Disappointing food and disappointing service. Food took 45 minutes to arrive despite being averagely busy at best. No starters. When it did arrive it was cold and frankly just poor quality. Told the young woman working who seemed less than bothered but she did ask if we wanted it replaced. Having waited as long as we had we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Looking at previous reviews it seems this is a common occurrence but then these reviews are pushed down by many good reviews in quick succession… might it be time to address the problems rather than hiding them? Overall really disappointed and have been coming here years.

We had family visiting from London so chose The Red Lion to have our catch up and sunday lunch. Having been here a couple of times before we knew we wouldn't be disappointed! When we arrived at 12.20pm the pub was quite quiet but by 1pm it was heaving! Luckily this didnt have an affect on the speed of the kitchen as our 7 main meals all came within 30 minutes of ordering. The bar service was a little slower but to be expected when they were as busy as they were! Food was all lovely and everyone enjoyed their meals. Portion sizes are absolutely huge, very generous.

The burger was dry. When asking what pie of the day was informed steak and ale but came out as chicken. When queried this the staff did asked to change but didn’t want to wait. She did say she would come back and let us know why wrong pie but never did. To be honest put us off ordering deserts which is a shame

Shockingly slow service. Food was hot and tasty but had to wait over an hour for it - and we were not the only ones in a pub that was at best 50% full inside with no one outside. Nobody asked us if we wanted more drinks. Most tables were sat with empty glasses. We stopped by on the way past but really wished we hadn’t. Lovely staff but clearly have not been well trained.

The good: The staff are truly amazing. For young staff, they were really attentive and happy to help. The setting is also beautiful, lots of parking and you also have the ability to have a private room for functions. The Prawn cocktail was really lovely, decent size and tasty. Please see the ugly for the bread. The bad: Mix up in orders (even though we had to do a preorder). Food also not available despite doing a preorder! The ugly: Children's starters. Carrot and pepper crudités. No peppers, carrots cooked?! Who serves cooked carrot sticks as a crudité?! Bread. Stale. Must have been cut in the morning and left on the side. This was served with the soup and prawn cocktail. Fish and chips. Fish burnt and small size. Definitely not worth £17. "Triple cooked chips". Definitely not. Some were served cold, not what you'd expect if they were straight out the fryer. Steak. Grisly. Small. Underwhelming. Chicken. Served partially raw. This was refunded in full and starter given for free in fairness. Chocolate brownie. Extremely dark chocolate and crumbly. Not the texture you'd expect for a brownie. I would describe the entire meal as barely adequate. They are advertising their Christmas menu currently. If it carries on like that I genuinely think your Christmas would be ruined! Either that or they half the price of everything as you are paying top whack price for mediocre food. We should have known something wasn't quite right when there were only a few tables at the pub, for a Friday night! I hope it picks up and gets better as it would be such a shame to see the place go. As I said before, the location and staff are great but the chef needs letting go!

This restaurant failed miserably when we visited for a family Sunday three course dining experience despite it beautiful setting the starters were adequate at least Bt all the main courses were absolutely diabolical the matured roast beef was slimy and cold not adequately cooked in fact was absolutely revolting never in 45 years of dining out have we ever had such a pitiful dinner placed in front of us the vegetables were freezing sparse and not appetising at all the soles of our shoes would have been more appetising to eat than the dried up foul excuse of the roast potatoes and the Yorkshire’s puddings the gravy was abismal too any chef working there should hang their head in shame at plating and sending out such disgusting slop….. we raised our concerns with the waitress and then the manageress who apologised profusely adding that there had been other complaints and they were not serving any further Sunday fare and refunded the cost of our mains we had booked dessert but on the strength of the pitiful. Mains we also cancelled the desserts as we felt physically sickened …. Such a dissapointment and the family meal experience ruined we paid for the starters we had and requested to have the chef brought to the table to try to give an explanation why he felt it was appropriate to serve such poor gayer but he didn’t appear alas so myself and guests dissapointed my left. I’d not wish a similar dining experience on my worst enemy

It would have been 5 stars but there were a few problems with our order . We chose this pub as it was a favourite of my late father in law . We have been a few times but it has changed . We had a lovely get together with the family 18 of us & had our own private room . The staff were very attentive & the decor was beautiful. But there was a mix up with the orders , which were rectified. Another issue was my steak was very gristly , fish was overcooked & the kids orders came out wrong . Felt I needed to say this as I’ve worked in this trade & they probably needed more help in the kitchen . Food overall was good just a few minor issues, I will go back again as usually the steaks are delicious, but not as a large group as I’m not sure they could cope . Staff are very friendly & we had a lovely time which made up for it .

I only had 1 glass. on choosing another gin was told they had no gin glasses left. it was fairly empty at the time. food well over priced for basic food. menus very poor. seems to me it is being run on a shoe string budget . either that or the bailiffs have visited. Will not be going back until new owners have restored this once vibrant pub but to its former glory

For us this is a very Local pub, and as it had changed hands we thought we would give it a try. What a disappointment ! Firstly a very poor welcome, we had booked a table outside only to be told first come first served. The table wasn’t cleared or cleaned. Menus were brought, could we have one GF menu please. After a long wait one of our number went to the bar and fetched it, a scrappy menu with option for GF scrawled on it in biro! The menu was very poor, unimaginative, limited and virtually nothing GF. Specials perhaps? Curried parsnip soup (very hot day!)Moules (all finished at 6.30 pm) and Rump steak! By this time it was obvious that customer service was not a priority, food choices were dull and the atmosphere was take it or leave it…so we did. We won’t be bothering again. Once upon a time this was a pub to be reckoned with, sadly no longer the case.

Table next to us had 3/4 meals bought out and then had to wait ages for their child’s meal to come. There was no roast beef or cauliflower cheese by 5:15pm and obviously they were rationing the roast chicken which was half a breast of chicken and 2 drumsticks for my husband. The only available desserts were sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. Prices of drinks were expensive.

We came here for my mum in law’s birthday, we were met by the host with a disapproving look as she spotted our baby in her pram and she told me off in front of my family saying “next time please mention when booking that you have a pram”, I responded with the fact that I did as I do every single time I book somewhere to eat, she said that I hadn’t and there were no notes on the booking. I stood my ground as I knew I definitely had and she eventually backed down and said it could be a glitch in the system as it’s new. I have since checked my booking email confirmation and can confirm the note was added regarding the pram and requiring a high chair. It just started our visit off really poorly and we all felt a bit disheartened after that. :( I felt quite embarrassed being told off in front of my mum in law on her birthday like that. The host then had to rearrange the table for us so we could squeeze the pram and high chair in which we appreciated but if the notes were looked at and working properly, wouldn’t have been necessary. The service improved after that (however we weren’t meal checked) and the food was lovely. I usually always leave raving reviews after visiting restaurants but just felt so embarrassed immediately upon entering which was a shame.

A lovely village and very pretty pub. Inside it was dark and cold. The fires were not working - on gas or electric where we were sitting and I gather there were no logs in the other room. The waitress did her best to keep shutting the doorway close to our table. The food was all right - would have preferred my beef to be rarer,it was mostly brown. Covered in thick gravy with an enormous dry Yorkshire pudding. The pork was all right - not enough gravy and Yorkshire pudding a bit odd with pork.

We went there for lunch because they allowed our dog in the bar area. Menu was very pubby and nothing special but the specials were an interesting read. Starters (chicken wings and prawn cocktail) were very ordinary so 4/10 but the specials main courses were very disappointing. Cottage pie at £21+ was 2/3 mash and very little meat, the scampi was dry, thick coating/small meat and the chips were tasteless so 3/10. Will not return. Bar seemed disorganised.

Myself, wife and mother-in-law visited for Sunday lunch. Very busy! Took a while (20mins) for our orders to be taken, but that was OK as we could see they were busy. Two roast dinners, two very disappointed diners! The veg consisted of one slice of carrot and a tablespoon of cabbage. Oh and a single healping of cauliflower cheese between two. But the potatoes stole the show with their impenetrable exterior. None were able to be eaten! I played it safe with a burger, at least so I thought. The driest burger I've ever had the misfortune to endure (and I've eaten a lot!). We did complain, twice in fact. The first response was "I'll pass it onto the chef" (no apology from the serving staff or chef). The second complaint was met with "I'm sorry to hear that (the meteor like potatoes)" and "was there no special sauce in the burger? There should have been". I stood for a moment expecting an apology and I was not disappointed "sorry luv" was the extent of the apology. Never, I repeat never will I go there or recommend to anyone else!

We normally go to this pub for an amazing roast at lunchtime but unfortunately couldn't go at that time last Sunday so booked for 6pm. Couldn't believe what a different experience this was, we all ordered a different roast and to be fair the meat and most of the veg was lovely but the roast potatoes and parsnips were the worst I have ever had anywhere. Normally the potatoes are crispy and soft in the middle, these we struggled to get a knife through and I couldn't at all as so hard and thought they would give me indigestion. The cauliflower cheese usually comes in a separate bowl and I always look forward to that this time it was a mushy mess on the plate. No one came over to check we were happy with the meal till the end when it was too late. There was a lady at next table who had ordered pasta and it had much too much chilli to eat but again there was no one to tell. It just seemed that the staff weren't interested I could see them chatting away at the bar and some laying tables. Our dirty plates were left for ages on table. I don't understand why it should be so different we pay same money lunchtime as evening but its obviously not cooked fresh in evening just warmed up food. So so disappointing has put us off going back again. At the end we got offered free desserts but we would have preferred to have had a nice roast.

We ate here last night, spur of the moment decision. It was easy to book online and when we arrived we were given a friendly welcome.. I've has a beer in the garden before (stunning views) but the inside was just as nice, cosy with lots of individual touches so although it's a fullers pub it has a very local pub feel to it. We had a range of food from the standard and specials menu and it was all delicious but social mention for the baked garlic mushroom which a taste sensation, as you can see from the photo I was half way through eating before I thought to take a pic! Great service, with really friendly staff. Loved it.

Since my last review, I'm delighted to report that the Red Lion continues to provide top notch food and excellent service. On my visit today, I had a pint of beautifully kept HSB (£5.00) accompanied by Stuffed Garlic Mushrooms served with tarragon aioli as starters (£6.95). For mains, I chose the Chicken Kiev, served with rosemary & thyme-roasted new potatoes and creamed leeks ((£16.95) together with a (admittedly large) glass of La Vuelta Malbec (£9.90! - cor!), which was lovely. The service was exemplary, in fact, I'm struggling to remember if I've ever had poor service at this pub. That's quite an accolade, actually. I continue to highly recommeded this pub.

Went there for wedding anniversary we were the only ones in restaurant early evening however clearly understaffed and food was average. It’s a nice pub let down by the shortage of staff and attention to detail.

Staff did their best but the wait was long and when it arrived it was cold and very poor. Been sitting around for awhile so was dried up. Staff did offer replacement but was past it by then. We had 4 tapas plates and it was only the kofta that was worth eating. Very disappointed

Tried to have lunch here today. It was lunchtime and with the relatively small choice of meals and snacks available, (breakfast stops at 11:30am) it would have been reasonable to assume that demand could be met. Wrong! With only three quarters of tables occupied, my first choice of meal was unavailable due to a lack of potatoes. So, having had to choose another dish, twenty minutes passed before being informed that an ingredient for that was missing. I found this unacceptable and left having been refunded for the inconvenience of having to put up with such shoddy service. I was not the only complainant and something needs doing to improve service in this establishment.

Booked a table online, taking a chance on a place to eat we had not eaten before. My wife and I were with another couple and had the following from the menu: Starters; 2x Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquette, Mustard Mayo. 1x Cajun Tiger Prawns, Asian Sauce, Mixed Leaves. 1x Nachos – Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa. Mains; 2x Slow Cooked Rack of Ribs, House Made Barbeque Sauce, Fries, Coleslaw (1x half & 1x full) 1x Quesadilla, Toasted Tortilla Wrap with Melted Cheddar, Onion and Peppers, with added Cajun Chicken 1x Cooked Venison Haunch Steak, Chive Mash, Seasonal Vegetables, Port Reduction, Berry Jus. The food was outstanding, all of our food pierced at the table hot and freshly cooked, flavour of all the dishes was fantastic. I had the venison dish and it was exquisite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, with table service and a good knowledge of the menu. We would all definitely return to this pub/restaurant. Food and drinks were reasonably priced.

We visited today and will definitely be returning, took advantage of the Priceiswight deal and had 2 courses for 2 people 25.00 pounds.... Was the best Sunday Roast dinner we've had in a long time, plates were warmed, food excellent and service was very good, plenty of parking and noticed they have quite a few offers on during the week at lunchtimes. Lovely location too for a countryside walk before or after.
