55 each to pay on the day. Awful meal and the staff seemed clueless over who had ordered what. Bibis in Leeds next year for us

Myself and 3 friends went for lunch today after a long walk. We all ordered the 'Festive Sandwich' that was advertised. We all ordered these at the bar which somehow took 20 minutes to do. There was 1 person serving and 2 others stood talking to each other when they could have been helping. The sandwiches arrived and they were absolutely shocking. The bread stale, filling was cold, no cranberry sauce, incorrect chips (chunky chips when asked for skinny fries), no pigs in blankets (although we were told this at time of ordering), no coleslaw when it's advertised with it on. These sandwiches are sold at £9.95 and it's daylight robbery. We were wanting to say something however not 1 member of staff came over to ask how the meal was. It's the first time I've had food at the Askwith Arms and it's safe to say I won't be going back anytime soon. From the lack of care and attention from the staff to the abysmal food and the prices, I would certainly not recommend to anyone.

Had Lunch today, with my family for our Christmas get together, from going in to leaving, everything was first class, the young barman was so passionate about his job, pouring tasting glasses of the beers to make sure I got what I wanted, the waiting staff were superb, catering for our every needs, and the food was second to none, congratulations you have a quite magnificent chef, I requested my roasted sirloin of beef medium and guess what? It came medium, in other restaurants it would have come how the chef wanted, or more likely how the chef was capable of cooking it!The vegetables were cooked to perfection, my wife stopped me asking for a doggy bag for the ultimate roasties that were left, the gravy was world class and the Yorkshire puddings would take some beating. My wife had Turkey sliced thick which was fantastic, moist and flavoursome. There were 8 of us all ordering different things and I must say, everything from the homemade pate, to the soup, the homemade bread, the chutneys, the sea bass, the lamb, was first class. The pudding selection was extensive, I went for the homemade sherry trifle but the most went for Irish coffees and other specialty coffees and teas. The whole experience was absolutely fabulous thank you so much to Andrew, Caroline and their team for looking after us.

This place is less than five minutes away and over the last few years we have tried it time and time again and it always fell far short of it's sister establishment the Stansfield Arms. Tonight there were two of us and another table of four. The food was OKHowever, we could hardly hear ourselves speak due to loud and uncouth language emanating from the adjacent bar. Had we been in a bar that is the norm, but not in what purports to be a restaurant. They could very easily create a 'bar' by closing in the pleasant room with an open fire and separating the two. Sadly won't rush back

We have visited several times before and posted positive reviews, however we were very disappointed when we popped in for Sunday lunch recently. We were ignored by staff for 10 minutes, and despite the place looking half empty, no-one approached us or offered to seat us or provide menus, yet several members of staff walked right past us. It seemed as if staff were going out of their way not to make eye contact, especially the lady behind the bar who did not seem to be doing anything else. We ended up finding menus ourselves, but could only find a Sunday lunch menu with the only vegetarian option being a curry. This seemed a very strange option for Sunday lunch and most pubs and restaurants offer a more appropriate veggie alternative to the usual Sunday roast. We approached the lady behind the bar to ask if we could order from the usual menu, or could they at least offer another vegetarian option. Her response was quite rude and unhelpful, she reluctantly went off to make enquiries, but quickly came back and said no, that was the only option on offer. We left without eating and will be unlikely to return in the future. We had previously been impressed with the varied veggie menu, but on this occasion the menu was too limited - one vegetarian option is not enough. Also the attitude of staff was quite appalling - customer service was completely lacking. This was such a different experience to our previous visits that it has put us off eating here again. What a shame.

My dog and I had finished a 6 mile walk and I was ready for coffee and a cake. Not easy to find anywhere in Otley until I stumbled on the Askwith Arms. Midweek early lunchtime. We were made very welcome on arrival and the dog friendly area is the nicest and most spacious I've come across in any pub, anywhere. No cakes on offer but I treated myself to a warm bakewell tart and custard with a coffee and it was delicious. The staff were really friendly and attentive. If you're walking or cycling in the Otley area you should check this place out. Looking forward to returning with the family for a traditional meal rather than a treat. What a find

Food and location are very good, however finding the road, it is on the north side of the River Wharfe, needs some effort if you are not familiar with the area.My choice of Fish and Chips was very tasty, and even though I had chosen the smaller-sized version, there was sufficient to satisfy my diet-hungry tummy.Well worth the effort to find and dine. My Husband has travelled past this pub loads of times recently when he was working in Ilkley and has always wanted to try it and today we got chance. We called in about 1.45pm on the off chance of a table as we hadn't booked and we were immediately warmly welcomed and seated in a lovely little 'snug' area at the front of the pub , the conservatory dining area looked lovely too , with gorgeous views across open countryside but was already more or less full with other diners which is always a good sign. After studying the extensive menu I chose the fish and chips and the old man had 'pie of the day' which was Lamb and Apricot and deemed delicious. My fish and chips were lovely but absolutely massive, I think I'd ask for a smaller portion next time !We found the standard of food very good and good value for money, the pub itself is lovely in a beautiful setting with a pleasant outdoor seating area too. The staff are very efficient and friendly, they were particularly kind to an elderly couple sat near us as the wife had mobility difficulties. We will definitely be back again, but my only slight complaint, and other reviewers have mentioned this too, are the crater like potholes in the car park which I had to negotiate whilst my Husband screamed like a demented Banshee at me from the passenger seat as he's only just got his new car and didn't really fancy me buggering the suspension just yet ! That aside, everything else is wonderful !

The views from the large beer garden at the rear are fantastic. The pub has character, olde world meets smart light and airy restaurant , at the side of the main bar area, again with great views through the large windows looking out to the side and rear. The beer is well kept and tastes great. Tim Taylors Landlord hand pulled, and a guest beer.A good selection of draught largers and a draught cider. The early bird is great value. You get to choose off the main menue, you are not restricted to an inferior early bird menu.£12.50 for a starter and main, or you can choose the main and a sweet.I had fish cakes to start, excellent cooked on site, not bought in and warmed up. Main was 3 sausages on 3 mash beds ,great taste satisfying .My partner had the pie of the day which was chicken and leek with chips and peas or mushy peas. The chips were amazing large , more of a roast potatoe texture. Great walks via foot paths and bridleway from Burley, so no need for the car.Large carpark at rear, good access at rear for less able people. The staff are friendly and make you feel at home straight away.We will be back again soon.

We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
