The food was good, but it was a shame the service didn't match! Lacklustre would be a fair description. I would strongly recommend not booking a meal on a Sunday.

Ordered a pulled jackfruit baguette and was given pulled pork. Took it down to the bar and was advised they had checked and it was jackfruit. Got my partner who is vegetarian to try it and he also confirmed it was real pork (you could see the skin and fat). Took it down again and was then advised they would ask the chef (not sure who they asked the first time). Finally, they agreed to make a new one but by this time the rest of my group had finished eating and I didn't have much of an appetite as I'd just eaten meat for the first time in 24 years and felt a bit ill. Good job I'm not allergic. Update: I want to express my sincere appreciation for the manager's prompt and compassionate response. They reached out personally, offered a heartfelt apology, and took full responsibility for the mistake. They have reassured me that they have taken steps to prevent this from happening again and I look forward to giving The Mill another try.

Poor service, left guessing where to order food. Menu available online doesn't represent the menu in reality. One word responses from questions with staff darting around with a table full of people confused on where to order. Only one menu available for the table. All at time that wasn't very busy. Pet friendly but medium sized dogs seems to get a few stares from staff that didn't seem too friendly of it's presence. It could have just been a one off, who knows. Won't be coming back. One positive is the building is beautiful, there is a restored mill inside which is pretty cool. Some historic literature knocking around which was interesting whilst we waited for nothing.

We booked a table for 7.30. The website gives the impression that The Mill is quite classy and upmarket. The food was decent: battered haddock and chips- hot and crispy; lamb shank- tender and tasty. Service was friendly but not the most efficient. The pub was very busy and staff were stretched. Glass of red wine ordered as food came, didn’t arrive until lamb was nearly finished. We sat near the spiral staircase and the noise from the upstairs bar was considerable; drunk people staggered up and down the stairs and bounced off the walls on their way in and out. A fun night out if that’s your thing, but definitely not classy.

Excellent place for a meal. You would be forgiven for thinking the place was small on entry but heading to the left of the bar, opens up to plenty more seating to choose from and even a lovely rooftop terrace. Tasty diverse menu, including a varied choice of plant based dishes from starters to desserts, which was refreshing to see. Mrs Cheddarwasp and I tucked into a fantastic 3 courses and washed it down with a nice bottle of red. Thanks to the bar man for having the patience whilst we scanned the selection for a vegan wine. This is definitely worth a visit and we hope to be back soon. Cheers!!

I booked our works christmas party for 30 people for 21st December. From my initial point of contact with Jade the whole process was seamless. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals on the evening which included the most delicious pies and the best brownies we had ever tasted. Jade was on hand to answer all of my queries before hand and nothing ever seemed like a trouble to her. I called or e mailed a few times prior to our visit and she was always helpful, friendly and extremely professional. The selection of drinks on offer was plentiful and reasonably priced. The bar was clean, well staffed and the service was quick. Jade is such an asset to your organisation with her professional and hands on aporoach we felt extremely well looked after and we will certainly e mail her to re book our staff Christmas party for next year. And also this grand pub SHOULD DEFFO BE in the CAMRA GBG FOR ITS EXCELLENT RANGE OF WELL KEPT HAND PUMPED ALES Today, the majority of the real ales are from Lancaster Brewery. Arrived to our booking 10 minutes early, to be shown to our table in a room of bickering and complaining. Our order was taken with no information of any wait times or problems the restaurant were having. Tables were talking between each other on how long they had already been waiting ( approx 1 hour ) for food with no indication from staff as to why, a table then left. More people arrived with no info on issues so sat and waited to be served that never happened so they left. Our drinks were brought upstairs but sat on a table waiting to be brought to us for 20 minutes. Starters arrived after 30 minutes, the soup was bland and tasteless which required a hefty amount out salt and pepper and the chicken pâté had a piece of plastic in it, there was no check back from staff so the food was left to be eventually taken away. Whilst waiting the 45 minutes for our main more tables had left and were also having troubles. The mains arrived were edible but we weren’t asked for any more drinks we just wanted to leave at this point so we tried to attract the attention of a waiter for sometime to get the bill. After getting their attention and waiting 25 minutes there was still no bill so we headed to the bar downstairs to try and quickly pay and leave. We travel to the lakes a few times a year and always try to eat here this is the first time we’ve had a terrible experience and has ruined the idea of returning in the future. No check backs by staff, food that was inedible, terrible atmosphere, no repeat drinks order and worst of all no information from staff as to why the problems were occurring. Most recently we took my father-in-law and his wife to celebrate his 70th birthday. Gemma, the manager of the Lancaster breweries was so helpful in creating a wonderful night for him. She is a hostess extraordinaire. Not only did Papa get the “best pie of his life” but we had a really nice dining experience as well. Booked a Sunday Lunch for 6 people at 2pm in the restaurant upstairs. Place was buzzing downstairs, food looked good but unfortunately we didn't get to experience it. After being seated at our table by Barry, we waited over 15 mins and ended up getting our own drinks at the bar. It became quite apparent that Barry was on his own and hats off to him, he kept his composure. We could have been advised when we first arrived that they were short-staffed and that there would be a significant delay in getting our food. Instead after waiting 45 mins with no attendance at our table, even though we asked numerous times for our order to be taken, we decided that we would not be getting any food anytime soon and left. People were still sat at tables with no food that had been there before us. Very disappointed. Communication is key. It was Bank holiday, obviously going to be busy, staff accordingly, if staff have let you down, call customers and advise, make it more manageable for yourselves and make the customers experience a more memorable one. Shame but Barry well done on keeping your cool.

We travelled from Lancaster to celebrate my sons birthday. We were recommended The Mill. We sat outside in pleasant area. We decided to have some food and sad to say it wasn't the best. I wondered if there was a shortage of kitchen staff. The food was overcooked, which is better than undercooked, but tainted the taste and enjoyment. I had the chicken and mayo flatbread which had been overcooked. Chicken was dry. Grandson(5) wouldn't eat his chicken goujons were the same and he wouldn't eat them. My daughter and son in law ordered burgers and they weren't too impressed either. I know lack of staff can cause these problems and the only excuse I can think of when you have good reviews.

It was very unusual to receive a pot of coffee but my husband was very pleased that he did as it was very good quality and was more than a standard cup you would usually receive. The tea was very good as well Very reasonably priced for what we got The Mill as the name suggests has an old waterwheel inside which is a great feature and it's a comfortable and very clean place to stop for food and drink. I don't often write reviews, but this place really does deserve a decent one as we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our visit there today. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The pub itself has a lot of character and would be great anytime of the year as it would very cosy in the winter, and great for sitting outdoors in the summer. We booked a table for 3 and took our dog which they were more than happy to accommodate. Great selection of beers, lovely wine even by the glass, and the food was actually the best that we have had this week having eaten out a few times already. This is proper home-made food. You can really tell that, which is rare these days. Even better is that the food tasted great and was presented really well also. I had a ribeye steak which was excellent. My fellow diners had 2 different homemade pies between them which looked awesome, and according to them they also tasted as good as they looked. If you like homemade chips you won't be disappointed either. Starters of French Onion soup and Calamari were excellent as well. Both definitely seemed to be homemade again. Credit to the chef. Highly likely we will be back as we enjoyed it all so much. Great place for a bite to eat and a few drinks, especially if you have a dog as well. Thanks to all the staff and chef there for a great dinner today.

Booked in advance a month ago for a Sunday evening meal with our dog. Turned up and the place was setup like a club with loud music on rather than somewhere to eat. No email or anything to say this before hand so would recommend an alternative place to eat if staying in Ulverston.

Booked this spot as we were under the impression that the Mill is the place for a quaint pub dinner in Ulverston - turned out to be a bit more interesting than that. Had to walk through a wannabe Calvin Harris doing his set in the bar area to get to the restaurant. It was a lovely space but the bass from the rave downstairs coming through the floorboards made for an amusing vibe. Food was a mixed bag. My steak and peppercorn pie from the specials board was top notch but my friend’s ribeye steak was sub par - overcooked and quiet a poor cut of meat. But it was okay because our waitress was one of a kind. She was very helpful in having the steak, which my friend had left most of, taken off the bill because, and I quote, “I didn’t cook it, I don’t care.” We did also appreciate her retrieving the iPad to take it to VAR and confirm that we weren’t mistaken in claiming we had asked for a medium rare steak. Other examples of the nonchalant attitude included the leisurely arrival of the ketchup (just in time for the final chip) and the care-free scoff and shrugg when we had the audacity to ask for a steak knife - it was a silly request, we know. We also felt that the spilt mayo, which spent quite some time or the floor before a customer said he couldn’t bear to look at it anymore and cleared it himself, really added to the ambience. We would all be a bit happier if we took our waitress’ approach to life. I would like to make clear, because I know we are at risk of sounding like we are criticising her, that we loved our waitress! A below average meal, and below average service was salvaged by the hilarious waitressing style. We had the most enjoyable time at the Mill - it was let down in a number of respects but was saved by our waitress!!! Do go to the Mill - not for the steak but for the waitressing staff

It was a bit of an upsetting experience. Came here with my Dad for quick drink after a walk and was thinking of booking a table for that evening for 2 to have dinner. When we arrived we were ignored by 2 staff members that walked straight by us. Then when we actively went to the bar, the lady there didn’t know how to make a drink we requested and then proceeded to be quite rude. When we asked if there was any availability for the evening instead of saying yes or no sorry it was “ it will be tight..”. From this experience it wasn’t welcoming and actually turning down potential business! Annoying to see but I wouldn’t recommend to anyone to go here.

I've eaten quite a few times in the last couple of weeks. Great food on every occasion. Service great most of the time, however particularly great service from Jade. Lovely atmosphere. Child and dog friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you are visiting Ulverston.

A lovely pub and a very sociable bar maid working on her own which is understandable given its a week day. Ordered a pint which was palatable but not enjoyable as it was at room temperature. Went for the steak and ale pie with mash and veg. Unfortunately the food was delivered with chips and not mash but the young lady quickly took the chips away to replace. The rest of the dish was anything but appetising. The pie was burnt and i couldnt cut the pastry with a knife and the veg seriously under cooked and as with the pie, I couldn't cut up the veg (I have a pic) the only right thing was the extra gravy I asked for. I have a speech restriction and didn't want to complain to the lovely young lady. After waiting a little while for my mash to arrive I decided to cut my losses and go try another eatery. I would definitely drop in again as it is a lovely pub. However, i would insist on a cold pint and avoid the food. John B.

Came in for a meal with my husband, a celebratory meal as we are newlyweds visiting the Lakes on a mini-moon, to the most shocking service we have experienced in a long while. We opted for a chicken burger and a steak and ale pie, both rather experience for the portion size. The chicken burger was burnt, tasteless and unappetising on arrival. My husband however, to his horror, ended up finding a bone or sharp piece of plastic in the pie. When informing the waitress of this (a young girl with reddish brown hair and glasses) she just shrugged this off and went on her way. Absolutely appalling behaviour towards a customer!! When letting the waitress know of this, we did not expect any compensation or free food/beverages (which is what any normal business would have offered!), as a simple apology would have sufficed. Still in shock at the absolute lack of basic customer service, even greeting, thanking or saying goodbye to your customers were all missing from this visit. Absolutely do not recommend and will definitely not be returning.

5 stars to the property and also to the staff! We stayed 5 nights in the Rydal Room. The room is large, with a small-ish four poster bed and two single beds. All the beds were very comfortable, with supportive mattresses and cozy blankets and sheets. The bathroom is modern, though the plumbing is not - it takes a couple of minutes for the hot water to flow, but that's a small inconvenience. The toiletries and towels are all high quality The inn is genuinely old-world charming - wooden everything, including the creaky floors. The breakfast is pretty good. Yoghurt and cereal, plus a cooked breakfast of choice - 6 options, and all were thoroughly satisfactory. The lunch and dinner menus are small, as should be expected in such an establishment, but everything we ordered over 4 meals (and three people = 12 different orders) was excellent. Kudos to the chefs!! Finally, the staff are rock stars who round out the experience so perfectly. Warm, friendly, and incredibly hardworking, they made our stay so comfortable, we did not want to leave. The location is pretty good - about halfway between the villages of Ambleside and Grasmere, both of which are a long (for me) walk away. Rydal Water is just across the street, good for swimming, a picnic, and walks around the lake. We loved our stay here, and will be back for sure.

After parking up and having a wander around Hawkshead, the rain started up again so we decided to take shelter here until it cleared up. Staff were great - even when there was a mix up and order didn't get made. Once sorted, we were enjoyed a delicious coffee. Lovely place to enjoy a drink or a meal.

Sat inside as it was a wet evening. Pleasant enough but it did have a lingering lavatory smell on the day we visited. I'd sit outside next time. Large TV on which was distracting from any ambience there otherwise might have been.
