What a find! Beautiful hotel, excellent service, staff are absolutely lovely. Only one problem: there are a couple of steps up into the hotel restaurant which I struggled with, so be aware of that. But the staff were so helpful and opened up a dining room with no step. The hotel is in a beautiful setting, plenty of resident parking, Windermere is very close by, altogether the perfect place.

A great public bar annexed to the hotel - where better place to finish your hike and try some Cumbrian brewed cask ales? Marvel at the shear rock face in the gents toilets in what was WW’s local. A marked improvement in the weather means most customers are taking advantage of the large beer garden to the side 👍🏻

This is the second time my wife and I have ate at the Badger Bar while on holiday in the Lake District. Both times the food was exquisite and the restaurant honestly deserves a Michelin star. The Pork Belly with Dauphinoise Potatoes and seasonal veg was perfect in every way. My wife had the Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli which was creamy, cheesy, and delicious. Both excellent dishes, and the food is always hot and fresh.

I love and adore everything this place has to offer, from the food to the atmosphere and everything in between has been nothing short of incredible! The location is also fantastic! Straight across Rydal’s lake and you can cross the bridge for a fantastic hike to go the caves or the top of the mountains. Their leek and potato soup is out of this world!

All of the staff were always very friendly and happy to help, the food was excellent. The Thai coconut sweet potato curry is a must have, absolutely delicious! When the time on our reservation ran out we were offered a very comfortable seat in the beautiful lounge. We sat having some drinks until we saw that the badgers arrived. My Canadian (badger obsessed) girlfriend got to see her first ever badger and did it after a really lovely evening at the Badger Bar. I would recommend this establishment to anybody visiting the Lake District. Next time we come it will likely be staying in one of their rooms

Went there for dinner and drinks with the hopes of seeing a badger. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We started in the beer garden, which was absolutely adorable, spacious, and a beautiful location. Perfect afternoon in the sun. As it got dark, we moved indoors, and enjoyed a very cute, cosy, and old-fashioned style pub. The food was excellent, and they served the best nachos I think I’ve ever had. We loved the badger theme of the indoors area, and I was very fortunate to spot a badger shortly after sunset! The bar’s “badgercam”, which you can keep an eye on using the bar’s wifi while at your table, shows a live stream of their badger feeding area - an amazing feature. Overall, an amazing experience, and I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone.

Were here after the Covid lockdown restrictions were relaxed. As the weather was beautiful the restaurant seemed to be busy all afternoon with hungry and thirsty hikers. The service was very quick and pleasant. The beer selection was good. We ordered the classic burger which was a very generous thick patty, the Piripiri chicken skewers were also very tasty. I was impressed that with the recent re-opening that there weren't any service failures. They were prepared. The outdoor seating area is several wooden picnic tables and when its sunny its brilliant with the view of the hills across the road. Even though its next to the road I don't recall it being a problem for noise or odours. There were plenty of dogs (hikers love 'em) but spacing was such that they didn't bother each other. The spacing was also good for Covid precautions.Left happy and full.

No te decepcionará.

Had lunch here today not impressed at all, 2 sandwiches, 2 chips/ wedges?? (Not sure what they were) 2 pints cost £32!! Don't mind at all paying for fresh quality food but this was far from it. Very dry crumbly bread, definitely had been frozen. No flavour what so ever to both sandwiches, tortilla crisp things ♀️ not sure what they were very soggy and just tasted of oil!! I ordered bacon and brie and cranberry sauce sandwich. No one came to ask if everything was OK with our food, I had to ask for some cranberry sauce that they had forgot to add to my sandwich. Also I didn't add any salt, vinegar, mayo or sauce to my lunch as they were in bottles on every table and not sachets!! A definate no, no during this pandemic. When paying these prices they really need to up their game on the quality of food and service, there's plenty of eateries in ambleside to choose from and next time we will choose another.Such a shame as the pub has a lovely old traditional, cosy feel.I'm expecting a management response in defence due to covid as many other responses.Been out and eaten many times at other eateries since the new norm and standards have been maintained.

We spent a week staying in Rydal and visited The Badger Bar twice to eat and twice to just have a drink on the way home after a day's walking.During our stay in Rydal, the government' Covid-19 hospitality rules changed, so when we went for a meal on the last evening of our holiday, it had changed from earlier that week. The bar had amended their procedures and we had a lovely meal, feeling very comfortable until unfortunately, part way through the meal we were made to feel quite uncomfortable by a family who seemed to think the covid rules didn't apply to them. The team at the bar dealt with the situation perfectly dispite the difficult challenges that businesses like this must now be facing. A lovely, welcoming and charming pub. When we visit Rydal again, we'll defo head for The Badger bar. Thank you to the team for helping us feel comfortable and safe this evening.

Entered the bar ordered drinks and just enquired if there was any possibility of a table , knowing it was Sunday and limited space , we weren’t hopeful but thought we would ask . We'd done Grasmere and it was touch and go as to whether we would then do Rydal as it was right in the middle of the heatwave and there was just no air. So glad we did though and fortunately the Badger Bar is only a few minutes from the car park. I can only describe my approach to the pint of Staropramen in front of me as like John Mills' character in Carlsberg's 'Ice Cold In Alex' advert. My review is entirely for the beer garden, I can see that the food has poor ratings. I must say that I do find it harsh to see one and two circle reviews in these testing times. Pubs are finding their way at the moment and it was hot and very busy when we called, it must be a nightmare for the staff. It was great to see the badger feeding area and I remember there's a webcam, hopefully that's still the case.

We have been visiting this pub every year since I can remember and have really fond memories, but I would really hesitate to go back on this last experience. We had booked a table for lunch as the weather looked dodgy and were told that they could only do 12.30 rather than the 1pm that we wanted. When we arrived (more like 12.45) they were virtually empty inside so must either have had cancellations or were operating a very extreme distancing policy. The service was good in terms of being prompt and attentive at the table but this is the only positive thing about our experience. We both had sandwiches for lunch which were very basic and over priced (no eat out scheme being operated). My daughter had tomato on her sandwich which we discovered had gone bad after she had eaten some I pointed this out to two members of staff, but neither seemed to take it very seriously or offer anything, we were just told that they were tell the kitchen!Overall, really disappointing and actually quite sad to have this experience somewhere that we have loved in the past.

Negatives - very very overpriced, food was basic and cheap tasting, the service was very slow & we waited 20 minutes after our food being served just to be given cutlery. We stayed two nights, the room was very clean but we were put in a twin bedroom when we highlighted it’s our anniversary stay. The toilet in the bathroom was making a dripping sound so the door needed to be shut at all times in order to fall asleep and not to be distracted. The Cleaning lady was lovely, The property manager also friendly. Badger pub needs experienced staff. Bar / restaurant - Poor service. One of the bartenders Very rude, some waitresses literally didn’t know what they were doing. At breakfast we were stood in the waiting area being completely disregarded by the male waiter who could see us but decided to keep us in the lobby until we went to the kitchen and asked somebody to be seated. We were served cooked (pre-ordered) breakfast without toast. Next day again (pre ordered) mixed up breakfast. As hotel guests, we booked a table for Sunday lunch as to support the business and upon arrival after morning walks we were told the menu is basically all gone so we drove for 2 hours to find somewhere else to be served some decent pub lunch/dinner. We were staying locally and were keen to find somewhere within walking distance for an evening meal. Because we had a dog with us we were only allowed in the bar area. It was a cold evening and the beautiful open fire wasnt lighting. The bar area was ok but the restaurant area looked much nicer. Staff were friendly, the menu was quite limited and fine for some grub after a day walking in the fresh air but quite pricey for what we got. We accept the area is quite expensive in comparision to other areas - i guess we just felt a little disappointed that the area could have been a bit cosier. The food was standard burgers and the likes and mid range prices for pub grub. Quality was fine but nothing special. This place could be super cosy and welcoming for walkers - just felt it was a little commercial and lacking warmth but the staff were very helpful. Would probably seek somewhere else when we return to the area.

The bar is part of yet seperate from The hotel. A choice of cask ales always available. The meals can be eaten in the bar or in the restaurant and are excellent. Home cooked and good value from a varied menu. The pies are especially tasty.

Further to a previous post, I found the Fish Finger sandwich to have a highly satisfactory bread to fish ratio. Hoorah!!

My sister and I stopped at this hotel on a very wet drive up to Ambleside for a break and it turned out to be a good choice. Not normally a beer drinker I decided to test the local beer and was very impressed. I could have got the taste for future drinks! My sister had a bowl of soup and declared it excellent. It was a cosy and cheerful place with a blazing fire, I do love that and the staff were very pleasant and friendly.

We visited Badger Bar for lunch on walk around Rydal Water, as we have done in the past, as I’m sure we’ll do again. The Badger Bar is a quaint, ‘proper pub’, still retaining the traditional Lakeland experience. The service was great, the food was hot and came promptly, the only negative is that you only get 2 fish fingers on the ‘posh fish finger sandwich’, and you really need 3 for the price. Especially as the bread is very ‘bready’, and so the bread to fish ginger ratio is not great. In fact, all 3 of us left most of our bread and ended up only eating the fish, which means it wasn’t great value for money. Just an extra sliver of fish would have made all the difference

Visited here on the 30th December to have a meal in the Badgers Bar. The waitress who greeted us was a delight, so pleasant and helpful. The food was good pub food all in all a very pleasant experience, so much so we decided to visit again on New Years Eve to have a bar snack after a walk.

We went to the Badger Bar for an evening meal/bar food at the end of December A friendly young girl welcomed us and served us our meals She was great The food came quickly and was good The following day after a walk, we returned for morning coffee and were served by an abrupt, verging on rude, barman If he had served us the evening before we most certainly would have left without eating

Been here several times for food and have actually stayed a few times, always fantastic... but tonight we had the pie, chicken and bacon, and man was it good, served with what can only be the best chips in Cumbria.. if I did have any criticism it’s that the music didn’t suit the environment.

Had dinner here on Christmas Eve, the food was very nice and portion sizes were good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My son (who is very fussy) said it was the best fish and chips he had ever had. Would definitely visit again, in fact called in for a couple of drinks Christmas Day lunchtime. Fires roaring, dogs welcome. What more could you ask for. Delightful.

Had a great Christmas in Badger bar in Lake District. Beautiful big room, comfortable big bad, amazing bathroom, everything was lovely. We enjoyed watching badger webcam every night, afte tv 12am badger and foxes coming to eat. I find it amazing that this hotel feed the animals, supporting them. It is very kind of them and for this reason I wish this hotel all the best. Had fish for Christmas lunch and it was delicious. Hope I will be back. Had a very romantic time with my husband.

In a world of gastro-pubs this place is a refreshing and welcome change. Friendly bar staff, proper pub meals, dogs allowed, roaring fire and good beer. What winter evenings are made for. Oh yes, and badgers!

The fish finger sandwich was very good indeed and was served as described. The bacon and brie also looked good. However the "home roasted Cumbrian ham" was square pre-formed ham out of a packet and was absolutely tasteless. It should have been with mustard mayo but it only came with plain mayo which was fine with me but that is not the point. Unfortunately I did not order the food and only realised the discrepancy afterwards when stating to my friends that I thought the ham roll was very poor. Note to the Badger bar - don't serve poor food, its best to remove that choice from the menu.

Enjoyed our meal. Huge portions, friendly service, great value. Only negative mains delivered while still eating starters and some of the crockery although lovely did not lend itself to the food eg too small, weird shapes etc Would return :)

Real local feel to the bar, friendly staff, lovely home cooked food & good choice. And of course there’s the badgers. Fed each night although no guarantee they’ll turn up, but the time we were there they did.

Having endured!! strenuous walking in glorious bank holiday weather and paddled in Rydal Water, we were in need of liquid refreshment. Almost like a mirage in the desert, Badger Bar was there to serve our needs. Four pints in a sun drenched beer garden. Didn’t eat but lots around us were and food looked good. Another visit is a definite.

This brilliant walkers bar lives up to expectations as always. This really isn’t a place for expensive jeans and handbags, it’s a place for walking boots, backpacks and wet dogs on a wet Sunday in September. We’d booked the nice clean table in the window for 2.30pm and walked in on time and drenched having been waking all morning.
