Went here for Sunday lunch Very disappointed with food.Starters were OK, main dinner just about OK , desert of sticky toffee pudding dry as a piece of sandpaper. Coffee weak as water, plus an Irish coffee tasted like whiskey sugar and water as coffee was so weak. Had been here before, during last break in lockdown. Had looked forward to coming back and it was a big disappointment. We as in our family will not be coming back again.

We had pre booked the 2 course Christmas lunch menu which sounded lovely at just over £20 per head. When we arrived I was told my soup starter was not available even though I'd pre ordered & paid a deposit per head. I was offered an alternative soup being carrot & parsnip. When it arrived it looked very watery & was so bland when I tasted it I could only say it was like dishwater & clearly had been knocked up in 10 mins from leftovers with no seasoning whatsoever. This was sent back to the kitchen & I looked forward to my main course arriving.Oh dear! My main was described on the menu as slow cooked brisket of beef in wadworths ale & horseradish dumplings which sounded delicious. The meal I was presented with was a couple of slices of tough roast beef in gravy (made with gravy granules) & a soggy dumpling on top. Accompanied by lukewarm cabbage & reheated roast potatoes. My first mouthful of beef was so chewy & clearly not what was described on the menu, this also went back to the kitchen. My family also pre ordered the roast belly of pork which arrived lukewarm, accompanied by chewy crackling & 2 plates also came complete with string which the pork roll (not belly) had been tied in.By this point to say we were dissapointed is an understatement. No pub or restaurant should be sending food of this standard out to customers.Myself & my daughter accepted the offer of an alternative meal which was of a better standard. We then paid the reduced bill as offered by the manager then left.Based on today's experience I definitely won't be booking here again. A memorable lunch but for all the wrong reasons.

We were out for the day after visiting the National Trust. We love pub food and when we saw the Hunters platter - scotch egg, sausage roll, pork pie, ham, cheese, bread, pickles and salad we thought this sounded delicious. The staff were lovely and very good customer service, but when the food came out I was so disappointed. The sausage roll was like something from Greggs, no scotch egg and not told about this, served x2 pork pies, which were both microwaved, the pastry was soft and the meat hot and soggy, really not what you expect. The bread was paper thin and toasted hard, the ham and cheese was fine. With a microwaved soggy sausage roll and and microwaved pork pies, the meal was not good at all. Very disappointing.

A VERY long wait for Cuppa Soup and stale bread!Visited here on a Saturday with friends. Waited a good 30 minutes before even being offered drinks!Told we could order via the app but the Soup of the Day was “not available”, it was however when the waitress came over. When the soup arrived it was watery and Luke warm. I’m pretty certain it was Cuppa soup. It had the taste and consistency of it and the 3 bits of bread that came with it were stale. My husband and friends had the fish finger sandwiches with a very sorry bit of cabbage on the side, described as “Rainbow Slaw”.Awful experience!

We arrived without booking. We asked if we could be seated outside and we were. Given a table number, we sat at our table. Young lady came to take our drinks order, then we ordered food which came very quickly. We both ordered fish and chips. Fish was incredibly fresh with very white flesh. Chips were lovely. I would very much recommend this pub/restaurant. Service was impeccable and food was amazing. We will definitely come here again! Payment was contactless and every table was sanitised before the next guests arrived. Separate ladies and gents loos which were very well sanitised

We arrived at about mid day Sunday, we had not booked and the restaurant was reasonably busy, especially outside. It appeared clean with the usual social distancing measures in place. We were unable to get a table outside so elected to eat in the bar area. The staff on duty were pleasant, polite and attentive. The service was prompt and professional, we felt in no way rushed or pressured into finishing our meal even though the restaurant was getting busier. The young lady who spoke to us on arrival, booked us in and showed us to our table deserves a special mention and is a credit to the establishment. The food we had was good and plentiful, even if part of the advertised selection was not available and substituted for something else. I cannot however comment on the hot food as we had cold platters to share. Overall an enjoyable visit and not bad value for money.

Visited today to celebrate exam results. Pre booked to avoid disappointment. Had to ask after sitting for 10 mins to order drinks . Then the food came out. I was too shocked to even think I should take a pic. 4 roasts... awful... we waited for the veg to arrive to find actually it was already on our plates the smallest spoon of red cabbage and I mean a couple of shredded bits on our plates with 3 mini carrot sticks and I think there may had been a flat parsnip on one of our plates. Little one had bigger Mac cheese than our adult meal. Quickly paid the over priced bill ... and enjoyed a icecream from the icecream van across the way. Oh and ladies toilets were out of order so if you needed than you had to go queue at the public toilets across the car park.

Very thoughtful. The room was nice with good amenities. We had to order our breakfast the night before ( due to COVID ) which was only a continental breakfast (served 8-9) with good croissants and fresh fruit, cereal, muffins although the cappuccino was a bit weak with not much froth. Visited here for a pint with the missus on a little visit to Lacock in Feb 2020. It was a Friday afternoon after lunch on the 14th. During a visit to see family in Atworth we decided to visit the quaint little village of Lacock for a few hours to get us out of my uncles cottage. We don't really have places like this in Liverpool so when we arrived in Lacock after a brisk drive from Atworth it was a lovely surprise. After walking around the village we decided to call into the Red Lion for a well deserved pint. It looks like a nice pub from the outside but when we entered it wasn't what we expected. All the internal seating is organised into dining seating and we looked around the pub for stools/bar tables etc as we just wanted a drink. I also have to say that even though it was a cold day for some reason the fire was not lit which was a huge disappointment. Anyway we proceeded to the bar and i got a half pint of the IPA and the missus a lager shandy. We decided to sit down at a table behind the fire place tucked into the corner as this was the only place there was to sit and we fully expected to be asked to vacate the table as we were not dining, fortunately we where not moved however the concern was still there. The IPA i had was awful, infact as an avid IPA drinker the IPA i had (which i think was the only one available on draft) had virtually no hoppiness in it, barely a taste of citrus and the malt certainly was tired. I'm glad i only had the half pint. The missus had no complaints about her shandy. My experience of country pubs in Autumn/Winter time is based upon many a visit to such pubs in North Wales, Yorkshire and the Lake District (Windermere) and for me this pub just lacked that inviting 'cosy' feel that i'm used to. The fire was not lit and it was a cold grey day, there was no casual seating available, the selection of ales on draft was lacking and generally it just wasn't inviting. As we didn't eat here i think it would be unfair to give a lower rating as the food may have made up for downfalls however we had already eaten and just wanted a drink but its such a shame. For me and the missus unfortunately this was just a place to park the car, have a quick drink and a toilet visit, nothing more. If your visit is just for a drink then i can't recommend. Would i go again? Probably not.

We had our lunch here as a family of three (with an infant) on a day trip here from Castle Combe. It was a lovely cosy pub with many other customers who have babies/children and dogs. I ordered the fish and chips which was excellent - batter was unbelievably crispy with tender fish inside. My husband had the steak and ale pie which he was pleased with. We ordered the spinach and ricotta ravioli for our infant daughter who really enjoyed her meal. We were also pleased that our request for no salt to be added to our daughter's food was happily fulfilled. The staff also did not make a fuss out of the mess my daughter made (she is just turning one!) although we did our best to clean up after her. In summary, family friendly pub with good food, worth a try if you find yourselves in Lacock!

We came here on Valentine’s day for lunch and the meal was excellent. We started with Baked Camembert to share and it was simply the best that we’ve ever eaten. The Camembert itself was beautifully prepared and came with focaccia to dip and a Roast Garlic Jam which was delicious. It took around 20 minutes to serve, probably because I was at the back of a queue when ordering, but it was well worth the wait. We followed that with catch of the day and a Red Lentil and Vegetable Biryani, which were both very good. After that we were full but were very happy with a reasonably priced meal.

Me and my partner decided to visit this establishment for dinner. We both ordered the beef burger, which costed £13/14, expecting a fresh handmade burger and chips. After waiting 30mins being the only ones in there (now I can see why) the food arrived, I dread to think how long it would have taken if it was perhaps a little busier. The burger clearly came from frozen and out of a packet, tasting like rubber. The burger bun was soggy and the chips tasted as if they were cooked from frozen as they were incredibly hard. Not once did the waitress come over and ask whether the food was okay. Therefore I didn’t want to make a scene. At the price the burger was served at i would be expecting more. We will definitely not be returning.

We went to The Red Lion for a family meal which we booked in advance. On arrival we were seated at our table and there were only 2 other tables taken, the rest were empty and staff were very slow clearing / cleaning tables that were empty. When we ordered our food my husband ordered starters only and asked if he could order mains in a short while. The waitress said that they were due to get really busy and he would probably have to wait a long time for his mains if he didn't order at that point. She kept pushing for him to order but he didn't as he didn't feel very well. We waited 40 minutes for our food which was delicious! My husband then ordered his mains once ours arrived which didn't actually take too long to arrive. But when it did appear it was well presented and was good. 3 roasts with different veg on bit random. And garden peas with cubed carrots, also random. They were fine tho. The beef was well done , we didn't mind but others might. Ordered 2 desserts , a chocolate and coconut torte and passion fruit cheesecake. Both ok but not amazing and just popped on plate with no decoration.. all in all an ok dinner but for £120 for the four of us and only 2 starters was on the exspensive side. So let me just say that when I arrived, I was famished. I found myself in Lacock, a town that is over 800 years old (yes, Harry Potter has been filmed here), as part of a Premium Tours group, and having had a small lunch, I couldn't wait for dinner, which, for me, was shepherd's pie. I admit that as an American, I haven't had too much shepherd's pie over the years, maybe just once or twice before my visit, but to me, Red Lion's was pretty darn good! Considering that we were part of a large group, Red Lion was expecting us and set about preparing our meals in advance, so the wait to be served was brief. One thing I did notice was the irregularity of the portion sizes; my mom even noted that my plate seemed a little smaller than hers and my sister's. Overall, I think this small restaurant handled the large group well and provided a tasty meal. If you happen to find yourself in Lacock for any reason, I'd definitely recommend stopping in for a meal here.

I wish we'd looked on trip advisor first! The breakfast we had was ok, apart from my poached eggs feeling suspiciously like they'd been cooked the night before & then reheated the next morning. Quite rubbery on the outside. The young waiter was very friendly I'm glad to say. It was the meal we had Sunday night that was the problem. Miserable staff, unwilling or incapable to engage with customers, behind the bar doesn't help for a start. The only menu on offer was the Sunday lunch menu, which we didn't want, especially when it had been such a lovely warm day, we wanted something a little lighter. The only other alternatives were a curry (dubious curry!) which my husband had...small portion with equally small portion of rice." Port in a storm" he called it as he was so hungry. I had the bacon Caesar salad because that's all there was. My husband began with a very salty broccoli & stilton soup, I had pate with thin slivers of a very dry thin bread....no hot buttered toast, & a few strands of lettuce. I had to leave most of the pate as there was nothing to eat it with once I'd eaten the four small pieces of rock. My salad came out without the bacon... I sent it back & it returned with some strips of cold bacon thrown on it. This was not a Caesar salad as I know it to be! Very little dressing on it, of which had no flavour & very small pieces of over boiled eggs. I left half of it, I couldn't eat any more....such poor food made by so called chiefs, quite laughable. We did voice our disappointment & we were given 15% off the bill....not enough in my view. Whilst we were there, a party of 15 came in & had Sunday lunch. We couldn't help but notice that at least 5 of the lunches were sent back, reasons unknown but the dishes certainly looked for from appetizing. Another table of 6 were also having problems when we left. They don't seem to care....they are in a tourist hotspot & trade off that alone. They don't care if you don't come back because a new batch of tourists will be in the next night/following weeks/months to be served the next batch of gruel! We certainly won't be returning.. Lacock is a beautiful place to visit, but certainly not to eat....unless you take your own picnic that is. It's very sad, establishments don't seem to care these days about serving good quality produce that's been cooked with a bit of love or passion, or any attention to detail, training young staff up to a high standard & of course polite customer care.....apart from the young man who served us on Sunday morning that is! I do wonder what our foreign visitors make of our cuisine??

Pleasant staff. The quinoa salad wasn't very good and looked as if it was partly a leftover from another day.

We called in The Red Lion en route. Easter Saturday and glorious weather so very busy. We managed to get a table in the garden in the sunshine. Husband went inside to order drinks and food. Pleasantly surprised that the food arrived in 15 mins. I had a burger, chips and coleslaw. Good. Husband and children all had fish and chips. Delicious thin crispy batter. Only rated 4 as ordered 2 adults and 1 child’s but couldn’t tell the difference between a child’s and adults as 2 portions were fairly small. Also 2 portions came with garden peas and 1 mushy peas but all ordered with garden peas. Didn’t complain as we were happy with the food, quick service and the start of our holiday in beautiful weather and only April !

Being set in such a beautiful and popular location, I had high hopes for our stop in the Red Lion for drinks. On arriving at the bar to order a drink, It quickly became apparent speedy service, and indeed service with a smile was not to be on the cards. There was no system for food orders and drinks orders leaving customers confused. Customers were allowed to obviously jump the queue, the bar staff disappeared completely to collect glasses by the point of the queue length becoming ridiculous - reaching the garden doors! No apology, and no care on the waiting customers who were clearly becoming agitated. Garden tables outside could do with a scrub down too unless you’re partial to sitting on bird poo. I won’t be returning.

Stopped here for lunch after visiting Lacock Abbey. They have a good selection of local beer and an extensive menu including gluten free options. We had a gluten free Brie cranberry and bacon sandwich and chips, more than sufficient for 2 as the sandwich was a triple decker. Definitely worth stopping if in the area.

I went here as part of a business group. We had a group meal, which turned out to be from the Christmas Menu. However, it was very good. Reasonably priced for both food and drinks, and good quality for both. Added to this was the great location. The village is worth a visit for its heritage, with this beautiful old pub sitting in a high street lifted straight out of a Charles Dickens novel!

I have given the Red Lion a pretty bad score previously so felt after my last visit, I had to amend my review. Our area had lots of snow which disrupted everything as usual. Our colleague had trained down the night before and stayed at the pub. We were supposed to pick him up the following morning and drive him to the meeting. Not possible, roads difficult. But lunchtime we decided to at least try and get to the pub and have the meeting there. Anyway, the pub was busy with village folk and tourists who were Lacock-bound due to the weather and the only staff were the few who lived in so they had their work cut out. The lady working the bar (sorry no name or job title) was busy but really efficient, polite and made sure everyone knew they were her priority, apologising for delays and always smiling and applicable. The atmosphere was lovely and the lunch we ordered was great. Really pleased that I am able to turn my last review around. Excellent. It is the staff who make a place so make sure you look after them and appreciate all they do!

Wow what a find....The service was so incredibly friendly and welcoming. Booked another table for dinner next week! The owners Jamie and Lauren even came out to chat and make sure that we had everything we needed and ended up staying longer than expected to enjoy another perfect cup of coffee in a stunning country pub....Not local but its going to become our new local pub. Well worth a 30 minute drive.

We had arranged to have lunch here which was amazing. The garden is lovely with a great atmosphere. The food was delicious, staff friendly. Our only concern was when we were all sprayed with mayonnaise a practical joke within the staff that went very wrong. Apologies were given, it made for an interesting afternoon we were given a bottle of bubbly.

This was our first visit to Lacock, and we weren't sure what eating facilities it would have. We weren't disappointed with the Red Lion. It was quite busy, but we found a table in front of a roaring log fire, and it was lovely. The food order was taken promptly and we didn't have to wait long for it to arrive. We chose one of their sharing boards, and everything on it was delicious.

So my boyfriend and my friends came for a Sunday lunch at 3pm on Sunday for my Birthday. We booked in advance and when we arrived it wasn’t overly busy. My boyfriend went to the bar to order drinks and our food, waited for 15 mins to be served when the staff were chatting to each other ignoring him. Then when he gave the table number the girl said ‘ you sure you’re not lying, boys like you make up any old number and it’s annoying, where is the table’, he came back confused to why she was so angry when he gave her the right number. We ordered three beef roast dinners and a pork roast. All came with no Yorkshire puddings and no stuffing. The veg came five mins after our meat and potatoes arrived. When After ten mins our Yorkshire puddings and stuffing hadn’t arrived I asked one of the staff if she could please check the kitchen as we hadn’t got them. She didn’t apologise she just said ‘right il check’ she then didn’t even go into the kitchen and began to wipe tables. I asked her a second time ten mins after that and she said she would get them. Still no sorry. Long story cut short they never arrived. I wouldn’t mind if they had run out, but there were plates coming all the time with them on. She then cleared everyone on our tables plates away and left mine. I was so polite to her and I think she and another member of staff were so rude. Both were blond hair younger girls. The food that we did get was lovely that’s why I gave it a higher rating than the customer service deserves. Would be rating a 1 star if it was based just on that. Won’t be returning

If it was not for the friendly and charming service, I would not even bother to rate this place as the food was so awful. We stopped at Lacock for a meal and found the little village besieged by the crew and cast of Downton Abbey, the movie. This gave the village a charming atmosphere with buntings and old fashioned signs every where. Unfortunately this does not apply to the Red Lion. My steak and ale pie was inedible; the crust needed a hammer to get through to the dry and tough, what looks like, meat inside. The smoked haddock was more potatoes and a little bit of fish mashed into huge round tasteless balls. Why do pubs even try to serve food when they are not up to simple cooking? On the other hand, the service was friendly and efficient and that is the only reason why I am reviewing this place for the food is not worth writing about.

We came out of Lacock Abbey and mistakenly chose the first place we spotted for lunch. I consider £25 for 1 sandwich with chips, one small plate of fish & chips and drinks to be way too expensive for the miserly portions that were served up. The quality of the food was generally ok, but nothing to rave about. The bowl (a derisory term) of chips that was served with the sandwich "for only £2 extra" must be the smallest portion of chips I have ever seen in my life.
