The Red Lion at Charing Heath in Ashford

We held my aunts wake here yesterday and was perfect. Close to crematorium. Buffet was an array of sandwiches and quiche with tea and coffee for £10pp. Was provided room on right for as long as we wanted. Claire was super helpful in organising and on the day. Would definitely recommend for wake after crematorium service.

Would give 0 stars if I could. Online says its open and nothing outside to say it's shut, looks like fake reviews of people from last week. Went in to see about having a wake there. Male owner sat there and told us to "Get out he was on a call". Very rude and upsetting.

The interior of this old pub is quite pleasant. Our visit was spoiled by a group of men sitting at the bar swearing loudly, even though one of them had a young child with them. The staff never challenged this I paid £17 for two drinks so think I was entitled to enjoy them in a more pleasant environment.

This pub is great, new owners have really made it look brilliant, it was busy when we came in with a mix of drinkers and tables, brilliant friendly staff behind the bar , good choice of beers and wines. This time we booked a table and werent disappointed, there’s a fair bit on the menu so plenty to choose from, food was fantastic We will definitely go back

What a gem! Stay here for 1 night before getting the train to France food was outstanding and the hospitality even better. Excellent room and breakfast was superb. Foolishly we forgot to get names of the Mother and Daughter team that run this fantastic little place. Will definitely be staying again. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left we felt special. Wonderful ambience ‘oldy worldly’ interior of the pub itself and the bedroom modern with all the right facilities, wife loved the Prosecco in the room nice touch. Thank you for a wonderful stay

So glad this pub now offers a friendly team , wonderful food and service When I first visited this beautiful old pub it was great and as we were moving to the area we’re happy to find a decent local pub steeped in history serving good food However over the last few years it had declined and really went downhill as did the clientele and atmosphere and food Going back last night for drinks and for a Sunday lunch today we were so pleased to find the front of house staff warm , attentive , polite and welcoming . The Sunday roasts we chose were chicken and lamb shank , I can honestly say the presentation and the food were perfect , best roast I’ve had in ages . Thankyou to the chef and wonderful staff I’m So happy to have this pub as my local

We stopped here on the way to the Channel Tunnel as they accommodate motorhomes. - Everything ticked every box. We had the burgers which were fantastic and a couple of pints of very good ale. The new landlord and landlady were very welcoming and friendly and the locals made us feel very welcome.Not often I like a place this much at first visit but we will be back when we next use the tunnel. Really recommend this pub.

A quiet lunch, we were the only ones in the pub on the Wednesday after Christmas. This is a proper country pub, open fire, wooden floors, decent beers, an eclectic choice of music; all that is lacking is the church and cricket field to make it perfect. The food is good pub standard, steak, fish, burgers with vegetarian and vegan choices. The burgers are substantial, I'm still unable to eat some seven hours after lunch, home made and excellent, chips tasty and the right amount. My only criticism is that the Salami and bacon on the burger I had was overkill; one or the other, but not both. The staff are very friendly and attentive and baby friendly. We have been before and will be back, and if we lived closer, this would be our local.

I visited the venue for a birthday dinner with a friend. Her food was good. My food was phenomenal. Hot, flavoursome and served by the loveliest of team. Roll on Thai night Monday....

As we arrived at 2.30 on Friday afternoon the landlord saw us closed the window and locked the pub,would have been nice to have said sorry we are closed can I help. Trying to book a table for a meal, sorry going to go somewhere else.o

Happened to be in the area and wanted a drink and something to eat at lunchtime. On arrival the staff were really friendly and welcoming. The menu had all the usual favourites and we had the burger and the cod. Both were absolutely fantastic (we tried each other’s meals), the best we’ve had in a while. The prices were not expensive either. We’ve got to come back this way in a couple of weeks and will definitely be going there again. Would certainly recommend anyone to try it out

Don't bother... another disappointing pub with poor service and even poorer food. It's a shame with it being such a nice looking pub from the adverts and with high hopes of a nice meal out.

It started so well. To start with the staff were friendly and accommodating then it all changed after I point out the scampi was burned. The friendly waiter took it to the kitchen to get it resolved. Then we see other staff pointing at us and can hear what’s being said and it wasn’t nice. With in 3 minutes the foods back and I’m told it fine, that’s all there willing to do. I’m also told they cook fresh scampi for me and it burn again. Now 2 problems with this 3 minute cook time might be possible but burn again. Also my wife took a picture of our dinners (it was our wedding anniversary) and it was the same scampi. So to Summarise, only 1 friendly member of staff. Chef or Owner that can’t cook scampi and burn if (twice if you believe them). Lying to the customer if you believe me. Hostile staff if you don’t agree with them.Would not recommend to another and haven’t felt that uncomfortable in a restaurant for years.

Great 16th Century pub with newly renovated rooms in a separate building to the pub. Lovely linen and towels. Parking. Friendly staff and good breakfast with delicious local bread. Good location about 40mins to Ashford, Dover and Canterbury.

What a Happy Find. After driving from Norfolk to Kent via Greenwich… we find this wonderfully warm welcome, campervan stop and fantastic breakfast / Coffee cooked by Matt and serve by Sarah, who deserve to do well. We have to mention Sarah’s dad, who is an amazing Historian…. We loved all your recommendations!

My Ma booked this earlier in the week, for a table for Saturday lunchtime.We arrived and took up our table with was grubby, with crumbs on and stains on it from previous drinks etc. Surely if you have a table booking, you'd make the effort to clean up, ready for your customer.Ordered drinks and after we got them, waited a long time before the waitress came over and left us menus, then a few minutes later after we'd been getting all excited about the various selections, she came back and rattled off half of the menu which wasn't available today! This happened to be all the really exciting options. Eventually she came back to place our orders. When we mentioned that we were disappointed that so many options were off the menu today, we were told that the chef was off today! Yes, on a Saturday! Also she said that this day off had been booked up well in advance. This begs the question that a) why did they not organise another chef with so much time to do so, and b) if half the menu was not an option, then mention it to the customer when they call to book, not when they have their drinks in front of them!So, orders placed and yet another visit back to our table to tell us that one of these options is not available as they only had enough for two of us.That's us done. Drinks paid for and we left, very very disappointed.This was supposed to be a lovely treat for my Ma but it turned out to be anything but.This used to be such a lovely place to spend time, but I probably won't ever bother sgain due to this.Be warned folks

We visited this absolutely fantastic country pub after a shopping trip, we had done our homework and were looking forward to staying and expiring the food that was on the menu.What we got was an absolute treat, fantastic service,atmosphere,food .. food,we had the deep fried pork cheek and chicken liver pate to start with the gnocchi and 10 ounce burger with smoked bacon and Brie..both of our meals were fantastic . Rooms in the converted barn,we stayed in room 3 upstairs in the converted barn and it was delightful.Breakfast was cooked for us by our host Matt and again we were totally satisfied.

The Red Lion in Charing Heath certainly has everything and more you’d want from a village pub. The food, selection of drinks and atmosphere is excellent!! The front of house are warm and welcoming. They are happy to answer any questions you might have and the bar staff are knowledgeable and so lovely. Credit to the chefs as the food is excellent! You have to try the Pork Belly Sunday Roast. I know they have an exciting Summer ahead with various music/band nights - I’ve heard they are not to be missed!

Enjoyed a lovely night at the Red Lion, pub full of character & charm serving great food with a good selection of beer & friendly staff & locals.Our clean, modern & comfortable room was in a recently converted barn just opposite the pub across the car park. Very cosy on a cold & wet Autumn evening.A hearty full English breakfast was a great start to the morning & the perfect finish to our overnight stay.The Covid social distancing & 10pm closing rules applied but this did not affect our stay. Still strange seeing people wearing masks entering the pub but no doubt this old pub has seen this before in the 17th/18th centuries with the local Highway Men !

Due to COVID a reduced menu is being offered, but still enough choice. The starters are a little overpriced for the the portion size on offer, £7 for a small scotch egg and 2 teaspoons of piccalilli. The steak was very good, cooked as requested and a good size. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Would definitely return.

This pub is steeped in history and has been sympathetically refurbished to a high standard . Very clear Covid rules throughout Lovely , friendly staff Efficient service We brought our dog which is a huge plus for us . We enjoyed the roast belly of pork and the roast chicken , very plentiful portions of well cooked food , good selection of vegetables . But the brownie was ...... THE BEST EVER ! Reasonably priced meal in a great setting We will definitely be back , especially as we are moving up the road soon !!! Thank you all x

We have been here a few times and it’s fast becoming a favourite. Staff are so friendly and helpful, food is delicious and it’s dog friendly. Amazing choice of wines, including many wines produced locally. Cannot wait to come back.

Visited on the last day of the help out eat out scheme. Early evening booking with friends. Warm welcome on arrival and a choice of table even through we had booked which was a nice touch. Plenty of space between tables and hand sanitiser etc. Menu choice was varied catering for all tastes. A relaxed atmosphere with a country pub feel.

Having read the other reviews I had to double check we had visited the right pub, but we had. We visited while the eat out to help out offer was running which may have had some influence on our experience. The pub was very busy, we had booked although I'm not sure there was any record of our booking from the initial confusion. We were sat at an extendable table which was extended, unfortunately it was rather broken and as a result unsteady. Having nearly fired our drinks at each other a few times and being told the table "does catch people out" we asked to move. After we vacated a drill appeared and the table was fixed, not sure why that hadn't been done before? When booking we asked about children's meals and was told the chef would be able to do some chicken nuggets for our youngest, she is rather fussy hence checking before booking. We tried to order the promised nuggets and were told that they couldn't be done. Sausages were offered, which was fine. I ordered the unspecified "steak" at £18, the unspecified cut should have set alarm bells ringing. We also had lamb shank and a kids burger.When the food arrived the sausages looked like sticks of charcoal, clearly over cooked. The steak, which was ordered medium, was so thin it would have been impossible to cook anything other than well done, it seemed a very cheap cut and certainly not worth £18. The hand cut chips, were rather undercooked as well. I don't know how you make a mushroom taste like they had managed to but it was awful!Thankfully the lamb was good and the burger was ok, although more under cooked chips.We were initially given someone else's bill, probably because we moved tables, and were then charged adult meal price for the kids burger. Since it was half price anyway I couldn't be bothered to complain.All in all pretty poor from somewhere with such good ratings.

So glad to have a brilliant "local" like this just a stroll from our home. The food is fantastic and a far cry from that offered by previous landlords. It's definitely my favourite pub now. Staff are helpful and friendly too. What more could you want.

First visit and we will be back again. Really impressed tonight, from the waitresses welcome as we arrived to the lovely atmosphere, good choice of music playing, the food was amazing, two of us had steak which was tasty and the staff were so helpful considering how busy it was. Definitely recommend.

Discovered this pub by accident driving through the Kent countryside. Stopped for Sunday lunch. Hubby and I both ordered beef. The beef was cooked pink, just how i like it, absolutely delicious. Great array of beautifully cooked fresh vegetables to accompany. It is the best Sunday roast I’ve ever eaten out. Lovely setting, friendly staff. All COVID rules followed, cannot wait to come back.

We had a gathering at the Red Lion after a local funeral attendance 20th March and this pub venue proved an excellent choice just a shame this brilliant pub had to close it's doors after our departure as with all other pubs & restaurants owing to the virous nowing spreading through the world at this time.

We have been here on more than a couple of occasions since the new landlord has taken over and it just keeps getting better and better. Had an evening meal with friends, starters mains and desserts, all without fault. This is my local pub and it really is the place to go to, whether you want a drink with friends or a quiet moment or even better, having a meal here. Tonight the food was sublime as per usual...The pub was heaving as there was also a live band and the atmosphere was wonderful. Matt/Nicola..thank you for bringing our amazing pub & meeting place back to us. We appreciate all your hard work and will continue to support your amazing venture. Thanks to all your team x

What a pub. The interior is amazing and the staff are so friendly. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. Now the food, I haven’t eaten at a pub for a long time where the food,presentation and amount is perfect! Let alone be as reasonably priced. I’m so impressed and this is absolutely my number one place to go!

We have driven past this particular pub on numerous occasions and never thought it looked worth trying ! However we were told new owners and chefs had taken over and it was well worth trying . So today I took my family for a Sunday roast and I can say it was exceptional . Friendly service and the quality of the meal was first class with very good sized portions and importantly all the chicken and roast sirloin , together with the vegetables and potatoes were all cooked perfectly . We usually drive to The Dog at Wingham which has rave reviews and a number of awards ! This matches it for quality . The desert menu again was excellent and we chose the cheesecake, ice cream and creme caramel , all of which were most enjoyable. The pub itself has a nice local pub feel to it . We will definitely be returning !

I cannot recommend the roast beef enough - succulent and tasty.....with perfect trimmings. The new owners have engaged in an excellent revamp for this country pub, making it a great venue for Sunday lunch.

Second wake. Much improvement. New owners. Friendly cosy lovely fire. The scotch eggs delicious. Lovely scones. All done very nice. First wake was fine but dead flies and flowers in window sill. Now it’s all been painted. Nice and clean. Outside nice as well. Would go back for a meal

Had an amazing Sunday Roast here, the food was cooked to perfection. Had the pleasure of having the lamb, and trying my partners Roast beef too. Both amazing, and the cauliflower cheese ball was a nice touch too.Came back mid week and was equally impressed with my main too. Keep up the good work.

The Red Lion on Charing Heath pub has recently been refurbished- beautiful decor and lovely little touches- quite a difference compared to when we last visited over 3 years ago! Based on recent local villagers recommendations we thought it was about time we gave it a try. We visited on a Saturday lunch time at 1pm and there was just one other table occupied. Throughout our whole experience no one else entered the pub which meant it was hugely lacking atmosphere and ambience. We ordered main dishes only and so glad we did as the portions were huge. Food was forgettable. Fish and chips- cod was tasteless and the batter was dripping in oil- chips were also poor lacking any kind of crispness. One small triumph (if not slightly random) were the Crispy Fried Gherkins- yum! An exciting looking wine list though full of local English bubbly and wine so maybe we will return for this if nothing else but I fear the lack of 'pub atmosphere' i.e. punters may deter us from returning which is a terrible shame as it is our closest pub. Disappointed.

I wanted to share my recent visit on here as this pub as I understand under new owners/management gave us a fabulous Sunday roast. My mum and I had roast pork and my wife chose the roast beef- all plates we couldn’t fault - it really was lovely- a great selection of vegetables too including cauliflower cheese. The whole experience was exceptional- friendly staff and great atmosphere and recently refurbished- I thoroughly recommend this place

Having vowed never to return to this pub given our previous experience, we decided ,following good feedback since being taken over, to give it another go. We were not disappointed. Very warm welcome and excellent food. The menu wasn't extensive but what was listed was inspiring and innovative. The refurbishment was tastefully done and overall was very impressed. Will definitely be coming back again

What a fantastic atmosphere and delicious food. Great to see our local so busy. Don’t make the mistake we made on a Saturday night (or a Sunday for the delicious roast) - you have to book, but if you don’t book, be patient, be prepared to wait for your food whilst you enjoy the buzz, and you won’t be disappointed

New owners and newly refurbished. Amazing food and great customer service. A real personal touch. I would highly recommend.

have to say the Red is looking great, inviting and friendly Matt and Nicky & Dom cannot do enough to help you enjoy your time in the pub/restaurant we booked last minute they managed to fit us in as near to the time we wanted as they good which must of been a squeeze for them as the restaurant was very busy. The food was better than we had anticipated having been before we thoroughly recommend a visit. we will be going back that is for sure.

Where to start? It was my mum's birthday and I didn't want to say anything as I didn't want to embarrass her but we couldn't wait to get out!!

Had Sunday lunch and paid with Groupon. Nothing wrong with the food but certainly not worth full price had I not already paid Groupon. I think they need to review their pricing/ visit their competitors.

Found at a fork in the road , first impression was the outside of the pub needed a “brush up”. Upon entering found the pub to have a lot if character but in need of a clean. Service ok at the bar , ale choice limited to one. We were only here for a drink so can not comment on food.

We went here today, a meal for two, staff very friendly and attentive, felt at home, lovely countryside location, and a great roast in a traditional country pub. Relaxing time. Thank you

Sunday roast for four & meal for four purchased through groupon, dissapointing, but average meal, sorry wouldn't reccommend.

Friendly staff, welcoming and nice atmosphere, food probably better during the week., the Sunday menu was limited and very average. Meat thin and bland like sliced Delhi meat, I’m glad it was a groupon deal as I definitely wouldn’t have paid the full price.

We are a family with 2 kids on a roadtrip and looking for a good pub to eat and drink. So lucky we found this place!!! Very friendly people, excellent food and drinks, childrens menu. Perfect night

It was a quick lunchtime refuelling stop so we had a chicken baguette and a beef one. A simple thing but a lot of care had gone into the prep of the meat which for both was succulent and fresh. Good side salad. With this attention to a simple snack, I am keen to try a meal here. Very friendly landlord.

Booked the Red Lion for lunch today, they had a fantastic live band called "The Sunday Roast" and we had delicious burgers and the best ever chips! Wonderful friendly staff, just faultless! Thank you everyone

Popped in as passing by and what a lovely surprise . They have a lovely friendly French chef who cooks everything on the spot . We had the tempura prawns which were absolutely delicious . We will definitely try and visit again .

This is a very pretty little pub in the countryside.We had seafood for lunch and this was served by a very friendly lady. The chef came and talked to us as well. Would highly recommend this place.

Been a lot of times since Alex, Emma and Fabian took over, it's nice to see our local pub back to its very best, the food is out of this world with local fresh produce being used. A must for all food lovers

We wanted a quick bite to eat half way round our walk. We enjoyed our chicken and avocardo baguettes (freshly cooked chicken). The staff were friendly and as it was quiet we had a nice chat with them about the area.We would like to go back for a full meal, the menu looked very tasty.

This was not just the best meal we have had in a long time, but the most enjoyable eating experience ever. Everyone most attentive and very pleasant.

We had a family "Sunday Lunch" last week at The Red Lion pub in Charing Heath. As a party of ten we were welcomed on entering by the landlord and as time progressed all staff had a short chat with us, this included the Chef who ensured we were happy with the food. All our party enjoyed there lunch including the two children. The weather was quite cold outside but the wood burner fires and the warm atmosphere generated by the staff ensured a cosy experience. I will visit this friendly establishment again for sure.

Lived in the village for years and the local pub has had its ups and downs but had heard good things about the changes and decided to experience the new owners and food and was not disappointed. On entering had a very warm welcome from the landlord and landlady and made to feel very welcome. Decided to eat in the restaurant and can say the food, service and overall experience was perfect after a stressful week. The whole sea bream was cooked really well and as it should be plus presentation and the proudness of the chef with his food was refreshing. Definitely will be back in the coming weeks.
