We love coming here for food ! Never had a bad meal yet & the staff are always friendly and helpful 👍 the Sunday roast is amazing 👏 🤩

Friendly, accommodating and attentive staff, quick service, delicious food served in a timely manner. Pub interior is very cosy and clean. However, 1 star is knocked off due to the arrival of a group of people with four wet, smelly spaniels - not nice when you're trying to enjoy a meal. Perhaps have the downstairs or upstairs where no dogs are allowed? Not everyone likes dogs, especially where food is served.

Lovely pub very welcoming, all the staff were really helpful and nothing too much trouble. Great atmosphere full of the locals as well as visitors. The food was outstanding and the service at the table was superb. Every single member of staff was helpful and Fergus went out of his way to show us where our allocated car spot for our cottage was on our first day. Great pub and staff 👍🫶🏻

Went for food, they were able to squeeze us in very last minute. The food and service was so good! The chap who booked us in, greeted us and recommended wines for us was so lovely. The food was fab, I love carbonara but usually won’t risk ordering it, but the one here is great. The beef shin was also delicious. Great spot, highly recommend- thank you!

Booked a table for some food, was in a nice room away from the really busy bar. Food was good and beer was good, will head back again if I'm in the area.

Called in on a very wet Saturday afternoon for a spot of lunch and to dry out after a very wet walk with our Springer Nice friendly welcome and some nice beers on offer A small menu but the food we opted for was superb Two pasta dishes, pumpkin and clam were both devoured. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely pub in a beautiful village serving a nice range of looked after ales. Didn't pre book food but had a table free and we both enjoyed a very tasty fresh pizza. We were able to change the pizza to toppings of our choice and spiced them up a bit aswell. Great chap behind the bar think he was the landlord very happy and helpful def be returning again thank you.

Dined here about 3 weeks ago whilst staying in Hawkshead for a few days. Food was absolutely excellent. All Italian menu where everything is made from scratch; pasta, pizza dough,breads,even the ice cream. We booked well in advance as we know how busy it can get and as expected the restaurant was full. Lots of veggie options or things that could be made veggie if you asked. All the staff were very friendly and helpful as usual. Just simply couldn't fault it, one of the best meals we've had in a long while. We'll be visiting again over New Year and will definitely be eating here then

Called in on the hoof and although they had booking they found us a table for two. Had a lovely meal. The pizzas were delicious and the tiramisu was to die for. Highly recommend but would say to book first so you aren't disappointed. Great staff and nothing was too much trouble.😎

Popped in for a drink. A few beers on the bar and the ones we had were nice. Decent enough place, nothing not to like but a bit quiet.

Stopped here after a long day walking. We hadn’t booked but we were offered a table very last minute. All of the staff were very friendly and polite and helpful. The food is all Italian based and was fantastic, from the starters to the mains and the kids food, it’s was all really well made and tasty on so many levels. I cannot recommend this pub for food enough

Popped here a couple of times whilst staying in the village. We had the Sunday roast one night which was excellent. The rest of the week it serves Italian food The kids menu was really good value. Local beers were great too.

Visited on a Monday evening in August and was very glad that we had made a reservation, as there were no spare tables available, and as people were leaving they were being reserved for later diners. It's nice to have different variations on the menu compared to the usual pub grub, There is also a good variety to choose from. The food was freshly cooked and tasted excellent and the prices were all very reasonable.

Visited this evening, very limited menu with over 4 options not available, £28 for a sirloin steak meal which was chewy and tasteless along with a Lamb Ragu with nil flavour . Mentioned the steak was fatty etc and response with ' I'll mention to chef ' ....not even an offer of a complimentary drink . Worst eatery in Hawkshead and I've tried them all.

Food prices were high but same all around hawks head nice just to pop in for a drink tho

Fantastic Roast beef ciabatta and fries.

Very happy with the food and the drink. Service was quick and the landlady was cheerful and helpful. Would recommend if in Hawkshead. We would certainly visit again. There is no on site parking.

In Hawkshead for a week. Booked this hotel for three evening meals. Perhaps that says it all. Excellent service, good honest food and great ales. Definitely recommend.

The Red Lion was the best pub that I visited during my few days in Hawkshead. They've got a good range of ales and the food is reasonably priced and tasty. Recommended.

Stayed in Hawkshead for a long weekend, this pub was a godsend, great staff good beer and food and the regulars were a good lot as well.

Great pub, we have eaten here many times over the years and for lunch and dinner this week on several occasions. The food is always well prepared, the beers well kept and the family running it are friendly with the service. We had Sunday dinner today April 24 and it was one of the best we have ever been served (see picture).

A very friendly Inn, very warm & welcoming, good food and drinks. Sky TV is available too. Altogether a nice place to enjoy when you're in the village.

Ordered a steak n ale pie, got a ham n leek. Came with warm mushy peas, asked if I could get the veg, and they had ran out. Tried to get the correct pie but they had run out. Blamed the pie confusion on the young waiting staff, even though it was clearly management communication issues. The manager was very rude, but another staff member sorted us out in the end...

No issues with being a single diner. Limited menu but delicious veggie burger (asked for no sauce which they did and they gave me another pot of ketchup). Friendly staff, happy to check out what was in the burger and make changes . Music but not too loud. Cosy

The meal was very small for the money and the dish was cold. We had the lamb rump and, although it tasted nice, everything was luke warm at best. We then had the sticky toffee pudding with custard and the custard was cold and the fresh strawberries on the side were frozen in the middle! When I told the staff, they apologised but I felt that it wasn't sincere. Probably would not return. Expensive too.

Quite a small pub but with good quality food.

The girls and gentlemen in charge of bar reminded me of the good hospitality of the restaurant owners and service in Seville, they also have Cruzcampo Seville beer. It’s small happy and good vibe

Very friendly, had a 3yr old with us and staff were lovely. Games to play on hand if you fancy an evening of family fun too. Food excellent, cost reasonable. Will definitely go back.

Fabulous pub, had some lovely meals here in the past and always stop here for a pint at the end of a long walk. Update: had the Sunday roast (Lamb) today. It was a perfect meal, every mouthful was a delight. The staff were so friendly and welcoming.

Lovely atmosphere and lovely food. Service was great by very friendly staff. A definite recommend for a bite to eat or a couple of drinks in the evening

Lovely pub, building of huge character and importance to us. We have spent some special wedding anniversaries there. My husband was a little disappointed no one recognised or remembered us! Main issue seemed to be central booking as we ended up with a twin room and not a double, booking lady possibly needed to be clearer. Food was delicious, right up our street. Highly recommend (if you don't mind a sloping floor or two).

Stayed here 2 nights. Very small cozy room needs some love really, but clean and tidy. Breakfast is outstanding. Main meal the same.. Food is very, very good here. Alex the host, thoughtfully reserved a table for us on the Friday when we arrived late..as the place was rammed... you need to book beforehand as it gets busy. Reasonable stocked bar, but it's all about food here.

Lovely local pub with board games to play while you wait for your food. The Partridge supreme was delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their meals except for the fish and chips which was rather greasy.

A Great Stay at The Red Lion Hawkshead. My recent visit near Ambleside to The Red Lion Hawkshead was fantastic. The blend of modern comforts and historic charm created a unique and enjoyable experience. The staff was welcoming and attentive, and the refurbished pub and cozy bedrooms made for a comfortable stay. The local flavors in their cuisine and the inviting atmosphere added to the enjoyment. Overall, The Red Lion Hawkshead is a gem in the heart of the amazing Lake District. I highly recommend a stay to experience the warm hospitality and delightful setting! 🌄🍻🛌

Friendly pub with a good range of ales. Unfortunately they weren't doing food when I visited.

Stayed here with my partner while visiting friends. A cosy pub, our room was part of the attic, spacious bedroom, but not high enough for me (no fault of the pub just my height)! Mind the bathroom was the size of an aircraft toilet and a 🚿 like a ⚰️ with a glass door! At least it was en-suite, space a premium. A full English breakfast was nice and filling, served with a smile. (Despite while waiting to be placed at a table, one guest was very rude to the owner. I did feel it was not the place for a confrontation in front of guests!) Hosts helpful and friendly. Pub was near fully booked with it being the Cornoation weekend and a party 🥳 going on in the square. All-in-all an enjoyable stay. And King Charles III popped in for a quick waltz.

Lovely family run pub with home cooked victuals. Beer was kept excellently. Landlord prided himself on his cellarship.

Two friends and I stayed here for a Saturday after climbing Scafell Pike. It’s is a beautiful location and there is a large car park about a 3/4 minute walk away from the pub. The room was lovely and well kept with a large television and amenities for hot chocolates, teas and biscuits etc. The evening food was reasonably priced and so were the drinks, even having a nice fruity cider on tap! The following morning breakfast provided for free was amazing with a large selection of cereals, coffees, toast, and then a decent full English breakfast. The staff were extremely friendly and approachable and made our stay very enjoyable. 5 stars would definitely recommend a stay here if visiting the Lake District. Especially considering the value for money.

We had a lovely lunch here yesterday, sitting in the beer garden. The beers are great and the fish goujon and the hunters chicken baguettes with chips and coleslaw were delicious at such a reasonable price too.

Stayed for one night. Never again!

I ordered chicken roast dinner, it was excellent. With 2 chicken breasts, 5 roasties and mash plus brocoli, carrots and red cabbage with a Yorkshire pudding. Also with lovely tasty gravy Also ordered was Gammon, came with chips, 2 eggs, peas and grilled tomato. We'll presented and tasty. We had been told to stay away from the pub but after a visit for a drink we decided to make our own mind up. We are glad we did I would recommend to everyone. Staff very pleasant and helpful

Great pub for dog people and nice food

The room was beautiful the bed was so comfy and the food was first class. We also have a rottie who was pampered and treated as a guest. He had sausages for brekky. Thank you for everything. Adore your attention to detail.

Pleasant stay ! Great hosts, a magnificent view, a good traditional breakfast, space to park. it's also good to be able to eat in the evening on the spot too (and it was really good). I have nothing to say except that I will return with great pleasure! Thanks again for everything !

Amazing staff that were friendly and up for a chat. Helpful to get BT Sport on the TV to watch the Liverpool match.

Sat outside on the first day and had such amazing sandwiches ate here a couple of times at night as well, it is always the same, good Beer and really good food, the staff and managers are always ready to have a friendly chat and are very helpful, clean and welcoming with lots of old charm.

12th September 2022 5.15pm Nice looking Pub from the outside hence the one star. The Barman was really rude. We asked if they were serving food, he said rudely 5.30. We started to look at the menus that were on the table and he slammed down a chalk board that was on the bar and said ' this is what we are serving' . In the meantime a family with 4 adults and children came in and he sent them away as he said he had no room for them!!! We finished our drinks and left. The Barman never looked up or said a word.!!!

To the grumpy manager behind the bar, friendliness & politeness costs nothing. I spent an afternoon in there a month ago but due to the hostile way I was treated this evening, when asking if food was being served or football on, I will not be returning.

After taking the time to speak to the very limited staff The Red Lion has I cannot praise them enough. Top marks from me

Best meals we had in hawkshead and the cheapest

Visited many times over the last 8 years but unfortunately this time wasn't a pleasant experience. Geordie Landlord was miserable and unfriendly, staff looked scruffy in cycling shorts and gym vest. Dining area floor was covered in food despite it being 5pm, the time they start serving food. Sunday dinner wasn't as described on the menu, but the beef was lovely thanks chef. No mustard, no mint sauce, no lime cordial?! Coop over the road. King prawn starter were not 'king' prawns and were not pan seared, more like put in a microwave with a blob of garlic butter. Extremely disappointed. The original night we had booked prior when we arrived we were told they weren't serving food due to no chef, I had left my mobile number at the time of booking?!. Luckily the Queens head accommodated us and very nice it was. Come on Red Lion shape up please.

We stayed with friends last weekend and had a fantastic stay. Food was delicious and reasonably priced and although they were short of staff, you wouldn't know, as those that were there were always friendly and attentive. Can't fault them.

Half of our party served food, then 40 minutes later (over an hour after ordering) the other half was served after plates had been cleared! Terrible roast dinner with pale "roast" potatoes that have never seen an oven. Staff completely useless. Plenty of great places to eat in Hawkshead, avoid like the plague!

The food was absolutely worth it. The beef was melt in the mouth and the gravy amazing. Only downer was the menu is not up to date so we were hoping to have a turkey roast but they don't do it. So maybe cross it off if too expensive to reprint. Also website says they don't open until 5. Maybe someone could take a look and update it. But that said, we would definitely go again.

It's a nice pub and the food was OK. They are short staffed unfortunately, so quite a few things on the menu not available but what we had was nice.

Poor food and very tired decor. Stayed overnight and bedroom was a bit scruffy.

I stayed for one busy night on a very very hot Sunday with my wife. We loved our stay, the bar, busy, had a great menu and great service on such a hot busy period. The meal was great. We'll be back to try the week day menu too. Our en-suite room had all you needed and was just the job. Thank you to all who made it so... for those that wish to comment on decor. Give these good people time.....refurbishments take time, expense and loss of trade. Walk a mile in a mans shoes prior to comment! Thanks to all staff: chef's who fed us, Neil and Vicky [I hope I've got your names correct] and the lovely staff member who we met on arrival. Keep going.....you're all doing fine. KielderSteve.
