On Sun 9th Feb 2025 1pm my partner and I attended a pre-booked lunch at The Red Lion... We ordered the roast dinner... When it came we both commented on the temperature of the meals.. One side of the plate was warm the other cold only the middle was hot... My partner drew this to the attention of a waitress and asked if it could be microwaved(not a good solution) I elected not have mine done due to tales I've heard of kitchen staff interfering with complaining customers meals(no evidence at this pub).. On paying the bill.. Waitress asked if all OK.. I explained the above and she adjusted the bill to £15.50(should have been £30) and offered us our 25% voucher back... We declined stating we would not be back. Rated 2*... A meal should never leave a kitchen less than piping hot and should not then be microwaved... We deemed the 25% voucher referred to 25% of the meal being hot 🤷

I explained the above she was apologetic and reduced the bill to £15.50(should have been £30)...she also said you can keep the 25% voucher for another time... We declined this saying we would not be returning.. So a disappointing Sunday meal out.. A meal should never leave a kitchen less than piping hot unless it's a salad. Nice charecter decor though... 2* only.

Visited it for lunch having been there on numerous occasions and service has always been good but not this time , we waited 50 minutes for any food to appear and frankly wasn’t worth the wait,I had the steak pie which wen arrived was burnt to a crisp meat had been so hard you couldn’t even eat it Looks like it had been left in the oven way to long shame on the chef for letting that out of the kitchen I showed it to the waitress but she was uninterested she just said I will tell the chef I got no apology or ask if I would choose something else partner’s food was ok so I just paid for hers Still no apology though when paying

Had a lovely meal at Red Lion today for 4 people. There was a short wait for our food and only one waitress serving, but this wasn't a problem. The pub was lovely and warm with pleasant cheerful staff and good food. We will definitely be back.

I booked the Red Lion fora family birthday meal. We hadn’t been before and thought we would try it as it sounded good. Unfortunately, the service was one of the worst I’d ever experienced, and we eat out a lot. The place was pretty quiet. We arrived at 7pm and left at 19.30pm. Mainly as the service was so slow, which we could understand as it was so quiet. We had to get up and ask staff to take our order, clear our plates and take puffing order. Even though I had asked for someone to take our pudding order I saw the waitress was setting tables, which was not a priority and when I asked her yet again to take our order she said she won’t be long!! Not impressed. The waitresses themselves were so miserable it just topped the night off! The food itself was ok but nothing special. Won’t be going back.

Great place, Nicola the manager, took very good care of us. Definitely going back. Recommend the chicken, penne pasta.

For the third year I booked our Christmas meal at the Red Lion for 7 of us friends normally it’s been a great experience. Everything was fine with the main Xmas meal and dessert then the lovely lady who had Bern serving us came to say she was leaving at 9pm from then on everything went down hill we sat the rest of the night with our plates in front of us I eventually had to ask for the mince pies and coffee both were terrible the mince pies look like a child had made them the coffee was stewed and unless we had said I am sure the young girl who seemed to have no idea you should communicate with customers would not have cleared the main meal plates unless we had told her to. I then went to the bar for the bill as still no one been to the table to see if we wanted another drink I was ignored at the bar by the young girl so I just stayed can we have the bill the bill never came had to go back and finally complained to the manager in duty. Considering it was a Xmas meal the experience was bad and the staff only seemed interested in the large group of lads in the bar playing poker.

First class service and meals. One of the best fish and chips ever. First rate steak and ale pie. Brilliant spicy chicken burger! The service was really special and a big thank you to the girls.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch at The Red Lion today. Good food at a fair price and served admirably by Kirsty and Nichola? The Unicorn bitter was on top form and there was plenty of Guinness on tap! If I had a local like this I certainly wouldn't complain. Look forward to seeing you again soon.

Wonderful, cozy and friendly! Nicola was the perfect hostess! We brought our new pup here for her first pub visit and she was greeted warmly and felt at home right away. Food was terrific as well, especially the leek and onion soup! Highly recommended!

Came in for a family meal the other day. A new landlord is settling in and it's going well. There was little to no wait on food. All the staff took care of us. Will be visiting again soon.

Run out of the beer I wanted, which was unicorn, I asked if it was going to be changed I was told no the manageress would change in the morning, so I had Cumbria way and it's shocking

We went in for a family dinner after work and the food did not disappoint! The chicken was perfect and the mash potato with it was amazing! Everyone enjoyed their meals great value and portions were big!

Catering staff are very ABUSIVE. When arriving at.the bar you can wait 5-10 minutes before you see bar staff to be served. Do not ask the kitchen staff for anything as they will tell you to F OFF. Totally unacceptable. Also I was followed by Toby who thought I was a different David he was phoned by a female staff as we left the pub. Toby drove his car fast to catch us up before we were home and parked the car on the pavement to come and confront me he wanted a fight. Then I shouted the Dave he wanted, hahahaha he nearly had diarrhea when big Dave came round the corner. I am only 5'8" disabled with walking stick. Now all staff have rallied to make as many excuses as possible to crap their way out of it. Let us see what the papers say and thinking of getting BBC and ITV involved. So if you love to be told to f off, the Red Lion is the place to go Bon appetite

Eight o’clock on a Saturday night no cask beer and no food. Service none existent - really not worth the effort of a visit.

Had a lovely family meal today. The workers were very helpful and service was on point. The food served was pleasurable and would definitely come again. The manager should be pleased with how this pub is run.

Shambles from the moment we arrived. Nobody seemed to know what they were doing. We had to go to the bar to ask if there was any waiter service. We ordered starters only to be told 5 minutes later that they had no black pudding on a Saturday night? We ordered drinks that eventually came but with no ice. After an hour the first two mains came, no cutlery, condiments or servietttes were on the table at this point. The steak and ale pie was dry and had clearly been reheated. The peas were dry and shrivelled. The steak was small and dry, served with very little else! We were then told that there had been an error with our order as the waitress had mixed up our order with someone else’s and the other two meals would follow as soon as possible. Time to go. We went to the bar to pay for our drinks but obviously that was wrong too - tried to charge us for a Bailey’s and a Shiraz which we hadn’t had- clearly mixed up that order as well! The manager’s attitude was appalling , asking us which member of staff he should fire!! He asked us if we had booked- not sure what the relevance was there! All in all a real disappointment and we won’t be returning.

Pleasantly surprised after reading recent reviews. Food was very good and plentiful, staff helpful. Will visit again.

We were there for a family birthday party and l must say after our previous visits, it was very disappointing. Some of the dishes were not up to your usual standard and our meals at varying intervals. Must try harder!!!!

A great place to eat drink and relax. Our families new weekly restaurant since being under a new manager. Tony is great with me and my family, he is very welcoming and goes above and beyond for us all.

We decided to go for New Years Day lunch save cooking. We ordered our first drink but my son ordered a black coffee and after waiting 20 mins I had to ask for his black coffee so we could take our first sip and cheers each other. There were two members of staff on the bar and were running round like headless chickens. We went to the bar to order the food and were told there was some food but not all the food on the menu was available. We were given a list of food they couldn't provide which included steak, lamb, curry and goats cheese!! go buy some from the supermarket! We had to work our way around the menu but after an hour of waiting three of us had to leave due to work commitments. The poor girl on the till/bar was apologetic but no sign of the management or a reason for the delay or why they didn't have food to serve! We heard them tell people, who had booked a table, that they weren't serving food around 3pm and they had packets of crisps instead! Apparently they only had one Chef on New Year's Day!! did they not think to order in more food knowing how many tables were being booked to cover the orders or even get another Chef in!! it was just bad management the likes of Tony we didn't see or hear from! it was such a shame as we have eaten here previously and it has been lovely and we ate here on Christmas Eve and it made a lovely start to our Christmas but New Year's day was ridiculous. The three that left from our group ended up having Burger King for New Years Day dinner! I am not sure we would go again which is a shame for such a lovely pub. Think management need to look into this and sort it out as would be a shame to lose such a lovely country pub to lack of clients. Also point noted, on all reviews there isn't a response from management to anyone's comments which would be nice to hear from them.

We nearly didn’t eat when we saw the reviews. Glad we did, it was lovely. The two girls serving were very friendly. We ate the small portions of tofu ‘fish’ chips and peas, and halloumi ‘fish’ chips and peas. Arrived hot and couldn’t fault it. So glad we went after the walk, which was recommended on the website and will def go to eat there again. Nice atmosphere as it has cozy fire and nice music playing.

We ordered Chicken Caeser, without anchovies, and a small scampi. When it finally arrived, I mentioned that that the sampi portion was huge and the waitress apologised as they had given us a large but would only charge for a small. The caeser had tomatoes and cucumber and hardly any sauce I ate it as we could not get the attention of the waitress and no one came back to ask us if everything was ok. When we went to the bar to pay I mentioned that I could not understand when the extra salad came from. The liased with the kitchen and they said they added the extra as they did not put the anchovies on (anchovies should not have been on per the menu). The waitress then advised that she thought it was odd but did not query it. When we looked into the kitchen the staff were laughing. Not very professional. Have to say though the scampi was very good, not much cooking skills needed though for that.

Very disappointing meal today , not up to the usual standards we have to say . Pub quiet. However, food took a while to get to us and other diners . Ordered breaded mushrooms and roast dinner. Waitress came back to say there were no roasts left , it was only 5.30pm? Mushrooms arrived , not breaded but slices of mushroom on French stick bread with a bit of salad and no garlic dip. My alternative was cheese pie , no chips with salad and veg. Cheese pie arrived, dried up bits of rocket and two slices of cucumber 🥒, and the plate was overloaded with dried out garden peas. The pie was edible , left the salad and peas, when asked if we had enjoyed our meals, we were met with the response , sorry it was not up to standard? Ordered a desert of cherry pie and cream , the waiter came back to say there was none ! Overall, it was a very disappointing visit, we were not the only customers complaining about food and lack of menu choices . Feel a bit short changed to be fair, we will look at other options for eating out locally, value for money is a must in this economically challenging times.

Lovely meal and fantastic service as always, even though the place was very busy. I won't have steak pie anywhere else as it's the best around! Staff are very friendly and attentive and nothing is too much trouble.

Possibly the most miserable dining experience of my life. Booked a table for 6pm and still told there’d be an hour’s wait for food - ended up 75 minute wait. Numerous menu restrictions- including no steak and ale pie - by 6pm??? The day before Father’s Day. When food arrived which indicated they were served with ‘seasonal vegetables’ arrived with only peas - hundreds of dry, bullet-like peas. Portion size small. Chips dry and powdery - I NEVER leave chips, but chips were left. Halloumi with Caesar salad warm but not grilled etc etc etc oh, and they’d run out of any sort of alcohol free beer. Simply dreadful!!!!

When we arrived, despite having made a booking we were informed that we would have to wait an hour for our food, and an hour and 15 later it finally arrived. What was meant to be "seasonal vegetables" came out as dry peas, my regular halloumi and chips had 3 fairly undercooked battered sticks so I dread to think what the small is like. However, I thought the staff were very good and apologetic about the lack of pies available. I wouldn't eat here again but I do have to say besides the food the experience was enjoyable, the decoration is atmospheric and the staff are very caring.
