Nice simple bar and two cosy wood-panelled dining rooms, all with wood stoves and one with a great leather sofa snug area. Really nice spot for a great Sunday lunch. A storm forecast saw our mountain bike jolly in Grizedale cancelled so a strong recommendation from YHA led our group of 4 here. Five lovely hours, great lunch and a few beers. Staff friendly and nothing too much trouble. Shout out to Sam! ❤️

Lovely Sunday lunch with the family. A good selection of meat options. The vegetarian roast was second to none. They catered well for our small children too. We have been back for Sunday lunch every time we go to the lakes for as we have yet to find a roast that matches it!

We were lured in by the badger feeding, but missed it as we were there during the day haha. We came in after exploring the caves and were welcomed and served. The food looked good although we did not eat ourselves, large external garden and the toilets were like caves themselves. Highly recommend the dark stout on cask.

We have just returned from a lovely weekend stay at the badger bar. I came with my parents and my husband and 4mo old. The rooms we stayed in (cottages- otter and bluebell) were spacious, clean and comfortable! The food we had was absolutely top notch and you definitely get what you pay for, huge portions!! Great beers enjoyed in the beers garden. Breakfast was also very good with everything being served quickly and with a smile. The staff here have been wonderful with helping us deal with the ramp to get in and out with the pram and my dad needing a wheelchair with a broken leg - even ensuring he got a sausage sandwich in the morning when he didn’t make it for breakfast. To all the lovely chatty girls who waited on us and served us you are superstars. Thank you for making our stay so welcoming.

Fawlty Towers! Impersonal service. Stayed as a family, in 2 separate rooms, Rydal Suite and Ulswater twin room in 28th and 29th December 2022 as a special family break. We were informed by the owner on Christmas Eve, there was scaffolding still up at the window of Rydal suite partially obscuring the view from the balcony. The reason being the ‘builders had over run in their works’. As we were meeting friends in the Lakes it was rather too late for us to change our accomodation. We were offered £40 off in food vouchers for each day of our stay. The booking price was £440 for 2 nights for our room, plus £330 for the children’s room. I explained beforehand that we were likely to be eating out at least once and subsequently, prior to our visit £80 per night was taken off our room rate. On arriving, the fascia board above our room was new, unpainted and there was no way the work was anywhere near finished. The owner had just tried to deflect the blame in our opinion. With the scaffolding, the Rydal Suite was dark, the view from the window and balcony was obscured and the handle on the inside hand been removed from the balcony windows so we couldn’t open the doors to let air in and for our whole stay the windows were dripping in condensation. The windows in Rydal suite have no ‘inner double glazing’ like they have in the dining room downstairs, hence the room is noisy. The curtains didn’t close properly and I needed to hold them together with a hair ‘bulldog clip’ at night. The traffic noise in Rydal room from the A591 at night felt like we were in the centre of the road. It went on til close to midnight. On the 2 occasions the bath was used in the Rydal suite it leaked and we mopped up with towels. We could hear, everything going on in the room next door when in the bathroom, so taking a bath was not a relaxing experience. On the first afternoon, we went for a walk and came back to find the window seat in Ullswater room where our sons were staying was wet. It was leaking in from the roof. Their room smelled musty and damp from the moment we arrived. I took photos of the leak and went to the reception area and bar area to find a member of staff to be told pleasantly ‘ it’s not the first time it’s leaked and won’t be the last, until the roof is fixed!’ They kindly put a plastic bucket on the window seat with a cloth in it so our children didn’t have to listen to the drip, drip, drip! They offered us a round of drinks ( consisting of a pot of tea, and 2 apple juices) and pudding off the meal on the first evening- which consisted of 2 ice creams and a cheesecake. The children’s room cost £330 for 2 nights. These TWO rooms, Rydal Suite and Ullswater room should never have been available to book. The damp & musty smell in Ulswater room means the leak has been going on for a considerable period of time and probably all filled with mould and Aspergillus fungus. The complacent attitude of the owner and staff, by allowing these room to be available to book, not considering the customer first sums up the overall attitude. There was no personal apology from the owner during our stay, when I am sure a visit to our table in the breakfast room would have been gladly received by us. Aside from the fact my lamb was lukewarm on the second evening I’d lost the will to complain anymore, as I don’t take a mini break and precious family time to complain. My realistic expectations are that the place should be as described and look like the website pictures illustrate. Potential customers, give this place a large swerve. I’d love to add the photographs I took, but I’m not sure how to as I’ve never experienced anything so poor and had to leave a poor review, but hopefully the description and rating is advice enough. The Holt Family.

Went there for dinner and drinks with the hopes of seeing a badger. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We started in the beer garden, which was absolutely adorable, spacious, and a beautiful location. Perfect afternoon in the sun. As it got dark, we moved indoors, and enjoyed a very cute, cosy, and old-fashioned style pub. The food was excellent, and they served the best nachos I think I’ve ever had. We loved the badger theme of the indoors area, and I was very fortunate to spot a badger shortly after sunset! The bar’s “badgercam”, which you can keep an eye on using the bar’s wifi while at your table, shows a live stream of their badger feeding area - an amazing feature. Overall, an amazing experience, and I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone.

Were here after the Covid lockdown restrictions were relaxed. As the weather was beautiful the restaurant seemed to be busy all afternoon with hungry and thirsty hikers. The service was very quick and pleasant. The beer selection was good. We ordered the classic burger which was a very generous thick patty, the Piripiri chicken skewers were also very tasty. I was impressed that with the recent re-opening that there weren't any service failures. They were prepared. The outdoor seating area is several wooden picnic tables and when its sunny its brilliant with the view of the hills across the road. Even though its next to the road I don't recall it being a problem for noise or odours. There were plenty of dogs (hikers love 'em) but spacing was such that they didn't bother each other. The spacing was also good for Covid precautions.Left happy and full.

No te decepcionará.

Very dry crumbly bread, definitely had been frozen. No flavour what so ever to both sandwiches, tortilla crisp things ♀️ not sure what they were very soggy and just tasted of oil!! I ordered bacon and brie and cranberry sauce sandwich. No one came to ask if everything was OK with our food, I had to ask for some cranberry sauce that they had forgot to add to my sandwich. Also I didn't add any salt, vinegar, mayo or sauce to my lunch as they were in bottles on every table and not sachets!! A definate no, no during this pandemic. When paying these prices they really need to up their game on the quality of food and service, there's plenty of eateries in ambleside to choose from and next time we will choose another.Such a shame as the pub has a lovely old traditional, cosy feel.I'm expecting a management response in defence due to covid as many other responses.Been out and eaten many times at other eateries since the new norm and standards have been maintained.

We spent a week staying in Rydal and visited The Badger Bar twice to eat and twice to just have a drink on the way home after a day's walking.During our stay in Rydal, the government' Covid-19 hospitality rules changed, so when we went for a meal on the last evening of our holiday, it had changed from earlier that week. The bar had amended their procedures and we had a lovely meal, feeling very comfortable until unfortunately, part way through the meal we were made to feel quite uncomfortable by a family who seemed to think the covid rules didn't apply to them. The team at the bar dealt with the situation perfectly dispite the difficult challenges that businesses like this must now be facing. A lovely, welcoming and charming pub. When we visit Rydal again, we'll defo head for The Badger bar. Thank you to the team for helping us feel comfortable and safe this evening.

we stumbled upon this place ,and were attracted by sign of watching badgers .Despite fact we never dined here the staff were extremely obliging and allowed us to park and watch a resident clan of badgers come for nightly scraps .It was the highlight of our holiday thank you so much

Walked from Ambleside on a drizzly Sunday morning. Had a great Sunday roast, all cooked fresh. Friendly atmosphere, highly recommend. Book a table to avoid disappointment as the Lake District is so busy right now with everyone on staycation.

First time visit to the badger bar , and we were looking forward to it !! Entered the bar ordered drinks and just enquired if there was any possibility of a table , knowing it was Sunday and limited space , we weren’t hopeful but thought we would ask . The middle aged gentleman behind the bar who had served our drinks , replied with a very unfriendly and abrupt “no tables “!! We were both disappointed with this reaction . Having taken a seat outside in the rain we had a nice drink . Hopefully this was a one off .

We had to try and book a table via email, not by phone, last minute. However they did reply and fitted us in. Old traditional Inn, dark wood panelling in the bar restaurant. We had the chicken pie and Cumberland sausage. Both very tasty. Prices average for the area. Service was very friendly and efficient. We had our own booth so felt Covid secure. Ale was good. Would go again. Own parking available.

It’s nostalgic, ok for a beer, food is very limited in terms of choice but large portions, the microwave is busy. I’ve not been in the rooms so I couldn’t honestly say but from the pics it looks classic. A dog pooing Calendar behind the bar is not my vibe to look at whilst slurping my pint and ordering a pie, but whatever floats your boat I suppose… if you’re into that then crack on 👀. Toilets should come with a health warning so be careful in there!!! You’ll see when you go in…. If is wet (more than likely) the pub floor is like an icing rink so again watch your step, it can get dicey. Staff seem half pleasant, depends really, hit and miss I’d say, can be nice but can seem vexed at times if it’s busy, which to be fair it can get that way as there’s not much else going on if you’re not up for a walk down the road. Given by the choice of decor (dog poo calendar) I’d say there’s a certain type of humour, not sure what but I’m sure there is. Staff / managers / owners in here have always been ‘out there’ so to speak. They don’t need to try, walkers will always, I guess, walk in… good service is not required or in the job spec. Vintage and again, nostalgic… Don’t get me wrong, I love a bar with character and this does have that and I will be hypocritical and return, this I have no doubt… there’s little else… Good spot though

Very small, not very clean, awful beer and wine. Staff were friendly otherwise nothing good about this pub I'm afraid.

Called in on a very wet Saturday afternoon for a spot of lunch and to dry out after a very wet walk with our Springer Nice friendly welcome and some nice beers on offer A small menu but the food we opted for was superb Two pasta dishes, pumpkin and clam were both devoured. Would definitely recommend.
