I don't know about the rooms but it's a lovely pub with very good ale and very friendly staff. It's obviously popular with Diners as it was beginning to fill at 6.45pm. The pub is literally in the middle of nowhere and it's popular so that probably tells you all you need to know. Highly recommended.

We have regularly visited the Hawkley Inn for many many years and thoroughly loved all of our many experiences there. We went for weekday lunch recently and pub was very quiet and the menu had changed and struggled to choose what to eat. I had a pasta dish which was bland and tasteless and another of us had a fish dish which looked badly presented and not inspiring at all. We then visited on Sunday for Sunday roast ( party of four ) and so very disappointed again. The roast beef was very tender but was served with huge amounts of fat - the presentation was dreadful therefore as the fat was not trimmed off and visually disgusting. The Yorkshire puddings also were far from previous standard. We did mention to one of the servers but didn’t seem interested . We are aware that the previous owner Simon stayed on after he had sold the business to stay on as chef so standards were initially maintained - although we wish the new owner well we are not the only ones ( as can be seen from other reviews ) to dislike the different menus and cooking styles - if something works - why change it ? Unfortunately we will not now be returning to the Hawkley unless things change back again - very disappointed

This used to be a very nice pub with a good atmosphere, food and service. I believe it has changed hands recently and sadly it’s good qualities seem to have greatly suffered. No warmth seemed to come from the staff, the food was uninspiring and the service was poor - eg 30 minutes to produce a sharing starter of bread and olives which only arrived after I had chased it up. The pub has a nice garden and quite spacious indoors accommodation so let’s hope they can cheer up and quicken up somewhat.

We have visited and dined at the Hawkley Inn for 7 years whenever we visit the area. It was always the most wonderful pub / restaurant owned by the chef Simon. His food was second to none, extremely well presented and flavourful. Always needed to book well in advance as the restaurant was so popular. On Thursday 27th June we booked a table, arrived and surprised to find the restaurant empty. The menu had completely changed to more ‘fast food’ dishes - burgers / pie and chips etc. None of Simon’s glorious steaks !! Food was mediocre, Jus that came with the pie tasted absolutely disgusting, only saving grace was the delicious ‘greens’ ordered as a side dish. The staff were lovely, explained that there was a changeover of ownership, quietly agreed that the menu was not up to Simon’s standards. What a real shame. A beautiful pub in a lovely location that had an absolutely superb menu but now turned into a a run of the mill pub that serves very ordinary tasteless and unappetising food. Such a disappointment.

Food was delicious but took over an hour to come, and then, whilst we were still eating dessert, the lady in charge of the dining room came and told us that the table was reserved and we needed to leave! I found this place a few years ago when I met an old friend for lunch. Since then I have been back regularly and I’ve NEVER been disappointed. Recently it was taken over (by Zoe) and has got even better. I was there yesterday for Sunday lunch which was quite honestly one of the nicest roasts I’ve ever had. Roast beef with all the trimmings and the most delicious gravy. My wife had the same. My daughter had a burger (for Sunday lunch????, OMG kids) and her boyfriend had Fish & Chips (Tom, Fridays please!) and everything was superbly cooked. The desserts were excellent too. I think the Chef is called Lewis - Well done Lewis, keep it up. I have no hesitation recommending this place. It’s superb. Ps Order the Cauliflower Cheese side, you won’t be disappointed

We had mixed views on The Hawkley Inn. It’s a lovely place, and in a perfect spot for setting out on a circular walk. However, there’s an older lady who works behind the bar (not the owner) who probably isn’t best suited to the service sector. It’s also worth keeping an eye on your pint when it’s poured as they try to drain every drop of the barrel!

We had booked The Hawley Inn as a mid way point for a dog walk and Sunday lunch. The pub very kindly returned my email with some suggested walking routes but sadly we didn't take any of these instead using the gorgeous cricket ground located in the village. The pub was nicely busy and the food was very good. We noticed out table had another booking on it less than 2 hours after our slot but this dint happen. Really worth a visit as the staff friendly and the menu had a great selection in additon to the normal Sunday roast offering.

The usual warm welcome at The Hawkley last Saturday. We, a family of four popped in for a drink after a walk before going home for lunch. Best reported by dialogue: Me: “hello”. Bar staff: “If you want food we’re fully booked”. I bought drinks: “is there somewhere to sit to have our drinks?”. “No, we’re full” (it was early, there were four people sitting down). “Can we sit at the bar?”. “If you like”. After 5 minutes I asked for a menu “we’re fully booked”. “No, you said that, I just wanted to read it, so I know what to expect when I book”. “Alright”. I read it and said “nice menu”. “We change it every day”. “All of it?”. “No”. I saw sandwiches on the menu: “if we order sandwiches, do we need a table or can we eat them at the bar?”. You guessed it: “we’re fully booked”. “That’s not what I asked “. “The bar, if the kitchen’s not busy”. And so on. Not a smile, or welcome, or a suggestion that we book, pre-order, or suggest that if we were prepared to wait, we might get a sandwich. It’s popular, but it must be the food.

The only downside which stopped me giving it a 5/5 was the unexpected obligatory service charge which is added to everything - we always give a tip unless service or food are bad but I prefer to give what I want rather than be told what to pay.

Had several take-aways during lockdown and drove past a few other pubs to get there...it was always worth it. Not been back since it reopened the restaurant but we will.

We had dinner at the Hawkley Inn at the end of a long walk in the South Downs National Park and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this great country pub. Despite the current, challenging circumstances, they have a refined menu and have reorganised the internal space for indoor dining in a safe and functional way without affecting the overall character of the place. Food was superb. We ordered beef bourguignon and sirloin steak with french fries - they were both delicious and perfectly cooked. Staff, in particular Mark and Abbey, were super friendly and very welcoming. They are also much involved with their local community. We will definitely visit this great place again.

Had the pleasure of lunch at the Hawkley yesterday (Sorry Boris ) with good friends and as always found the food and service to be delightfu.l I have always sung the praises of the Hawkley's Steak and Kidney pie and again loved every mouthfull.I do wonder if the "Armature" (sic) reviewer of recent times was perhaps angling for an unwarranted refund?. Good wishes to all at the Hawkley during these troubling times

We visited on Sunday 23 February for a birthday lunch for my wife; a party of 6 adults and three children all under five plus a dog meaning we eat in the bar area. We had a large table and, despite the size of our party and the fact that the whole place was full, excellent service with a smile throughout. The Sunday lunch - the beef - was excellent and unlike some venues, was tender, well cooked and plenty of it. The vegetables were clearly freshly cooked, steaming hot and again, generous portions were served. My party agreed that this is a gem of a place and worth its five stars on this review.

Breakfast ok, bacon awful and fatty and pouched eggs overdone. Server Kathy made up for it with great customer service.

Tried to have lunch here today. It was lunchtime and with the relatively small choice of meals and snacks available, (breakfast stops at 11:30am) it would have been reasonable to assume that demand could be met. Wrong! With only three quarters of tables occupied, my first choice of meal was unavailable due to a lack of potatoes. So, having had to choose another dish, twenty minutes passed before being informed that an ingredient for that was missing. I found this unacceptable and left having been refunded for the inconvenience of having to put up with such shoddy service. I was not the only complainant and something needs doing to improve service in this establishment.

Booked a table online, taking a chance on a place to eat we had not eaten before. My wife and I were with another couple and had the following from the menu: Starters; 2x Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquette, Mustard Mayo. 1x Cajun Tiger Prawns, Asian Sauce, Mixed Leaves. 1x Nachos – Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa. Mains; 2x Slow Cooked Rack of Ribs, House Made Barbeque Sauce, Fries, Coleslaw (1x half & 1x full) 1x Quesadilla, Toasted Tortilla Wrap with Melted Cheddar, Onion and Peppers, with added Cajun Chicken 1x Cooked Venison Haunch Steak, Chive Mash, Seasonal Vegetables, Port Reduction, Berry Jus. The food was outstanding, all of our food pierced at the table hot and freshly cooked, flavour of all the dishes was fantastic. I had the venison dish and it was exquisite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, with table service and a good knowledge of the menu. We would all definitely return to this pub/restaurant. Food and drinks were reasonably priced.

Staff did their best but the wait was long and when it arrived it was cold and very poor. Been sitting around for awhile so was dried up. Staff did offer replacement but was past it by then. We had 4 tapas plates and it was only the kofta that was worth eating. Very disappointed
