What a wonderful experience, food was amazing, everything cooked to perfection, starters, main courses and desserts, great service, ideal ambience and such amazing staff, all smiling, polite and super efficient. Prosecco on arrival was a lovely welcome. Favourite member of staff; Joe, lovely young man. Live singer. 15/10 thank you, can’t wait to do it again!

We decided to go someone local and booked a table for 4 ( 2 couples) on Friday night.. We were shown to our table by our waitress for the evening, who then seemed to vanish and after a lengthy wait we had to go and find someone to take our drinks order. We all shared a starter of bread and olives which we all enjoyed then had a the pan seared cod , Roasted garlic hand made gnocchi , Sri Lanken style King prawn curry and a steak. Everyone said how nice the food was but what really helped us enjoy the evening was the waitress Serenna. Very polite , professional and extremely helpful answering all our questions! Thank you Serenna. ….overall we enjoyed the evening, not cheap but good food , good selection of wine and cocktails …we would have stayed for more but the bar shut …which we thought was perhaps a bit too early for a hotel bar to close!

Went in for a plant based lunch for 2 as menu looked nice, ordered a mixture of sides and starters, the tempura battered red peppers weren't available, I asked for any other veg as a replacement and they refused-why? unable to get an explanation. Ordered a replacement of bread instead. We asked for it all to arrive at the same time. Everything apart from the bread arrived. One of the battered onion rings had what looked like a piece of fish in it and a lump of butter at the bottom of the dish. Complained, told it was avocado(it wasn't) no explanation given for the lump of 'butter' then the bread arrived, supposed to be plant based butter, the waitress returned quickly and said we had been given the dairy butter and took it away. The customer service was awful, the waitress had to be asked several times for water, The Curious Kitchen feels fragmented and this is exacerbated by a lack of knowledge and competence from the staff. If plant based is important to anyone reading this I would go somewhere else. I won't be going there again as I have a complete lack of trust in the food that is served.

The place is extremely nice inside and out, also very clean for such a large premises. The staff were freindly if a bit clueless and really on the slow side, especially when nowhere near a quarter full. It took forever to get our drinks. The food was all good, but potrions were pathetic for price paid. Mine was over £10.00 for Chicken Wings, perfectly cooked and seasoned>All 3 of them!! Along with a Teacup or smaller sized dish of Chips. The childrens Mains were more plentiful, but again appeared on the expensive side.

Stayed overnight at the Aztec Hotel and ate dinner and breakfast at The Curious Kitchen. Good service, nice interiors. Food very good. We had a perfectly cooked steak, followed by Petits Fours as we fancied something sweet but not too filling. Everything was delicious. Breakfast the next morning had a good choice of cold and hot options. The English breakfast was huge and very tasty.

Food quality was very average and highly overpriced. It was almost double what we’d normally at for the same quality of food. Prices and menu suggested fine dining, however this is far from the experience received. I can’t recommend anyone eat here for the prices they charge. There are far better gastric pubs you could go to for half the price and with better quality food. Service was slow and of a low standard. Our flood was pre ordered due to the size of our group. On arrival it was plonked down in front of us without even being offered drinks. We ate our starters before any of our drinks arrived! Would stay in the hotel again but won’t be using their restaurant.

Mixed feelings about the whole experience, the starters were okay, but the Sunday main were not at the same standard. The service was really slow, waited a longtime to get served and long break between courses and waiting to pay for the bill was a nightmare. Overall, disappointed and don't think we will return for a Sunday lunch again.

I really liked this open plan place with lots of wood, lofty ceiling. a real buzz and lovely staff. A lot of atmosphere and an open fire - I can imagine great for couples in particular. But the food… pork, cider and mustard pie: stringy and sometimes inedible pork chunks, no flavour whatsoever of cider or mustard. Some of my larger chips were not cooked in the middle - quite a rarity, pardon the pun. Overall a great location with some lovely staff but the chef is out of his or her depth. Not just my view - the comments as people left said it all - I was by the exit. Chips at £4+ and salads around £20 require more talent behind them.

By far the worst food I have eaten. Steak was over cooked when I ask for medium rare but chips was undercooked. The kids burger tasted like dried mac Donald's burger the been left for a few days and reheated. I can go on but you get the picture. Was just a bad experience esp for the price, and ruined my birthday meal.

We dined here the evening that we stayed at the restaurant using the secret escapes deal. The food was average and we had a long wait between our starters and mains. We were told it was because one of the mains took longer to prepare, however this isn’t stated on the menu & we weren’t advised of this on ordering. My partner ordered the cheese wedge for dessert, expecting a cheese clearly stated on the specials menu but received something else. This was not acknowledged or apologised for by the server who quickly put this on the table. When we raised this with our usual server we were informed there was none of the advertised cheese left, and the dish was changed quickly to a standard cheddar cheese. The bill came without our allocated £30pp deducted off and also included an almost £10 ‘optional’ tip. Although this had been stated on our restaurant booking (confirmed by reception before our arrival) we advised that we were on the secret escapes deal. The bill was altered and we were told that our food had come under the allowance so we only needed to pay for drinks, which we did. The day after checking out I received a phone call from the hotel stating there were two sums of money outstanding on our account. When I questioned this I was told one was for optional “gratuity” in the restaurant! The other sum (also from the restaurant) made no sense based on the original incorrect bill & what we had paid for drinks. Once I’d argued this I was told there had been a mistake “in the system” and we in fact owed nothing. I can understand one mistake but the fact they tried to overcharge us (and other couples visiting on secret escapes) on the night makes me think there is something more deliberate. We always check our bills & will question what we believe to be incorrect but other people may not be so careful or confident to do so. We were very disappointed with the whole experience and felt that the standards of both the food & service fell below what should be expected of a AA Rosette restaurant.

Firstly I offer a quick summary stating what we found was mostly good, unfortunately bad and/or just ‘indifferent’ about our experience at this eatery. For anyone needing further detail please find this within the full review below. Good: Atmosphere, Service, Food, Value Bad: Too much food for a ‘tasting’ menu Indifferent: Wine We have had a long and very happy relationship with this hotel and restaurant over the years. We have held events here (mostly Rotary related); we have stayed here and we have eaten both lunch and dinner here. Many of these occasions were enjoyed before I started reviewing here on TA, but two reviews can be found below, covering visits in May and November 2019. Indeed there would have been more: because we particularly like joining the Curious Kitchen for their tasting evenings. We had booked for three of these evenings earlier this year, but they all had to be cancelled because of the restrictions. Thankfully, the restaurant has recommenced them, and last night we went to the first of two that we have booked within the next month. On this occasion it was an ‘Eastern European Tasting Evening’. Now at worst this could have meant turnip soup and rye bread, or specifically Rassolnik, Sledzie and Kaszanka: all of which I have tried and found not at all to my taste. Don’t get me wrong there are many dishes not at all to my taste made in the UK, France and Italy too, for example Andouillette, Churros, Lampredotto, and Black Pudding to name but a few. This is, however, a demonstration of the wonderful world of food: it is all down to individual tastes. The Garden Room at the Aztec is a great space and a number of tables had been laid for dinner. We counted that there were to be 15 guests in parties of 5 and 4, plus 3 couples, but one couple didn’t show. Social distancing guidelines were observed by all guests and the staff. We were served a Polish vodka-based aperitif which was quite sharp-tasting with, I would say, green apple juice with possibly some additional lime or lemon juice, and there were some cucumber slices. It was good and very refreshing. One of us was driving, so I studied the wine list and decided what wine I would like to drink. Having had the Chilean Sauv Blanc on many occasions before, I decided to try the Spanish Verdejo, but sadly the cellar didn’t yield a bottle. So I tried a glass of the Marlborough Sauv Blanc, which didn’t have a great nose, but at least it wasn’t like gooseberry-pie flavoured sweets, like Marlborough wine used to be 10 years ago. As the wine breathed it lost most of its odour, but it certainly wasn’t the best. After that I had a glass of the Riesling, which was thankfully dry, but there were those distinctive musk and oak undertones that are predominantly found in Gewürztraminer wine. The Riesling sadly did not compliment the food at all. The wine was a bit disappointing to be fair, but maybe I just chose poorly, and again it’s all about personal tastes. The first dish arrived: this was individual servings of Lithuanian ‘Borscht with Crème Fraiche and Dill’, each with two Croatian ‘Baked Cheese Strukli’: the latter being slightly warm puff pastries with a cheese flavoured filling. The Strukli was light and a good foil to the Borscht: which was a beetroot ‘soup’ served at room temperature with optional Sauerkraut. The Borscht was really very good, but the crème fraiche just stuck to your cutlery a bit. The Sauerkraut was very sweet and pleasant, being especially good with the borscht liquor. The next dish was individual servings of Czech ‘Salted Hake Schnitzel with Garlic and Herb Mayonnaise’, which was served with a shared ‘Russian Salad’. This was my favourite dish of the night. The fish was beautifully cooked, and mouth-wateringly enjoyable. Tender warm hake fillet, crispy crumb outer, dressed with the garlic and herb mayonnaise that was, for me, similar to a good tartare sauce: because, for me, it had a touch of lemon about it. The simple Russian salad of cubed ham, carrot and potato, plus peas, pea shoots and hard-boiled eggs in a light mayonnaise dressing was simply perfect. Next was a Romanian ‘Potato Moussaka’ which was very large and dense, it was a layering of minced beef and potatoes with herbs, with a baked cheese topping. It was very good, but just too much and I only had about a quarter of what was served as a dish for two (but was ample for four in the context of the meal). Served much at the same time was a Polish ‘Golabki Cabbage Roll’ (a Polish national dish) in an individual portion of some appreciable volume (again one of these shared between two would have easily sufficed). This was great tasting pork meat and herbs, cooked in a whole cabbage leaf, in a sauce that was truly excellent. After eating these two dishes I had really eaten enough; I was comfortably full and content. My partner made a token effort taking ‘a taste’ of the moussaka, but did eat all of the cabbage roll. Neither of us ate much of cabbage itself as parts of it were stringy: maybe you are not supposed to eat it? The arrival of a large chicken breast, the Ukrainian ‘Chicken Kiev’ as an individual serving was eye-poppingly, and jaw-droppingly enormous. This dish was, in my opinion, quite daunting in the context of the meal we had already eaten, and was to come. I have such a sized chicken based dish with a few veg and some potato wedges for a main meal of my day! The quality of the ingredients and the cooking was totally without fault: the chicken flesh being precisely cooked, thus delightfully moist and tender. I must say the crumb coating was so marvellously crispy, and an absolute delight to eat. For me though, being accustomed to ‘British style’ Chicken Kiev, it did not have nearly enough garlic and herbs, and as a result the dish was too plain for me. Maybe that’s how it is served in Kiev? I don’t know as I’ve never been there. I did finish this dish, but I was now uncomfortably full. My partner ate about a third of hers. It was sad to see so much good food, that had so much time and love added to its ingredients, being wasted. So, that was it? Oh no … it wasn’t!! There were substantial individual servings of Hungarian ‘Somlói Galuska Trifle’ placed in front of us. This was a dish too far for me; I baulked and mine went untouched. I just had to decline this dish, as to be honest, I’m not really a ‘dessert person’; and especially so with cake and particularly sponge cakes. On the other hand my partner ate most of hers stating it was very good and could taste the rum that the sponges were soaked-in (but there again she had not eaten so much of the moussaka or chicken as I had). Of all the dishes the borscht and the hake schnitzel were the best and also the lightest. I enjoyed all of the food I ate but it was far too much food for me. This was not a “Tasting Evening”; this was a feast, of banquet proportions, and given the time restrictions, it was just too much to eat in what was a little over 2 hours. We were somewhat over-faced by the quantities of what was beautifully prepared and fabulous tasting dishes. It was brave of the Chef to take on a traditional cuisine that is based on making the best from simple ‘of the land’ ingredients, in which to produce plates that offer a traditional taste but elevated to restaurant quality food. We both agree that we are glad we went to this event, because we would never have experienced the taste of these dishes anywhere else. We look forward to the next tasting evening and will come prepared by being very hungry.

Amazing service from the staff, particularly from the young man that works there, I should of got his name. It was also possibly the best sea bass I have ever tasted! It was so fresh & tasty 😋 Everything was 10/10 even my vegetables were so crunchy and fresh. I was with my two young children and when you have children you need staff that are attentive and to have quick service - and it was just that. I recommend to book, as we was lucky we got a table in the bar area as the restaurant was fully booked but that was totally fine for us as it was a booth table so again good when you have young children. The sea bass was so good I had to have it again the next night. Well done to the management at the hotel who train their staff 👏🏼 as everything was perfect 👌🏼

Unfortunately the first available table was not until 20.45 so we decided to eat in the bar area instead (where we were advised the food was the same as in the dining room). NOT! This visit to what is, IMHO, the premier hotel in Bristol was a birthday gift for my partner and I went along, you understand, just to keep her company ;0). The Aztec Hotel & Spa sits within a few minutes’ drive from the junction of the M4 and M5 motorways just under 7 miles north of Bristol City Centre. It is a hotel we have often visited, both to attend Rotary functions, sometimes with overnight stops, and also socially to eat at this wonderful restaurant. This gift was for a ‘Wine Dinner’ which was a wine-tasting evening with small ‘nouvelle’ style food dishes to demonstrate the quality of the wine and how it matches with, and enhances, dishes of food. So, the emphasis was more on the wine with food, rather than food with wine.On arrival we were shown to a small anteroom close to the entrance to the main restaurant. There were 33 people attending so as people arrived it got a bit crowded as guests nibbled a few canapes and drank (we were told) Prosecco but the menu said ‘Champagne’. If it was Prosecco then it was very good, quite dry and more like Champagne. With the canapes I particularly enjoyed the smoked chicken cup, and the mascarpone and freeze dried beetroot cone. The salmon and chive blini unfortunately had quite soggy bottoms. We and others decided we would move through to the Garden Room where the dinner was to be held, to take our seats and meet up with other couples that we hadn’t met before. All wines were from the Rothschild wine empire and we enjoyed the introductions, to each wine, provided by the representative of Waddesdon Wine (the sole UK distributor for all Rothschild wineries worldwide). The Rothschild empire includes the famous Chateau Lafite in Pauillac, Bordeaux, this vineyard produces the very finest Premier Cru Classé claret that (a lot of) money can buy. Some of the wine being red, was a bit of a challenge for us: as red wine is not something we would normally drink, but such was the quality we both did enjoy the two glasses we drank. We had no ill-effects that we normally get when we drink cheaper (i.e. more affordable) red wine. A reasonable claret will cost well over £20 a bottle, this corresponds to three bottles of Loire Touraine white wine that we enjoy when dining at home. The menu card on each place setting described the delights to come:There were some rather good sour dough bread rolls with butter and sea salt on the table as we took our seats. To start: Artichoke, leek and black pudding. Accompanied by Baroness Nadine Chardonnay from South Africa. This dish was really good with small pieces of black pudding and small cuts of tender vegetables in a froth. The Chardonnay was quite strongly oaked which generally I find a little disagreeable to drink, but together with the food there was an acceptable taste balance achieved. To follow: Halibut, watercress, oyster, Champagne and black truffle. Accompanied by Los Vascos Cabernet-Sauvignon Rose from Chile. This dish was just excellent, the fish was beautifully cooked, tender and moist, with the truffle added to taste by the Chef. The wine was very light with the 10% Cabernet giving the wine some structure, and I enjoyed it’s freshness.Main: Venison, potato, beetroot, and chicory with Sauce Robert. Accompanied by Chateau des Laurets, Puisseguin St. Emilion. The venison was served medium rare (i.e. dark pink) and had great taste and texture. The beetroot worked really well and the chicory leaves provided a crisp change of texture. The ‘Sauce Robert’ was excellent with both complex and subtle sweet, sour and hot tastes. The wine was so smooth, exactly what you would expect from a great St. Emilion claret, rich fruit flavours and a little oak.Dessert: Chocolate, cranberry and clementine. Accompanied by Mouton Cadet Vintage Label Bordeaux. Now this dish was just sublime, so beautifully presented: a dome of chocolate with a filling of light white mouse with a clementine middle like a poached egg. Speared into the top of the dome was a cone full of cranberry compote. The wine had a strong oak nose when compared with the St. Emilion. I did sip a bit just after finishing the St. Emilion and it seemed to be really oaky. When, however, I drank this wine with the chocolate the oakiness just disappeared, so I did enjoy this wine very much. Mouton Cadet used to be a favourite when I first tried wine with my father when I was about 14.Petit fours and tea or coffee. Delicious fruit dark and white chocolates. All portions were small but very rich, the wine was served in generous measures, and the 5 wines served made up well over a bottle of wine each. It was very pleasant evening with good food, good wine, and good company in very smart comfortable surroundings. Service was what we have come to expect at this very good restaurant and we will be looking forward to supporting some of the special events in the coming year.

My friend and I have often taken lunch in the hotel bar area which has always been a pleasant experience. For a change we reserved a table in the restaurant today but when we arrived we soon discovered that only the bar menu is available at lunchtimes. We decided to stay anyway and we were shown to a table. And left there! No offer of a drink or a drinks menu was forthcoming - we had to ask for a menu and still no offer of a drink after 10 minutes. Staff looked chaotic, uninterested in serving us and the dining room was a mess (it was 12.30pm). It is clear this hotel is trying to do too much - a wedding so a busy bar, brunch, lunch, spa packages and afternoon teas all at the same time. We actually felt we were an inconvenience! So we decided to leave and drove to the white hart at Littleton in Severn where we received attentive excellent service from the moment we walked in and enjoyed excellent food. It will be a long time before we will venture back to the Aztec for our usual lunch in the bar area.

Myself and my wife both work at Aztec West where this restaurant in the Aztec hotel is situated. We decided to eat here just by chance because there was a problem getting home because of an accident and the traffic was completely backed up . We turned up at the restaurant only to be told it wasn’t open for another half hour so we decided to have a drink in the bar . When it opened we were told by the restaurant manager that because of the traffic problems a lot of his staff couldn’t get in but we were welcomed to to eat there as long as we didn’t mind a little wait. Well I can only say that the service was first class as was the food. I think i had one of the best burgers I’ve tasted for a long time. My son was also with us and he said the stake he had was first class, and that boy knows his stakes. The staff were very friendly and helpful as my wife has an unusual food allergy and they sorted it all out without a problem. Considering they were short staffed they were extremely professional. My understanding is that the restaurant has just been redone. Looking at the menu I was fairly excited about what was to come but the price did stick out. The food came in really small portions and lacked taste. The prawn linguine has some great quality prawns in it but the only other thing that could be tasted was the parsley. It lacked taste and size which meant it was just overall disappointing. I then wanted to try the cheese board to be informed that it was only one cheese that would be served with crackers etc. The place has great potential but needs to live up the prices it’s charging.

We have used this hotel for special occasions numerous times, over recent years, but left feeling let down and disappointed after our visit last Sunday. The staff were as always very pleasant and welcomed our party of nine. We were then informed due to the low number of bookings the Captains Table (a buffet style starters table of meat fish and salads) was not available but the chef would make a selection for anyone wanting to select this option. This was very regrettable as part of the enjoyment of dining out is selecting one's own choice of starter from the normally extensive range. Why wasn't I informed prior to my visit as I would have gone elsewhere. The choice of mains were hake, chicken or beef rare. The chicken was a simple breast served very bland with no sauce and quite unappetising the beef was rare as described but very poor quality being quite gristly and fatty: one of the servings quite inedible. The selection of fresh vegetables was very good although should of arrived at the table somewhat hotter. Having invited guests to celebrate a my mother's 90th birthday I was quite embarrassed over the food served and certainly will not be rushing back.

Sunday lunch. Choice of two roasts. Beef was reasonably cooked - suitably rare. Vegetables (sometimes a meagre serving) today were all green (fine), not over-cooked (that's good)., and a reasonable quantity... some marks for that. BUT the food was tepid, which really spoils a meal. A starter of parsnip soup was quite insipid. Could be better - the surroundings are nice, but the food lets the place down.

Having booked and arrived on time we were shown to our table and left with menus. We finally got a drink after 25 minutes and ordered our 'while you choose' menu items. Not particularly impressing. Olives and pork belly were nice. Mains were ok but slightly disappointing, 'buttered seasonal vegetables' were huge chunks of courgette/ squash/ etc not nicely cooked and slightly bland. I would have appreciated being given a drinks menu (so as not to find at the bill that a glass of Pinot Grigio was £10). Service was slow and not attentive. We shan't be back again in a hurry.

We came here for a small work lunch - 5 of us. We were booked into the restaurant which looks lovely but was chilly. The service was very slow and some requests were forgotten. I had the land and sea deli board (posh ploughmans really) which was nice but I had one half slice of bread which was nowhere near enough for the sherry glass of pate. I asked for more but none appeared. The portions varied a lot but the food was nice as it should be for the prices they are charging.

Food tasty but not amazing for the price and portions small. Our group split around 3 round tables unlike last year when we were on long thinner tables so easier to interact with each other. Tables not set properly for party eg empty box rather than balloons etc on other tables and no crackers which other tables had.

I stay at the Aztec Hotel and Spa at least once a year. It is a first class boutique hotel and recent renovations have resulted in one of the nicest lounge areas of any place I stay worldwide. It is so cozy and comfortable. Couches, upholstered chairs, fireplaces, bar ... it all is very much like a wonderfully designed living room in an upscale home. The rooms are top notch and the pool, spa and fitness center first rate.

Bar menu (main restaurant menu not available until 6:30) was far too limited - even more so for my vegetarian wife. Freshly prepared and cooked food that proved quite tasty, but my tart with pomegranate and pine nut salad didn't have any pomegranate or pine nuts on it! They were apologetic and replaced without fuss. Think I was given a free pint of cider while I waited for another. Despite the adult food tasting very nice, it was expensive and very poor value for money. The children's menu was poor. My daughters pasta dish was spaghetti, peas and sweetcorn in a tomato sauce. Won't be eating here again if I can help it. To be honest, I got the impression that early diners are an inconvenience that the hotel feels reluctantly obliged to cater for.

Le restaurant se trouve dans l'hôtel Aztec et normalement j'évite ce type de restaurants, souvent très cher et très moyen. Located within the Aztec Hotel, this is a good sized restaurant with a patio area beyond it. Despite being on a large business park, I actually thought this looked to be quite a decent place, without the bland, identikit feel of many such establishments. There were some slate tiles on the floor, and an impressively high, arched ceiling with a few old oak beams. A counter off to one side was filled with ice, I assume this has a fish selection on occasions although it was empty on our lunchtime visit. The lunch menu that we were given had a fairly concise selection of dishes, with a selection of hot and cold sandwiches plus a few of the usual suspects such as fish and chips, burger, salads, etc. Prices were perhaps a little on the steep side, with most of the options being at least a tenner, and the prawn linguine coming in at £17.95. I went for the oak smoked chicken salad with a creamy garlic dressing, and this was quite a tasty dish with some tender pieces of chicken and plenty of lettuce and rocket. Whether it was really worth £12 or not is another matter, but then you’re not going to be expecting a venue such as this to be cheap. A colleague’s fish and chips looked to be a generous portion and was well received.Three scoops of ice cream for dessert were pretty good, with malted banana being an unusual flavour, whilst the salted caramel was really very good indeed. Sticky toffee pudding on the other side of the table also went down well. The guy serving us was helpful and friendly, although the service was a little slow – we had booked for 1:00pm and didn’t leave until 3:00pm. Overall though, this was a lot better than I had expected, and whilst it’s not the sort of place I’d choose to go to in a personal capacity, for a business lunch, or if you’re staying at the hotel, it was really quite good.

We decided to visit the Restaurant at the Aztec Hotel after hearing lots of good comments from friends. We went for a family Sunday lunch, we were a family of four with 2 children age 2 and 4. We were really impressed with the hotel, I was surprised to find a real log fire in the restairant, which was a very warm welcome on a cold day. Not many hotels have this unique feature, the restaurant décor was also impress , it felt more like a country hotel then a hotel just off the motorway .We were sat by the window with views onto a patio area and a lake, the table was ideal giving us lots of space for the kids during and after the meal, allowing the kids to colour in whilst we enjoyed a drink. On arrival we received a glass of sparkling was included in the price of £21.95, there was a v I little p's menu which also very reasonable at £5.50 for one course or £6.95 per person for two courses. The staff were very attendive and gave great service, Sam in particular was fanastic, Nothing was too much trouble. They had a taste of region table which I had for starter, this is every seafood lovers dream, with an erray of fresh local source produce! My husband had the soup of the day which was also delicious. We all opted for the Roast Beef dinner, the beef melted in our mouths, it was lovely and tender. There was plenty of delicious fresh vegeatbles and nice roast potatoes. The puddings were equally delicious. The kids menu was a hit with the children too. It was a very enjoyable experience, good value for money and we would thoroughly recommend the restaurant to others.

Ate at the hotel as part the evening Early Bird 3 courses for £16.95 as I was saying there on business.Reasonable variety of choices for each course, I chose Rufus Teagues Crispy Belly Pork Bites to start, 3 pieces of deep fried breaded belly pork - hence the crispness served on a bottled BBQ sauce. Main course the herbed chargrilled butterfly chicken breast with lemon served with skinny fries - the chicken had a sprinkling of dried herbs (and tased of dried herbs) and no taste or sight of any lemon not even a serving of fresh lemon. It tasted and looked like nothing more than a 'Birds Eye' chargrilled chicken piece, it certainly wasn't a fresh chicken breast. The fries were fine, the side serving of watercress was limp. Dessert of fresh fruit salad which consisted grapes, orange and more grapefruit than any other fruit and a dollop of thick cream, must have been left over from the breakfast fruit salad. I've never had grapefruit in a dessert fruit salad before and it made it quite sour in taste. The food was all edible, absolutely average and completely nothing special which was really disappointing. The glass of wine I had cost almost as much as the food. On a better note the staff were really customer focussed and on the ball and the bar area very contemporary.

There are, arguably, two reasons to visit Downend. One is on a summer’s afternoon to watch Downend CC play cricket with the bar in full swing and plenty of boundaries being scored as the ground is relatively small; the other is to pay a visit to Melanie’s Kitchen. This delicatessen shop is a positive cornucopia of cheeses, bakery items, biscuits, chutneys, artisan breads etc etc. The man who serves at the cheese counter (who I assume is not Melanie!) is a fountain of knowledge on local cheeses and knows all of the local cheese producers, when their cheeses are at their best and is happy to provide advice to ensure that you will leave well satisfied having enjoyed a sensory and culinary experience second to none. It’s full marks from me.
