I was last here in the 1980s and it was awful. I am very glad to say it has improved 100%. The service was great. The interior is an amazing improvement, my friends meal was good, unfortunately mine was not, these things happen, on the whole it was a resnoble experience.

Great location, lovely atmosphere. Staff were welcoming, helpful and attentive. Ordered the banquets B meal for 2. All the food was absolutely delicious, the crispy duck was fantastic and maybe could have had 8 pancakes instead of 6, I'm sure we could have asked. Lemon chicken was tender, chilli beef crispy, mixed veg was tasty. Finished off with a little ice cream and coffee.

Lovely food and great service. We had the lunch menu @ £14.99 and it was fantastic. Highly recommend it, and it (lunch menu) was available on a Saturday too.

A long-established Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh. The store is on the second floor. The store was set up as a Chinese restaurant, but unfortunately the taste of the food was far from authentic Chinese food. This may be the result of it being customized for Europeans, but as an East Asian, I don't think it's a taste I'd be satisfied with.

Happened upon this kind of by accident and proximity and so glad both of those things happened. Welcoming, attentive staff and food was just wonderful.

Having been a family favourite, we ate here last night. Initially the welcome and service was awful, we felt like we were bothering her being there. The 2 soups were bland and disappointing, the main meals were watery and the beef was tough and grey. Lemon chicken was floating in an oily watery sauce and was therefore soggy and flavourless. Very disappointed, not sure what the recent change has been but standards have fell dramatically.

This is a Cantonese restaurant on the 2nd floor. The decor was attractive and Asian. Our group of 10 shared wonton soup, spring rolls and dumplings for appetizers. For main course we had bon chon chicken. - spicy beef, salt and pepper squid,, shrimp, Hawaiian fried rice. The taste was fair, dishes were similar. Definitely bolt the Cantonese flavors we experienced in China or New York. But, it’s Scotland!

The food was bland. The beef was tough. I wanted to love the place but was very disappointed.

We, unfortunately, had a very disappointing experience here. We came for our one year wedding anniversary with high hopes as we love to explore higher end Chinese restaurants. The service was beyond below average. Unfriendly. Unwelcoming.Unprofessional. Never once did any staff ask how the food was…appetizers nor main. My wine and my husbands beer was finished after the appetizers and not once were we asked if we want another drink nor even offered water. The special chow mein was horribly dry. Pork and beef like leather. No taste to the noodles. The lemon chicken was not lemony at all and like soup. Breaded king prawns was lacklustre and sauce out of a bottle. Liquid-y sweet and sour pork with no depth of flavour. The server didn’t even bring the cucumber, spring onions and hoisin for the duck starter. We voiced our opinion in a respectable way and wasn’t offered any apologies nor discount of any kind…not that a discount was what we were seeking but it just showed the level of care…piss! Obviously we will not spend our money here ever again.

It was good food with a polite staff. We were quickly served but it was a bit pricy.

I have been to the Rendezvous Manny times and the food is excellent we had a party for 6 and as usual the service was great.

A packed and rainy night, this restaurant took us in without reservation and served some amazing food. It came out extremely fast after serving some really good sweet and sour pork, kung pow chicken and egg friend rice. We had to have the pineapple fritter for dessert which came with two fritters and a scoop of ice cream. The fortune cookies with the bill were a fun touch. We couldn’t fault the food or service here, thank you.

We enjoyed an early dinner at the Rendevous, described as the best Chinese restaurant in the city. The menu was extensive and included all the dishes one might expect in a Chinese restaurant (if your expectation is that of an American who eats a lot of Chinese food at home), with some Thai preparations as well. The food was very good, the service attentive and the prices reasonable. We enjoyed our dinner and would definitely recommend the restaurant.

Service charge was on the bill so had to pay even though service wasn't that good and they charged for takeaway box for the leftovers ,and the lift hasn't worked for years, so disabled access non existent okay but not brilliant

Went here hoping we will enjoy a good Chinese food as it was recommended by our friend. Only to find out, it didn’t live to our standard. As someone who is Asian, this is not what I am expecting it to be. If only I knew it’s doesn’t taste good. I could have stayed home and cook Chinese dinner my self. It is also expensive. A salt and pepper squid cost £15.00 but I could only count the squid. It looks mouthful because of the crumbs but it’s only a few. Trust me. I think I only ate 5-7pcs of small slices of squid. Also, the egg fried rice is the worst fried rice I ever tried. It tastes bland. I couldn’t even see an egg on it. What a shame! Will not come back. Sorry and will not recommend. Thank you.

Best of Chinese Restaurants! Go there!

This place has been around for a good few years and if you like old fashioned style Chinese restaurants this is for you. Firstly though you have to get over the scruffy, littered entrance area off the road. The restaurant itself is large and Chines lanterns are scattered across its ceilings. Modern it certainly isn’t but we found the staff to be competent and nice enough although the candles on the heat plate hadn’t been checked and didn’t last long. Food was fine and drinks not to badly priced.

The food from here is the same high quality every time, absolutely dependable and delicious even for the simple things. Staff are polite and efficient.

There must be better Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh. The food was copious but bland. The ingredients were not of the best quality but at least the cost was low.

Just back from my lunch. I read some reviews and initially thought some people were very hard to please given the number of very good reviews written, the restaurant was established over 50 years ago, so clearly in my head, must have been doing something right!. However now fully understand where these dissatisfied customers are coming from. I eat often in restaurants -lunch and dinner, what can I say. This is probably the worst meal I've eaten, the worst service ever and given the restaurant has been here well over 50 years, quite shocked at the calibre of the food and service which was zero!. On entering the restaurant we bumped into a guy on the stairs, who we thought was a customer. . He mentioned he was going out for a cigarette, entering the restaurant we wondered if there was any staff at all, no welcome whatsoever . To our horror the guy on the stairs was the guy who served us, totally unprofessional, extremely casual and not smart at all to be a waiter. He never said a word or offered any service at all. No simple thank you or any word was uttered, basically the food was dumped on the table! The meal, absolutely awful and the not of the standard from many years ago, when I used to go to the Rendezvous. Totally disappointed as our lunch was for a special occasion. Do these restaurants learn anything from these reviews, I'm not so sure. The meal was overpriced and definitely not value for money at £14.99. We certainly won't be returning!

Fantastic food and efficient helpful staff. Great value for money

The welcome was weak; staff seemed down and disinterested though hardworking and fast serving. The food - prawn toast, chicken satay, Singapore noodles and fried bean curd in garlic, ginger and spring onion sauce were all very bland; very little hint of fresh ingredients, no chiles . The wooden screen next to us was thick with dust. The entry is dingy and dark. I know hospitality is suffering financially, but there’s no excuse for bland boring Chinese food.

Last visited over 45 years ago and still fabulous. A bit more ambient lighting would be nice. Very bright but besieging deviated.

Foarte bună si gustoasă mancarea, ar trebui puțină organizare in a servii toate persoanele aproape in acelasi timp. Au un meniu complex, băuturi chiar si din România, vinuri deosebite, foarte frumos restaurantul traditional chinezesc si am înțeles că este cel mai vechi restaurant cginezesc din Edinburgh Scoția! Merită să vizitați macar o data acest restaurant.

This hidden gem is still as fabulous as it was on a Sunday night before the Rutland and Busters back in the day! Chicken yellow bean still my favourite. The satay skewers, wafer paper prawns and king Szechuan prawns also delicious. Couple Tiger beers and sides and very reasonably priced. Was packed to capacity all of the Friday night with all ages and table sizes. Great food, great service 5 🌟

There were seven of us - it was supposed to be ten, but the weather that day had been awful and blocked roads and flooding meant that three of us couldn't make it. The table we'd booked was ready but now too large for us; we were shown to another, just the right size with no fuss and the minimum of bother. The menu was really good, but we eventually opted for one of the set banquets. The food that followed was excellent and far too much for us to finish, much as we would have liked to! A couple of "doggy bags" were offered and handed out. The service was very good and as already said, the food was excellent! I can't wait to return.

Can't judge much other than we went in hoping to get lunch at 2.20pm and were sent away, quite rudely I might add. Outside a sheet states: lunch served between 12:30 and 2:30pm... perhaps it was their rota rather than information for the public?

You'll only see the doorway off the street, but it's a great little establishment. Great service and great food! 😃

We have been eating at The Rendezvous for almost 40 years and never had a bad meal.,the good is far superior to most other Chinese restaurants I’ve been to. The deep fried shredded beef is one of our favourites. The quirky located and old fashioned decor are big plus points for me. We were there yesterday evening again and could not fault it. Highly recommend.

Excellent food and great service! We popped in on Saturday night for a quick bite to eat. Everything was delicious. Especially enjoyed the chicken satay starter and kung po king prawn main. Definitely recommend for tasty and traditional Chinese food.

Limited vegetarian options. Starter being standard - spring rolls, mains Thai Curry - spicy and OK, boiled rice overdone, dessert - apple coated with crusty pastry + ice cream - OK, two apple balls not eaten. Service OK - could have offered more options.

Family meal Children, parents and grandparents We arrived to be seated and welcomed. Drinks order taken. Starters and mains ordered. Food was absolutely delicious Staff were very attentive especially with the children gave them training chopsticks. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. I’d highly recommend.

Really good value lunch menu.Very fast service

We had the special price lunch from a good selection of dishes that was very good value.The food was delicious the service excellent and very pleasant staff. We had a glass of wine and a beer and the bill was less than £40 so we will return at a future date maybe for an evening meal.

Very reasonably priced, tasty food with large portions. The lemon chicken and Peking prawns and a side of rice were more than enough for me and my wife. That chicken was moist with a nicely crisped skin. The prawns were fresh and flavorful. The staff were at the ready and genuinely helpful. I just wish that we had more time in this city to try out other dishes!

Restaurant is difficult to find as it is on the first floor and has a small entrance had the budget lunch three courses and two large glasses of merlot bill under thirty pounds what's not to like.

I had a nice lunch here at Rendezvous restaurant. The place can be a bit hard to find as it is less obvious (go in through the door and take the stairs up). Quite an extensive menu! I ordered the bean curd family style and egg fried rice. It also came with some crackers. The bean curd dish was delicious. I asked for it to be spicy and indeed it was spicy which was nice! Overall it was a good experience.

Delicious food, not heavy or greasy at all. Probably the only Chinese I've been to where they don't oversalt the food. Love the decor, it looks like it hasn't changed since it opened in 1956 and I love that, not going with flashy trends. It's a simple decor and let's the food do the talking.

Top Chinese restaurant. Food is excellent as ever, although could be bigger meat portions. Heavy on the vegetables, which suited my wife. Service very good 👍.

Massive a la carte menu, fantastic food and great service. This restaurant is a hidden gem and has been open for as long as I remember. We would definitely recommend this restaurant and we will definitely return soon.

What's not to like, full of flavour 😋

We have booked to come here several years in a row for a birthday celebration. Despite being explicit in the booking instructions about our order and the fact it was a special birthday, this year it was a complete let down. The food is lovely and service was good but we missed the special wow factor that kept us returning year after year. Won’t be returning which is a shame!

Went here after my family visited years ago, the food was very good especially the hot and sour soup. The staff were ok not great didn’t feel very welcome when entering. Would maybe try again it again

Duck spring rolls didn't taste good noodle dishes were great Think rolls were off as 2 off us were up all night at the toilet with stomach pains and diarrhoea and had to take immodium still not feeling great today

We have been calling into the Rendezvous from time to time for 40 years or more but never again. Four of us booked a table and we were shown to it quickly. When the food started to arrive it was cold, not even lukewarm, and we had to send it back. It came back to us warm - not hot. The restaurant was cold and draughty and we left as quickly as we could. Staff seemed busy and almost offhand. Never mind, there are lots of other restaurants in Edinburgh.

We've been customers of the Rendevous for decade's, but have now given up. The excellent food overshadowed the (frequently) rude and off hand staff. We visited last weekend, and although the food was "fine" it is a poor imitation of its former quality. The final straw is wedging the front door open to "freeze" you out at the end of the meal.

A nice and tidy restaurant. Friendly personnel and the food was quickly served. Good and healthy food for a good price. They also have local beers. Absolutely recommendable.

First time here and will definitely be back! The staff were friendly and very attentive. The food was wonderful and would recommend the lar chee king prawn.

Fond memories of this Restaurant from the 80's so my chum and I rounded up the grown kids to share in the memories. Food was lovely, but...service from rude, aggressive lady spoiled experience. Restaurants add service charges on bills but these are discretionary, so asked for ours to be removed - invoking more hostility. Simply won't return and overshadowed some lovely food moments.

Excellent takeaway and the only place where you can buy takeaway cheaper than if you sit in. We had chicken sweet a d sour, and chiken mushroom both with egg fried rice all for £14. Will return.

The welcome was ok not particularly friendly but busy probably. Food not very warm and came in 4 stages for 6 people so everything was cold but the time we could all eat together. None of the staff smiled whilst serving us. We were told...

Travelled over from Fife with Friends from Glasgow, as had always enjoyed meals here since the 70’s. So disappointed from the minute we stepped through the door. Our first interaction was to be greeted with ‘we need table back by 7pm’ no hello or welcome....

Very good takeaway experience. Quality fresh vegetables and it's great to get an actual cut quarter of a crispy duck. Well done Rendezvous.

Rendezvous serve the best Chinese curry in the city. It is full-bodied, flavourful, aromatic and the meat (I've tried special curry and beef curry) is high quality and tender. The onions are just right and have that wok hey.

Five of us had an excellent set dinner. Food was fresh and tasty. Really can't fault this restaurant. Definitely recommended.

Best Chinese restaurant in town.

We got a takeaway from here. It was ok but nothing spectacular and some of it was a little greasy. For the price compared to some other locations it cannot be faulted as it is very reasonable but the quality is just ok. I wouldn't rush here but if I wanted a Chinese meal and nothing else was available it's OK.
