The team at this pub were absolutely SPOT ON tonight! We can’t thank them enough!!! We had booked in for a 60th wedding anniversary at a DIFFERENT pub. Table booked for 6pm. We arrived at 5.50pm to find the doors closed. No one had informed us that this pub had been closed down. We were all ready for a special family gathering but had nowhere to go! THE RED LION SAVED THE DAY and within 5 minutes they welcomed all 7 of us, had found us a perfect spot to eat and laid out a wonderful imaginary red carpet. Our parents (and the rest of us) LOVED everything about the evening! The anniversary couple, in their 80’s, complimented the wonderful attentive staff. They complimented the delicious home cooked food. They complimented the setting and the lovely “nook” we sat in (as they are hard of hearing, the nook was totally the right spot!) They complimented the care and love they felt from the owners. Sixty years married is a precious thing. We were let down at 5.50pm by the Shepherd’s Rest. Ten minutes later, 7 of us landed at this family run pub. They rolled out the imaginary red carpet for us and nothing was too much trouble. They literally all saved the day! The Kirks will be forever grateful to you We will be back and we will spread the word! This pub has the BEST hospitality around. The team were amazing. The family took over in 2020. Highly recommended! Five stars plus from us! Thank you so much

We held a large family gathering here as the pub was located centrally for everyone. We had a great night and the food was brilliant - all freshly cooked and all meats were lovely and tender; they have a good choice of beers too. The host was most obliging in accommodating a big party and the staff were really nice and very helpful. Will certainly come back for a meal - be it on a smaller scale next time!!

First time eating here. My experience wasn't great but ok. We were there for fathers day lunch.we. had Sunday lunch it was OK apart from the mash it was grey with black bits in it. Apart from that it was OK.the girls that served us were really smiling and attended to our needs.i was a bit mift with the young lad who was standing in the bar with his whites on. We were there for at least 2 hours and at one point he sat down talking. I might be wrong but didn't think kitchen staff were allowed in the bar with whites on. Just my opinion but we thought it was a bit unprofessional we would maybe come back and eat.

Have been to red lion on a few occasions & decided to meet up there because the food was always good.however we went on Saturday evening & it was terrible. The waitress brought wine glasses to the table with her fingers in them (which is not what you do) & they were disgusting very dirty so she took them washed them brought them back wet !! We weren’t told on producing the menus that there was no fish so all had to choose again, the food was not good at all standards have dropped badly. We waited an age for the waitress to come back for dessert orders. The staff in the whole place were very inexperienced at what they were doing.there was no background music & ambiance at all, Would never go back there again. Very disappointed indeed

We visited in mid July 2019. We had been going there quite frequently over the last year or so but the two lady Chefs who both serve up the best fish and chips you've ever tasted have gone, and the place has just fallen apart. Food terrible. Service appalling. Beer not kept right - dreadful! Don't know why the two lady Chefs are no longer there, but when I asked the Landlady she clearly didn't want to say anything, and gave me one of those sort of looks that says it all. My guess is the ladies couldn't work for her. I think this Landlady is new. Not that long ago the Manager of the Hayloft at Giltbrook took over. He was pretty useless at keeping beer but the two ladies stayed with him and continued to serve up good meals. We reckon he must have moved on and we've decided to do the same. We'll not be going back. Shame. I will miss my Halloumi Salads very much!

We were welcomed into the pub by a friendly and very polite waitress who showed us to our table. Having reviewed the menu the waitress took our food and drink order. The drinks arrived soon after and we weren't kept waiting much longer for the food. My wife enjoyed her lasagne and I my steak & kidney pie, both very tender. Neither of us were so keen on the chunky chips (mine had gravy on them) but we appreciate others may love them. Both meals were filling and neither of us could manage a dessert. We left satisfied.

Lovely little pub with great outdoor space to eat abd drink with a large outdoor space to keep the kids occupied. The menu has a great choice- we had the venison burger, hallumi and food from the 2 for £12.00 meals. All were great value, tasty and came out all together and didn't have to wait long at all. Good choices for vegetarians and the homemade chips are the tastiest we've had. The manager and bar staff are friendly, attentive and smiley. It is very dog friendly and not far off some great bike trail- so could imagine this would be a good stop off for mountain bikers and road cyclists too. Secure parking and not far from the motorway if you wanted to venture outside of Nottingham or Mansfield. A great find!

The staff seem a lot happier, the food since the refurb of the kitchen is absolutely amazing cannot fault it one bit. The whole atmosphere has totally changed since the previous landlord Noel was running it. He totally run this place into the ground and was a muppet!! Emily is really friendly and so are all the other staff they cannot do enough for you. We are regulars and have seen the changes. We came in sat afternoon to try the new menu and was not disappointed, 2 courses for £9.95 or 3 courses for £11.95. We had the 2 courses, homemade scotch eggs with sweet chilli dip then I had flat iron steak which came with onion rings, large mushroom, salad and hand cut chips which were divine. Hubby had same starter then chicken pie with chips and mushy peas and said it was the best meal he had eaten here. Daughter had fish goujons chips n beans which was massive for a kids dinner.10/10 overall and will definitely be returning.

Had a Christmas Fayre meal for a party of 4. Unfortunately when the starters came out, the soup was more or less cold! These were sent back to the kitchen and reappeared after a little wait piping hot. Unfortunately the remaining member of the group had by then consumed their starter, which was a very rubbery prawn cocktail! Mains came, but although quite satisfactory was unusual as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was served with stuffing and pigs in blankets! The highlight of the set meal were the sweets which were delicious on all counts. After the meal taking around 2 and a half hours to get this far, we declined coffee and mince pies and departed.

The pub has recently been bought by 'The Pub People' and as with any large chain they are looking at maximum profit. Unfortunately, the thing that made this pub was the quality home cooked food. Now, the chain are supplying the food, and its dire. The last time we visited, pre take over, the food was excellent and the pies home made, full of meat with perfect pastry etc. This has all changed. The pie, well I have had better from Iceland! The pastry was rock hard, and they call it a 'steak' pie, but only if you're lucky enough to get the slice with the bit of gristle in it, otherwise its tasteless gravy. The pate starter was cheap bog standard pate. Not the quality of before. The prawns were hard and rubbery. The chips were hard and under cooked. The whole meal was a disaster. The sad thing is, the staff have no control and are obviously embarrassed. You could see the frustration in the chefs with the rubbish that they are being forced to prepare. The new owners are doing a kitchen refit soon. Obviously to stock it with microwaves and deep fat fryers to serve the frozen tasteless plastic they call food. This is not the way to maximise profit in a pub like this. Which survives on its food. Which people make the effort to drive to for the standard of the food. I hate to say it, but you could get a far nicer meal from a Weatherspoons or similar now! That's how bad it is!!! And it would be a third of the price! If it doesn't change, I give it 6 months and they will have nice new sitex windows before it's turned into another childrens nursery or similar!!

Great quality steak cooked well with chunky chips, mushrooms and the only criticism, was slightly over done onion rings. Peppercorn sauce on side. Meeting a couple of friends not seen for a while, we decided to lunch at the Red Lion. The service was excellent (though we arrived early just after Noon), we all ordered fish and chips, which looked really nice, though the fish was watery and tasteless. Unfortunately, neither the chef nor the waitress warned me that the fish had not been filleted (something which I have not experienced for a long time) and I swallowed a bone, so here I am, four days on, wondering whether I should visit A&E or not because I still have pain on swallowing, not only in the throat but halfway down to the stomach. Please, when serving fish, make sure it is filleted properly or warn the diner that he/she may find bones.

Iv have been going to the red lion for the best part of 25 years, as a child I always remember how much fun the park was, which still is for the kids. The place is set in the sleepy village of bagthorpe, a lovely place to call by for pint after a summer stroll. The restaurant is quite small so I would always recommend calling to book instead of just turning up. Particularly if you have a large party. Iv had lots of fantastic meals here I won't lie, but up until the last time I went the quality of food was going downhill. The nail in the coffin for us is when my partner, daughter and I went for a meal and we all had a burger, (usually good) we were basically served with black and blue burgers, which is a burger with blue Stilton cheese as topping. This was not what we ordered and I called the waitress over to return them. They took the two wrong burgers back then served us with the correct order. The sad thing was they had just scraped the cheese off the beef and changed it for the correct topping. Now it's common knowledge that blue cheese is particularly strong and even though the cheese had been removed the taste was just over powering. This for me is incredibly bad practice and a good restaurant would make you fresh meal from scratch. It was totally unacceptable and when I confronted the staff they were very unsympathetic but didn't deny what they had done and still charged me for the full meal, which two of were left due to fowl taste! After the fiasco of sending it back we were not prepared to wait for a third time. We were not even offered our drinks on the house as gesture of good will.I have recommended the red lion to many friends and family who all are in agreement that quality of the food has gone downwards. The saga with the burgers left us quite literally with a "bitter taste in our mouths" and I have never been back. Maybe I'll give them another chance sometime, this was over a year ago but as I am new to trip advisor I thought I would still review based on my experience as I feel as we were treated awfully and robbed of good earned money over a very substandard meal and pitiful service on that occasion. It just goes to show how one bad service can crush almost a life time of custom. I hope things have changed!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I have visited here with my family on countless occasions over the years. Having not eaten here for six months or so I decided to check it out on trip advisor as I was tempted by The White Lion in the next village. Recent reviews aren't all great but we went anyway! A table for 6 people was booked for 5.30 and when we got there there was one member of staff serving behind the bar and 6 people waiting to be served. We eventually got some drinks and advised which table was for us. It was available but not set for 6. It took some time for our order to be taken and whilst waiting for food another visit was made to the bar as we weren't asked at all at the table if we would like drinks. We were short changed at the bar which then required another visit to the bar where it was rectified. The food which was only gammon steaks, fish, a burger and a children's meal, took 45 minutes to arrive. We were very restless by this point and almost ready to leave. At no point did anyone visit the table to advise us of the long wait. It wasn't particularly busy with only one or two other tables seated indoors and a few outside. When the food eventually arrived it was all hot, good size portions and it was nice food. That was the only saving grace! When the bill arrived we were charged for an extra meal which we did not order. This was then another problem we had to sort out at the bar which again was very busy. I would not return here again for food as the general place has gone very down hill, the service is awful and the place could do with a could revamp. I am not normally very critical on my reviews but We won't be back!

I have eaten at this pub several times before and altho' it is expensive it is usually worth it, that was until last Thursday night. I ordered a Special which took over half an hour to be served (the pub was not busy at the time) and when it came it was VERY ordinary and not what it said it was going to be on the Specials board - the meat was not a pork loin as stated, it was a very small portion of meat and looked like a chop with the bone removed if I'm honest, it was also supposed to have 'Cidre jus' but came with tasteless gravy. For £14.95 it was ridiculously expensive and we will not be going back again anytime soon - not at all impressed!!

We were in the area and spotted this little pub. It is very cosy inside and the staff were friendly to us. We decided to stay for some food as it wasn't that busy. The food was absolutely stunning. You get more than enough and the home made chips are gorgeous. I don't usually waste food but had to because you get alot of everything. Best pub grub I've ever had. Will take a picture on my next visit.

Visited several times, mainly lunchtimes but some evenings. The place is a real curiosity, it "looks" like a quaint, cosy old village pub, but when you look closely it is - in my view - dark and dingy and decades out of date in furnishing. It is also crying out for a complete "steam clean", a lot of the fixtures and fittings look physically dirty and as has been said before the toilets are a real concern ( Well, the male one is ) It doesn't open all day, it doesn't even open every day, and on two Saturdays there has been no-one else dining at lunchtime, so quite how it manages to survive is, frankly, a puzzleHowever........good choice of locally brewed beers, and the food is quite excellent, freshly cooked, hot and plentiful. They even do that rare thing these days of offering a "smaller" portion, at reduced price, of about 2/3rds of the main meals, and these smaller portions are still substantial. So, overall, great food and drink and very good value but the actual fabric of the place is depressing and I really dread to think when it last had an actual clean

I've been to the red lion a few times. The food is mostly good, as was the Sunday dinner which we had, but, it doesn't seem to be consistently good and has been disappointing on occasion. The pub it's self is lovely. Nice garden if you have kids, they can run amok.Toilets could do with a spot of deep cleaning and maybe some proper locks on the ladies toilet doors.

Visited after a long break, and delighted that better than ever.Staff were friendly, efficient, and attentive, with good knowledge of the menu, and really proactive in ensuring our experience was excellent. The rump steaks were magnificent and the best I've had in a long time. Peppercorn sauce was delicious although I'd have liked a little more.Pub was friendly and a lovely atmosphere, and we enjoyed a chat and jokes with the next table. Great beer too!

locally sourced food. Is great to see a pub working with nearby farmers. Good service with reasonable value food. Might not have been the cheapest sausage and mash but it was most definitely the best - a great idea of three different flavours - all made locally. Beautiful. I will be back

Nice Food and a decent price. the service was nice and friendly but there was a few things that looked to require a bit more attention. the floor and a few of the seats seemed dirty and cobwebs above the tables gave the feeling it could do with a proper spring clean. The toilets were disappointing and definitely cost this place a lower level rating as they were generally cold and had a almost public toilet standard. which is a shame. Food was nice though and decent staff seemed to know what they were doing which was nice.

The Red Lion is one of our favourite places to eat out despite being 40 minutes drive away from home. We have celebrated many occasions at this pub and each time the food was delicious. Mid range prices and generous portions althouth it appears they had a change of staff and the services isnt as good as it was a year or so ago. Make sure you book in advance as it can be hard to get a table, Limited vegetarian options and peskatarian dishes are often ruined by coming with parma ham but if you ask satff they normally are able to offer you somethig off the menu. We would recomend forb a guaranteed enjoyable night. Always look forward to coming back.

I visited The Red Lion with a group of lads from a nearby Round Table, and the food, beer, and service were all excellent. I ordered the steak and ale pie, which was quite nice. Looking forward to another visit for Sunday roast with the family.

Mr T had organised a meal here with friends & family as a surprise treat on my birthday, we hadn't visited before. This is a typical country pub, it wasn't full by any means but enough folk were eating even on a Tuesday night in January for it to have a nice atmosphere.Only a couple of young serving staff were on duty but they coped well and were efficient.Food was nice but Mr T thought it was a bit on the expensive side for what it was.Would happily eat here again and it is quite close to home.

This is another of my favourites that seems to be letting it's self down recently. They don't have much choice of drinks. Cocktails would go down great there. We went for food last week and the service from the blonde lady was fab but the young brunette was very rude and abrupt. I see from previous reviews I'm not the only one to think this. I had pork belly and I struggled cutting it. It was so tough. It might of helped if I got more sauce but there were literally 3 drops round the side. My partners duck was nice so it's a shame. Childrens meal didn't come with veg so I had to ask for it

Have been coming to this place for a few years now, but our most recent visit was really nothing to write home about. The staff all appeared to be very young & inexperienced. The food was OK as opposed to previously being fantastic, for higher priced pub grub we expected better. The most disappointing aspect though, was the ladies loos. The door going in is Filthy, sticky & actually made me feel a bit queasy after putting my hand on it. The sinks were blocked & the floor was dirty.I Always judge a places hygiene by the state of the toilets. Kind of wondered what the kitchen was like...A shame, we'd bought 5 family members with us & had always, previously raved about the place.Sort it out guys.

There were 10 adults and 1 infant within our party last night and had the most enjoyable night celebrating a very special birthday. The food was second to none and to say we were a table of 11 the service was excellent, and the quality of the food was outstanding (wish we could go again today). The prices were very reasonable as well which made the food taste even nicer, and the fizz Friday prosecco for £10 went down a treat. The atmosphere is so homely and the staff are lovely and very friendly. We were extremely shocked when we found out the there was only one chef on, because like I said the food was second to none and for one person to be able to cook 11 starters and mains to that standard is crazily talented. To show our appreciation we bought the chef 3 drinks for him to have at his leisure as I can imagine chefs don't get many tips. I can't wait to go again, so will be returning very soon.

Don't want to express how good this place is too much because I want it to remain the great Country Pub it is (for selfish reasons)Following a rather damming review I want to reassure anyone thinking of dinning here to come along. The service is excellent and at times can be a little slow based on how busy the restaurant is. The food however is classic country home made food, there is a specials board with anything from game pie to venison. They serve the best Sunday dinner within 15 miles at a fantastic price of £7.95, extra gravy or vegetables no extra charge. All the staff are extremely friendly. The only negative is the toilets require some attention.Keep up the good work, we will be back several times before Christmas

First visit for us, along with a group of friends, for a prebooked Sunday lunch. Very busy, but we were served promptly, all 10 meals arriving together, hot and well cooked. Just missed out on an "excellent" rating from us as we were not offered sauces at the time of serving, and had to ask, and also coffee at the end took a bit of time to arrive. However it was a very busy Sunday Lunchtime . The pub itself is very "Olde Worlde" with a great atmosphere and good facilities, plenty of room around the tables and good car parking and outside areas, including a play area for children

Many years when our kids were young we would eat at the Red Lion with friends and their kids and the food was very good with large portions and decent value for money. We always have a good time and would visit at least once a month even though it was a 10 mile drive. We decided to go back this Saturday with the same friends (but without kids or adults as they appear to be now!!)The pub hadnt changed at all, the car park was almost empty and the interior decor and menu didnt look like they had changed in the last 15 years and we assumed the worst but went ahead and orderedThe starters arrived quickly and was very tasty again with large portions (my breaded mushrooms could have fed a junior rugby team), the mains and puddings were also very nice and large and the final bill was very reasonable Dont know why the pub isnt busy all the time at weekends as the only other pub in the village closed last year I understandWe were very pleasantly superprised and will visit again

For a reunion of friends on Saturday evening 10th October 2015 I booked us the Red Lion, Bagthorpe, a village outside Nottingham, in Nottinghamshire.I live locally and have used this pub restaurant many times in the past. I used it last November (on a Tuesday night when it wasn't busy) for my birthday and was disappointed then with the service and food; so I haven't wanted to take friends or family there for a long while... well almost a year later I thought, let's try again. It was awful, I was ignored at the bar when trying to get drinks... all the girls were chatting. The food was diabolical, people's orders were wrong - despite my going to great lengths, as requested, to provide a pre-order via email for our group. The lamb rumps were great apparently and so was the medium sirloin, but my fish was dry and no sign of a Veloute sauce. I had requested salad for myself instead of chips or potatoes but it came with potatoes! Had to again ask for the salad, it then came back on a piping hot plate with salad and two bits of dry fish draped over the salad.. the salad was cooked, wilted and sticking to the very hot plate by this time!Chicken was dry, service was sloppy and guests were disappointed!!! To say the least!
