It’s nostalgic, ok for a beer, food is very limited in terms of choice but large portions, the microwave is busy. I’ve not been in the rooms so I couldn’t honestly say but from the pics it looks classic. A dog pooing Calendar behind the bar is not my vibe to look at whilst slurping my pint and ordering a pie, but whatever floats your boat I suppose… if you’re into that then crack on 👀. Toilets should come with a health warning so be careful in there!!! You’ll see when you go in…. If is wet (more than likely) the pub floor is like an icing rink so again watch your step, it can get dicey. Staff seem half pleasant, depends really, hit and miss I’d say, can be nice but can seem vexed at times if it’s busy, which to be fair it can get that way as there’s not much else going on if you’re not up for a walk down the road. Given by the choice of decor (dog poo calendar) I’d say there’s a certain type of humour, not sure what but I’m sure there is. Staff / managers / owners in here have always been ‘out there’ so to speak. They don’t need to try, walkers will always, I guess, walk in… good service is not required or in the job spec. Vintage and again, nostalgic… Don’t get me wrong, I love a bar with character and this does have that and I will be hypocritical and return, this I have no doubt… there’s little else… Good spot though

This really is a cracking bar, rustic, traditional, no frills with a roaring fire. When we visited last October my only feedback was around the dogs wandering around every table scavenging for food. This visit we decided not to have any crisps therefore hoping to enjoy our drinks. All was going well, the dogs generally keeping their distance, until I went to the toilet, then one dog decided to jump on my seat next to my husband. It’s a great place, we love visiting, I would just really prefer not being mithered by dogs. Will we return, absolutely.

Lovely pub perfect for the end of day food and beer after a walk up Stickle Ghyll and Elterwater a bit earlier. Very popular with walkers and locals. Excellent selection on tap and great food at very reasonable prices. Fish and chips top drawer, as was the chicken curry and the haggis. Good size meals for all. Can get very busy so hit and miss if you get a table, but well worth it if you do.

ODGH was recommended by a good friend. I stayed with a friend mid week for 3 nights. It was excellent. What I’d call a proper walkers hotel/pub. Two friendly bars and a very comfortable lounge. A warm welcome with simple but excellent food. The room was really lovely with the best views. We walked up to Rossett Pike and thoroughly enjoyed it. A challenging walk in the rain but also got some sunshine. I couldn’t have been happier in a 5 star hotel in the Bahamas. Well done team ODGH 🥰❤️🥰

This is easy to miss and on a beautiful summer's day that would be a shame. We didn't stay here so can't comment or rate the hotel side of the business. We stopped here for some food and drink after a visit to Blea Tarn and the surrounding fells. The food offering is very basic but the portions were generous and it was very tasty. There is a good selection of ales and the Climbers Bar is very rustic and 'olde world'. A word of caution... There is a National Trust car park next to the pub. Pay for your parking or expect to get a penalty notice. There were at least 20 cars that took the chance and paid the price. The location will speak for itself when you get there... This is picture box Lakeland and makes the effort to get there very much worth it. Definitely a good place to refresh on a hot summer's day

Bit of a mixed review. We stayed here last night, after walking the 25km Keswick to Langdale section of the Cumbria way. We are not pro-hikers and we were aiming to get to the Hotel at 7pm, as we thought the kitchen would probably shut at 8pm or 9pm. The hike took us longer than expected (walking with our kids), and even though we practically ran the last kilometre we arrived at 8:05pm. We asked if we could still get any food and the chef brusquely told us the kitchen shut at 8pm, but there were bar snacks (crisps). I honestly nearly cried!! We were all exhausted and starving. There are no shops nearby and we didn’t have a car. I know we were late but a bit of compassion would have gone a long way. I wasn’t expecting the whole menu, given that we were late but perhaps some chips or an offer of a sandwich? Genuinely I’m the kind of person who tends to leave 5 star reviews. But this ruined the stay for me. In its favour, the location is amazing, the rooms were fine, the breakfast was good and the staff were on the whole friendly and helpful. The bar man was really good to the kids, giving them flapjack on the house. But for me, the total lack of empathy was pretty unforgivable. Response to management reply: Just to say that we absolutely were trying to ring ahead, but we had zero reception on the hills. I agree and understand that the kitchen staff should only work until the end of their shift. However, I would respectfully suggest that some sort of back up cold food service (e.g. sandwiches) could be put in place by management for this type of situation. I’m sure the reception team or the barman could be trained to provide this. It really would have made the world of difference to us. If you are running a hotel in the middle of a city, there’s less need for this, but I think it’s pretty essential hospitality for a walkers hotel in the middle of the Lake District with no comms or shops nearby. I think it would have been less awkward for the chef too, if he had a decent alternative to be able to point us at. I understand he was tired and at the end of his shift, so I don’t blame him for being abrupt. It could so easily have been a great experience, with just a little bit of flexibility and I would have been so grateful for it. Please consider making a change.

Have been coming to ODG hikers bar for many years. In the past there was a roaring fire, great food and friendly staff. Sadly the bar felt that it had lost some of its atmosphere and character. It may be April but it was cold - sadly no fire and it was cold in the bar. A couple of staff were friendly but others less so. Food cooked but only just. Pale chips, soggy batter and meal was tepid. Have to say, mushy peas were very good. Staff let a customer’s cat sit on the table and sit/walk on the bar. Not sure anybody would be very pleased if my dog did the same. Another customer review commented that this bar has changed and had an odd atmosphere - I agree. Maybe it’s us, the customers who have changed, but a roaring fire and friendly staff go a long way towards a good warm welcome. Please don’t be complacent just because customers are staying locally and you are in a fab location.

Our initial visit this time didn’t start off well, a dog belonging to a local was prowling the bar looking for food, it was friendly enough however I want to be able to enjoy my crisps in peace. Once it left our visit was far more enjoyable. Fully appreciate that the staff are not responsible for owners dogs, however they can have a ‘polite’ word as I suspect that ‘tourists’ bring in the most income. Just returned home after a superb week at The Old Dungeon Ghyll. Nestled in The Langdale Valley, the hotel itself is perfectly located and brimming with character. The room was great, spacious, very clean and tidy, and the bed so so comfortable after a day on the fells. Oh and the views ,,,,, there are no words big enough to adequately describe it but it is truly jaw-dropping. The staff were without exception, friendly, courteous , helpful and hard working . I’ve worked in hospitality and I know how hard it is but these guys maintain a welcoming vibe in what is a very busy hotel . There is a patrons-only bar but The Climber’s Bar next door is the real heart of the hotel . Every night it’s crammed with guests and passing visitors only too happy to share hiking tips and tales of their adventures . Well kept refreshing beer, and food that’s just what you need after a hard days hiking ,,,, good value, tasty and served piping hot within 10-15 minutes of ordering. I don’t want to single anyone out but Mark the barman exudes what this place is about , welcoming and happy to chat across the bar, it’s plain to see he clearly loves his job despite the often frantic pace. Also the lady ( sorry I didn’t get your name) who serves food and runs reception ,,, now there’s a fine example of staying cool and professional under pressure. Oh and the chef to whom we chatted one night in the lounge after a particularly busy service ,,,, I’d say 50 covers in an hour at least. You are a star ! The girls and guys on breakfast service - you were all great , all of you . ODG thank you,,, we will definitely be back . Cheers - Nick & Debbi.

All welcome to fuel the days walking. We used the climbers bar which was perfect for pint and food on the tables outside. Good portions were large and good quality. Setting is fabulous with views all around. Bear in mind it’s incredibly isolated so don’t be too critical of any shortages. The isolation is the attraction. One barman clearly hasn’t been to charm school but I want a good pint not a hug. One of the classic climber pubs that was perfect for what we wanted.

All the properties this far up the valley take their water from the hillside and during the recent hot spell all the water supplies dried up. Nice walkers bar, great to nip in and have a pint after a walk. Great warm welcome from the staff and a lovely roaring fire to sit by whilst enjoying a pint. Dogs welcomed to which is great for those with them.

This pub is a no frills pub and it’s fabulous! Having done a lot of ski touring it reminds me of a mountain hut. After a day of exercise in the fells people slowly arrive shaking off waterproofs on their way in! A hearty home cooked menu with options for vegetarians. We visited on a number of occasions and one morning when we were waiting for things to dry out and the pub was shut we asked at the hotel if there was any chance we could order a coffee. 10 mins later not only did we get coffee but a plate of flapjacks too!

I've visited Great Langdale campsite twice for 2 separate weeks in the past 9 months and I have spent every evening in this delightful friendly climbers bar. I was travelling solo both times and felt like I made a family from locals and staff. The jamming sessions that frequently occur between talented local musicians are a delight to any music fan.

Our family was “greeted” by the least friendly bar man imaginable (think a cross between Lurch and Uncle Fester), then waited 45 minutes (whilst locals went inside maskless to fetch their own drinks) for a round of 4 drinks and a couple of sandwiches, before being charged £45 for the pleasure. Contempt for outsiders was obvious from the moment we arrived - awful experience.

We arrived to be shouted at by the harassed woman behind the bar “Table service only”. No good afternoon or can I help you? We watched as other customers received exactly the same greeting. Why not at least put up a sign outside explaining the system, rather than berate the customers? It wasn’t particularly busy but it took 15 minutes to get a drink (no bitters were available). The same woman then insisted we could not run a tab and had to pay for our drinks and food orders separately - I have never encountered this anywhere before. It took a further 20 minutes to get a menu as “we need to print them out”. Perish the thought that customers might actually want to be fed! Food was okay although chips arrived 10 minutes after sandwiches. Our table was sticky and covered in graffiti. I can honestly say it was the worst experience I have ever had in a pub. I’ve never posted a review before but the staff here need a lesson in customer service. Hope the hotel that’s attached to the bar is better!
