Such a beautiful pub on the inside and out, sadly let down by the service from one of the waitresses who clearly doesn't like to deal with the public. The roast dinners had such potential to be amazing, however the food was let down by bad tasting gravy and all the vegetables tasted of aniseed, and there was no stuffing nor cranberry sauce to accompany the roast turkey! Sadly wont be back any time soon.

We brought our American friends to stay at The Red Lion as they are big fans of the new series of All Creatures Great and Small which was filmed in the area. I hadn't ever been here and I was completely impressed by the scenery and the friendliness of the people. We stayed four nights in a very well-furnished and cosy room with a super bathroom and the village was so quiet we slept very well. We don't have a dog but we were delighted to see so many people had brought theirs and we got chatting to several guests who allowed us to pet their pooches. We had breakfast each day and dinner on three evenings and we also sampled quite a few of the ales and wines. The food was excellent and the service from all the staff was outstanding. We were especially impressed with Simone who was very attentive and had a great sense of humour. I can't wait to return to this lovely area and we will certainly stay at The Red Lion again.

Visited on a Sunday evening in August. It was. Old and dreary out and the log fire was as welcome as it would have been in November. Sat in the lounge for drinks and then ate dinner in the lovely spacious dining room. Great that Sunday roasts were still being served in the evening. Ordered a sausage roll with HP sauce as a snack, a Twaites steak and ale pie with homemade chips and mushy peas and a roast Porchetta served with garlic herb roasts, greens. Chantey carrots, red cabbage and Yorkshire pudding. The sausage roll was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The porchetta was lovely and stuffed with a stuffing that had a slight kick to it - slightly disappointing given there was only one slice of meat, albeit quite thick but by nature of the cut fatty, could have done with two slices. The roasts weren’t very crispy and there was only one tiny chantaney carrot - which again was disappointing but didn’t spoil the overall dish. The pie was hearty and warming and a generous portion. Finished with sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which made plenty of sauce and was light and airy. Overall a good ‘winters’ meal on a naff summers day

A beautiful hotel. Fantastic staff. Might stay again? We arrived at 11am and could collect our key but was told the room would be ready for after the wedding at Tithe Barn. (15 min taxi). The receptionist was lovely and explained everything we needed to do once we return late at night. She assured us the room would be ready by the afternoon either way. We arrived at 12am after the wedding and upon arriving to the room, found it dirty, rubbish left around, the TV on and the bedding not changed! It was appalling. This is something we have never encountered. On the plus, we called the nighttime staff member via the mobile and he kindly gave us a cottage, which was an upgrade. He did great in the circumstances. But the rooms seem so run down and definitely need modernising / a fresh layer of paint. The breakfast was lovely. The start here were also brilliant. The reception also had a list of taxi numbers which is also handy. The location is just beautiful and peaceful. But for the cost per night - we are unsure if we will return, particularly after they didn’t prepare our room. Only the night time staff member was apologetic. We felt that this was not good enough.

Perfect location, with amazing views. Great spacious bar and restaurant, nicely decorated. Lovely outdoor large beer garden, with a covered and open air option. We very much enjoyed the atmosphere and stunning views. Would be a great base for a walking holiday, which we would consider for sure. Negative: The food was presented well but unfortunately it was really tasteless. It was a real shame. I tried to enjoy it as much as possible with the stunning views and with being at a great venue. Even adding more sauce just to help with the flavour. The agreement was mutual on the table unfortunately. The waitress also on clearing the table, didn’t ask how our food was or engage in any general conversation or eye contact. I didn’t expect this from a hospitality point of view. It made for a strange table presence. It was only on thanking her, there was some acknowledgment that she was leaning over the table. Overall a great venue. I would be hesitant to re-order food based on this experience. Hopefully it was just an off day :)

This pub used to be known for its lovely location by the river and excellent food. It is still in the same lovely location but the dining experience has definitely deteriorated. We had booked a table for dinner. We were forgotten by the staff and eventually asked if we could go to our table. They had not taken our order whilst we were having drinks beforehand so we were starting from scratch in that respect. The staff did their best but were rushing so much that the service was functional but no more. The food arrived quite quickly but was of average quality. The decor and table setting was shabby/tired. It was not cheap. Sadly we are crossing this erstwhile favourite off our list

I stayed here whilst attending a wedding at Tithe Barn, fantastic location beautiful setting. Staff were extremely polite and helpful, big shout out to Jess who went out of her way, being friendly and having good banter and chat. Rooms are lovely and clean, styled to the surroundings of a country inn, but perfect for a few nights. The cottages were a great base and ideal for the bridal party to get ready in.

We booked a table at the Red Lion Burnsall for dinner on the 12th and 14th October. We have eaten here many times before and a couple of times since it was taken over by Thwaites. We had a lovely meal on both evenings. The starters were of a decent size and main courses were just right. Their fish and chips meal is superb and the brisket my wife had was very good. I had their fish pie on the second night and it’s the best fish pie I have eaten for a long time. The staff were friendly and service was very good. It was nice to see local staff. We will definitely eat here again. Food prices have gone up recently but they have everywhere so don’t expect a cheap meal but I’d say the quality is good and no more than other similar restaurants.

We took a walk here from Grassington, following a friend’s recommendation. We sat indoors, near the bar. We would have sat outside, but someone was noisily pressure washing the deck - way too loud. It is stupid to do this early afternoon, when it is busy. Food was not bad per se, but was really poor value for money. A rump steak sandwich was nicely presented, but had only a minuscule amount of very thin steak in it. Silly me, I should have taken a picture, but I see others have taken pictures of the lack of quantity in their offerings too. This place suffers from delusions of grandeur. You can get away with this if you provide good value. This place most certainly does not, but it’s the only game in town, so they get away with cheapskate offerings. Will not return.

Overpriced and poor quality sandwiches in supermarket sliced bread at tip top prices. The only reason it’s busy is that there is little or no competition. The nearby tea rooms (when and if) they are open are a better proposition.

Once back we were shown to our room which was in the Manor house. Lovely Decor and fantastic ensuite bathroom. The evening meal and Breakfast were perfect. The Staff were all easy to approach even when very busy , they couldn't do enough. We were allowed to leave the car on the carpark whilst on the Sunday we walked to Bolton Abbey along the river, as we arrived back we sat out on the lovely terrace decking over looking the river. Beautiful back drop to enjoy another Drink and a bite to eat before we set off. All in all a fantastic weekend I'd give full marks for 👍

The pub itself and its location is fantastic that’s why I havnt out a 1* but the food was bad. My two year olds kids meal had a small chicken bone attached to his chicken strip which is unacceptable in a child’s meal as it’s a high chance of a choking hazard. My buttermilk chicken burger was cold. The pulled pork fries were cold and the pork on it was not good qaulity and really really dry. A few people had roast dinners that were tiny and who puts courgettes on a Sunday roast by the way? And the birra moretti was flat. We were going to stay the night but after the meal and a room being nearly £200 a night we decided to travel back home 2 and half hours, hopefully things pick up. It’s a shame because the pub itself and where it is is class

Lovely place to stay. Lots of choice for breakfast and a good overall menu. Room tidy and clean. Would stay here again. Thank you.

This is a busy place and we were lucky to get a table. There is seating outside but it was cold and windy so not an option. The staff were friendly but not very well organised.

We visited the Red Lion last night as part of a weekend away in the Yorkshire Dales. First of all, we were very appreciative that, after calling ahead, they fitted us in an hour later than our reservation, owing to us being stuck in traffic...

What used to be one of my favourite spots in the Dales has fallen from grace. Food was poor and atmosphere was terrible

I went for lunch at the Red Lion with a group of friends. The food isn’t cheap, so we were looking forward to an above average meal. Portions were modest and rather variable, My husband said his veggie curry was very good, and two friends...

The staff were warm and friendly. When taking orders they couldn’t be more helpful, however having a diary allergy the menu was extremely restrictive with the kitchen not able to adjust any meals to substitute items to suit my diet was frustrating. Given the limited...

This cafe is awesome. I am gluten free and have not had such a wonderful meal for breakfast (party in my mouth). The staff are clean, tidy and polite, working hard to maintain timely arrival of meals. Inside cafe is tidy and clean. I will definitely be back tomorrow morning and hopefully Monday to. So much food that my son could not eat all his. Thank you for catering for my needs so wonderfully. April.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!

Having been here a few months ago and had an excellent meal, decided to travel from our home in Scarborough ,straight here for Sunday lunch in the hoe they could fit us in, my goodness so relieved when they found us a table.I ordered beef roast, husband had the turkey.Everything about the food was to die for! Beautiful Yorkshire puddings(massive) lovely and crisp.Roast potatoes (think a hint of garlic) red cabbage whole carrots cooked to perfection, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, and the most fantastic mash think with chive? not sure but out of this world(and I am not a fan of mash) Both meats cooked to perfection and so tasty as was the gravy. I cannot praise the chef/cook highly enough! wished we lived nearer!
