The Red Lion in Oxford

The dirtiest place I’ve ever been in the UK in the 10+ years. The garden tables were all dirty, greasy with leftover food, we had to pick one and clean it ourselves. Leftover glasses weren’t picked up, we received no napkins, and waited for the food 30+ minutes despite being fairly empty and not busy at all. I had to remind them for the food to get it. Food itself not great too.

Had lunch here when visiting Oxford. The pork belly was absolutely delicious, the scallops a worthy addition, but the goat's cheese and white crab sourdough weren't so impressive. Good white wine selection, would have been nice to have had some local beer on tap. Effort has been put into the decor, definitely a nice spot.

Lovely place. Good food. Staff friendly. Just wish they didn't shut so early in the week as we were hoping to have a night cap after a show around the corner at the theatre but were closing up by 10.

The service is pretty terrible. I went there on Easter Day and stopped in for some drinks. I stood at the counter for 17 mins, repeatedly requesting a drink, but no one served me. They simply avoid eye contact and appear to be busy with themselves. This isn't the same beloved spot it once was for me.

We had an amazing bottomless bubbles in The Red Lion, oxford. Jess our server was friendly and attentive and kept the bubbles flowing. The food was delicious. Would highly recommend.

The level of service and quality of food has deteriorated in the past year. The pub wasn't very busy for a Saturday, based on previous experiences. There was a lot of waiting and the bar; the staff seemed slow and the food was quite boring. Very disappointing as this was one of our favourite pubs, so we're hoping it was a glitch.

Great experience. Lovely atmosphere, excellent drinks, food and dessert. The steak Malbec pie was beautiful and very tasty. Samuel was terrific! He was very personable and kind. Great service! I highly recommend!

Had the fish and chips portion was great, the young man at the bar was a good laugh

Tried banana blossom. It tasted very bad and couldn’t eat more than 2 bites. Very slow service as well.

Absolutely beautiful pub heck ladies rest room stupping

So that artisan bread came out and was two pieces of toast and three spoonfuls of dip for nearly £7, then the soup I ordered the bowl was only a third full again £7. Only good thing was the wine.

There were a group of around 20 men who were shouting and singing football chants and security were just allowing them to do so. Made the experience sitting in the gardens uncomfortable. When approaching the bar, the barman ignored us to serve these men, presumably to get them served quicker to allow them to leave the bar area so to not cause any more aggro to other guests, but this was at the expense of us who were just there for a quiet Saturday afternoon drink

We met our Australian family over for a few days it was a first class place to meet up, the staff were lovely and very helpful and the meal we had was just right, everyone enjoyed our time there and we all would recommend the Red Lion as a place to visit if you go to Oxford. Thanks for making our day extra special xxx

Honestly I have to say it was just such a fabulous time & Experience (From start to finish) . I believe the young man who made it so exceptional was name : Oliver strode. Such an exemplary employee and really does honour to the pub by working there. Must I say some of the most exceptional front of house skills I have ever experienced in my 5 years in industry .

Went to the Red Lion yesterday for some food with my family. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. One of the members of staff- Erin, was exceptional. She brought our food out and engaged in some great conversation with me and family. Funny, Bubbly and made everyone giggle. You can really tell how good she is at her job and obviously enjoys it. Overall the food and service was amazing. The actual venue itself was fabulous, very warm and welcoming. 5 ⭐️ - would recommend to anyone wanting some food in oxford!!

We had a hen doo with 18 women for bottomless bubbles this weekend and our server Alison was absolutely fantastic. She made sure we were never long without a drink and the food included was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend and thank you Alison for making our day so great!

Booked due having visited on two previous occasions for lunch and cocktails. Food has been outstanding on all visits and taken a different guest each time, who can’t wait to return! Staff polite and attentive . Appeared very understaffed between 12.30 and 1.30 but they were not phased and apologised for keeping customers waiting and continued to serve with a smile. Fortunately the customers felt for them and did not become annoyed on this occasion. Another pair of hands or two would not have gone amiss. Did not deter from our enjoyment and plan to return again in a few weeks Thank you for your lovely hospitality 😊

Great food and relaxing atmosphere; the building is impressive. My only complaints are the men's toilets have a sickly sweet, almost rancid smell and one of the waitresses walks around with an expression like she has a nasty smell in her nostrils.

Our meal (meat trio) was lovely and tasty, my husband liked the beer and I loved the passion fruit cocktail. A bit pricey (we paid £ 37 for one meal and two drinks) but nice, warm, and comfortable. I even liked the ladies´ loo, it looked very trendy ;-)

We had a lovely evening made even better by Vivienne the waitress who paid great attention to us and made us feel special. The food was lovely and we had a really good evening.

Interesting meal. The roast was barely warm but pleasant staff sorted that. The pavlova came with the staffs pets. Two ants were having a good roam round.

The perfect way to start the spring. Lovely Saturday afternoon spent in this pub. The food was absolutely delicious (crispy duck salad & cholcolate bomb) and the service was incredible. Staff were able to explain the dishes very accurately and recommend food that definitely exceeded our expectations. The service was quicker than I expected especially for a Saturday, which was great for us as we had a lot of places to visit. I would definitely recommend to try this pub wether you are with your friends or want to organize an event because the venue is absolutely brilliant and has a lot of seating spaces. Looking forward to coming back.

The traditional decor, with its dark wood furnishings and soft lighting, creates the perfect atmosphere for an evening of relaxation. The food is seriously good. Trust me, you won't leave hungry or disappointed!!!!!

I liked this pub. Not too cramped and nicely done. The food was decent and staff friendly. They are a bit short staffed behind the bar but certainly a good spot for lunch in Oxford centre.

The food were really good! Especially The scallops were fresh & well cooked - soft and tender. Pie is delicious. The space is nicely decorated. The reason for 2 stars atmosphere is due to a weird kind of toilety smell on the ground floor when I entered. Otherwise the rating would have gone up to 4.

If you enjoy being yelled at and threatened by terrible, impatient and rude security staff while you put your coat on to leave at closing time, this is a must go. Destroy your night at your own risk.

A4 Paper menus - bad, service staff unknowledgeable about menu. Food dreadful which subsequently makes it very overpriced

Erin was incredible, I had the Seafood linguine, absolutely smashing, beyond my wildest dreams I loved it, my bf had the Pie n mash, clear plates all around 100% impeccable food and service

15 minutes prior to the listed closing time, the security came up to us and started screaming for us to get out while we were literally putting on our coats to leave. I told him to chill that we were putting on our coats and he ran up to me screaming "don't tell me to chill" and threatened to fight me. I said he needed to have some respect towards people and not yell at them and his mate (pictured) decided to shove me as I had one foot out of the door. I called the manager and he said the security said I said to 'f-k off' (which is a blatant lie) and they had every right to do what they did. I am astonished at this entire series of events and encourage everyone to find a place where you are treated with dignity, which obviously not here.
