Poppi Red in South Lakeland

An absolutely perfect place to rest and re-energise, with wonderful hospitality from Leon. Our food portions were plentiful and nourishing and drinks were refreshing and a fair price. Accommodation was just what we needed; all the essentials needed to recuperate. Very dog friendly and welcoming.

Highly recommended. The Indian Style Nachos are a neat twist on a standard starter. Both the lamb and the fish mains were excellent. We finished by sharing the cheese board. Yummy.

Dropped in very late one September evening not expecting to even get served. We were welcomed and had a delicious, warming lamb stew. Very well presented food. Good beer and cakes (perhaps best not eaten together). We were not rushed out, staff were very friendly. A little more expensive than pub grub but well worth it. Definitely recommend.

Went in table for 3. We were seated, given the menus then ignored whilst staff ate cake behind the counter. After ten minutes we left. Tried to spend £70 but they didn't want it. Avoid.

We had planned to visit another establishment in the village, but when we went they said they had “run out of food” which seemed odd. We were turned away and only 6.20. It turned out to be a good thing because we really enjoyed this place. We shared a goat’s cheese starter and had the lamb casserole and the chicken kiev. All super tasty. We finished by sharing the cheese board, fab - but enhanced by the Chilean Malbec. Full bodied and superb.

Came here on Wednesday 18th Sept. Had chicken and parmesan ravioli with grated truffle on. SERIOUSLY quality food!! The service was incredible too. The guy who served me made me feel so relaxed and, quite frankly, was the best service and atmosphere I reckon I've had. I'm going to travel to Hawkshead again and this place has made the choice easy lol . Quality all-round

The lady who served us was quite miserable and rude. Could do with putting a smile on her face. After all, it wasn't busy. Surely they should be glad of the passing trade.

£3.95 for a coffee is steep but to receive a molten hot cup of frothy milk is a joke. No coffee taste to it. Hate leaving negative reviews but high price and very low quality coffee I would definitely look elsewhere for a hot drink

Came as part of the wedding party and enjoyed a full English on Sunday morning. Absolutely brilliant and the staff are lovely and so attentive. The you for making this weekend extra special for the happy couple

A disappointment for us unfortunately. I ordered the lamb spring roll/parcel off the light bites. The lamb inside was horrible, gristly, poor quality, mostly fatty and grey in colour. It was overpriced for what it was. Was almost £10 for a "starter" size portion. We got Fries as a side dish, they were very nice. Partner had lemon and spinach tortellini, was average. To be fair to the head waiter he apologised and offered me something else to try. He didn't charge us for it too which was good of them. Service was friendly. I sent my latte back because it was half milk foam. It was lovely when it came back. The quality just wasn't there for us for the price. Maybe just a bad day for us as I saw others eating pizza on other tables which looked lovely.

We had dinner here on an extremely busy Sat evening. We requested a table at the back as we have a large dog and they accommodated us without problem. Our waiter was a young lad called Leon, extremely polite and welcoming, chatty and knew his stuff about recommending from the menu. We went for the ham hock and pickled pineapple pizza with a few sides to share! Absolutely stunning pizza, would highly recommend! The cost of the meal and drinks we felt was very reasonable, the staff and atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Overall we had a very pleasant experience and would definitely return again. Hopefully soon

Lovely place that serves tasty fresh food. Went with the family and the kids really enjoyed their pizzas. I had the beef followed by the cheese board which was fantastic. I recommend it if you want a fancy meal out as a treat.

Mains of beef brisket and cod were good, but the bread starter a huge disappointment. Plain cold white sliced and 1 and a half baguette slices for a fiver. 6 quid for a side of potatoes. Overpriced for the quantity. Also, they play loud music, albeit good American rock tunes, which made it hard to hear across the table.

Visited on an early Sunday evening in August and, although we had reserved a table, this didn't seem necessary as they were able to accommodate walk-ins. The service was very attentive giving you the right amount of time to make your choice from the menu and then checking everything was okay soon after serving the meals. The portion size was good and the food tasted great.

Lovely sunny day in Hawkshead. Fresh bread for the sandwiches. Good coffee. Fresh cakes. 😋 all good.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but we had take away pizza and some coffees too. It was both very nice and good prices too. The staff were very friendly and happy to help.

We visited for the first time in years - all five of us. The staff were very welcoming and helpful despite the pressure of business. The food was excellent and service first rate. Local information was shared when required. Thank you for a great place to dine and take casual refreshment for three whole days.

Awful food. Cheap products used (bog standard white bread and cheese for a ham hock cheese sandwich, bread not even buttered- for £10!) Same with the ceasar salad, poor quality ingredients. Don't recommend. Rude staff when we went to pay

What a hidden little Gem!! Just returned home from a few nights stay in Hawkshead. We had breakfast here and it was absolutely gorgeous. We also had tea and that was amazing, fresh food, beautifully cooked. Not a large menu but a good choice. The staff were friendly and professional. The prices of the meals and drinks were fair and good value for money. We would definitely eat here again.

Came here today and have to say I wasn’t overly impressed my husband and I both ordered the hamhock and mature cheese sandwiches with fries and my daughter had a margarita pizza. The sandwiches did not have the correct cheese in it was Red Leicester not mature cheddar but the onion marmalade on them was lovely they absolutely rip you off with the drinks the first bottle of water arrived open and already used which is rather starange when it’s supposed to be a branded bottle we then received another bottle of water which had also already been opened which leads me to believe they are refilling them with tap water especially as the bottle we received was wet on the outside and it wasn’t from condensation my daughter also wasn’t overly impressed with her pizza her words were I can make better myself so overall not a fantastic experience it cost £52 for two sandwiches with a handful of fries a pizza a open bottle of water a glass of coke and a glass of orange cordial safe to say we won’t be back

Visited this evening as felt the need for a meal out. Poppy Red did not disappoint. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was quality! We search for a restaurant that cooks good food instead of fast food these days and found it here tonight. It was spot on and delicious. We will return, highly recommended.

We booked a table on line and then amended the day - very easy to do. The service was very good and friendly. We started with delicious olives and fresh bread. We both chose the pork loin for our main. This was so tasty and my favourite meal of our holiday. My partner enjoyed a local ale and I had a very pleasant rose. The decor was very pretty and I enjoyed the playlist so much I asked for title! Thoroughly recommend you don't book PoppiRed for your last dinner, like we did. You will want to go again!

It’s a nice environment, good decor and the food was ok. We felt it was overpriced and a bit of a tourist trap. We had pizzas and a goats cheese / salami sandwich, and they were ok, but nothing particularly exciting. Certainly had better elsewhere. But it’s priced at the fancier end of the scale, and the food didn’t live up to that.

Well we have been a few times as we are local and every time it’s been nice until tonight , so we had a party of 7 , starters and mains were ordered and I will say the food is beautiful, well as long as you have eaten by 9pm and you don’t want a desert as the chefs leave before the table was even asked if we wanted desert , what a bad ending to the evening , cake isn’t dessert , really bad service , we would of had 4 desserts and coffee and maybe another drink but we came over to the pub , we would of had that all there if we could of had a dessert , really really bad customer service , not a nice ending to our meal

Very overpriced and underwhelming.

Had a lovely dinner at this quirky little restaurant. We are vegetarian and there was plenty of interesting choices on the menu. Had all 3 courses and each of them were lovely, well presented and very tasteful. Service was excellent and really can’t fault anything. Can highly recommend.

What a lovely place! From the moment we entered to when we left it was a first class experience. Staff were very warm and welcoming, the menu was very good with one or two vegetarian/vegan options. My wife, who is vegan, had the Margarita and I had the chicken pesto pizza and both were delicious. They say you eat with your eyes first and the chicken pizza looked delicious.

Brilliant wee spot. We went for dinner and took our dog. The food was beautiful, wine was well paired and we even had room for dessert. The best meal we’ve had in Hawkshead 100%.

Bit disappointed as we're we're expected probably too much. It's OK but place needs a bit if a refresh. Menus we're old and dirty, plastic dried flowers?, things all a bit old and dusty?, food was OK but under seasoned,lacking g in flavour and slightly rushed. Never mind , hopefully better next time?

Not great unfortunately… mid afternoon on a bank holiday Monday and run out of most beers on tap only had an IPA also wife ordered cider and again ran out of 1st and 2nd choice … food not great and was disappointed with the prices charged for the food delivered ….. will swerve next time in Hawkshead .

Absolute value for money. Staff were so polite and helpful. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Food was fantastic especially the breakfast. Lovely location. I prefer to review on what I'm getting for my money. This is how hospitality should be done. Great find.

Did have English breakfast- sausage tastes great with perfectly cooked poached-egg. My wife had egg Royale with salmon on it - sauce is great 😊.

Shocking prices. 1 pint of local beer, 1/2 lime & soda. A staggering £9.55. I should of questioned it at the time but was distracted. It was only 5 minutes later when it dawned on me. Nice pint but scandalous prices.

Yesterday we called for breakfast again. The food is always great quality, presented well. The staff are helpful and friendly.

Just in before 3pm but staff happy to serve our late lunch. Lovely food, beer and friendly staff. Well worth a visit. Dog friendly too.

Lovely cafe in the centre of Hawkshead. Can recommend home made soup, which was cream of cauliflower and ham hock sandwich. Will definitely be returning.

Nipped in here for a quick drink while staying locally. The staff were so friendly and the food smelled so good that we ended up ordering a pizza to share even though we had recently eaten haha.

We had dinner here whilst on holiday. We loved the decor and atmosphere inside. Staff were attentive and really nice and the food was delicious and great value and a nice unique menu. Would highly recommend. Hope to visit again when back in lake district.

Such a welcoming little gem in the heart of Hawkshead. The staff are wonderful and very friendly. The service is first class. The venue is cozy. The food is fresh locally sourced, homemade and delicious. Welcomes well behaved four legged friends too. Superb visit.

Absolutely abysmal from start to finish. While sitting having a drink in Kitchen we popped over to book a table for the evening. Arrived at 7:30 to be asked to wait in the doorway as they were having issues with the till, card reader and no free tables. Not a bother, these things happen to everyone. After a little while staff suggested we may like a seat while waiting and directed us over to some high tables and stools. The wait wasn't long before we were shown to our seats. Hilariously the table was by the window with one of the seats being in a bench with cushions and the other a normal chair which resulted in me being around 2ft higher than my husband. This did keep us entertained every time I sat up but not what you want when you're out for a meal together. Food and drinks orders taken, the husband opted for a pint and myself a diet coke. Most likely the best part of the meal. Food, I'd ordered a margarita pizza with the broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes added. The husband went for beef shin chilli. We also opted for some fries to share. Oh my god this was the absolute worst food we've had in a long time. Pizza, the base was clearly a bought base, maybe from the local Co-op. Hard, tasteless and dry as sand. The mozzarella was fine, but some wasn't even melted yet. Mixed with a dry, hard base you wonder how on earth that happened. The pizza sauce was okay, very much tasted like a tube of tomato puree than anything with any seasoning. Beef shin. The worst of the two, rice was overcooked and undercooked, maybe separate batches mixed together. The rice could have done with draining properly too as this created a very watery meal. Sadly this wasn't sticky rice as expected but only specified as rice on the menu so we can't complain about that. The beef shin was actually very tasty, but a very small portion. The tortillas added were actually a cut up wraps which had been toasted. Burnt in places and floppy in others. We also had to ask twice when the fries ordered would arrive as food had arrived around 10 minutes ago. Seems like they'd been forgotten. No apology for the delay. The waitress was asked about the 'tortillas' and replied 'i don't know what they are actually' this interaction was when the plates were collected with more than half the meal remaining because we just couldn't try eating anymore. A couple to the left of us, also sitting on the bench and chair situation asked to order drinks, the manager said he'd be over soon, the bloke then went to the bar and asked again. Order taken, pint, wine and a glass of water. They asked to order food at the same time and told someone else would be over soon to take it. When their drinks arrived the water was missed, the poor lass asked 3 times for water before it arrived. Another couple over from us were finding the situation hilarious too, they'd also ordered a pizza and many times just laughed at it. This is clearly a place that is kept alive by the tourists who have no idea just how bad the food will be. Such a shame!

Such a good establishment, lovely food and fantastic rooms

Lovely and helpful staff serving unusual food and cakes tried the Broccoli, soya and ginger soup lovely and thick great for a wet and cold day. Dogs are allowed spoke to a lab enjoying warmth from the open kitchen. Recommend Not a big place inside but have outside area with tables.

Everyone apart from one of our group was disappointed here. The price was expensive for what we had. We also found the waiter quite intrusive to the extend that nobody wanted dessert in order to leave. Quite surprised by other reviews.

We attempted to go in one autumn afternoon for drinks and potentially for dinner to be told that " you can't come in until after 5 but you can sit outside for coffee and cake". Not at all welcoming, we went elsewhere. Just a weird experience.

Fantastic hotel in lovely Hawkshead

Firstly I would like to comment on the behaviour on the service ! My wife Trisha was approached with vulgar language by someone who is currently working there called max , he was rude and impatient to her . I would come to Popeye red again but I do not feel so safe around him as I did feel quite offended on his comments he made on my physical appearance which I will leave my wife to discuss! It’s a no for me ! Never coming here again !

Excellent friendly service. We had a delightful mushroom and garlic soup with foccacia and butter with a pot of tea. Highly recommended!

Amazing food, great portions, friendly staff. Slightly pricey but not ridiculous. Highly recommend the Beef Ribs and the Citrus drizzle cake.

Pizza not so good. Pizza base is yellow coloured and rock hard. They say the pizza base is yellow because they put turmeric in the dough to make it healthy. LOL

I remember when Poppi Red was just a gift shop, then a sort of tea-room and gift shop, so thought I'd give the new incarnation of Italian restaurant a try. As per previous reviews, which I wish I'd read in advance, the pizza here is awful. The bread was very heavy, and the toppings were undercooked, making the whole thing a chore to eat. The side of salt & pepper fries was incredibly meagre for £5.45.

Had a pot of tea for 2 £7, in terrible cups that were stained, the tea was was so weak it was dreadful, we didn't drink it! This place has changed hands, used to be a lovely tea shop

This restaurant is dubbed as an Italian Roman style pizza restaurant. They have a beautiful Gozney pizza oven plastered all over their website indicating they mean business. Unfortunately this is not even close to what you get. The pizzas are flat, unleavened and the addition of turmeric and paprika and an unnecessary amount of sugar makes for what can only be described as the worst attempt at pizza making we have ever had and we dabble in a 45p Asda pizza from time to time. The toppings are dry, overcooked and tasteless, and the cheese is the cheapest form of grated pizza cheese making for the most overpriced inedible and disappointing dinner experience we have had. The other mains we ordered aside from pizza were all over cooked, dry and visibly microwaved. (Tandoori cod) and (seafood laksa). It was clear we weren’t the first people to feel this way as the waiter never even came close enough to ask us how our meal was or if we were happy. Very disappointing.

Stayed here 2 weeks ago left my coat have rang several times a day everyday emailed possibly 10 times absolutely no response cannot get communication with the property to return my coat why do they not reply terrible after service do not leave anything here it will not be returned very disappointed and let down never stayed in property where no one contacts you ever

If you're lucky you'll be served by Josh Hartnets Twin 😂. For breakfast the Full English and Eggs Royal are without fault. And for any other time the pizza, crayfish salad and mixed fish laksa are great!

Beautiful food, interior, service & ambience. Nice that people bothered to dress up too. It was totally wrecked by a selfish dog owner bringing their dog which howled for the entire night! I would have been embarrassed and removed it - but then I wouldn't have bought it to a restaurant anyway. Why not leave it home in the first place? What a shame - the owner needs to change the policy on dogs in the restaurant in the evenings. Everyone & I mean everyone was complaining!

I had a bad latte here a year ago and thought I would try again as I had 30 minutes to waste. When I got to the open front door at 0845 I was told “residents only until 0930”. So I sat in the bench outside to read, and then five minutes later a local van drew up and the driver went in and came back out with a coffee. I’m sure the cakes are delicious though if you can get them.

Possibly the best Full English I can remember eating. Perfect hash browns and poached egg. Loved the spiral Cumberland sausage. Fantastic!

Had a lovely evening sitting out on the terrace, with my nephew and his fiancé. Pizza was delicious a lovely crisp base and tasty toppings. A very nice restaurant quality Seafood Laska Tried Garlic fried Broccoli and it was a revelation 😋. Very friendly service, the girls there are so nice. Dog friendly as well. If in the area certainly try it, you won’t be disappointed

Staff were friendly and had a nice atmosphere. Pizzas were decent but a bit pricey, best place we’ve eaten in Hawkshead.

Came for dinner and no problem when they said it was full. We asked if we could sit outside with takeaway as others were doing it. The staff were dismissive and so unfriendly. We almost stayed despite it but £17 for a pizza each is excessive for bad service and feeling unwelcome.

This was our 2nd time to call in for lunch. Even though the staff were clearly busy with lots of folk arriving they were friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious and well prepared. The ambiance was perfect with music playing in the background. Will definitely be calling in on our next visit.
