What a lovely restaurant. The staff are superb, they really made the night special for us. The food is very nice with a couple of good vegan options. Lentil bourguignon very nice!

Nipped in here for a quick drink while staying locally. The staff were so friendly and the food smelled so good that we ended up ordering a pizza to share even though we had recently eaten haha.

Such an amazing staff! Feel very welcome and comfortable. Big shout to person puring a drink and answering all out questions about food. Also young gentelmen who brought us a food had amazing knowledge about everything on menu. Service is 10/10 food is amazing!! Best spot to go!

We had dinner here whilst on holiday. We loved the decor and atmosphere inside. Staff were attentive and really nice and the food was delicious and great value and a nice unique menu. Would highly recommend. Hope to visit again when back in lake district.

Such a welcoming little gem in the heart of Hawkshead. The staff are wonderful and very friendly. The service is first class. The venue is cozy. The food is fresh locally sourced, homemade and delicious. Welcomes well behaved four legged friends too. Superb visit.

Absolutely abysmal from start to finish. While sitting having a drink in Kitchen we popped over to book a table for the evening. Arrived at 7:30 to be asked to wait in the doorway as they were having issues with the till, card reader and no free tables. Not a bother, these things happen to everyone. After a little while staff suggested we may like a seat while waiting and directed us over to some high tables and stools. The wait wasn't long before we were shown to our seats. Hilariously the table was by the window with one of the seats being in a bench with cushions and the other a normal chair which resulted in me being around 2ft higher than my husband. This did keep us entertained every time I sat up but not what you want when you're out for a meal together. Food and drinks orders taken, the husband opted for a pint and myself a diet coke. Most likely the best part of the meal. Food, I'd ordered a margarita pizza with the broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes added. The husband went for beef shin chilli. We also opted for some fries to share. Oh my god this was the absolute worst food we've had in a long time. Pizza, the base was clearly a bought base, maybe from the local Co-op. Hard, tasteless and dry as sand. The mozzarella was fine, but some wasn't even melted yet. Mixed with a dry, hard base you wonder how on earth that happened. The pizza sauce was okay, very much tasted like a tube of tomato puree than anything with any seasoning. Beef shin. The worst of the two, rice was overcooked and undercooked, maybe separate batches mixed together. The rice could have done with draining properly too as this created a very watery meal. Sadly this wasn't sticky rice as expected but only specified as rice on the menu so we can't complain about that. The beef shin was actually very tasty, but a very small portion. The tortillas added were actually a cut up wraps which had been toasted. Burnt in places and floppy in others. We also had to ask twice when the fries ordered would arrive as food had arrived around 10 minutes ago. Seems like they'd been forgotten. No apology for the delay. The waitress was asked about the 'tortillas' and replied 'i don't know what they are actually' this interaction was when the plates were collected with more than half the meal remaining because we just couldn't try eating anymore. A couple to the left of us, also sitting on the bench and chair situation asked to order drinks, the manager said he'd be over soon, the bloke then went to the bar and asked again. Order taken, pint, wine and a glass of water. They asked to order food at the same time and told someone else would be over soon to take it. When their drinks arrived the water was missed, the poor lass asked 3 times for water before it arrived. Another couple over from us were finding the situation hilarious too, they'd also ordered a pizza and many times just laughed at it. This is clearly a place that is kept alive by the tourists who have no idea just how bad the food will be. Such a shame!

Such a good establishment, lovely food and fantastic rooms

Lovely and helpful staff serving unusual food and cakes tried the Broccoli, soya and ginger soup lovely and thick great for a wet and cold day. Dogs are allowed spoke to a lab enjoying warmth from the open kitchen. Recommend Not a big place inside but have outside area with tables.

Everyone apart from one of our group was disappointed here. The price was expensive for what we had. We also found the waiter quite intrusive to the extend that nobody wanted dessert in order to leave. Quite surprised by other reviews.

Food was absolutely amazing. Had salmon and spinach pizza with a side of roasted beetroot and tenderstem broccoli. The man serving us was really friendly and we had a few jokes with him. The decor is very stylish throughout. Lovely place to have breakfast, lunch or dinner in

Fantastic food, ordered the ham hock sandwich and was blown away by the flavours. Great service, dogs allowed,very helpful staff and clean and tidy toilets. Would definitely recommend.

We attempted to go in one autumn afternoon for drinks and potentially for dinner to be told that " you can't come in until after 5 but you can sit outside for coffee and cake". Not at all welcoming, we went elsewhere. Just a weird experience.

Fantastic hotel in lovely Hawkshead

Firstly I would like to comment on the behaviour on the service ! My wife Trisha was approached with vulgar language by someone who is currently working there called max , he was rude and impatient to her . I would come to Popeye red again but I do not feel so safe around him as I did feel quite offended on his comments he made on my physical appearance which I will leave my wife to discuss! It’s a no for me ! Never coming here again !

Excellent friendly service. We had a delightful mushroom and garlic soup with foccacia and butter with a pot of tea. Highly recommended!

Amazing food, great portions, friendly staff. Slightly pricey but not ridiculous. Highly recommend the Beef Ribs and the Citrus drizzle cake.

Pizza not so good. Pizza base is yellow coloured and rock hard. They say the pizza base is yellow because they put turmeric in the dough to make it healthy. LOL

I remember when Poppi Red was just a gift shop, then a sort of tea-room and gift shop, so thought I'd give the new incarnation of Italian restaurant a try. As per previous reviews, which I wish I'd read in advance, the pizza here is awful. The bread was very heavy, and the toppings were undercooked, making the whole thing a chore to eat. The side of salt & pepper fries was incredibly meagre for £5.45.

Lovely front of house chap and amazing food.

Had a pot of tea for 2 £7, in terrible cups that were stained, the tea was was so weak it was dreadful, we didn't drink it! This place has changed hands, used to be a lovely tea shop

This restaurant is dubbed as an Italian Roman style pizza restaurant. They have a beautiful Gozney pizza oven plastered all over their website indicating they mean business. Unfortunately this is not even close to what you get. The pizzas are flat, unleavened and the addition of turmeric and paprika and an unnecessary amount of sugar makes for what can only be described as the worst attempt at pizza making we have ever had and we dabble in a 45p Asda pizza from time to time. The toppings are dry, overcooked and tasteless, and the cheese is the cheapest form of grated pizza cheese making for the most overpriced inedible and disappointing dinner experience we have had. The other mains we ordered aside from pizza were all over cooked, dry and visibly microwaved. (Tandoori cod) and (seafood laksa). It was clear we weren’t the first people to feel this way as the waiter never even came close enough to ask us how our meal was or if we were happy. Very disappointing.

Stayed here 2 weeks ago left my coat have rang several times a day everyday emailed possibly 10 times absolutely no response cannot get communication with the property to return my coat why do they not reply terrible after service do not leave anything here it will not be returned very disappointed and let down never stayed in property where no one contacts you ever

If you're lucky you'll be served by Josh Hartnets Twin 😂. For breakfast the Full English and Eggs Royal are without fault. And for any other time the pizza, crayfish salad and mixed fish laksa are great!

Beautiful food, interior, service & ambience. Nice that people bothered to dress up too. It was totally wrecked by a selfish dog owner bringing their dog which howled for the entire night! I would have been embarrassed and removed it - but then I wouldn't have bought it to a restaurant anyway. Why not leave it home in the first place? What a shame - the owner needs to change the policy on dogs in the restaurant in the evenings. Everyone & I mean everyone was complaining!

I had a bad latte here a year ago and thought I would try again as I had 30 minutes to waste. When I got to the open front door at 0845 I was told “residents only until 0930”. So I sat in the bench outside to read, and then five minutes later a local van drew up and the driver went in and came back out with a coffee. I’m sure the cakes are delicious though if you can get them.

Possibly the best Full English I can remember eating. Perfect hash browns and poached egg. Loved the spiral Cumberland sausage. Fantastic!

Had a lovely evening sitting out on the terrace, with my nephew and his fiancé. Pizza was delicious a lovely crisp base and tasty toppings. A very nice restaurant quality Seafood Laska Tried Garlic fried Broccoli and it was a revelation 😋. Very friendly service, the girls there are so nice. Dog friendly as well. If in the area certainly try it, you won’t be disappointed

Staff were friendly and had a nice atmosphere. Pizzas were decent but a bit pricey, best place we’ve eaten in Hawkshead.

Came for dinner and no problem when they said it was full. We asked if we could sit outside with takeaway as others were doing it. The staff were dismissive and so unfriendly. We almost stayed despite it but £17 for a pizza each is excessive for bad service and feeling unwelcome.

This was our 2nd time to call in for lunch. Even though the staff were clearly busy with lots of folk arriving they were friendly and accommodating. The food was delicious and well prepared. The ambiance was perfect with music playing in the background. Will definitely be calling in on our next visit.

Really nice people. The sun, pub booked us in and were pleasantly surprised. The place had been busy all day, but were full of beans about their food and drink.. the Mrs had a Laksa and I had a meaty pizza, the beer was very quaffable.

Only had a couple of 1/2 pints of soda, one with a splash of lime. £5.70 !!!!!! Don't think we will be back!!!

Poppi Red offers Gluten Free pizza options on the menu so we booked a few days ahead then emailed twice and called many times to check they had GF. No answers. Guess what, no GF pizza, only GF option offered was anything served with bread - so soup. Not good. Non GF food was just OK. Please.....answer the phone and emails!

We had a delicious breakfast today at Poppi Red. The food was extremely good and the service was both friendly and efficient. The Bistro setting is beautiful decorated throughout. Our dog was welcomed in too. Would definitely return.

The staff at Poppi Red are amazing. On a busy Easter weekend they found the time to chat and get to know customers even remembering which bottle of wine we purchased the night before. Had an amazing meal, I had the pork belly and my husband enjoyed the game casserole, we both enjoyed the prawn bon bons for starters.

My wife and I have just had a very enjoyable evening in PopiRed. The food was delicious and the portion size just right. The serving staff were very pleasant and attentive. Overall, there was a very good, friendly atmosphere in the restaurant and all other guests seemed to be enjoying themselves too. A must visit if you are in Hawkshead.

It was quite good. We ordered vegetarian pizza, cheese and the crust was very delicious. The toppings were quite interesting as well. The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant, with good lighting. The service was quite good.

Called in for a light lunch and we were very happy we had! Excellent staff made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. I had the hot beef sandwich with caramelised onions and my wife had ham and brie sandwich, both were delicious.

Absolute rip off £6 for a bottle of beer...£11 for a sandwich...£28 for a bottle of beer a half of lager..soup and a sandwich...avoid.

An amazing little bistro restaurant. Beautiful decor inside with one of the best food we have had in Lake District. I will highly recommend this stop to anyone who is in the area.

Absolutely loved having dinner here with this amazing young lady with the coolest heart shaped glasses and her friend were so friendly that we decided to come back for our last meal of our holiday, havibg had had our first meal of the week at poppi red. The crab and crayfish pizza was our favourite bit the pork belly and take were also delicious! Keep up the great food and great spirits, love the glasses btw x

Very slow service and not much flair. The food is nourishing but not very tasty. The serving staff were very friendly. I couldn’t recommend as I left feeling poorer in my pocket but with nothing to remember.

Well what a lovely suprise, staff were extremely polite pleasant and acomdating. Food was great. Well presented, thought out, fresh produce. Was a delight to experience. Fantastic location in the lakes and on the square.

The staff were very good considering the difficult situation they were in with being understaffed. There was a rather large wait, but they gave a very sincere apology with 25% off, so that was forgivable, however, the food was not really that good. There were small puddles of grease in the pizzas and it could have been better. I will be back in the future however as I understand things are difficult with new management at the moment.

Excellent food & friendly service

Food was great no complaints. However my Mum and I ordered Frobishers apple juice. However what we actually got was concentrated apple juice, likely out of a carton. And in the fridge could be seen a large jug of apple juice. The fact that we payed £3.50 for Frobishers apple juice and it was some unbranded cheap apple juice is totally inexcusable. The picture shows the apple juice. For those who don’t know Frobishers apple juice is cloudy

On entering the cafe were told to sit down and they would serve us at the table. A party of ladies who had reserved a table but came in 10 minutes after us were served first! Chose a slice of lemon & blueberry cake ,( which was very dry) and a cheese scone which was accompanied by a slice of cheese and red onion marmalade. It wasn't until after we paid the bill and looked at the receipt and noted the cake was G.F/D.F. which explains why it was so dry but there was no indication of this on the display cabinet. Also we were charged extra for the cheese and marmalade which we assumed were included! Check your bill before leaving!

I ordered the British plate which is similar to a ploughman's lunch. My partner ordered soup and my child ordered pizza. My parter and daughters food came out about 10 min before mine but the two waitresses on shift apologised and I was also offered a free drink and my daughter got a free ice cream. Also as we were leaving they offered us two cheese scones which was well above what I expected. The food was really nice but the service was absolutely top class and I would recommend anybody to try this place

Not a bad little place, but the food was admittedly pretty awful with the kids even saying they only ate the pizza because they were so hungry but didn't like it. Factor in the price, and really not a place to go.

Slow service and very expensive. Slow to clean tables for queuing customers too.

Had full English breakfast here, which was the best one we had while on Holiday in the Lakes. The owners are really friendly and its has a lovely atmosphere.

Had an amazing evening meal here with friends after finding everywhere else in the area to not be serving food! The girl with the heart glasses who was looking after us was so helpful and recommended wonderful meals to us which we all thoroughly enjoyed! (The beef ragu was delicious!!). She also mentioned the desserts were new and we had to try them and we were so glad we did. Would absolutely recommend eating here if you are in the area!

We have used this cafe numerous times in the past. On a quiet afternoon the service was slow, we had latte and scones, they were tasty enough but!! When we received the bill we were shocked £4 for a coffee, £3.50 for a scone then they had the cheek to charge £.50 for butter and £.50 for jam. RIP OFF!!

Got sent this way by a local who said my doppelganger worked there. Amazing staff, so sweet and friendly, especially the staff member with heart glasses and tattoos, they were super friendly and attentive (very cool people) xx

Ate here for an evening meal. The food is excellently presented, fantastic quality and tasted delicious, some of the best food we have had for a long time! Offers more of a variety of food than elsewhere in the village.
