In the past this has been a great place for Sunday roast but sadly not any more. One of our party received a slither of pork. Another was so underwhelmed by roast options they just ate a starter. Vegetarian option butternut squash which is hardly adequate and just a plate of vegetables with no protein for £20. Someone needs a word with the chef and/or owner. Cold Yorkshire puddings and gravy the consistency of stock. Style over substance and woefully inadequate. The Bower House do no seem to respond to reviews so shows how little the opinion of their customers matter.

My partner and myself stayed in the rooms above which were beautifully decorated warm and peaceful - the evening menu didn't acommodate much in the way of vegetarian food but the host prepared a special menu for me to choose from which was a really thoughtful touch - breakfast in the morning was also delicious - highly recommended

Was really looking forward to this....a group of 12 of us celebrating our friendship. The restaurant is pleasant and inviting with some interesting decor features. Large tables and a uncramped layout. So our menu choices - Dull pork belly, undercooked and tough, should have just melted on the plate. Beef Wellington, too rare, soft as it should be, but oh so chewy and tasteless. Tenderloin should be full of meaty flavour. Beef rump was a revelation, tender and well rested. Service was varied. Yes we were a large group but getting huffs and puffs from staff is unacceptable. To cap it all we got into a meaningless altercation over orange chocolates. Our main server was very pleasant and accomodating however. Did we just catch these folks on a bad day? I don't think a return visit will occur just to answer that question.

Just been for breakfast, two adults and one child(£54) The smallest breakfast I’ve every seen for £14, two tiny thin slices of bacon a slice of undercooked black pudding, barely cooked sausage and the poached eggs tasted like they were poached in vinegar! Oh and let’s not forget the tiny pot of beans for three people to share, this was very disappointing and I feel completely ripped off! Considering they have a 10% service charge I really don’t see how they can justify this, the service certainly isn’t great, a pretentious place to say the least,

Had a two night stay at this little gem, the rooms are situated in an old listed building but are modern and spacious, the bathroom being huge with tub big enough for two, if you book direct with the hotel you get a wonderful breakfast included in room rate, we also had dinner here, small menu done perfectly and great cocktails, would I stay here again? In a heart beat. Also staff were lovely 10/10 My only suggestion would be to have a topper on bed as it was quite firm, but that’s personal preference.

Back to the Bower House last night for a friends’s birthday. It’s our favourite place for a celebration or just a scrumptious meal. We cannot leave the interior out of this as I truly think it’s one of the most attractive places to eat that I have visited and I love walking across the square and seeing the welcoming lighting and pictures on the walls. This, coupled with the warm welcome from Paul and his staff is always a great start to the evening. The food was delicious, a crab starter that was light and tasty and served with avruga , radish and avocado that gave it layers of flavour. Melt in the mouth duck with couscous that had all sorts of Mediterranean tastes in it and last but not least a blackberry soufflé that was light a a feather but packed a heavy weight flavour punch. The service was particularly good last night, although to be fair it’s always good. Whenever I see people sitting eating in the Bower House I always feel jealous that I’m not there too as I know they’re having a lovely time!

We’re staying at The Bower House for a night to escape life’s craziness!! I can’t explain how unreal this room is (we’re in the blue room) ….the value for money is amazing! A lovely, large, extremely comfortable bed in a very large room with excellent facilities and beautiful decor….then there is the bathroom….as someone who lives with a shower room on a daily basis, I have longed for a soak in a bath. The Bower House bathroom has been my absolute dream come true!!! A huge, freestanding, roll top bath and piping hot water; great water pressure meaning that the bath was full in a few minutes!! Bliss!! We are still here so I can’t comment on breakfast just yet, but I’m in heaven, the bed is like lying on a cloud that gives you just the right amount of back support…seriously, can I move in please? To say that we’re impressed is an understatement. I can’t congratulate the owners of this place more, it’s an absolute triumph, everyone who has contributed to make this room as immense as it is should be applauded!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Well what can say about The Bower House that hasn’t been said before? We arrived for lunch and both decided on the 6 course tasting menu for £45. Every course was simply delicious and had obviously taken a lot of planning as everything on the dishes were complimentary to each other. Leo ( head chef) came out to serve one of the dishes which is a lovely touch. Zac ( another of his talented team ) served another course to us. I could not recommend it highly enough and was one of the finest meals I’ve had the pleasure of eating

Whilst staying with friends on the Warwickshire/Gloucestershire borders - we were treated last night to dinner at Bower House Restaurant and Rooms in Shipston on Stour. A culinary gem. Housed in a Georgian building - the restaurant spaciously laid out over three tastefully decorated rooms - and the menu as delightful as the wine list - the food was absolutely delicious, innovative and beautifully presented - from the perfect sourdough with whipped sea salt butter - a quite sensational crab tart - I cannot wait to come back - so I can work my way through this incredible menu!

We went for Sunday lunch which I would’ve given five stars except for the final event which turned out to be a ‘sting in the tail’. We had enjoyed excellent roast beef and all the trimmings and decided to have coffee and with a bonbon to finish. The waitress was lovely and after seeing that we enjoyed the bonbon asked we might like another one. We thought a ‘nice a treat to finish’. However, upon receiving the bill we found that being charged twice for coffee and bonbon. What a disappointment and would we like to give a gratuity on top of the 10% service charge? No thank you!

What could have been. The food was extremely tasty but overall it was let down. Service was far too slow, over 45 mins from ordering to starters being served. Steak was ordered rare but had clearly been resting for too long as was only just pink in the middle. Had a 0% win rate on ordering the wine we wanted, though they did replace the red with a more expensive bottle for the same price which they didn't have to do and many other places wouldn't. The restaurant didn't look to be more than half full so these sorts of issues were inexcusable.

We went for Sunday lunch. The restaurant sits on a corner of a market square and is spacious with lots of window tables. It was quite noisy inside once it got busy and not all of the food really worked for us. Beef tartare with blue cheese, for example, and beetroot salad that just needed more to it. The mains (cod and pork roast) had good flavours but the plates and the food were cold which was a shame. The highlight was the tarte tatin which was thin and delicate and really quite the treat. Service ok. Four stars.

This really is a gem of a restaurant. We opted for the set lunch, which included a glass of house wine. There were a couple of options for each course, but neither of us could resist the beautiful Cornish mackerel dish with buttermilk sauce as a starter. This was preceded by bread and a quenelle of butter each, and as I’m gluten intolerant mine came as a tiny warm gluten free seeded loaf. Delicious. We opted for different dishes for the main course, Cornish hake with a seaweed beurre blanc and confit duck leg with hen of the wood, celeriac, black garlic and kale. We decided to share a portion of tripe cooked chips. Both dishes were so tasty, and we cleared our plates. My husband’s dessert was a choux bun filled with a white chocolate and rhubarb filling, while I opted for a coffee, which was accompanied by a gluten free lemon cannoli. We felt the set lunch was excellent value for the standard of food, cooking and friendly service. We’ll be keeping an eye out for the next iteration of the set lunch - although the a la carte and tasting menus also looked delicious.

Yes, all right, I admit it - I'm a bit of a Bower House groupie. It's one of those restaurants that reassures you that all is well in the world, even when it patently isn't. I returned for lunch with my old friend and mentor BP, knowing that the team cooking our lunch was new. That's always a moment of anxiety for those of us who crave continuity. 'New' can mean 'disappointing'. I needn't have worried. We had the usual brilliantly personal welcome from the front-of-house team. They made us feel like old friends but without the 'old'. Then menus arrived and the daily set menu - three courses plus a glass of wine - was just brilliant. This was a meal to savour - exciting food eaten in a familiar setting with a great friend. It couldn't have been more enjoyable. And the fact that the chef comes to the table to serve some dishes is a sign of how the Bower House values its clientele, a direct connection between those who cook our food and those who - joyfully! - eat it. To all of you working there: well done. To all of you who haven't yet visited: go! You're in for a treat.

Attention to detail, Excellent! It's not very often I give a five star review, so this is very well deserved. First of all it's a lovely restaurant, excellent location, nice decor inside and lovely ambient music in the background. Four of us went for Sunday lunch, standard choices, beef, pork and chicken with a veggie option as well. After we had ordered we received freshly baked homemade bread along with salted butter, or a chilli garlic butter(very mild but nice). This was the first USP/attention to detail. The meals arrived not too long afterwards, all beautifully presented, so eating with our eyes before we'd even tasted it. The only negative was the Yorkshire puddings served with 'all' dishes not just the roast beef, seems unatural? But it's a very minor point. All dishes tasted lovely. Finished the meal with coffee and petit fours (which was another nice touch). On visiting the toilets they were clean and tidy with small individual cotton hand towels available to dry your hands, whilst listening to the voice of various Shakespearean actors reading from Shakespear plays ( I had Richard Burton) another lovely touch. So overall an excellent restaurant that is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Keep up the individual 'point of difference' It's how a restaurant should be run. Lovely staff as well by the way.

We love the Bower House, it’s our favourite place for special celebrations. Last night it didn’t disappoint and we had a lovely evening. We always love looking in the pretty windows at the charming restaurant before we walk in the door to a warm welcome from Paul and his staff. The food was great - oysters that tasted of the sea, a delicious rabbit terrine, great steaks and my husband’s Barnsley chop all went down a storm. But while my husband and friend waxed lyrical about their pistachio cake and ice cream I was in a quiet place of unctuous delight eating the chocolate and cherry mousse with buttermilk ice cream and a sharp cherry drizzle. I have to tell you it was perfect!

I popped in with my husband and two children today for a coffee during the food market. I don’t know if it’s because I had children with me so I wasn’t the right clientele for them but the service was appalling. I understand they were busy, but I’ve never felt more unwelcome for a coffee in my life. They had no manners what so ever. We weren’t allowed to view the menu because it was too busy so they were not serving anymore customers. That’s fine but be polite about it! I asked about caramel syrup and from behind me at the bar I got a ride ‘no, we only have hazelnut!’ My coffee was so hot it scalded my tongue and made it a very unpleasant drink, which I felt I need to speed up with because I just wanted to leave I’d been made to feel like an inconvenience. I saw a group of 3 come in who also asked for coffee. They were offered any table in the entrance, none of which had been cleaned and rudely told there was a wait. After 5 mins of being ignored they left. Upon paying the bill which I felt like I should have refused to pay for the coffee. I told the barman about my experience. He just said ‘I apologise and turned to the next customer’ Again, it many have been busy but a bit of polite customer service can forgive any wait in my opinion. It’s the rudeness that was so appalling. I won’t be going back or recommending this place to anyone. It’s over priced and pretentious.

I've been to the Bower House a few times over the years. Set in a beautiful market town it's a venue that we might think of as timeless. In reality, it's continually reinvented itself according to customers' changing needs. That's what I saw again today. This August midweek, we had a lunch - two old friends, at a familiar table, looking out over the town square - and it was clearly on very good form. The service was charming and welcoming; the food very good indeed. There's a set price daily lunch menu for £22 for two courses, £29 for three, and that's what I chose. It includes a glass of house wine. My meal was a starter of fish cakes with a zingy Asian salad; a pork chop with chilli and satay sauce; and a revelatory dessert that involved coconut, lime and pineapple sorbet. It was fabulous. The style of the place is unpretentious, done with great style, and attentive to its customers. There's a delicatessen attached which is similarly impressive. So, yes, it was great to be back at the Bower House. You set from the street into a little oasis of luxury, and it was just what was needed today.

We rented 2 rooms: Superior King Room(on second floor)-huge room and massive bathroom with large walk-in shower, bath, large dual vanities, make-up table. King bed with lovely linen, air conditioner and fan. Cosy Room(on first floor)- good size-not exactly small, also with a very large bathroom, has fan but no AC. Both beds had double UK and 2 x USB plugs either side. Welcome tray of fresh fruit and small bottles of gin, whiskey and vodka available in each room (not free) and Nespresso machine. Both rooms had very upmarket decor and the decor in the restaurants is also very nice. Note that the staircase upstairs is narrow so taking up large suitcases would be a struggle. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs that offers breakfasts (very nice-not included in our room rate) and dinner, there’s not much else in the village except a couple of pubs but Stratford Upon Avon is a 20 min drive away with a huge choice of restaurants.

We stayed in room five, which has a beautiful king-size bed and a roll top bath, lots of towels, and fruit to welcome us. We knew beforehand that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and so were aware there would be no food which wasn’t a problem. Shipton on Stour is a very tiny village, but luckily there is a co-op where one can buy breakfast. Might be worth noting that there are two very steep flights of stairs, so we had to leave our bags in the car, and the room had the noisiest extractor fan and huge dehumidifier machine going. Obviously, as it’s in the attic, it must get very hot but these were so noisy it would be impossible to sleep, so we had to unplug them. They were also extremely unsightly, but I suppose there is no choice. To be honest we were quite surprised by the smell in the room on arrival, which was stale cigarette smoke. There also seemed to be an unpleasant smell from the drains, so maybe the room had been empty recently. We ran the shower and taps and it eventually went. Please be careful if, like us, you look at the welcoming drinks tray and presume the wine is for you. It was a small bottle which luckily we didn’t open because it was £40. The mini bottles of gin and whiskey on the welcome tray were £15 each. Luckily the two cookies in the jar were for us, as was the filled bottle of tap water! As I said, the room itself was lovely and comfortable, but at £130 per night I wouldn’t rate it is the five stars it gives itself.

A really nice restaurant with friendly staff. Have been here a number of times before with no complaints. Food wise very good but their recently introduced summer menu (particularly on a Sunday) is a little uninspiring. Rather than their normal Sunday lunch offerings namely roast beef , roast pork etc with all the trimmings they have moved to steaks and BBQ. Surprisingly they still have roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings available but with a steak….not really! Heard a number of negative comments from other diners when we were there so hopefully the restaurant will quickly pick up on this and revert to their standard offerings. If they don’t I will not be returning anytime soon which will be a shame. Pricewise with they way they are pricing at the moment I.e. steaks are a stand alone price and extras are literally priced on top this proved to be quite an expensive family Sunday lunch.

This is a lovely little café with very reasonably priced, generous portions, freshly cooked and (important for me) clearly labelled gluten free options and a kids menu with the simple options kids enjoy. All of us enjoyed our food and whilst the gluten free batter wasn't anything special, the fish was a generous portion and beautifully flavourful and well cooked so this was easily forgiven. The food isn't fancy but it's well done and tasty and doesn't cost a fortune, none if had any complaints. A great place to stop for lunch or brunch, I think the only thing that was a little tricky was fitting around the small tables but given its small size and popularity, you can see why the tables were small. We got there relatively early for our cooked lunch and were waiting about 20 minutes - reasonable as it's freshly cooked and I am gluten free - I think if it was really busy cooked food might take longer? Worth it though.
