Having stayed two nights, Saturday and Sunday along with another couple we found the venue to be like a curate’s egg. When Googled, the establishment is designated a 4-star hotel, it most certainly is not. We had rooms numbers 4&5. A major security issue was found that our key for No. 4 ALSO opened No.5 . Good job we were not strangers in adjacent rooms. Both rooms had no hot water to the bathroom sinks albeit the bath and shower did? When brought to the attention of the young girl who had the role of “deputy manager” I said we expected an appropriate adjustment to our bills for the inconvenience when we left. We were subsequently informed that, having spoken to both the “in absentia” manager and the owner, the response was that there was nothing wrong and everything was as it should be. No one could be bothered to even come to the rooms and see for themselves. Accordingly, no reduction was offered or made. Housekeeping was below par, toilet roll not replaced, only one fresh bath towel for two occupants and if anyone can be bothered to look up at the bathroom Velux window, the cobwebs are a sight to behold in Room 4. Breakfast on Sunday was a muddled affair. Having ordered tea we had to ask for cups, out of four, one was chipped another dirty. Teaspoons also had to be requested. When orders were taken, told no white bread, we have run out so only brown available and I was then given an extra half of tomato to make up for the mushrooms that were also found to have run out. This was all down to the supplier apparently. Monday morning started with the same story of shortages plus salmon was now added to the list of shortages. By chance, the white bread and mushrooms arrived in time to amend our orders as originally intended. I find it hard to comprehend that the establishment has not only a manager who has such a laissez faire attitude but moreover, also the owner. Good luck with that going forward . On a positive note, we all found the quality of the food to be good and the pricing sensible. We could not find enough positives with the Red Lion Inn to make a return visit at all likely, sorry.

We were looking to break our journey back from Suffolk to London and knew of the Red Lion. The Host Buffalo Wings were declared tasty and a hit. Sounded a bit spicy to me. We were there for Sunday lunch so roasts it was. The roast beef was a good portion and a little pink in the middle. They have rooms in the garden.

Excellent pub and lovely Inn. My daughter and I stayed here 3 nights as she was attending a conference. We both greatly enjoyed the excellent breakfast that was included with the room (clean and very comfortable). I also had some really delicious dinners. The service was consistently excellent and attentive. I am wondering if staff has received further training/support since negative reviews below, or if they simply have managed to find better people. In either case, we had a wonderful experience over 3 days, both as guests of the Inn and eating at the pub. Highly recommend !!

Christmas lunch 2023 saw oxidised steak tartare with split yolk served - returned to sender. Never have I been here when heating is switched on. One light bulb flickering. Another spent. Main of butternut wellington dislocated and burnt with boiled to paste sprouts. Baked Alaska belongs in the tundra. They couldn’t be bothered today. Off to celebrate their own christmases not to help with that of their guests.

Just to be clear, I didn't end up eating here as service was so awful, we left before ordering. Table of 6 booked for 7:45pm. At 7:53 we were asked if we could hurry up and order because the kitchen was closing. How to make you feel unwelcome! Needless to say we left soon after.

Rather disappointing. Poor service (starter dishes served same time as main course), accompanied by some food not being up to scratch. My son had a lovely roast beef dish but my fish n chips and grandson's chicken goujons were over cooked, dry and like cardboard. Complaint fell on deaf ears. It would appear staff are either not properly trained or could not be bothered.

The Red Lion provides a flavorful escape for those who cherish a good culinary journey, with dishes that speak volumes in taste and presentation. However, potential diners might want to be wary of the fluctuating service levels, seemingly dependent on the establishment’s busyness. The quality of food stands out, with each dish being a testament to the chef’s dedication to taste and aesthetics. The gastronomical delights here predominantly hit the right notes, blending tradition with modern flair. However, the experience can be slightly marred during peak hours, as the service tends to wane, with staff appearing overwhelmed and responsiveness dwindling. For those seeking a harmonious blend of flavor and atmosphere, The Red Lion does offer a pleasant experience, especially during off-peak hours when service is more attentive and the ambiance more relaxed. Rating: Food: ★★★★☆ Service: ★★★☆☆ Overall: ★★★½☆

We stayed at the Hinxton Conference Centre. The Red Lion is the only place within easy walking distance. There were 3 staff on duty. The manager and two women. The women were stressed and the service was very slow and chaotic. It was clear that the younger woman had had minimal training for which the management must be blamed. When we queried the time delay in getting our food the manager aggressively falsely accused us of having shouted at the waitress. This is something we'd never do as our daughter works in hospitality.

A great village pub. We went there yesterday for a business lunch and it was truly excellent. Great atmosphere, superb service and and really tasty food. There was a good selection of drinks available, and the beer was well kept. The pub is a welcoming, attractive garden And cool well decorated interior. There is a varied menu, food only took 15 to 20 minutes to arrive which is great for lunchtime. The only thing I could fault it on is that there wasn’t a curry on the menu!

I was really nervous after reading the last few reviews, especially as it was really easy to get a discount slot booking but it was really lovely. We sat in the garden and enjoyed a very drinkable house white watching the sun go down. Food was delicious, the burger was proper steak as opposed to a patty and the chocolate tart divine. The smaller portion for kids was perfect for our 8 year old as he’s getting too big for kids portions and it really hit the spot.Staff were so lovely. There was a wait at times but like all of us it’s getting used to the new normal and it must be difficult to balance costs with customers, we were happy enough as it was a lovely night for sitting out.

On arrival we got seated quickly however service was slow for menus and we were never offered drinks. Ordered two RARE steaks and chips at a steep price of 26 pounds each. At this price I expected a perfectly cooked steak however, it was grilled not pan fried which wasn’t mentioned on the menu and that lead it to have an awful burnt taste. One of them being completely charcoaled on the bottom side which the chefs had poorly attempted to hide. Once the staff had been told about this problem there was no apology and were very blunt. Once redone (pan fried) it tasted lovely. Overall was a little disappointing and won’t be returning !

We were really looking forward to coming here with our friends, none of us had been here before but had heard good things. What fools we were. For starters we walked in and said we had a table booked at 1 and the rude women behind the bar snapped at us with an attitude asking for a “NAME” and pulled a face. When we finally sat down the waiter came over to take our order he took a sudden dislike to my partner, when he was ordering his food the waiter kept pulling faces at him and rolling his eyes when my partner was talking and almost was trying to take the Micky. Me and the other lady just couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Yet he served all other tables fine. When the food came it was like it had been sitting there for a while as it was luke warm and didn’t taste very nice. After all this we all felt very disappointed and all agreed we will not be coming back to this appalling pub.

False advertising. We were looking forward to a dinner here after reading the website. Oh how wrong were we.The website makes out that it has awards and a pretentious setting. What we got was watered down drinks and soggy food.Even one of the “chefs” was sitting with his feet up on the sofa watching tv when we arrived. The girl on the bar was pleasant but within 20 minutes of us being there , her age and inexperience showed. Is it legal in this age to have a 16 year old managing a venue??? Poor girl seemed overworked and complained she had to miss out on her school work.Dessert was the best item but severely overpriced at £7.50.The pink exterior walls were all cracked and could do with a freshen up. We had Sunday lunch there. The restaurant was pretty empty - only 4 tables occupied - but the kitchen managed to leave an item off one of the starters which had to be asked for and then what was provided was toasted sourdough not melba toast as advertised. One of the Sunday roasts didn't have red cabbage on it. It's not as it they were under pressure from being full! The food was very, very average pub grub and nothing like what the pretensions and prices would make you think it should be.

We were looking forward to going out for a birthday celebration family lunch. Having visited many times before we were looking forward to a good meal out but I am sorry to say that we were quite disappointed. The service was prompt and the food arrived quickly however the quality of the dishes were not up to the standard we expected. We had the gammon and one of the portions was just a massive chunk of gristle and fat which had to be picked apart to find the meat. The child’s pasta was also a little sad looking. For desert the price charged for 2 scoops of ice cream (around £4) was extortionate given the tiny size and total lack of care on presentation. Overall for a total spend of £100 for five people we felt the food was poor value for money. We will not be returning in the near future.

Good food in a building which manages to be historic, welcoming and cosy at the same time. Decent, if not mind-blowing selection of options both at the bar and on the menu. As with the setting, the food combined being homely and comforting with sophistication. The only minus was the lavender panna cotta, which was a lovely idea but could hardly be called panna cotta any longer given how firm it had been allowed to get. Service was really good - which is a credit to the only person I saw working there the whole evening. Hard times! We’ll be back in any case.

We visited for a family dinner, following the recommendation of a friends. We booked via the website, and found the staff to be very responsive and accommodating via email before (we had to change the booking a couple of times). The pub and restaurant are delightful - very traditional, beautifully decorated and full of character (perhaps could do with some music for a bit of atmosphere?). We went on a Saturday night and were amazed/confused to be the only ones eating in the restaurant? The menu was succinct (which I prefer), and had offerings for everyone. It wha also refreshing to see dishes accompanied by things other than chips (although chips were available). We had the soup, scallops and sausages for starter, and the pork belly, fishcake, fish+chips and steak for main. There were empty plates all round! The waiters were polite and friendly, although perhaps not the most attentive. I will 100% be going again...and again and again!

Four of us enjoyed a delicious Sunday dinner (two beef one lamb and one veg) served by friendly polite staff with prompt non-intrusive service.. The restaurant was bright and well kept - what more can you ask. Whilst I appreciate the merits of Trip Advisor - I used it a tirelessly when booking hotels and restaurants for my boss - it now seems to be a case when wanting somewhere really special to eat or stay you ask a personal friend for their opinion or you visit yourself beforehand however I realise that this is not always possible. As pointed out by the management of this establishment most people seem to be more likely to post a negative review after a bad experience than a positive one after a really good meal. I try my utmost to do both as i am very aware of how many view these reviews and base their decision on recent reviews. I think we should all realise that most establishments can only work on the policy of "you can please most of the people most of the time" and that "some customers will never be satisfied"

This was one of the worst, most unpleasant, meals I have eaten in the UK for ages. The chef obviously has a think about using wasabi and spices - with everything! So, my scallops starter arrived covered in gravy (yes, I kid you not) so brown and impenetrable and unappetising that the mounds of fiery wasabi that had been piped onto the plate were hidden. So that when one tried the scallop with some of the unavoidable sauce, it blew your head off. My guest couldn’t eat hers. I felt sick. Next up was the lemon and thyme spatchcocked chicken. Sounded nice. It arrived SO over cooked and dried out that fortunately the chef must have noticed so sent it accompanied by the same gloopy brown sauce he’d used on the scallops - with the wasabi taste as well. It was revolting! Not least because the charred bits of chicken from where it had lain on the griddle were bitter and really unpleasant. We won’t be rushing back. A contender for worst meal of the year.

I visited on a Friday lunchtime. In spite of there being several parties from nearby science parks and offices, there was plenty of space and service was exemplary. This is written from a vegan perspective. I have long appreciated the Red Lion for its beer and friendly atmosphere, but vegetarian options have always been limited. Vegan options are not indicated on the menu and I had to ask for guidance. The squash curry with braised pak choi and wild rice turned out to be vegan and was very well done. The staff were sufficiently 'vegan-aware' to be able to steer me away from the tomato, avocado and rocket sandwich because the bread wasn't vegan. Credit to them for that, but what a shame they don't offer a vegan alternative. Pubs like this could lead the way and it wouldn't take much effort for my rating to rise to four stars.

In July 2017 we enjoyed 3 lovely meals here whilst visiting Duxford airshow. So we looked forward to visiting again this September. Sadly, it just doesn't seem to be the same place, though. We arrived 5 minutes early and were shown to our table, ordering our drinks as we sat down. We then had quite a long wait for our drinks to arrive but ordered our food when they did. More than an hour later, our food still hadn't turned up, despite other guests arriving much later and completing their meals whilst we still waited. Eventual, a waitress realised something was wrong and checked with the kitchen - our order had apparently been lost. This was a big deal to us as my husband is diabetic so was at risk of having a hypocrite (it was 9pm by then). We were going to leave but we're told our food was about to arrive. 10 minutes later it did. My husband's"gammon, egg, chips & piccalilli" turned out to be one slice of fairly tasteless cold ham, a handful of dry and almost inedible rather solid blocks of overcooked potato and 2 overcooked and over-salted eggs. No picalilli. He left half the "chips". My food was OK, albeit not really the "iron flat" chicken advertised, and with a small portion of rather slushy mash. To be honest, certainly not worth waiting more than an hour for. As we clearly weren't happy, we weren't charged for our food, just paid for our drinks. But we cancelled our booking for the following night. It's such a shame, as this place had been so excellent the year before, and we now see from other reviews that our experience doesn't seem all that unusual now

A friend and I went for dinner the evening after the Bank Holiday. We both ordered the Steak and Ale Pie. There was a bit of a wait but we didn't have a problem with that, a pie takes a bit of cooking! However, when it arrived we had to send it back because whilst the pastry was hot and crispy the filling was just off being cold. When it came back it had clearly been microwaved as the pastry had all but collapsed and had become soft and greasy (the meat was absolutely scalding), and the mashed potato had a 'crust' on it. The cabbage was too chewy to eat.

Very limited menu, poor slow service, food average (lesson needed in summer pudding - dry white bread?!) ages waiting between courses, cold coffee. What’s happened here, used to be such a good restaurant. Won’t be returning.

Looks lovely from the outside. Everything else it totally mediocre - Quite expensive mediocre at that. Very poor menu selection, and low quality food. Expected a lot more, hence the title.

We had exclusive use of this venue for my birthday party with about 60 friends, family and guests. The day started off well when we spotted a Spitfire from nearby Duxford in the sky over Hinxton in the afternoon, the weather was excellent, as was the welcome and the venue.

We have been eating at the Red Lion for a number of years. The bar area is dog friendly and it has a pretty garden. A bar lunch is generally very nice and the beer is good. However, we ate in the restaurant on Friday night with friends and it was a very dismal meal indeed. The restaurant was empty but for one other couple, so very lacking in atmosphere - possibly the heat of the evening had taken its toll. The menu itself was short and uninspiring. Seeing little else that tempted me, I chose gammon, egg & chips. A pub classic. The chips were definitely not freshly fried; they were flabby not crisp and both eggs were hard and thickly sprinkled with chopped herbs. The gammon was one third fat to two thirds meat. Underneath the ham was a strange, gloopy medley of vegetables, swimming in some vinegary sauce. I recognised carrots and not much else. It made the whole meal wet and unenticing, was not mentioned on the menu and did not go with ham, egg and chips. Bizarrely the meal was served in a bowl. I had peach cobbler which actually wasn’t a cobbler at all (a cobbler topping is a scone type mixture - this was simply a lumpy crumble topping and was more top than fruit). It was all so disappointing as we really, really like the Red Lion - in fact we held our joint 60th birthday meal there in 2016 and it was fabulous and we’ve visited many times since.

Wow we have just paid £159!!! For one night in shabby (not chic) annex building adjoining a very depressing pub.

Visited twice in the last year on a Friday lunchtime and I have to say it is one of the nicest pubs / restaurant we have been in for some time. The food is exceptional and the service cannot be faulted. Highly recommend the rump of lamb with sweetbreads and the guinea fowl. The menu is small but the quality is superb. The restaurant has some lovely tables and loads of character. Will be back soon.

We were celebrating a big birthday with our family and chose the Red Lion. From the start they were very welcoming and changed our table around for us. Big smiles accompanied the menu and we were all spoilt for choice with all the delicious options. We shared some starters and then our main meal. All the dishes were absolutely excellent, hot, well presented and with generous .

We went to the Red Lion for a Sunday lunch with friends. We were presented with an inventive menu: interesting ingredients subtly juxtaposed to very good effect. Some of us had, and loved, gurnard cooked in a salt crust .There were also some classic dishes, such as roast lamb. The puddings were equally origninal and well executed.

The staff were lovely, which is more than I could say about the food! Small round bowls , not ideal for a stacked burger, very messy. Gammon egg and chips and piccalilli ! Cold eggs , warm chips and 2 large chunks of carrot and a bit of onion in piccalilli sauce which was probably the best bit ! . Veg medley acceptable. Overpriced for what you get , have had much better. Have been lots of times over the years and this is the worst. Gone downhill in my opinion and will probably go elsewhere in future.

An inauspicious start to be told fish and chips was off the menu because it had all gone by 8pm. With only a handful of bar dishes to choose from our selection was quite restricted. The good news was that three of the four of us went for gammon, egg and home made pickle - very tasty and well presented.

Stayed 3 nights recently with our dog. The accommodation is located in a separate purpose built building at the top of the garden, with each room having their own entrance from the outside, which is always better for dog owners, rather than trailing through a hotel.

Four adults mid week had an excellent meal here. Veloute soup delicious , cod cheeks superb and cauliflower medley great. Thoroughly recommended. Also a family meal for 8-80 year olds was great for all on another occasion. Olivia Dawson

The slightly scruffy sign, being consumed by surrounding hedgerow at the northern entrance to the village off the A1301 might make you think twice about visiting but if you do, and you should, you will not be disappointed.

My daughter booked for 6 for Mothering Sunday at 5 p.m. We had an excellent meal and a lovely time. The service was just perfect, the right balance of being friendly and efficient. The food was good, our pink roast beef cooked to perfection. We will certainly hope to come again.

We had a lovely meal at The Red Lion Inn. I chose the game pie which was filling and delicious. The lady serving at the bar was welcoming, polite and attentive. The building is truly wonderful and I loved looking at the framed photographs. As we not very near the fire we were slightly cold because others were sitting near the open fire(but I understand they have now turned up the thermostat). I strongly recommend that you give this historic inn at try!

We came for Sunday lunch as we thought it was a good stopping place during a long drive north. The roast was great but the fish dish not nice at all. For £17 there was a fish sausage...why I had no idea...and this was served with a puree of artichokes which while tasty were cold and served on a very chilled pastry base. Around the plate were scattered fried onion pieces and jelly tot sweet lemon zest pieces. Oh and it was capped off with a chilled and jellified egg yolk. I would normally complain but we had 4 hours of driving ahead and there were no other options that I wanted to eat. Altogether a weird eating experience.

I’ve been going Hot Numbers for years and it’s never been a cheap option but the venue and quality of food always kept me coming back. Sadly that balance has slipped away of late and the pricing on the reworked menu doesn’t justify the food they’re serving now. On my visit today I ordered the ‘new’ mushroom on sourdough and it arrived as a single piece of bread with a covering of mushrooms, which yes is what it says it will be but it was comically small and looked like something you’d get on a child’s menu. At £11 it’s just too much (in my opinion) and I’ll be heading elsewhere for a while. The plague of flies which are covering the lights on the upper floor isn’t particularly nice either, how no one who works there has thought to try and sort them out is a mystery.

We waited 50 minutes for the food which was poor. My husband returned his burger and the sweetcorn was reheated and soggy.

Generally an enjoyable experience. We were met with a very friendly and warm welcome. Food was very good, choice of drinks suited our party well and waiting staff were friendly and polite. The only negative was that the time between ordering and receiving our main courses was quite a long period (20mins approx,) but that didn't spoil the evening in any way. Certainly will consider returning

My wife convinced me to go here, and I regret nothing: Poppy (the owner's dog) greeted us at the entrance and entertained my daughter while waiting for the drinks and menus, the location is beautiful and relaxed, the staff is warm and welcoming, the food is fresh and cooked to perfection, the service is very efficient and professional, and the garden gives a feeling of "home". On top of that, the ice cream was the best I have ever had. 10/10, I would recommend to anyone who wants to have a great time with the family and friends.
