Room was adequate. Ceiling height was a problem at times, and I'm not a tall person. Shower incorporated with bath, could not stand up straight to use it because of the ceiling height. Was prompted when checking in online if wanted a bath or shower, I requested a shower. Bar staff were efficient and friendly. Breakfast next morning was a bit Fawlty Towers! Ordered it and it was very slow coming out to the table. A full blown argument could be heard coming from the kitchen. When it did arrive, some items were hot and some were warm. Toaster had one section not working on it. I was already running late for an appointment, so couldn't send the breakfast back for heating up. Location is beside the railway station which is handy if arriving by train. But there is not much else around it. Parking is limited also for this establishment.

After travelling 12 hours turned up at 21:40, the booking email says restaurant closes at 10pm..was refused food. Went to room to hang my suit, no hangars or wardrobes to hang/prepare a suit and to top it off the bathroom hasnt been cleaned and the mirrors are dirty, wifi is terribly slow and the road noise is constant. Believe it or not i had a better nap on the ryainair flight over. There is a holiday inn express 5 metres away, regardless of price, stay there instead

While working away from home, my company booked me into the Red Lion Hotel. I cannot fault one thing, the reception was great when checking in, Room was clean and tidy and bed comfortable with free wi-fi. The building is over 500 years old and the artitecture is quite amazing. While ordering my food the service was fabulous and so is the drinks selection. I could not fault the breakfast either as it was a good English breakfast. With the new management taking over I would highly recommend the Red Lion Hotel if you fancy a meal/drink or accommodation as it is a family place and the price is very reasonable for Cambridge. I’ll be back again.

Okay, here are the facts of my stay at the Red Lion. The description they have posted in our hotel.com is not the reality, the quaint pub that you see in the pictures is part of the IHG chain or owners affiliated with it. You check in to the pub at the IHG hotel next door they give you the key and the breakfast is the express breakfast served at the IHG hotel. Building is listed, but what they don’t tell you is the size of the rooms and specifically the height restrictions and width restrictions in the bathrooms. I am 5 foot 11, and I am not lying when I had to open the door to the shower, so I had enough room to bend down to pick up the shampoo that I had placed in the tray. My colleague who is 6 foot 2 couldn’t even fit underneath the showerhead and could not have a shower. When we went to the management to ask to be moved for the second night we were told we had to pay the difference to the normal retail price of £149 nearly double the price that we paid for our rooms in the Red Lion building, even though there was paint peeling off the wall in my bathroom. My radiator did not work and there was an electric radiator which I had to plug-in then ticked all night and kept waking me up, the management insisted that the heating was working normally and I had to take Engineer up with me to prove to them that my radiator was cold, and even after this, they still insisted I had to pay the difference between the two rooms. After some intense negotiation the IHG manager agreed to refund us the second night and we left at 5pm to find somewhere else to stay. This logic did not make sense as they refunded us more than what it would cost them just to put us in a room in the IHG hotel, which they had many spare, as the hotel, looking at the car park, was barely booked. After a quick search on Hotels.com, we found and booked what can only described as one of the best pubs, hotel and food establishment I have been to for many many months - The Cricketers Saffron Walden. The rooms are spacious and warm and they supply real coffee with cafetières, water and biscuits with a fantastic selection of beer, wine and the food is just brilliant. the way a pub hotel should be. A separate review about The Cricketer to follow. This is now our default venue when our teams are in this area.

This a lovely building with great potential, apparently it had a roset at one time .But sadly it's been let down by it's management and staff. The food is over priced especially the cold ham egg and chips. It was not presented well ,the chef did not care about the eggs .on a good point the sausage and mash looked good. The service was not good as it should have been ,not asked if we enjoyed meal .Also limited menu ,no specials like in most pubs or hotels. I refused to pay the service charge because of the lack of it. I have spent over 50 ys in the hospitality industry and been in many pubs , restaurants and hotels across the country, many have been up to standard some not.I also know it's hard finding good staff who are passionate about their job and enjoy what they are doing . Hopefully things will improve so you can get better reviews. GC

Can't explain why others have given this place a decent review. I'm giving two stars and that's generous. The beef was tasteless and full of gristle. The rest of the plate so overwhelmed by the taste of cloves it was impossible to eat. Really horrible. And then there was the service. It was politely clueless. For example, a bottle of wine was delivered with no glasses. They did come when prompted but the bottle was not open. When prompted it too got opened. But both the lack of glasses and the closed bottle came as a surprise to our server. That was small potatoes tho compared to the awful roast, thin gravy, gristly meat, overwhelming taste of cloves. Pretty horrible actually and totally not worth the money. As an addendum it's worth saying that the fish and chips weren't much better. I'd advise anyone not to go. Really, don't. Awful.

Beautiful hotel. Good rooms which were really cheap for Cambridge and were nicely appointed. We loved the quirky nature of the hotel with its ancient timbers and doors Negatives Weird location. Poor quality food for the money. Odd staff with one exception. We felt like we were in a zombie apocalypse film when we walked in. The staff seemed irritated by our arrival and that feeling continued throughout dinner. Everything felt like too much trouble. There was one very good waitress but we were unimpressed by the others I'm afraid. The cottage pie was frankly inedible and the chilli overspiced. Pudding was ok. Well done, however, for offering a good range of gluten free options.

I arrived at 15:20 only to find the place locked up, with a sign explaining to go to the Holiday Inn to complete check in. Went and checked in at the holiday inn, they gave me the key although it didn't fit the main hotel door. (Seems you need to buzz the intercom each time you wish to go in) The room was one of the smallest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in and with reduced height of the doorways it wasn't a pleasant experience. The room was seriously hot, it got so bad in the night I took my pillow down to the car and slept in that. The outside temperature was cool in the evening but the room was ridiculously hot, no aircon just a very small fan they brought me. Place felt slightly dirty.

I booked to go to this village Inn on the basis of a Booking.com recommendation for Sunday 12th July as I wanted to visit the IMW at Duxford on my way home from Market Harborough. I was looking forward to an enjoyable evening at a village Inn, staying the night and then going home in the morning. I arrived at about 2.30 and found the front door locked - so thinking it would be open later I went to Duxford Museum - excellent and definitely worth a visit. On my return the front door was still looked so I went across to the HIE hotel opposite who - to my surprise booked me in to the Red Lion. I then discovered the Red Lion was closed on Saturdays and Sundays but could stay there and get food in the HIE. I was buzzed an entry into the hotel - no bar, restaurant or lounge - It was like a morgue! I decided at that point I should 'never reinforce a defeat' so handed back the key and drove home. The Booking.com website page did not mention about it being closed all weekends. This is misrepresentation!

This place is not really sure if it’s a pub or a restaurant. Looks like a restaurant and calls itself a restaurant, and it takes reservations — but you help yourself to the menus, choose a table yourself, and order at the bar. Food was decent enough, though service was very slow, even when the place was only 20% full. Our children had all but finished their meal by time the adults’ mains had arrived. When I queried why our food was taking so long, 45 minutes after we had ordered it, the reply was “it’s just cooking... obviously they can’t serve it raw”.

No WiFi password In room so another trip if I want it to the holiday Inn. Toilet water ran constantly so kept me up at nigh, shower tray trap dirty as tray over filled with water when had shower. Parking £6 Breakfast looked awful and basic help your self, cheap sausages, bacon, dried up beans and scrambled egg, no other choice on cooked breakfast. Can’t charge anything to your room either so that could have caused an issue. Where to start!!! Like other IHG franchise hotels they are overpriced and disappointing. They should advertise them as such. Had similar experiences in France. Would score this zero if I could and will let IHG know directly of my displeasure. AS an Elte Gold member expected a better reception. Having booked a double room all we wereoffered was a twin, morte like a triple to allow for the spider who was resident in our room and his web which had not been cleaned!! This IHG is operated by Red Lion who also have the nearby local hotel and restaurant which after a days travel we thought would be good. Wrong, booked a table for 7pm by which time the Ribeye steak, sirloin steak, chicken burger were off!! Ordered the pork t-bone which order was confirmed only to be told ten minutes later that a back up of orders meant that this also has been sold out. Asked for a beef burger without any trimmings and garnishes as a last resort. Burger arrived with all of the trimmings we asked to be removed!! We were offered a replacement a new burger with no garnishes, just a bun. Arrived with a new bun but inside was the old burger as we had cut it, one half and one already chewed quarter. Disgusting service from an AA Rosette kitchen. Needless to say we will not be visiting again to either the hotel or the Red Lion restaurant. We were not charged for the burger but not offered any other compensation for our meals. Only given 1 star as the Sea Bream was not bad. We observed people who came in after us were not advised that there was not a complete menu. Very bad customer service all round, shameful.

I came here to eat as it was the weekend of Flying Legends at Duxford & was staying in the Holiday Inn next door. One of the people I was with is in a wheelchair & after seeing a sign on the wall saying "Accessible Entrance" round the corner off we went, for a start we had to walk on the road and after getting to this "Accessible Entrance" we found it locked so back we came, not a good start....Finally managed to get in & get a table, the menu was "a la carte for the Duxford Air Show" & after looking at the prices we thought we may have to take a bank loan out! We had a lengthy debate about leaving & finding somewhere cheaper but it took us 10 mins to actually get into this restaurant so decided to stay!.....The waiter came over & took our drinks order, as it was a very hot night I asked for a jug of water as well, that never materialised & I had to ask for it again.....He then re-appeared & took our meal selection, waited about 45mins for them to arrive & when they did the young waiter knocked my wine over, there is a plus, he brought me another one! One of my party asked for a refill of lime & lemonade.... that never materialised either.... There were 4 in my party, 3 of us had the burger & chips and the other had the steak, we had 2 10% off vouchers as we were staying at the Holiday Inn but could only use 1 of the vouchers on our table so in the end our bill same to £81.00.....That is the most expensive 3 burger & chips & one steak & chips we have ever had......Going to frame the receipt....A rip off, if you stay at the Holiday Inn, find another place to eat....

The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We ordered drinks (a bit pricey) and food. Starters arrived quickly and were ok. Mains were not upto scratch at all. I sent mine back as it was cold (staff were nice about it) and they said they would cook another. My partner ate his although it was a bit under done. Mine came back a second time with the wrong sides which we mentioned but accepted due to hunger. Food was sadly sent back again as was yet again cold. As it was a meat dish there was no way I was going to risk it - once you can cope with but the second time the chef should have got it right. Waiting staff again were lovely and did apologise agreeing the food was not up to standard. Assistant manager was meant to speak to us but never came over. Still had to pay for everything else apart from that main despite complaints and left feeling a bit ripped off. We were later offered one glass of wine each but would definitely not eat there again.

Visiting from the holiday inn express, which is situated next door we needed a simple meal to fill our needs after a long day at Duxford Imperial War Museum. There is a comphensive menu and the service was good and frendly. Food arrived in a timely fashion, was nicely presented and tasty.

Sehr freundliches Personal.

The hotel is charming and as lots of great friendly staff, the breakfasts were delicious and the dinners to.our only drawback was our room, it was clean but to tiny for 3 nights stay,no wardrobe or drawers just three coat hangers on the wall.im sure next time we book we will ask for a different room.

Wish I had read previous reviews before visiting this restaurant.Arrived in the mid afternoon and was pleasantly greeted by the young lady working behind the bar. She offered me several samples before deciding on which of the beers to choose. A nice touch.Went for dinner some time later. Restaurant put me in mind of J D Weatherspoon or similar chain. Quite busy.Staff were friendly and attentive. Ordered bottle of wine which arrived nicely cooled in a cooler although the waiter did not offer to open the bottle or poor the customary taster.Ordered the Fish and Chips which comprised 8 hand cut chips in a stack, a small piece of battered fish, half a lemon and small containers of mushy peas and tartare sauce. Not worth the £14.50 price tag but nicely presented.Would I eat here again? No I do not think so.

Welcoming, friendly and very welcoming staff. The Red Lion is a comfortable and well presented building that has many attractive features showcasing it's long history, much has been said about the 13th century beams supporting the ceiling and they naturally contribute to the character. The overall impression of the establishment is very pleasing. The cuisine for dinner was extraordinary good, the menu is varied and is updated regularly, standards of the food are very high and the ingredients all of the absolute highest quality. The breakfasts too, beautifully presented and excellent in every way.I can't praise the food enough, terrific local produce both meat and vegetables, all prepared superbly. The station is accessible just metres away and the trains into Cambridge or London very frequent. Cambridge is only 11 minutes which encouraged us to leave the car!Anyone interested in culture, Audley End House and Gardens, which is run by English Heritage is just a short drive away. If military/aircraft history is to your taste, Duxford Imperial War Museum is literally just down the road and even if you're not a fan of that sort of thing, this place will connect you, it's amazing.Cambridge and Saffron Walden are nearby so there's loads to do during the day if you don't fancy propping up the bar!No real negatives but I need to mention that if you are a light sleeper the proximity to the railway and the constantly busy A505 could be a negative.Due to the proximity of tis road, the location doesn't really lend itself to pleasure walking in the immediate area so a car is pretty essential.None of this impaired our stay in any way but I know that some might be more fussy.

Restaurant/Hotel was very clean and very welcoming. We had a table in the coolest part of the restaurant (suited me fine) which consisted of small rooms around the building. We were immediately given a menu and ordered our drinks. The menu was varied but all sounded delicious. For starters we had black pudding scotch eggs which were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. My main meal was a beef burger with chips, relish and coleslaw. Again delicious and perfectly cooked. Partner had the Fish and chips which was also excellent. Lastly we had ice cream. The staff were attentive and polite. An all round lovely experience, if only we lived locally!

We often visit the Red Lion pub, we both must say the food is nice, wine and beer good decor fine... Now the suns out great garden albeit a little road noise..and right next to Whittlesford Parkway Station. Andy is such an exceptional chap never a moment he is uneasy to please, polite professional and always smiling with wonderful manners making a welcoming visit exceptional and both Lindsay and myself agreed he offers 5 star Ritz service!! The younger staff will learn lots from him I'm sure, a true credit to the Red Lion and a must visit not too far from Duxford Airfield too!

Decent meal, split soup is nice, and the smoked haddock ok. Menu choice is limited, and not cheap. £4.70 for an average real ale is extortionate. Clearly trying to be a gastro pub, would fare better offering more pub type food at realistic prices and decent portions.

We were staying in this hotel and enjoyed an evening meal on a Sunday evening. The food was really delicious, quite traditional with an inventive twist and very well presented. The staff on duty couldnt be helpful enough. The price was mid range, not cheap but not worth it. A really enjoyable experience.

Eight of us arrived at an odd time, between meals, in a hurry. The staff (particularly Alex) were really good at helping us out. They couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating. Food arrived as quickly as could be expected and was really good. Thanks very much!

Business trip with several colleagues, this hotel was booked in advance for 10 by the company. Firstly, don't follow satnav, it'll take you to the wrong side of the railway track.First impressions when driving into the car park 'looks quaint' though the large hotel sharing the car park looks a much better stay. It's right next to a railway station which is very busy & noisy with cars picking up & dropping off commuters.Reception was a joke. A very flustered lady attempting to find the booking which was exasperated by 2 colleagues turning up a couple of minutes after. Once that was sorted, off to the room to unpack & freshen up. This place is a rabbit warren.Up to the attic (room 12) which is up narrow stairs with hardly room to negotiate with bags. Although the room was fairly large, it is dominated by an enormous bed. There's room in that bed for 4 people, or 3 large people & the TV which is fastened low down on the wall at the end if the bed doesn't help getting to the bath room. The bathroom has a bath with a shower attachment, but no shower curtain. Not that you could stand in the bath anyway as the ceiling slopes covering half the bath. It's the same in the room. Sloping roof makes you duck to get past the bed, avoiding the TV to get to the bathroom. The evening meal had been booked when the hotel booking was made, but wasn't confirmed, so no booking... The staff did manage to 'fit us in' & the food was good, though not hot.Service appeared to be a bit of a panic, as there was another fairly large group booked at a huge table in the centre of the dining room. We all called it a night just after 10.30 when the place died.Breakfast didn't start well & went downhill. There were cereals & yesterdays croixants. Orange & milk.Breakfast had to be ordered individually & was so slow, we all gave up.So to sum up. If you like quaint hotels next to busy railway stations & service from staff who don't appear to understand the service ethic, then this is the place for you.Business travellers with schedules to meet beware. You'll be late for your first appointment.

Ordered sirloin burger they brought me fish and chips. Burger eventually arrived, dry tasteless dressing poor would not eat here again. Sat me on a single table next to a party of five who climbed over me to get out.

We ate at the Red Lion whilst we were staying at the Holiday Inn across the car park. The Red Lion has character and the staff were very welcoming. The food is a little on the expensive side if you are on a budget but is well worth the money. There is a reasonably good selection of food so most people should be happy. The food took a little while to arrive however at least you know that it is cooked fresh and not warmed up.

This place is very interesting. I had a feeling the Red Pimpernel might have stayed there once believe it was built the same time. With this I am not referring to old rooms, actually it was clean and well decorated for English standards. Like mister old things around Cambridge this one has got that Harry Potter mystique and charm to it. Would recommend it anytime :)

Surprised that the restaurant had run out of burgers, but that aside the dishes that we had were cooked well and were enjoyable. I thought the menu prices were on the high side for the dishes advertised and the bar environment where we ate. Watching the waitress spraying an old tea cloth, coughing and then wiping the table wasnt that impressive either even if she did excuse herself!

It all started with Booking.Com, booked a room double for £94 two or three weeks in advance. All goes well until Booking.Com tell me I can have it cheaper so I cancel my booking and try to rebook at the now lower price only to be told no. Contacted Booking.com they apologised for the error so I asked for my initial booking to be reinstated again no that room had now gone. So understanding that these booking agents do not have the whole set of rooms in their pockets I contacted the hotel directly. Spoke to very nice young man and was informed that the booking from Booking.Com in my name was for a single room and not a double anyway, so I asked if he had a double for the night I required and he said yes and we could have it for the price stated. So I booked it and asked for confirmation which I duly got by email one room double for £94 pounds. The day came we set off on our journey at 1400 from Tavistock in Devon to said hotel in Cambridgeshire expecting to reach there early evening, well the traveling gods did not smile on us this day, it took 4 hours to get out of Devon. On the M4 having a coffee break I phoned to say that we were on our way but would be a tad late due to traffic and the young said that was OK. Whilst at the coffee break checked my phone for messages to find a confirmation from hotel reception about the room, now remember this.Arrived at 23-30 went into the bar to ask about our room and the young man said Ah! you are the gent who phoned early please come this way. Cut a very long story short no bloody room.It turns out that this hotel is part of the Holiday Inn express group and across the yard was a new hotel with a manager, where we were taken. He was dumbfounded and could not understand what had happened, at this time I did not care, both my wife and I were dead on our feet and just wanted to go to bed and I asked very politely whilst refusing the offers of sandwiches and coffee, if he had a bed for us to be told no. So I again politely said find one and soon as I was not finding it funny anymore and my wife was beginning to feel sick at the thought of spending the night in the car. He contacted another HIexpress in Cambridge and yea they had a bed but at higher rate £105 approx and it was an access room meaning disabled would we like it? does the Pope wear funny hats? We were given instruction on how to get there and off we went. This was an adventure in its self middle of the night pitch black, on arrival they took our money and we were subjected to the usual rules and regs by the night staff by which time I had gone to sleep at the counter. We went to our room found the bed great, found the bathroom great, found the hairs from the last occupant still in the shower and the wrong shade of lipstick on my towel not so bloody great. When we left next morning we reported the lack of hygiene and was asked was there anything they could do for us I said yes should I in a moment of madness ever book with this chain again would they please refuse me.Before leaving the first hotel, the manager said that Booking.Com had cancelled our booking in July. I said Ok but after cancelling my booking with Booking.Com I booked with the hotel direct, not booking.com and I had confirmations from the hotel on the day of the booking and the on day of supposedly arrival by text. For all this hassle and disruption, we were offered coffee and sandwiches. NEVER AGAIN

My room (14) had a massive bed in there which turned out to be 2 large beds pushed together but it was sooo comfy with a massive amount of pillows & 2 large cushions! There was also a desk & chair to work from plus lots of storage areas. The room was very large along with very cool features & decor but with a modern twist! They even had 2 bathrobes hanging up along with the usual tea & coffee making facilities with a large flat screen TV mounted on the wall & a hairdryer. The bathroom was finished to a high standard & a large stand in shower but no bath (if you prefer baths)I had dinner in there restaurant. For starters I had deep fried Brie ~ this was lovely! For main course I ordered a sirloin burger but instead a steak came out this turned out to be the waiters mistake so I managed to agree a discounted rate & had this instead it was super tasty & perfectly cooked! I even managed to squeeze in a pudding & had chocolate mousse with cream & praline ~ delightful! The Internet was free & I had no issues what so ever tethering up my laptop to work & also phones to it - you do have to get a separate code for each device you want to connect. The super large bed was very comfortable & allowed me to have a great nights sleep :-) For breakfast I decided to opt for a full English except eggs (this even comes with black pudding) it was all very tasty & the sausages WOW! If I am back in this area for work I would stay here again without a shadow of a doubt! I hope you enjoyed my review & photos that I took - enjoy your stay if your coming to this hotel

This establishment has been restored in attractive 'heritage' style and offers all the requirements of travellers - refreshments, food and lodgings. The menu is interesting and the meals are good quality, served in generous portions at very fair prices. The Sunday Lunch was impressive and other options would provide for a wide range of tastes. The real ales are also attractive. The situation is just on the North side of the A505 at Whittlesford Bridge, but needs to be 'looked out for' because it is a bit out of sight in a cul de sac by the station. Well worth a visit and a very convenient facility near the Duxford IWM.

My wife and I went to this lovely pub with our dog for dinner. We booked a table in the bar area which is a real cosy bar. Everyone in the bar and the bar staff were so friendly. We sat there for a couple of hours having a drink plus dinner. The food was great, especially the home made pie. We will definitely return.
