What an amazing gem! I can't believe I've past this cracking little Pub & B&B so many times. Steve, the host was great and couldn't do enough for us and Lucy's cooking awesome. I went with my dog Reuben (and yes the dog got treats). Had 2 evening meals and both were spot on! As for the breakfast "Oh my Lord" it kept me going all day long. A great selection of beers, I particularity enjoyed the Great Corby stout! Decor wise, it was spotless, all looked fresh but its been just a couple of years since it was done, the shower was equal to any posh grade hotel! Just sorry I missed the acoustic session which was the previous week. I'll definitely be returning, might even treat the wife!

We called in here for an evening meal just last Thursday. The traditional pub had a warm, welcoming feel and was well-maintained and quite apparently well-run. I enjoyed the "Flat Cap" bitter served here. The evening menu was reassuringly short - not too many options. I went for the battered fish with chips and mushy peas. Very nice. For dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding with cream. . Equally good. I liked the fact that we did not have to endure an interminable wait before our orders arrived at the table. All in all a very pleasant dining experience..

Lucy and Steve provided us with a first class stay. Excellent communication from initial enquiry to leaving this morning. Our initial party of 3 grew to 6 & a dog! They went the extra mile - even letting us know that our dogs cuddly toy monkey was left behind! Clean comfortable rooms, super tasty food and we all enjoyed a very hearty full english & vegatarian breakfast (thanks Lucy!) Dog friendly with biscuits was a bonus. The beer garden looked lovely, it was a little too chilly to sit out this time - we will be back again! Top class - thank you for looking after us all so well.

Lovely little pub only a couple of miles from Coniston lake. Me and my partner had been paddle boarding on the lake for the afternoon and wanted to grab some tea from somewhere afterwards. We just searched pubs near us and this one came up as the closest. It was a lovely little pub, very warm and welcoming atmosphere and the food was to die for. It was a lovely range of options on the menu, something suitable for everyone. The staff were so lovely and efficient. The portion sizes are huge, especially for the inexpensive prices!! Couldn’t recommend the Red Lion enough. Well worth a visit to end a nice day in the lakes!

Well situated for walks or drives in one of the many nearby beautiful hills and valleys like around lake Coniston, through the Duddon valley or over the forest parks to the east. Rooms are fairly basic but clean and have everything you need. Good value for money. Relax in the bar after the day's activities with a pint of the local ale. Food is good, pub grub style. I had the ribs which were nice. Breakfasts are good, and great if you're going walking all day. Packed lunches available too, just ask.

A pleasant enough atmosphere with friendly service. The food wasn't enough to complain about at the time but on reflection we did feel like we left the pub feeling a bit ripped off. The ribs with chips were that, and that only. Just red hot ribs on a plate with no form of trimmings or garnish and a bowl of pale chips that had clearly come straight out of a freezer. My partners ham salad included two slices of ham (which was nice) but nothing more than mixed leaves, yellow pepper and four or five cherry tomatoes cut in half. I've had better side salads served with a sandwich. We've eaten at two other pubs during this weeks holiday in the local area and both were so much better for a similar price. We wouldn't return.

I'm shaking my head because I can't believe the food reviews on here for this little dated pub. Honestly the pictures tell the story, what they don't say is that the food is earth's core hot and totally tasteless. All I can say was the chef was having a day off and they resorted to raiding the freezer. Reviews must be based on quantity of food not quality. Couple of concessions the beer and location are very nice and the barman did deduct the 10.95 off my bill for my inedible fish pie. I'd advise them to step away from the freezer and use good fresh local ingredients, FGS it's Cumbria.

We stayed at Lowick Bridge in March 2018 for 4 days 5 nights. Our cottage was just around the corner from the Red Lion (literally a 2 minute walk) which was extremely handy when we fancied a drink after a long day trekking. Arrived late, but my reserved table was kept so was still able to enjoy the well cooked and presented meal, with a good variety of drink, whether beer, wine or spirits, especially whiskies. My only problem, arriving with a cold which developed to apoint where I couldn't enjoy the food and drink on second evening, or the excellent full English the second morning. Called in on the offchance, 2 adults, 1 child, 2 dogs and we were put in the 'back room' because of the dogs. The Back Room was tired and dingy but seemed clean enough and was empty other than ourselves. The main bar was busier, probably 20 people and a dog in there, but not sure why we got stuck in the back room as there was room up front. Ordered food and it came in a reasonable time. I had ribs and chips. The ribs were exactly the same as the ones I get at Lidl or Aldi for 2 pounds something and came with a bowl of chips (frozen type) No salad, no veg, just ribs n chips. It was 'ok' but I could have cooked it at home myself for about 3 quid so you kind of feel ripped off when you go out and pay 12 or 13 pounds for the same thing (cant remember the price exactly)Hubby had pie - which was a dish of pie filling with a circle of puff pastry on top. Came with chips, peas and carrots. Again, he said it was ok but nothing special.Daughter has the obligatory chicken nuggets and chips - she like the nuggetsas they were 'real' chicken and not the nasty floor sweepings type. We shared a couple of puddings - hot sponge with ice cream and they were rather nice, better than the mains. The meal was alright, there was nothing wrong with it as such, it just wasnt special. Aldi ribs and chips I can do at home on a wet Tuesday, lol ...... when I go out and pay my hard earned money for a treat I expect to eat something I couldn't/wouldn't do at home. I wouldn't go back.

We turned up at this pub a little off track on the Cumbrian Way. Steve the publican was charming and very kind with a typically British sense of humour. We rested our legs for a half an hour, enjoying a restorative drink and engaging conversation. Without us asking, Steve offered to drive us a couple of miles down the road, to get us back on track. That is why English pubs are so special, because they are run by good natured, good humoured, considerate English gentlemen. We used to come to this pub regularly around 20 years ago when were on holiday in the Lake District with our parents, the food then was excellent. Now 20 years on and spending another holiday in the area with our parents for a family celebration, my family decided to eat here once more, we were not disappointed! We tried to book the table earlier that day but as there was no answer on the phone, we visited the pub. The staff were very welcoming and said that it would be absolutely no problem to cater for 6 adults, 2 children and 1 baby. There was a wide menu of both starters, mains and desserts and the children were very happy with the children's menu too. Two of the adults had starters and the staff were happy to bring the childrens' meals at the same time. We were all very pleased with the quality of the food, the fish and chips are enormous and very good value! Unfortunately we could not manage a dessert as we were too full! We will definitely return here if we are in the area again.

We stayed nearby and visited the pub on three evenings. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we particularly enjoyed their music evening when locals came and played instruments and sang. Great fun! The food was served quickly and was traditional pub food with huge portions.Comfortable with log fire. Philip was very good humoured and attentive.

For the last holiday of the year, we, of course, stayed at the usual Crake Valley SiteThis is only a couple of miles from The Red Lion, so we called in most nights to see all our local friends.Steve and Lucy were unfortunately away on holiday, but we were looked after by the very professional Philip. As usual, the beer / wine and food were excellent, the portions being enormousWill be back there in The Spring

Very Enjoyable. Stayed here for over two weeks when working in the area in July. Pleasant pub with friendly and attentive staff. Steve & his wife are making a great attempt at maintaining a village pub atmosphere with a music evening & friendly locals. Used 2 of the 3 rooms which were both comfortable & adequate when working away. Always clean & with fresh biscuits etc. each day. Even bought my wife to stay over a long weekend who was made very welcome by villagers & staff. Good beer & food (excellent beef pie & ditto fish meal). Breakfasts a must. Steve, I hope you have now purchased the Pub from Robinson's. Look forward to a return trip sometime & sample the well kept beers. I will be back. Regards P

While on a Stagg do in the lakes last week, we found ourselves on Saturday night in need of something to eat. After a couple of negative responses from other establishments, when we called the Red Lion and asked if 14 of us could role up at short notice for food we weren't very hopeful. The Landlord said he was sure he could manage it though and proved true to his word. Very tasty fish and chips for me, I think we had one of most things on the menu between us and everyone was more than satisfied. Great local beers, friendly staff (despite our high spirits) and very tasty food. All together a great evening out and a pub I would return to if I am in the area again.

My wife and I recently spent the night at the Red Lion on our way up to Wasdale for the weekend. It was exactly what we wanted. Our room was lovely with a great view over the fells from our window, and a nice modern bathroom too. The food in the bar was fantastic and both my Lasagne and my Wifes Fish n Chips were both delicious and also nice large portions. They also had some local Ales on too which were very nice. Breakfast was also very enjoyable, and once again, plenty of it !Steve, the owner, was a very nice chap and the staff were friendly and helpful too. We would recommend the Red Lion to anyone who fancies a trip to a proper Lakeland Inn with some great food and drink, and warm hospitality ! We can't wait to go back !

A group of 20 of us were camping near the Red Lion over the first bank holiday weekend. We started by meeting at the Red Lion for lunch on the Saturday and enjoyed proper pub food done well and a really warm welcome from Steve the landlord - I enjoyed some fantastic Whitby scampi and chips and there was a host of other traditional meals on the menu that looked equally great. We returned the next day, en masse, to use the Red Lion's back room to host a singing lesson and enjoy a second meal of really great simple sandwiches, (fresh prawn, ham off the bone, local cheese), salad and chips which Steve had all ready for us at a really reasonable price too! This was especially welcome given the weather was pretty miserable that weekend and we were able to settle in for the afternoon for a great sing a long - we were kept fuelled after lunch with some brilliant ales on taps, good house wines and delicious hot chocolate.I would definitely go back and next time would look at staying in one of the rooms, whilst I didn't see them, they seemed a great price and also the pub itself is simple but well kept and clean and warm which I am sure is an indicator that the rooms are of similar quality.Thank you Red Lion!

We have just returned from a visit to the lakes on what turned out to be a beautiful Easter break. We popped in to The Red Lion on Good Friday for a lunchtime pint and sandwich whilst we waited for our cottage check in time. Great pub and friendly staff who were very welcoming to a somewhat rowdy and excitable group of 12 adults and 4 dogs! We were so impressed with the service that we booked a table for Sunday evening. The food did not disappoint, the portions were huge and excellent value for money, we would definitely call in again if we were back in the area. Thank you to Stephen for making us all feel so welcome.

Excellent pub a mile off the CW route and well worth the extra 20 min diversion. Lovely rooms, excellent food, a really warm welcome and delicious breakfasts The chef is a treasure ! We would recommend this pub to anyone who wants a good nights sleep, good beer and a belly full of excellent local food. We walked the CW form Carlisle to Ulverston so this was our last night stop over. Can recommend a final drink in Ulverston at the Rose and Crown in Kings Street - a tiny old boozer with an amazing open fire in the right hand snug....and excellent beer and food

The Red Lion has a nice atmosphere, friendly staff and locals, and excellent food. Sadly, being located in something of a backwater, it seems to lack sufficient regular diners. As a result it's superb Sunday Roasts are no longer available. Fortunately, it's a la carte menu offers a good choice of tasty, competitively priced dishes which are cooked to order. We understand that the landlord is about to purchase the Inn; it is to be hoped that he gets all the support he deserves from both local diners and visitors to the Lake District.

I have stopped in the pub and stayed over night on a number of occasions and I have found the food, drink and hospitality to be excellent. However I read with interest the Trip Advisor comment of the 24th August 2013 and I find a number of the comments to distort the facts as I was sat at the table next to the bar as the situation unfolded. I agree there was an error of £30 on the bill, purely an arithmetic error which was acknowledged within minutes with unreserved apologies. I have had ribs on a number of occasions and the meat simply falls off the bone! I agree that there is no salad or veg with this meal but the menu but doesn't say it does come with salad and veg. The meal is so big it comes on two plates! The situation did not take 30 mins to resolve, more like 3 or 4mins. Every time I have stayed there within a few minutes of my meal arriving I get asked is everything ok with the meal. If the pizza was burnt the lady in question could have passed comment but did not.

Reserved a table and things went done fro here. The food was mediocre at best - one daughter had burnt pizza, the other dreadful lasagne, absolutely shocking, I had overdone ribs with no salad or veg, my friends meals were no better. When I asked for the bill I was overcharged by £30 - the staff then refused to believe that they had overcharged us - and it took half an hour to resolve. Never a single apology or any sign that the customer should receive good service - just a bemused bloke behind the bar who clearly couldn't work a basic calculator. The worst bar meal I have ever had. Ever!

Good basic food. Simple bar meals but filling. Local pub for local people, don't think they get many tourists as off the beaten track, however they were very friendly people.

Unexpected great meal at off the beaten track location. Eight adults and five children were catered for without fuss. Staff were great and took children's orders first to avoid delays. Highlights were the BBQ ribs and Cumberland sausage which was served with a huge Yorkshire pudding. Kids lasagne fab, adult veg lasagne even better. Kids ice cream was also eaten by the adults, it was that good. Belgian toffee waffle and chocolate pudding also great. A great find.

We had booked a table for 10 of us for a family reunion. Very friendly greeting when we arrived on a very wet day indeed. The whole back room had been reserved for us, which was great. The menu, although perhaps not adventurous, was great value. And the food was all homemade and well cooked. My chilli con carne, was really nicely spiced and the chocolate pudding was to die for. Everyone enjoyed the dishes they ordered. The dog was allowed to wander around, getting attention from the locals. A great location and family lunch on an otherwise miserable day. Ticked all the boxes.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

My husband and I were staying at the nearby county hotel and decided to call in for a coffee on the way into the shopping area. The coffee was great and the millionaires slice was lovely. Service was very good.
