The Red Lion Inn in Stratford-on-Avon

Went in on Good Friday for some drinks when staying in a nearby air bnb, booked for dinner the following night. Food, drinks, service, atmosphere - everything was amazing. The highlight for me was the hot cross bun bread and butter pudding. The welcome from the staff was lovely - in a small village pub you can often feel like an outsider but this is definitely not the case here. Have already recommended to my friends and family if they happen to be in the area & we’ll no doubt be back too.

Haven’t been to the Red Lion for a while, but thought to pop in and try it out mid week. Staff were friendly, attentive as was the landlady. Service quick as well. The food is a mix of traditional fayre and local options, with a menu that should cater for most tastes. Had the Schnitzel, which was tasty and well portioned. Desserts were really good as well. Good selection of drinks and beers as well. It’s also a very pretty venue, traditional pub with subtle modern touches. Can’t fault it really, will be going again.

Visited yesterday with my husband to meet friends for lunch. The owner was very friendly and chatted with us until our friends arrived. The portions of food were both generous and delicious. Fantastic location and will definitely visit in the summer. Thank you.

Six of us went there for a meal to celebrate a birthday. The landlady and all the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The place itself was lovely and the meal was wonderful.

Family sunday lunch to celebrate special birthday. Large group, including a few young children, arrived a little early but that was no problem, table all ready and they had even put up a few birthday decorations. Service at the bar was quick and friendly. Food arrived piping hot and huge portions of wonderful food. Waitresses all very friendly and helpful. Will def return.

Family run pub who have had it for the last 7 years having overcome a near crippling covid lockdown. Wife very welcoming and pleasant. Husband chef also very friendly. Out of town but easy to find just off main road Very good menu selection available Starters :- Squid, Brie and 2 Whitebait all very enjoyable. Mains :- Chicken curry , sausage and mash , fish and chips , gammon steak with all the trimmings No holding back on portion size and the gammon steak in particular was one of the biggest I have ever seen. Curry was sweet rather than spicy but no complaint whatsoever about the other 3 dishes. A minor quibble the little sachet packets of mayonnaise , tomato sauce etc are the devil to open. Desserts :- Creme brulee , lemon sponge and 2 icecreams , nice end to a very good meal. Good bottle of Chilean Merlot to accompany the meal plus a pint of Doddingtons. All in all we will back , easy to park , clean toilets , quite busy.

Fantastic everything from the staff at The Red Lion Inn Little Compton, well done!! 12 of us went for a family birthday lunch and the staff surprised us with wonderful decorations, but we also had brilliant service & fantastic food. This place has a rustic feel & the menu here is much larger than most village pubs, very diverse but every time we have been we have been impressed by the quality, taste & presentation of the food. BBQ Ribs especially appreciated as not found on many menus. The Fajitas too a nice surprise on a pub menu. I am fairly new to the Cotswold but speaking to people in the area they already seem to know this place is one of the good ones to seek out. Lovely garden area too when the weather warmer.

Had dinner here with family. The steak was really good, staff were very friendly, and the surroundings comfortable. Will definitely return if visiting the area in the future.

Food: The food is not just bad, but very bad. The potato chips come out brown and didn't taste good. The burger was very plain and tasteless. Service: we set in the garden and there was a horse poo on the grass and a big yellow bucket of water just left in the middle of the garden together with some builders things and no one cared to remove them and make the place a bit nicer for customers. Can't recommend and won't be back.

A great find! Just had the Sunday roast and the pan fried cod. It was big, delicious and good value. Plus a lovely old pub with pretty outside area as well as nice inside. Very helpful and friendly staff too. Thanks

We dropped in for an evening meal whilst staying at a nearby caravan site. Fabulous traditional pub, the building is full of original features and character. Warm welcome on arrival and staff were friendly and attentive throughout. Food was delicious, freshly prepared, well presented and generous portions (the mains perhaps a little too generous for us but would have probably managed it all if we hadn't also had starters). Absolutely worth visiting if you are in the area.

Travelled from Essex to have an18th Birthday lunch meal with eldest granddaughter . Table booked for 1pm The reviews here looked good , but the experience was better . The pub/restaurant is a quaint Cotswold stone building with good off street parking . It has a nice garden area with tables chairs and BBQ , Nice feature fireplace which would look nice in winter . The dining area is a good size and leads to the garden area. We had been asked to book our starters and mains in advance as we were a big part (19) not an onerous task , and it contributed to a speedy delivery of starters soon after initial drinks . The servers were two very pleasant polite young ladies , helped by the landlady . The shared nachos Im told were very nice . The stater plates were removed and soon after mains arrived . ALL the food was nice and as the reviews said , generous portions . The roasts were a delight , a good portion of nicely cooked local beef and lamb , roast potatoes jut like home , yorkshires and a selection of vegetables with Cauliflower cheese on the side , plenty of gravy . After the mains the desserts came , again all were extremely nice , my younger granddaughter said the Sticky toffee Pudding was the tastiest dessert she'd ever had , and that girl likes her desserts !! At the end of the meal , the staff kindly helped with a homemade birthday cake . The itemised bill when presented was a shock , but a good one . Really nice food which really was just like home cooked , a very good selection , similarly the desserts . The drinks were more than reasonably priced . Red Lion you excelled yourselves and thank you for a, lovely meal with very pleasant speedy service . Look forward to coming again on another occasion

As a group of 4 we ate her last night and had a fantastic meal and drinks (love Donnington Gold) it really was super and fantastic value so thank you and we will be back soon can't believe we have not been sooner as we only live around the corner. 🍺🍺

This was a clean, welcoming eatery. Plenty of parking space. Fabulous choice.... I could have chosen everything on the menu. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely delicious, piping hot, fresh and well presented. We would eat here again in a heartbeat. I wish it was our local.

Stayed for the weekend. Had a great stay, breakfast is great, also had an evening meal with the family which everyone enjoyed. Great place to stay, very comfortable, very friendly staff and locals. Beer is good too.

Best stay ever..food is amazing and so was the welcome. Rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable. Its just a really warm and comfortable atmosphere. I can't fault it. We will definitely be back.

Very warm welcome. A great country pub with a garden, and cosy inside. The landlady was very welcoming. The food was very good, especially the chips, some of the best we have had in a while. A big choice on the menu which was great. We will return as the pub garden was being updated and expanded, so should be great for outdoor eating. A good quiet location just off the A44, not too far from Chastleton House NT.

What an amazing find, stayed for 2 nights and didn't want to leave. Made very welcome by the owners, staff and locals. Instantly felt at home. The room was great, very comfortable. Breakfast and evening meals are wonderful, generous portions for a good price. Good locally sourced food which you can tell the difference with. We are planning our next trip back 😊

Lovely pub. Filling portions- no need for starters. Very high quality food, one vegan option, lots of GF that I could see. £10 for an espresso martini that they mix themselves, none of that premixed rubbish. The main beer garden is a building site now, but we got into the front beer garden which was nice enough. Staff were so friendly! Toilet was clean. No idea what rooms are like but the pub inside is decorated well.

We had a marvellous meal on the 27th December 2022 for a family Christmas Day 2 get together. The place was lovely, the staff were fantastic - nothing was too much trouble - and the food was amazing! I had the chicken and chorizo risotto - I have never had such a large portion! Truly delicious and can't wait to go back when we visit our family again...would love it as a local! Was looking for a pub lunch in the Cotswolds outside the main towns and this fitted the bill perfectly. Good village pub vibes, i.e. not squeezed out the local drinkers in favour of food customers. Food is well done pub food, not pretentious just well prepared and good value for money. The Donnington Ales Brewery beers are top notch.

I do believe I would fly to England just to have their lamb hot pot. I’m still talking about it 2 months later. Everything about this menu item spelled simplicity, yet with taste, freshness, and hearty perfection. Plus, even though a large group was scheduled, they accommodated us with a wonderful table and excellent service.

We booked for Sunday lunch at 14:30 last Sunday only to find that they had run out. To only have one toast meat on the menu on a Sunday seems very strange, no wonder they ran out. Would definitely think twice about going for Sunday...

La comida era muy buena, nos encantó. El restaurante se habría visto diferente en un día soleado y el jardín se veía muy acogedor, pero definitivamente no nos podemos quejar de la comida o la cerveza.

No puedo hablar lo suficiente sobre este lugar. Durante nuestra estancia en los Cotswolds fuimos aquí dos veces. El personal es muy amable y servicial. Bar y restaurante muy limpios, comida fantástica, porciones muy grandes a muy buen precio. No podría desear más. Sin duda volvería y se lo recomendaría a otros.

We had been in Moreton-In-Marsh mooching and I was hankering for a Sunday Lunch. On the drive home, we decided to drive through Little Compton and The Red Lion Inn was the first pub we found. Due to the current Covid 19 restrictions, we made our way into the love garden and sat under the maple tree, all the tables were well spaced. We received wonderful table service and we both had the Sunday roast lamb with all the trimmings. We were not disappointed. The lamb was amazing ... the veggies; asparagus, carrots, leeks, courgettes and onions were delicious ... and the cauliflower cheese ... wow, just wow. Totally satisfied my craving. We went all out and had a pudding too ... Rhubarb Gin Eton Mess and Sticky Toffee pudding with cream ... the perfect finish. The staff were respectful, friendly and made us feel welcome and comfortable, so thank you. Lovely pub.

I had decided that I couldn't face a four hour drive in the dark in a very small borrowed car so I found the Red Lion on trip Advisor only a couple of miles out of my way. Very much 'vaunt le detour' and a great find. The Red Lion is very much a traditional village pub (dogs not only welcome but encouraged!) with an excellent restaurant and a few very comfortable and well equipped bedrooms attached. The gravadlax and picked cucumber was first rate and the local sausage and mash was also very good. Breakfast was all prepared to order by cheerful staff.My bedroom was warm, welcoming and comfortable with high quality bedding. The bathroom had a window which I always regard as s bonus. First class Moulton Brown toiletries.I shall return!

This restaurant was mentioned in the guest book at a cottage we were staying at Tredington so we decided to give it a try. What a find, what a place!!Wonderful, just what you would expect from an old country pub, no airs & graces simply a most friendly welcome. Good, varied menu, and they cater for anyone with a food allergy. The chef came out & discussed the menu with my wife. Food was great, large portions, good quality & cooked to perfection. Our son-in-law ordered a mixed grill & didn't know whether to eat it or climb it.Deserts to die for although the selection is such that decision-making is somewhat difficult, roulade is amazing.All told an excellent experience and to be highly recommended. We will certainly revisit should we ever be in the area again.

Made very welcome for an overnight stay here followed by Sunday lunch the following day. Very comfortable room and lovely breakfast with great variety from local sources, enjoyed overlooking the garden filled with a wide variety of wild birds on feeders. Probably a mistake having lunch a few hours later as quantities are very generous. It was great though and staff made us and our party of 17 celebrating a birthday, extremely welcome.

We had a lovely meal with family just before Christmas great service food was excellent and plenty of it! Friendly atmosphere no rush nothing to much trouble.

On arrival we were shown to our table which was set with a crisp white tablecloth, sparkling wine glasses & crackers, looked super. The restaurant had a real christmas tree & log fire, giving a really nice atmosphere.Our starters were delicious, followed by turkey & all the trimmings! my fussy daughter even ate the roast potatoes which she never eats normanly! The sweets were all super scrummy! It was a perfect christmas meal. Thank you for making christmas day 2019 one to remember.

We ate here just before Christmas and were extremely disappointed with the quality of the food. The roasted vegetables were soggy and inedible and the ‘en croute’ main courses were clearly not freshly made. We asked for a wine list, but there apparently isn’t one, there were just 5 choices of wine, which is odd for a pub restaurant. The landlady didn’t charge us for the food, after we expressed our dissatisfaction. Looking at some of the previous reviews, they clearly relate to the Red Lion at LONG COMPTON, which we have eaten at recently and which incidentally is very good!

Many pubs go up and down but the Red Lion at Long Compton maintains a regularly good level of food and service.

Ownership and staff are very attentive, food is very good with a good mix of choices. Try the syrup toffee pudding!

Mi compañero tenía un bistec que era blanco y difícil de masticar. Tuve un estofado de cordero que era encantador, pero las verduras estaban empapadas y el puré sabía a "aplastar" del microondas. Todo esto y fue uno de los lugares más caros en los que comimos, hay lugares mucho mejores en la zona para comida de pub de buena calidad.

We settled on the Red Lion as being halfway between us in Birmingham and my daughter in Newbury.My daughter had stopped and eaten here before and suggested it would make a good meet up place for Sunday lunch. The menu (Autumn)had plenty of choice for 5 adults and 1 grandaughter although 3 felt it was a no brainer with a beef roast dinner on the menu! 2 of us had starters which were lovely, but we could easily have done without as a lovely complimentary basket of bread and balsamic dressing was placed on the table. the other 2 adults had sea bass nad cheese souffle....both off the specials board. Grandaughter had picked from the children's menu, again loads of choice. The only downside was running out of treacle tart, but that can be excused as it was a really busy Sunday. The icing on the cake for my granddaughter was that pub dog Bella decided to make under our table her base for a couple of hours!! Outdoor area looks lovely for another visit on a summer's day.In the mean time we might well use the Red Lion as our meet up point for the family Christmas present exchange.The staff were all really friendly and patient!!
